Carolina Panthers defensive pass-game coordinator Jonathan Cooley is receiving interest from the Cleveland Browns regarding their defensive coordinator vacancy, and the Browns have requested permission to interview him, according to a source.
Footballguys view: According to USA Today, the highly-regarded assistant coach has spent the last three seasons with Carolina. Cooley was hired by the Panthers in 2023 as their cornerbacks/secondary coach. He received a promotion to his current post ahead of the 2024 campaign. Before landing in Carolina, Cooley worked his first three NFL seasons for the Los Angeles Rams. He served as a defensive quality control coach, assistant secondary coach, and defensive backs coach there from 2020 to 2022.
New York Giants outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen was requested for an interview with the Cleveland Browns for their defensive coordinator post.
Footballguys view: Cleveland needs a new defensive coordinator because Jim Schwartz says he doesn't want to be back in Cleveland after he was passed over as head coach. Bullen could be a good candidate for the Browns' job, and he is also a candidate to be the Cardinals' defensive coordinator. And, according to Profootballtalk.com, if he doesn't get one of those jobs, he's likely to be back with the Giants.
Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett is the 2025 Defensive Player of the Year, and despite the walkout of defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, owner Jimmy Haslam and general manager Andrew Berry aren't worried about the mindset of the star defender. 'We kept Myles abreast (of) the process throughout,' Berry said. 'So obviously he knew the news before you all did. Myles is a great team player and I'm not really worried about that.'

Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz resigned Friday, Feb. 6.
Footballguys view: Schwartz was in consideration to be the team's head coach, but they didn't choose him and went with Todd Monken instead. Now, Schwartz is likely to sit out the 2026 season and be back next offseason as at least a candidate for open defensive coordinator positions.

Link to storyCleveland Browns head coach was asked if QB Shedeur Sanders would be QB1 for the team in 2026, and he said that it is to be determined. He added he 'absolutely' can earn the job, though.
Footballguys view: "I think like any position on the team, that's still to be determined," Monken said of Cleveland's QB situation. "Am I excited about Shedeur? Am I excited about all the quarterbacks in the room? Am I excited to coach this football team? Absolutely." Monken talked about what he likes in a quarterback, focusing heavily on intangibles and personality. Meanwhile, the Browns have been in search of consistent, steady, productive quarterback play effectively since the team re-entered the league in 1999. It remains to be seen if Monken can develop Sanders or any other quarterback into that kind of player.
Michigan State quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian and New York Jets tight ends coach Jeff Blasko are expected to join the coaching staff of Todd Monken with the Cleveland Browns, although the deals are not yet finalized.
Link to storyFormer Baltimore Ravens offensive analyst Ian Kolste is being hired by the Cleveland Browns, according to a league source.
Link to storyBaltimore Ravens run game coordinator Travis Switzer was hired by the Cleveland Browns as offensive coordinator Friday, Jan. 30.
Footballguys view: Switzer isn't a well-known name, but he has worked under new Cleveland head coach Todd Monken for the last three years and has spent his entire coaching career in Baltimore. The Ravens had him work with wide receivers for two years and tight ends for two years before making him the run game coordinator, so he has more experience with the passing game than his resume suggests. There's word today also that the Ravens hired Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle to perform the same job for them, with the additional duty of playcalling that he did not have under Ben Johnson in Chicago.
Baltimore Ravens offensive line coach George Warhop is being hired by the Cleveland Browns as their offensive line coach, according to sources.
Link to storyCleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz will not return to the team in 2026.
Footballguys view: With Todd Monken hired as the head coach, Schwartz wants out. He was being considered for the top job, and team did not decide to promote Schwartz to head coach. He's an incredible defensive mind, and there will be more than a few teams that are interested.
Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken was named the head coach of the Cleveland Browns Wednesday, Jan. 28.
Footballguys view: The Browns finally made a decision! Monken has run strong offenses with both the Buccaneers and Ravens. His offense previously with the Browns (2019) was not as good (of course). Now, he's back as the head coach and has an interesting decision with QBs Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders. Needless to say, the Browns have a ton of changes to make on offense to be a respectable team.
Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase wrapped up his second interview with the Browns for their head coaching vacancy.
Footballguys view: Scheelhaase had his first interview with the team on January 16 and the second meeting had to wait until after the Rams participated in the NFC Championship Game. Sunday's 31-27 loss to the Seahawks freed Scheelhaase up for an in-person interview, which the Browns announced on Monday evening, and the Browns could also hire him now that the Rams' season is over. If that happens, Scheelhaase would be passing on the opportunity to interview for the Bills' head coaching job. Word of their request to interview Scheelhaase came while he was meeting with the Browns on Monday. The Browns have already seen several candidates pull their names from consideration for the job and they'll have to continue the search process if they don't come to an agreement with Scheelhaase.
Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski withdrew his name from consideration from the Cleveland Browns head coaching search.
Footballguys view: Udinski is still pursuing the Buffalo Bills' job, a league source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday. Udinski, who interviewed with the Bills on Sunday, has also agreed to a new contract with the Jaguars that includes a raise for the 2026 season if he is not hired as the Bills' head coach. Meanwhile, the remaining Cleveland candidates are Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, Commanders run game coordinator Anthony Lynn, and former Ravens OC Todd Monken. We'll continue to monitor.
Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz would likely be retained should Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase land the head-coaching position with the organization.
Footballguys view: Schwartz is one of the best defensive coordinators out there. Any head coach for the Browns would be wise to keep a resource like him around. The Browns reportedly want a young head coach, and Scheelhaase is 35-years old and one of the fastest risers in the coaching world.
Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase remains a target for the Cleveland Browns for their head-coaching vacancy, and the organization plans to meet with him in-person early in the week after the NFC Championship Game, sources said Saturday, Jan. 24. He already conducted a virtual interview with the organization last week.
Footballguys view: After joining the Rams in 2024 as an offensive assistant, Scheelhaase was elevated to passing game coordinator while working closely with Sean McVay. The Browns reportedly want a younger head coach, and at 35-years old Scheelhaase is getting a ton of interest in this cycle.
Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski is meeting with the Cleveland Browns in an in-person interview Friday, Jan. 23.
Link to storyLos Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter informed the Cleveland Browns he was withdrawing his name from their head coaching search.
Footballguys view: Minter is likely the favorite to get the head coaching job for the Baltimore Ravens, and that's a much better landing spot. The Browns have now had Minter and Mike McDaniel (now the Chargers OC) withdraw their names from consideration.
Former St. Louis Rams and Chicago Bears head coach Mike Martz said he would take the Cleveland Browns' head coaching job in a heartbeat. 'I would take the Cleveland job in a heartbeat,' Martz said. 'You need to change the culture...Kevin (Stefanski) started that. And I think I could solve that QB problem. I could resolve that issue on offense, in my mind.'
Footballguys view: Martz retired from coaching way back in 2012, although he did coach in the AAF in 2019. He is known for his work with the "Greatest Show on Turf" back in the Kurt Warner days with the Rams, but Martz did not have the same success after that. At age 63, it's interesting that he would throw his hat in the ring. Martz's statement about solving the QB problem is something whoever is hired needs to be the primary objective.
Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken had a second interview with the Cleveland Browns for their head coaching vacancy on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Link to storyFormer Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel informed the Cleveland Brown he was withdrawing his name from their head coaching search.
Link to storyFormer Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel will have an in-person interview with the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday, according to a source. It will be his second interview with the team for its head-coaching vacancy.
Footballguys view: According to SI.com's Ty Kohler, the belief within the Browns organization is that McDaniel can lead an offense at a high level, and with an already strong defense, he could quickly turn the Browns around. There is already familiarity between McDaniel and the Browns organization, as he worked as a WRs coach in Cleveland during 2014, under OC Kyle Shanahan. McDaniel will have several other interviews this week, too. He will be meeting with the Las Vegas Raiders for their open head coaching position, then he'll meet with the LA Chargers to interview for the offensive coordinator position.
Cleveland Browns LB Carson Schwesinger's 156 total tackles ranked sixth in the NFL in 2025 and were 50 more than any other rookie.
