Link to storySouthern Methodist defensive coordinator Scott Symons is being hired by the Dallas Cowboys as their inside linebackers coach, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys WR George Pickens is expected to have the franchise tag placed on him, league sources said Saturday, Feb. 7. The projected cost of the one-year, fully guaranteed franchise tag is estimated to be around $28 million. The team can apply the franchise tag to Pickens anytime between Feb. 17 and March 3.
Footballguys view: It would have been much more surprising to hear that the Cowboys were going to leave any possibility of Pickens leaving after his breakthrough season. He's going to go in the second round of many drafts this season, but he was worth that last season. The best way to take advantage of this is target Dak Prescott, who should be in line for huge numbers if Pickens, CeeDee Lamb, and his offensive stay healthy.
Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent WR George Pickens is expected to receive the franchise tag this offseason, but a sign-and-trade is still a possible option for Pickens, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo.
Footballguys view: Given Pickens reputation, there might not be many teams willing to give him a huge guaranteed money number on a second contract since he did show some of the behavior and play that seemed to wear thin during his three-year stint with the Steelers. We still expect Pickens to be a Cowboys next season, but will be monitoring the grapevine for a possible team that would give draft compensation for the privilege of paying Pickens a number that represents generational wealth.
Dallas Cowboys WR George Pickens and owner Jerry Jones have been discussing a contract extension, according to Jones, and Jones said he is 'looking forward to getting things worked out' with Pickens.
Footballguys view: Of course Jones is going to say that....and then he's likely to play hardball with the star receiver. The Cowboys just do that with big-money deals (see Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, etc). We believe they'll use the franchise tag on Pickens. That gives the two sides until mid-July to work out a long-term deal.
Cleveland Browns assistant wide receivers coach Stephen Bravo-Brown is being hired by the Dallas Cowboys for an undisclosed role on their coaching staff, according to a source.
Link to storyGeorgia outside linebackers coach Chidera Uzo-Diribe has been hired for the same position with the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday, Feb. 3.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys impending free-agent WR George Pickens said he would like to return to the Cowboys next season but believes his value has gone up after his 2025 season.
Footballguys view: The Cowboys want to keep Pickens, and the team has the franchise tag available to use on the pending free agent, but the question is whether the sides can negotiate a long-term deal. The Cowboys traded with the Steelers for Pickens in the 2025 offseason. Dak Prescott is the best quarterback Pickens has played with, and it showed. His previous best season was 63 receptions for 1,140 yards and five touchdowns in 2023. We'll be following this situation closely as free agency draws nearer.

Dallas Cowboys RB Javonte Williams recorded 25 broken tackles during the 2025 regular season, which ranked second in the NFL in that category.
Footballguys view: Signed to a one-year deal after spending four years with the Denver Broncos, Williams had fewer than four yards per attempt the past two years in the league. But Williams excelled in the Cowboys' zone running scheme. He finished with 1,201 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground while averaging 4.8 yards per attempt en route to an RB9 finish in fantasy. Now, the Cowboys have to decide if they're going to bring him back as an unrestricted free agent or allow him to hit the open market.

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott was blitzed 163 times during the 2025 regular season, which ranked second in the NFL.
Footballguys view: Nonetheless, Prescott delivered one of the best seasons of his career. As ESPN.com noted, for the fourth time, he threw for more than 4,000 yards and had at least 30 touchdown passes. He completed at least 60% of his passes in each of the first 15 games. He became the franchise's all-time leader in passing yards (35,989), passing Tony Romo. He is tied for the NFL lead with six 300-yard passing games. He is tied for third in multi-touchdown passing games (10). He also finished the season as QB6 in fantasy points.

Green Bay Packers defensive pass game coordinator Derrick Ansley will have the same title with the Dallas Cowboys, according to a league source.
Link to storyArizona Cardinals cornerbacks coach Ryan A. Smith will join the Dallas Cowboys and fill the same position on their coaching staff.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys WR George Pickens, who is set to become a free agent, is expected to receive the franchise tag, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, but the belief is that Pickens will be seeking a 'long-term deal.' If the Cowboys don't sign him to a long-term contract, some believe Pickens will stay away from the team 'for a large portion of the offseason or even training camp.' Pickens can further apply pressure by refusing to sign the franchise tag.
Footballguys view: Pickens only broke 1,000-plus receiving yards once in his three seasons in Pittsburgh, totaling just 12 touchdowns through the air, so the Cowboys have to decide if he's a one-hit wonder or if playing next to Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb helped unlock Pickens' skill set. Although he did disappear at times, Sports Illustrated pointed out that in the three games Lamb missed due to injury, Pickens caught 19 passes for 359 yards and four touchdowns, showing his ability to carry an undermanned wide receiver room. If tagged, both sides would have until July 15 to reach a deal.
Dallas Cowboys RB Jaydon Blue said his lack of consistency in practice played a role in his sporadic playing time this season. 'I'm trusting my coaches, and just making sure I'm working because, at this level, talent isn't everything,' Blue said. 'I have to make sure I'm putting in work so that I can continue to have those opportunities.'

Link to storyDallas Cowboys CB DaRon Bland (foot) has successful surgery on his left foot in Indianapolis on Tuesday, Jan. 13, the team announced. It's his second straight year Bland has had a procedure done on his left foot. He suffered a fracture in his left foot in training camp leading up to the 2024 season.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys impending free-agent WR George Pickens is believed to be a likely candidate for the franchise tag this offseason, according to ESPN.com's Dan Graziano.
Footballguys view: Pickens (a second-round pick of the Steelers in 2022) is set to be an urestricted free agent in 2026. He had career-high numbers in catches (93), yardage (1,429), and receiving touchdowns (9). A tag would next Pickens a one-year deal around $28 million for 2026. If tagged, Pickens and the Cowboys would have until mid-July to get a long-term contract done.
Free-agent RB Israel Abanikanda and WR Traeshon Holden were assigned to Reserve/Future contracts by the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday, Jan. 6.

Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus was fired Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Footballguys view: The 55-year-old Eberflus held the role for just one year. But over those 17 games, the Cowboys defense gave up 511 points, the first time in 65 years of existence that the franchise had allowed 30 points per game over the course of a season. Under Eberflus, Dallas also gave up 377 yards per contest (3rd-worst in the league), permitted opponents to convert third downs at the highest clip in the NFL, and was ranked 29th out of 32 teams in red zone defense. The Cowboys will now have their fourth defensive coordinator in as many years.
Free-agent WR Parris Campbell (Cowboys) signed a Reserve/Future contract with the Dallas Cowboys Monday, Jan. 5. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Dallas Cowboys CB DaRon Bland (foot) is scheduled to undergo foot surgery next week but should be ready for the 2026 season.
Footballguys view: Bland does not expect the recovery to limit him in offseason workouts and OTAs. He suffered a left foot fracture during 2024's training camp, just after a breakout 2023 season that saw Bland set a new NFL record for most interceptions returned for touchdown in a single season. That sidelined him until Week 12 following surgery in 2024. The Cowboys then signed Bland to a four-year contract extension worth $92 million ($50 million guaranteed) in August, but the foot issues persisted. He missed the final three games this year and finished the season with one interception.

Dallas Cowboys LB Shemar James posted 13 tackles - three solo and one-half TFL - in a Week 18 loss to the New York Giants.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys WR Ryan Flournoy caught five of seven targets for 68 yards in a Week 18 loss to the New York Giants.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys TE Jake Ferguson caught one of two targets for five yards in a Week 18 loss to the New York Giants.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys WR George Pickens caught one of three targets for nine yards in a Week 18 loss to the New York Giants.
Footballguys view: Pickens will be one of the most discussed players this offseason as a free agent that will likely get the franchise tag or a new contract from the Cowboys. Pickens was mostly a difference maker in a positive way during his first season in Dallas, but not always. Negotiations between players and Jerry Jones have a way of going sideways, so we should be ready for anything.
Dallas Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb caught his only target for four yards in a Week 18 loss to the New York Giants.

Dallas Cowboys RB Phil Mafah carried five times for 18 yards with a touchdown in a Week 18 loss to the New York Giants.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys RB Jaydon Blue carried 16 times for 64 yards and his first career touchdown in a Week 18 loss to the New York Giants.
Footballguys view: Blue has apparently been in and out of the doghouse during his rookie season, but this performance to finish the season is the right note to end on with Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders both free agents after signing only one year deals. Blue is worth a spot at the end of your roster in dynasty leagues and will be a player to monitor throughout the offseason.
