San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy (shoulder) underwent an MRI on his shoulder that the team feels good about. His status for Week 12 is unknown, but QB Brandon Allen would start if he can't go, according to general manager John Lynch.
Footballguys view: Purdy is far from a sure thing to play on Sunday, and that could affect the value of everyone in the 49ers offense, not to mention the Packers D/ST and the offensive outlook for a Packers offense that only threw 17 times last week in the win over Chicago. It doesn't sound like Purdy's shoulder issue is a long term problem, but we should be wary of playing him until we learn more about the injury. |

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the team's preseason finale versus the Las Vegas Raiders Friday, Aug. 23, that the backup quarterback competition between QBs Brandon Allen and Joshua Dobbs was still too close to call.
Footballguys view: We'll know soon enough as both are decent options for the 49ers behind Brock Purdy. Last year, Dobbs had some good play (and some ball security issues too) with the Vikings and Cardinals. We'll see if Dobbs' experience gets him the nod over Allen in this battle. Almost half the league kept three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, so that could be an option for the 49ers as well. Now, they just need to determine who is no.2 and who is no.3 on the depth chart. |

Free-agent QB Brandon Allen (Bengals) signed an undisclosed deal with the San Francisco 49ers Wednesday, May 3.
Footballguys view: The 49ers have a jam-packed quarterback room. Brock Purdy is the starter when healthy, most likely, but he's going to miss perhaps a large part of the 2023 season if not the season entirely. Trey Lance is still there as a developmental prospect with upside. Sam Darnold is there, and he's a favorite of the coaching staff who could win the starting job if/when Purdy is out. Allen will be behind those three, and he's most likely just a camp arm. |

Cincinnati Bengals QB Brandon Allen went 15-for-29 for 136 yards and one touchdown against the Cleveland Browns in Week 18. RB Trayveon Williams rushed for 38 yards on nine carries, while RB Chris Evans rushed for 35 yards on seven carries and caught four passes for 24 yards and one touchdown. WR Trent Taylor caught two passes for 41 yards on three targets. WR Ja'Marr Chase caught two passes for 26 yards on four targets, while TE Mitchell Wilcox caught three passes for 16 yards on five targets.
Footballguys view: The Bengals will host a playoff game next week as division champs and should feel like they can play with anyone after beating the Chiefs last week. This was a huge success for the team no matter what happens next week, but the first playoff win in 31 years would be sweet. |

Cincinnati Bengals QB Brandon Allen went 29-for-37 for 371 yards and two touchdowns against the Houston Texans in Week 16.
Footballguys view: Allen didn't all of the sudden become a quality NFL quarterback, this is just how poor the Texans defense is playing lately. The Titans offense should be massive next week against Houston, while Allen has made more of a case for himself to be a backup quarterback next year but will run into the Ravens next week. |
