Rams | Matthew Stafford practicing again on Tuesday Tue Aug 19, 01:20 PM
Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford (back) practiced again Tuesday, Aug. 19. He hit the field for the first time on Monday after being sidelined for nearly a month with a back injury.
Footballguys view: Being on the field Tuesday indicates Stafford didn't have any sort of setback or aggravation after Monday's practice. Sean McVay said he wanted to see how Stafford's back would respond following his first practice, and it seems to have gone well. Not only did Stafford go through individual drills with the other quarterbacks, USA Today's Cameron DaSilva notes the QB was participating in the team portion of practice, too. The Rams are still being cautious, but as long as Stafford continues to progress, DaSilva contends the QB should reasonably be ready for Week 1. |

Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love (thumb) likely will be a very limited participant during the joint practice with the Seattle Seahawks Thursday, Aug. 21, according to head coach Matt LaFleur.
Footballguys view: Love returned to practice on Monday after undergoing a procedure to repair a ligament in his left thumb last week. He was able to participate in limited aspects of the day's session, including 7-on-7 drills. With LaFleur planning to limit him in joint practices, backup Malik Willis will handle the bulk of the snaps there, and he's also "more than likely" to play significant snaps in the preseason game, some of which will be with the starters. Love is expected to be ready when the Packers host the Lions to open the regular season on Sept. 7. |

New York Giants RB Cam Skattebo (hamstring) returned to practice Tuesday, Aug. 19.
Footballguys view: Skattebo, the fourth-round rookie, has missed much of training camp as well as the first two preseason games because of his hamstring injury. Head coach Brian Daboll indicated Skattebo's participation in his first day back to practice could be limited. Still, it was encouraging news for a player expected to receive a healthy dose of touches this season. His return, even as a limited participant, could indicate Skattebo has a chance to be ready Week 1. He has been listed as third on the Giants' depth chart at running back behind Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary. |
New York Giants WR Malik Nabers (back) is practicing Tuesday, Aug. 19.
Footballguys view: Nabers, who has also dealt with a lingering toe issue, said earlier this month that his limited on-field work was part of a plan the Giants had to make sure he is ready to go against the Commanders in Week 1. We spoke with Chris Bisignano of GiantInsider.com Monday night, and he confirmed all that. Bisignano added there's no concern among team officials about the back, although the ongoing toe issue is something that will have to be managed. Still, there doesn't appear to be anything here to keep fantasy managers from investing first-round draft capital to secure his services. |
Head coach Todd Bowles said at a press conference that Jalen McMillan has a severe neck strain and that he will not be ready to play for the team's Week 1 game against the Falcons.
Footballguys view: Bowles did not say how much more time McMillan will miss, but Tampa Bay Times staffer Rick Stroud reports the wideout will be placed on injured reserve. If so, McMillan will have to miss four games (but it could reportedly be more). McMillan was a third-round pick last year, and he had 37 catches for 461 yards and eight touchdowns as a rookie. Remember, the Buccaneers have not activated Chris Godwin from the PUP list yet. With McMillan out and Godwin questionable at best, first-round pick Emeka Egbuka will have a sizable, immediate role alongside Mike Evans. |

With Daniel Jones named the starter in Indianapolis, Anthony Richardson is left with an uncertain future. The Colts have publicly said he did not need to win the quarterback battle to have a future in Indianapolis, but it's unclear where he goes from here.
Footballguys view: Could Richardson move back into the lineup quickly? Steichen is not planning for this to be a short-term arrangement for Jones. "He's the starting QB for the season," Steichen said in announcing the former Giant as his starter. "I don't want to have a short leash on that." The Colts will be required to make a decision on Richardson's fifth-year team option for the 2027 season. We'll be watching this one closely. |

Indianapolis Colts QB Daniel Jones was named the starting quarterback by head coach Shane Steichen Tuesday, Aug. 19.
Footballguys view: Jones emerges from a preseason competition with Richardson to take command of the Colts' offense with less than three weeks left until the season opener against the Dolphins. Jones and Richardson had previously split reps with the Colts' first-team offense in practice and two preseason games; Jones will now proceed forward in practice with the Colts' starters. Steichen has said since the spring that a major determining factor in the Colts' quarterback competition is consistency. Richardson has been anything but that in his previous two seasons. We'll see if Jones can get enough done to hold the job. |

Green Bay Packers WR Dontayvion Wicks (calf) will miss practice this week, but there's still hope he'll be ready for Week 1.

Washington Commanders WR Terry McLaurin is unlikely to receive the deal he's seeking at the number he wants, in the opinion of rival decision-makers.
Footballguys view: Per The Athletic's Dianna Russini, a deal in the range of $27-28 million per season is reasonable. But even before McLaurin requested a trade due to a stalemate in talks, there was a belief that he wanted at least $33 million per season. There's no indication the Commanders are actively shopping McLaurin in a trade. He was activated off the physically unable to perform list by the club on Saturday while dealing with an ankle injury. The Commanders will return to practice on Wednesday. It's unclear if McLaurin will be on the field with his teammates. We'll continue to monitor. |

Washington Commanders CB Trey Amos (hamstring) did not play against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday, Aug. 18, due to tightness in his hamstring.
Link to storyCincinnati Bengals WR Charlie Jones had four receptions for 32 yards, which included a four-yard touchdown pass from QB Joe Burrow, against the Washington Commanders on Monday, Aug. 18. Jones is fighting for one of the jobs behind WRs Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Andrei Iosivas.
Link to storyCincinnati Bengals RB Tahj Brooks carried the ball 11 times for 47 yards against the Washington Commanders on Monday, Aug. 18. He also caught three passes (on four targets) for nine yards.
Link to storyCincinnati Bengals WR Mitchell Tinsley had five receptions (on six targets) for 73 yards and a pair of touchdown during the club's preseason loss to the Washington Commanders on Monday, Aug. 18. While the top three spots at receiver are all but set in stone, Tinsley, who drew praise from QB Joe Burrow earlier in camp, continues to push for a spot on the 53-man roster.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Hollywood Brown (ankle, foot) returned to practice Sunday, Aug. 17, and also participated in practice Monday, Aug. 18.
Footballguys view: The Chiefs plan to play their starters in their final preseason game, but head coach Andy Reid said that there's been no decision about whether Brown could be among them. "We'll see how he progresses through this thing," Reid said. "He's taking it slow, and we don't want any setbacks." Brown was limited to five games last season, so it's easy to understand why the Chiefs want to avoid further absences. Given the uncertainty about how long Rashee Rice will be available, it's all the more important for Brown to be on the field this fall. |

Detroit Lions WR Isaac TeSlaa will be receiving more work with QB Jared Goff and the first-team offense moving forward after performing well with the second-team offense, according to head coach Dan Campbell.
Footballguys view: While it was assumed Tim Patrick would start the season as the team's No. 3 wide receiver, TeSlaa's rapid ascension is threatening the veteran. Also, according to The Sporting News, Patrick has struggled mightily this offseason and is also injured. "He certainly has a chance to have a role in our offense and has done a great job getting better every day," QB Jared Goff said. Still, as impressive as he's been, TeSlaa has "barely" gotten run with the starters in practice, according to Jeremy Reisman of Pride of Detroit. Seems like that will change. |
The Commanders reportedly are shopping running back Brian Robinson Jr.. The report gained significant credence when Robinson didn't play in Monday night's preseason game against the Bengals. After the game, Commanders coach Dan Quinn said that both he and G.M. Adam Peters spoke to Robinson on Sunday afternoon, and there are "a lot of moving parts" to the situation. Regardless of where the moving parts will go, the signs are pointing toward the Commander's moving on. "News like that's always not easy," Quinn said regarding the conversation with Robinson.
Footballguys view: As a rookie, Robinson returned from being shot in the leg during a carjacking attempt in August to rush for 797 yards in 12 games. In 2023, he gained 733 yards in 15 games, along with 368 receiving yards. Last year, he ran for a career-high 799 yards in 14 games. He added 159 receiving yards. In the final year of his rookie contract, Robinson has a base salary of $3.4 million. Meanwhile, rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt appears to be in line for a significant role going forward, although Chris Rodriguez Jr. and Austin Ekeler are also in the mix. |

Link to storyRams quarterback Matthew Stafford practiced for the first time during training camp on Monday, with the team noting that he was a full participant in an hour-long practice. Head coach Sean McVay told reporters that Stafford looked good practicing, but added that he doesn't have any further updates. "It was good to be able to have Matthew out there. He did a good job today," McVay said. "I think there was a lot of intended information, but there are no updates. We're going to keep it a day, and really, a week at a time."
Footballguys view: McVay did not share what the rest of the week would be like when it comes to Stafford's practice schedule. McVay also would not go into a level of confidence for Stafford being ready for the opener. "I think that would be putting the cart way before the horse," McVay said, via Gary Klein of the L.A. Times. "I thought he did a good job today." Stafford, 37, had not practiced in training camp until Monday as he's been dealing with a disc issue in his back. We'll continue to follow up as developments warrant. |
