49ers | PUP list an option for George Kittle Mon May 4, 03:56 PM
San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (Achilles) will be a candidate for the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list if he is not ready for the start of the 2026 season, in the opinion of NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco. The 49ers have not ruled out the possibility of Kittle being ready for Week 1.
Footballguys view: In fact, head coach Kyle Shanahan has suggested Week 1 is entirely possible. Still, as Maiocco noted, a return for the opener seems like an aggressive timeline for Kittle's return from a torn Achilles, and the 49ers could be cautious, as he enters his 10th NFL season. If Kittle begins the season on the physically unable to perform list, Jake Tonges, who's proven to be a capable contributor in the passing game, would be the starter until the veteran returns.

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (Achilles) is doing very good in his rehab from a torn Achilles tendon, general manager John Lynch said Sunday, March 29, ahead of the NFL owners meetings. 'He's doing very good with his Achilles,' Lynch said. 'We're hopeful for Week 1. Some management during camp. He's progressing at a good rate.'

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (Achilles) could reasonably return by Week 5 from his torn Achilles tendon, barring any setbacks. 'George will attack it in a great way,' general manager John Lynch said last week. 'We're very hopeful to have him back. I remember when I first started playing, you had an Achilles, and everybody's like, 'Oh man, that's tough. You're never the same.' That's not the case anymore.'

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (Achilles) said be believes he will return to the lineup before November and hopes to be able play closer to the start of the 2026 regular season.
Footballguys view: Kittle's optimism comes after he had surgery performed last week in Los Angeles by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the team physician for the Rams and Dodgers. Kittle said ElAttrache termed it a "best-case scenario" because he suffered a "clean tear" near his soleus, higher on his Achilles tendon. Asked about his timeline, Kittle told reporters that he'd keep it a "surprise." However, he later said privately that he expected to be playing again well before November. We'll continue to monitor.

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (Achilles) will have surgery for his torn right Achilles tendon on Wednesday, Jan. 14. He suffered the injury in the team's NFC Wild Card game victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Footballguys view: Kittle now is looking at a return during the 2026 season. It's unlikely the veteran tight end will be ready for Week 1. Instead, Kittle may have to miss a month or two to begin the 2026 season as he recovers from this major injury in his age-33 season.

San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy completed 18-of-31 passes for 262 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, while running nine times for 24 yards, in the NFC Wild Card game road win against the Philadelphia Eagles. RB Christian McCaffrey rushed 15 times for 48 yards, while posting six receptions for 66 yards and two touchdowns, including a 29-yard TD from WR Jauan Jennings. The latter had one reception for 45 yards on three targets and the scoring strike. WR Demarcus Robinson led the way with six receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown on seven targets, while FB Kyle Juszczyk absorbed all four targets for 49 yards, with TE Jake Tonges posted a 14-yard catch on three targets, stepping in for TE George Kittle (Achilles), who had one grab for six yards before leaving with a ruptured Achilles. LB Garret Wallow had 11 total stops with five solo tackles and a pass defensed, while LB Eric Kendricks, a former Eagle, had 10 total stops with seven solo tackles, two stops for loss and a pass break-up to seal the win.
Footballguys view: The 49ers offense was getting pushed around early, but Brock Purdy completed a few big plays and the defense make enough stops to keep the team hanging around. A trick play perfect Jauan Jennings throw to Christian McCaffrey for a touchdown gave the 49ers the lead in the second half, and then McCaffrey caught another score to regain the lead in the waning minutes. Losing George Kittle to an achilles tear is a big blow to the offense. The 49ers were only able to muster three points against the Seahawks back in Week 18 with the #1 seed on the line, and that's where they will go in the divisional round.

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (Achilles) has been ruled out for the remainder of the NFC Wild Card game against the Philadelphia Eagles after suffering a torn Achilles tendon on his first reception of the game in the second quarter.
Footballguys view: Kittle being ready for Week 1 next season is a stretch. Backup Jake Tonges was productive at times in place of Kittle earlier in the season. He is a restricted free agent, so the 49ers will have to pony up around $3.5M if they want to have the right to match any contract offered to Tonges, who went undrafted in 2022.

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (lower leg) suffered an apparent lower-leg injury on his first reception in the second quarter of the NFC Wild Card game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He immediately went down after his right leg was bent awkwardly, and he grabbed at the lower-leg area before being carted off.

Footballguys view: In his age-32 season, Kittle has managed a handful of injuries this year. Practicing in full and being removed from the injury report should give fantasy managers full confidence in starting him this week.

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (ankle) was limited during practice Thursday, Jan. 8.
Footballguys view: Kittle's a seasoned veteran, so we're not going to get too concerned that he's not a full participant on Thursday. He made it through Week 18 without any setback, and the team is limiting him to get their superstar tight end as close to full strength as possible. He should be out there against the Eagles on Sunday.

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (ankle) is expected to play in Week 18, according to general manager John Lynch.
Footballguys view: Jake Tonges filled in admirably last week with Kittle missing Week 17. It sounds like Kittle will be ready to go against the Seahawks in Week 18. If Kittle plays Saturday night, he's a TE1 for Fantasy GMs in Week 18 championship games.

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (ankle) will be a game-time decision for the Week 17 game against the Chicago Bears.
Footballguys view: With a Sunday night kickoff, fantasy managers without a formidable TE2 should pick up Jake Tonges, Colston Loveland, or Colby Parkinson as potential pivot options in case Kittle can't go. The 49ers are fighting for the NFC's top seed, so they'd like to have Kittle available. Fantasy managers with a strong TE2 playing earlier may prefer to take the guaranteed points rather than waiting until Sunday night.

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (ankle) did not practice on Wednesday, Dec. 24. Head coach Kyle Shanahan did not rule out the chance of Kittle playing in Week 17.
Footballguys view: San Francisco can get the No. 1 seed in the NFC bracket and a bye to open the playoffs with wins in their final two contests. That means Kittle may deal with the ankle injury, then get a week off during the Wild Card round. Jake Tonges will start if Kittle can't play against the Bears on Sunday night.

The 49ers have gotten some positive news on tight end George Kittle. Per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Kittle suffered a mid-to-low ankle sprain during Monday night's victory over the Colts.
Footballguys view: That means he should not be out long-term with the injury if he misses any time at all. Kittle told reporters postgame that he didn't believe he had suffered a high-ankle sprain in the second quarter. Kittle also felt like the play was a hip-drop tackle. Kittle finished the Week 16 win with seven catches for 115 yards with a touchdown. In 10 games this season, Kittle has caught 52 passes for 599 yards with seven TDs. We'll be watching for more in advance of Sunday night's game against the Bears.

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (ankle) limped off the field in the third quarter of the Week 16 game against the Indianapolis Colts due to an ankle injury. He was deemed questionable to return, but he did not.
Footballguys view: Before exiting, Kittle caught seven of eight targets for 115 yards and a touchdown. Since returning from an early-season injury, Kittle has been a key part of this Niners offense throughout the tumult that was the middle portion of the campaign. Now that San Francisco is closer to full strength than it has been at any other point in 2025, he's poised to have more outings like the one he had Monday night. That said, we'll need to monitor the ankle heading into a Week 17 tilt with the Bears.

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle caught four passes for 67 yards against the Cleveland Browns in Week 13. He was targeted five times during the game.
Footballguys view: You'll take this on a windy day in Cleveland. Kittle had a catch inside the five and got enough targets to hold serve in fantasy. Ceiling games will be back in play for Kittle after his bye.

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle had six catches for a game-high 78 yards versus the Carolina Panthers in Week 12. Kittle was targeted 10 times.

TE George Kittle grabbed six receptions for 67 yards and two touchdowns on six targets in Sunday's win over the Arizona Cardinals.
Footballguys view: It was Week 1 since we last saw Brock Purdy and Kittle on the field together, and Kyle Shanahan wasted no time in getting San Francisco's passing offense rolling through the quarterback-tight end connection. The two touchdown catches gave Kittle 50 for his career and put him in rarified air in 49ers history. Kittle is now one of three 49ers in history with 500 career catches and 50 career touchdown catches, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens. Kittle and the Niners face the Panthers in Week 12.

George Kittle caught nine passes for 84 yards and scored on a 13-yard pass in Sunday's 42-26 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
Footballguys view: QB Mac Jones was 9-for-9 targeting Kittle, who had just eight receptions for 68 yards and a touchdown in three games since his return from injured reserve. The last time he caught nine balls was against Cincinnati in 2023, and the last time he had more than nine was also against Cincinnati in 2021 -- 13 receptions for 151 yards. It's a welcome outcome for fantasy investors, who will hope for more of the same when the Niners take on the Cardinals in Week 11.

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle caught four passes for 32 yards against the New York Giants in Week 9. He was targeted four times during the game.
Footballguys view: Kittle has done more for the 49ers offense with his blocking, helping revive the running game, then he has done in the conservative passing game now that the 49ers have morphed into a ball control offense. He's still a TE1 heading into a matchup with the Rams, but the spike games may be rare in the second half of the season.
