'George will attack it in a great way,' general manager John Lynch said last week. 'We're very hopeful to have him back. San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy converted an NFL-record 58% of his passes on third and fourth down into first downs in 2025.
Footballguys view: Purdy played well when healthy, completing 230 of 342 attempts for 2,569 yards, 22 touchdowns, and three INTs. He also ran the ball 47 times for 208 yards and three scores. Despite injuries to him and his supporting cast, Purdy's 19.9 points per game over nine games ranked sixth among all QBs. Purdy will likely be available as a tail-end QB1 in drafts this summer.
San Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones is expected to receive trade interest from multiple teams this offseason, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Footballguys view: Nonetheless, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the 49ers have no plans to trade Jones this offseason and fully intend to bring him back as Brock Purdy's backup. Jones is under contract for another year at a salary cap number of $3.07 million. Jones got ample opportunity to show off his skills in 2025. He threw for 13 touchdowns and six interceptions while averaging 268.9 passing yards in eight starts in place of an injured Purdy. The Niners went 5-3 and stayed in the playoff mix with Jones under center. That's the kind of insurance policy teams covet.

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey was named the 2025 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award. He led the 49ers in both rushing and receiving yardage in 2025, totaling over 2,000 scrimmage yards after playing just four games in 2024.
Footballguys view: Fantasy players that believed in McCaffrey's ability to return to his previous high level of play (and win this award) were rewarded with the most valuable player in fantasy football in 2025. He's likely to stay in the mid first round again in 2026, but it's doubtful that anyone who took McCaffrey there in 2025 would pass on him this summer.

San Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones is a player that the 49ers would prefer not to trade this offseason, according to sources.
Footballguys view: There are many rumblings about Jones being a player of interest for a team like the Vikings this offseason. The 49ers have Brock Purdy as their franchise quarterback, but Jones looked good when starting for an injured Purdy this last year. They're going to say they have no intention of trading him to inflate his already somewhat high price of acquisition. Stay tuned.

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey eclipsed 2,000 yards from scrimmage for the third time in his career in 2025, and in the seasons after his previous two 2,000-yard campaigns, he played in a combined seven games. 'You've got to be ready to play in the games as much as possible,' McCaffrey said. 'I'll do whatever it takes for this team.'
Footballguys view: There's always a concern about McCaffrey being able to stay healthy. He runs hard and plays with a fire that few can match. That style (and his large workload) leads to a lot of hits. We'll see what he can do next year with a sizable role, but Fantasy GMs who draft McCaffrey are already conditioned to be ready for him to miss time.

San Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones said he believes he has shown that he can be a starter in the NFL but is fine with remaining with the 49ers next season.
Footballguys view: Jones was definitely one of the 32 best quarterbacks in the league this season, and he was also a relevant quarterback in fantasy leagues. Minnesota is a logical landing spot for him, but it's unclear what the asking price will be for Jones in a trade, and if he would want a new contract upon getting dealt. One way or the other, he will start again in the NFL, which should be factored into his dynasty value, especially in superflex leagues.

San Francisco 49ers WR Jauan Jennings caught five of his nine touchdowns on third down during the 2025 regular season.
Footballguys view: Jennings is a free-agent-to-be, and his future with the Niners is unclear. Still, with 1,618 yards and 15 touchdowns on 122 receptions over the last two years, Jennings has been an essential piece of the team's offense. Will that translate into a big payday in San Francisco? A move to another team? We'll be watching that closely as the free-agent signing period draws near.

Former Falcons head coach Raheem Morris landed on his feet. The 49ers are hiring Morris to be their new defensive coordinator, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Sunday.
Footballguys view: Morris, who is coming off a two-year stint coaching Atlanta in which he went 16-18, will return to the NFC West, where he previously coordinated the rival Rams' defense. Morris and 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan are close friends from previous coaching stops with Tampa Bay (2004-2005), Washington (2012), and, most recently, with the Atlanta Falcons in 2015-2016. This will be Morris' third professional stint as a defensive coordinator, having done the job in Atlanta in 2020 and for Los Angeles from 2021 to 2023.
San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak has removed himself from consideration for NFL head coaching vacancies, sources said Saturday, Jan. 24. The Las Vegas Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers had requested to interview him for their openings.
Footballguys view: Kubiak wanted to stay with the 49ers. He'll continue as their OC under HC Kyle Shanahan. Even though he doesn't call plays, Kubiak is seen as a future head coach in the near future. His brother Klint Kubiak (Seahawks OC) is likely to land a head-coaching gig this offseason.
Free-agent TE Hayden Rucci (49ers) signed a Reserve/Future contract with the San Francisco 49ers Thursday, Jan. 22. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Link to storySan Francisco 49ers DT Alfred Collins (shoulder) may need surgery after suffering a dislocated shoulder during the Divisional Round playoff game.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk is unlikely to play again for the team again, according to comments made by general manager John Lynch on Wednesday, Jan. 21.'I think it's safe to say he's played his last snap with the 49ers,' Lynch told reporters.
Footballguys view: Nobody is surprised by this after the 49ers put Aiyuk on the reserve/left squad list. Future guarantees in his contract are voided, and we'll see how the 49ers choose to resolve this issue with the talented yet oft-injured receiver.

San Francisco 49ers WR Jauan Jennings is a free-agent-to-be, and he deferred to his agent when questioned about whether he would play under the projected franchise tag of $28 million for 2026.
Footballguys view: According to USA Today's Kyle Madson, the 49ers aren't sure to tag Jennings given the inflated one-year valuation, so he's likely to test the unrestricted free agent market for the first time in his career. With 1,618 yards and 15 touchdowns on 122 receptions over the last two years, it's understandable Jennings may want to look elsewhere to see if there's a sizable payday for him. However, ESPN's Nick Wagoner also noted Jennings "got a bit emotional" while discussing his time with the 49ers, so it's tough to rule out a return if the market isn't to his liking.

San Francisco 49ers LB Fred Warner (ankle) had healed up so well that he planned to suit up for the NFC Championship Game, had his team advanced past the NFC Divisional Round against the Seattle Seahawks.

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (Achilles) said be believes he will return to the lineup before November and hopes to be able play closer to the start of the 2026 regular season.
Footballguys view: Kittle's optimism comes after he had surgery performed last week in Los Angeles by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the team physician for the Rams and Dodgers. Kittle said ElAttrache termed it a "best-case scenario" because he suffered a "clean tear" near his soleus, higher on his Achilles tendon. Asked about his timeline, Kittle told reporters that he'd keep it a "surprise." However, he later said privately that he expected to be playing again well before November. We'll continue to monitor.

San Francisco 49ers LB Mykel Williams (knee) said he believes he will be ready to return to the field around training camp.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy (toe) said he will not need surgery on the toe injury he dealt with during the season.
Footballguys view: Purdy suffered a turf toe and AC joint sprain in his left shoulder in Week 1 that sidelined him for two games. He aggravated the toe injury in his Week 4 return and missed six more games. Purdy played well when healthy, completing 230 of 342 attempts for 2,569 yards, 22 touchdowns, and three INTs. He also ran the ball 47 times for 208 yards and three scores. Despite injuries to him and being shorthanded, Purdy's 19.9 points per game over nine games ranked sixth among all QBs.
San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy had four wins in seven games against playoff teams in 2025, posting a 79.6 passer rating with 18.9 points per game (PPG) on offense, while going 4-0 with a 123.9 passer rating and 38.0 PPG against non-playoff teams.
Footballguys view: It's not fair to put all of this on Purdy. Health was an issue throughout the 49ers' 2025 season. Purdy was one of many 49ers who missed time due to injury. Purdy, George Kittle, offensive tackle Trent Williams, and wide receivers Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings all got banged up during the year. Kittle, in particular, missed six regular-season contests and left San Francisco's wild-card win with a torn Achilles. The injury bug also bit the defense. The good news? The pieces are in place for a turnaround, and there's plenty of fantasy production possible with better health.
San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy completed 15 of his 27 passes for 140 yards and an interception and rushed five times for 37 yards and lost a fumble in a 41-6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the Divisional Round. RB Christian McCaffrey (stinger) dealt with a stinger but managed 11 carries for 35 yards and caught five passes for 39 yards, and RB Jordan James added six carries for 28 yards and caught a seven-yard pass. TE Jake Tonges (foot) caught five passes for a team-high 59 yards before exiting with a foot injury, and WR Jauan Jennings had two grabs for 23 yards. WR Ricky Pearsall and WR Kendrick Bourne were both targeted twice, but neither caught a pass, and WR Demarcus Robinson gained a yard on his only catch. LB Dee Winters tied for the team lead with nine tackles, including three tackles for loss, and LB Eric Kendricks also had nine stops. S Malik Mustapha chipped in eight tackles and a sack.
Footballguys view: The 49ers offense came in shorthanded due to injuries and then lost Jake Tonges during the game and also didn't have Christian McCaffrey for part of the game. It was just too much for them to overcome against a great and balanced team like Seattle. The 49ers overachieved when you consider what they lost to injury, but the team needs to figure out what they seem to have such bad injury luck.
