Bills | Matt Prater might practice more this week Tue Jan 13, 12:40 AM
Buffalo Bills PK Matt Prater (quadriceps) 'is in a good spot', head coach Sean McDermott said Monday, Jan. 12, as he recovers from a quadriceps injury. Prater is expected to practice somewhat similar to last week, though he might increase reps a little more this week.
Footballguys view: Prater was limited to field goals and extra point attempts in the AFC Wild Card game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Punter Mitch Wishnowsky handled kickoffs. We'll be watching for more.

Buffalo Bills TE Dalton Kincaid (undisclosed) was wearing a walking boot after the Wild Card playoff game, but head coach Sean McDermott said Kincaid should be fine for the Divisional Round game.
Footballguys view: Great news considering the potential outcomes. The tight end has missed five regular-season contests in total due to various injuries, including to his oblique and hamstring. Still, Kincaid has remained as one of the Bills' top targets in the passing game, finishing the regular season second on the team in yards receiving (571) and first in touchdowns receiving with five. During Buffalo's win over the Jaguars in the Wild Card Round, he recorded three receptions for 28 yards and a touchdown. We'll see if he's ready with a short turnaround to a Saturday game in Denver.

Buffalo Bills WR Tyrell Shavers (knee) is being evaluated after injuring his knee during the Wild Card playoff game, according to head coach Sean McDermott.
Footballguys view: Shavers got hurt while returning a punt in the second quarter. He stayed down on the field after the play and was clearly in pain, but he was able to return to action. The 26-year-old wide receiver has appeared in every game for the Bills since the start of the regular season. We'll see if he can keep that streak going on a short week, with the Bills playing in Denver on Saturday.
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers said he was 'not going to make any emotional decisions' regarding his potential retirement in comments made after the team's Wild Card loss to the Houston Texans.
Link to storyAaron Rodgers player page
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers connected on 17 of his 33 passing attempts for 146 yards, zero touchdowns, and an interception in a loss to the Houston Texans on Wild Card Weekend. Rodgers was sacked four times and fumbled twice, losing one. RB Jaylen Warren had 12 carries for 43 yards; he added a four-yard reception. RB Kenneth Gainwell picked up 20 yards on six carries, and he also caught four passes for 26 yards. WR DK Metcalf had two receptions for 42 yards; he was targeted five times. WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling logged 26 yards on three receptions. WR Adam Thielen posted two receptions for 25 yards. WR Calvin Austin was held to three catches and eight yards. TE Pat Freiermuth had an 18-yard reception for his lone catch, while TE Jonnu Smith turned two receptions into minus-one yard. LB Patrick Queen led the club with 10 tackles, including seven solo. CB Brandin Echols was credited with three stops and had an interception in the loss.
Footballguys view: Unlike a heart-stopping fourth-quarter rally against Baltimore that earned them their first AFC North title since 2020, this time there was no late-game magic from Rodgers and the Steelers. Instead, Mike Tomlin's postseason losing streak hit seven, tying Marvin Lewis of the Bengals for the longest playoff skid by an NFL coach. While the NFL's longest-tenured coach is all but assured of returning for a 20th season if he wants, Pittsburgh heads into yet another offseason likely searching for another quarterback and answers to a playoff drought whose weight seems to grow by the year.

Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud completed 21 of 32 passes for 250 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in a 30-6 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wild Card Weekend. Stroud also fumbled five times, losing two. RB Woody Marks ran the ball 19 times for 112 yards and a touchdown. RB Nick Chubb had 10 carries for 48 yards. WR Christian Kirk tallied eight receptions (on nine targets) for 144 yards and a score. WR Jayden Higgins finished with three catches for 39 yards, and WR Xavier Hutchinson managed 21 yards on two grabs. WR Jaylin Noel was targeted once but did not have a catch. TE Dalton Schultz caught three of four targeted passes for 12 yards. S Jalen Pitre had a team-high seven tackles (five solo), including two tackles for loss. DT Sheldon Rankins had 1 1/2 sacks and a fumble recovery that he returned for a score. S Calen Bullock had three solo tackles and an interception that was taken back for a touchdown.
Footballguys view: The Texans will take on the Patriots in a Divisional Playoff game Sunday afternoon. Houston heads to New England as the hottest team in the NFL with a quarterback who will be eager for a chance at a reprieve and a defense that can keep a game close against any opponent. The injury status of Nico Collins, who suffered a concussion in Pittsburgh, will merit our attention.

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans WR Nico Collins (concussion) has been downgraded from questionable to out for the remainder of the AFC Wild Card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers due to concussion. He finished the game with three receptions for 21 yards on five targets.
Footballguys view: With a trip to Foxboro to take on the Patriots this Sunday, Collins will need to clear the protocol to be available.

Houston Texans WR Justin Watson (concussion) suffered a concussion in the AFC Wild Card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he will not return.
Footballguys view: Watson will have to clear the NFL's five-step protocol to be cleared for Sunday's Divisional Playoff game against the Patriots.

Houston Texans WR Nico Collins (concussion) left the AFC Wild Card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second half due to a concussion.
Footballguys view: Collins needed to be redirected by the training staff to the sidelines, as he was confused, per the telecast. The wideout was taken to the blue medical tent before being carted off. The Texans subsequently ruled him out.

Link to storyNew England Patriots RB D'Ernest Johnson was released Monday, Jan. 12.
Footballguys view: Johnson joined New England's practice squad midseason and was signed to the 53-man roster in mid-December. He appeared in seven regular-season games for the club. But he played just two special teams snaps in the playoff victory over the Chargers on Sunday night.

Los Angeles Rams TE Terrance Ferguson (hamstring) has a good chance to be available for the Divisional Round playoff game, according to head coach Sean McVay.
Footballguys view: Ferguson missed the last two games with a hamstring injury that popped up on Friday before the finale against the Arizona Cardinals, but he's making progress, too. Ferguson's return would give the Rams even more talent and depth at an already rich position, with Tyler Higbee back and Colby Parkinson playing well.
Green Bay Packers TE Tucker Kraft (knee) said he is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Footballguys view: The Packers usually require nine months of recovery for players coming off ACL repairs. Kraft will be at 10 months come Week 1 and, as he said, "hopefully bulletproofed by then." At the time of his injury, in the eighth game of the season, Kraft was second on the Packers in receptions with 32, and his 15.3 yards per catch was uncommonly high for a tight end. He led the team in touchdown receptions with six and was TE2 for fantasy purposes through Week 8. We'll be watching his progress closely.

Buffalo Bills WR Gabe Davis (knee) will have an MRI Monday, Jan. 12. His knee was so swollen that an initial diagnosis was difficult.
Footballguys view: We'll be watching for more on Davis after the MRI. But even if it's not a season-ending injury, it'd be nearly impossible to imagine the six-year pro making a return in time for the AFC Divisional Round, as the Bills are set to play the Broncos in just five days in Denver.

Updating previous reports, Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford (finger) suffered a sprained finger in the Wild Card Round but will be good to go for the Divisional Round, according to head coach Sean McVay.
Footballguys view: Stafford had a finger on his right throwing hand bent backward late in the first half of Saturday's win over the Panthers, but he was still able to finish the game. According to USA Today, Stafford's biggest hurdle heading into this divisional game is the Chicago weather, where early forecasts call for a high of 16 degrees and a low of two degrees. The wind chill will make it feel closer to -8 degrees. We'll monitor the finger throughout the week.

Atlanta Falcons TE Kyle Pitts won't get "top tight end money" from the Falcons in free agency, in the opinion of ESPN's Dan Graziano.
Footballguys view: Graziano further notes that WR Drake London is eligible for an extension, and Pitts hasn't been consistently healthy or consistently great since his rookie year. That said, Pitts finished with 88 receptions for 928 yards and five touchdowns. It was Pitts' best season since that inaugural campaign in 2021. We'll be watching this one closely.
Kyle Pitts Sr. player page
Green Bay Packers WR Romeo Doubs could depart via free agency in the offseason, in the opinion of ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, who "wouldn't be surprised" to see Doubs with a new team in 2026.
Footballguys view: The Packers discussed Doubs in trade talks with other teams last offseason and have yet to extend him. They've used extremely high draft picks on receivers in recent years, including Matthew Golden. Doubs has been a reliable target for Jordan Love, but it doesn't sound like the Packers will engage in a bidding war.
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Travis Etienne "looks as if he's not in the Jags' future plans," in the opinion of ESPN's Dan Graziano.
Footballguys view: As Graziano notes, the team did not re-sign Etienne ahead of his impending free agency this offseason, and RBs Bhayshul Tuten and LeQuint Allen were both drafted by new GM James Gladstone. Graziano does add, however, that the team could potentially try to bring back Etienne on a short-term deal. Expect other teams to have interest.
Travis Etienne Jr. player page
Philadelphia Eagles TE Dallas Goedert is set to become a free agent this offseason, and he'll only be back with the Eagles if he's willing to sign a 'team-friendly' deal, in the opinion of ESPN's Dan Graziano.
Footballguys view: It looked like Goedert wasn't going to return for the 2025 season, but then the two sides finally reached an agreement on a one-year deal to bring him back for his 8th NFL season. The 31-year-old in 2025 played in 15 games and caught 60 passes for 591 yards and a career-high 11 touchdown catches. He had two more touchdowns in the playoff game, but cost will be a determining factor in a potential return.

New England Patriots QB Drake Maye completed 17 of his 29 passes for 268 yards, a touchdown and an interception, and he rushed seven times for a team-high 69 yards in a 16-3 win over the Los Angeles Chargers in the Wild Card game. Maye also lost a fumble. RB Rhamondre Stevenson finished with 10 carries for 53 yards and caught three passes for a team-best 75 yards, and RB TreVeyon Henderson gained just 11 yards on seven carries while catching one pass for nine yards. WR Kayshon Boutte hauled in four passes for 66 yards, and TE Hunter Henry turned three catches into 64 yards and a score. WR Stefon Diggs was limited to 16 yards on two receptions, and Efton Chism III caught a 20-yard pass and failed to complete his only pass attempt. WR Kyle Williams ended up with one catch for seven yards, and WR Demario Douglas gained three yards on his only catch. S Craig Woodson's 11 tackles led the team, and his seven solo stops were also a high mark for New England. The Patriots combined for six sacks and 11 quarterback hits, and DT Milton Williams and LB K'Lavon Chaisson both notched a pair of sacks.

Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert completed 19 of his 31 passes for 159 yards, rushed 10 times for 57 yard and was sacked six times and lost a fumble in a 16-3 loss to the New England Patriots in the Wild Card game. RB Omarion Hampton attempted to play through an ankle injury but lost a yard on his only carry, and RB Kimani Vidal rushed 11 times for 31 yards and caught two passes for 20 yards. WR Ladd McConkey had three grabs for a team-high 32 yards, and TE Oronde Gadsden II chipped in three catches for 20 yards. WR Keenan Allen finished with three catches for 25 yards on a team-high eight targets, and Quentin Johnston hauled in three passes for 20 yards. LB Daiyan Henley logged a game-high 13 tackles, including nine solo stops, and added an interception, and LB Odafe Oweh delivered four tackles and three sacks. Link to storyPhiladelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts completed 20-of-35 passes for 168 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in an NFC Wild Card game loss against the San Francisco 49ers, while running five times for 14 yards. RB Saquon Barkley rushed 26 times for a game-high 106 yards with three receptions for 25 yards on six targets. RB Tank Bigsby had four runs for 19 yards, with RB Will Shipley chipping in with a 6-yard grab on his lone touch and target. WR DeVonta Smith posted team bests with eight receptions and 70 yards on 11 targets, while new dad TE Dallas Goedert had four receptions for 33 yards and a TD, while also running for a 1-yard score. WR A.J. Brown had three receptions for 25 yards on seven targets, but he also had a key drop in the fourth quarter and a shouting match with head coach Nick Sirianni during the game. WR Darius Cooper had a 9-yard catch on his only target, while WR Jahan Dotson didn't have a catch on his lone target. DB Quinyon Mitchell had two interceptions and three passes defensed, while DE Jalen Carter had three total stops, a solo tackle, a sack, a tackle for loss and a QB hit.
Footballguys view: The Eagles offense has been a dysfunctional family all season, and it ended up being the downfall of the 2025 season for the team. AJ Brown had a terrible drop with the team driving to win the game, and was seen having a heated exchange with head coach Nick Sirianni on the sideline earlier in the game. That won't quiet speculation that he gets dealt in the offseason. The 49ers were without their starting linebackers, but the Eagles underachieved on offense all day. It could lead to both the firing of offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo and the hiring of 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh as a head coach in this firing/hiring cycle - but not for at least one more week. Dallas Goedert is also a free agent, so there could be some major changes for this offense in the offseason.

San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy completed 18-of-31 passes for 262 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, while running nine times for 24 yards, in the NFC Wild Card game road win against the Philadelphia Eagles. RB Christian McCaffrey rushed 15 times for 48 yards, while posting six receptions for 66 yards and two touchdowns, including a 29-yard TD from WR Jauan Jennings. The latter had one reception for 45 yards on three targets and the scoring strike. WR Demarcus Robinson led the way with six receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown on seven targets, while FB Kyle Juszczyk absorbed all four targets for 49 yards, with TE Jake Tonges posted a 14-yard catch on three targets, stepping in for TE George Kittle (Achilles), who had one grab for six yards before leaving with a ruptured Achilles. LB Garret Wallow had 11 total stops with five solo tackles and a pass defensed, while LB Eric Kendricks, a former Eagle, had 10 total stops with seven solo tackles, two stops for loss and a pass break-up to seal the win.
Footballguys view: The 49ers offense was getting pushed around early, but Brock Purdy completed a few big plays and the defense make enough stops to keep the team hanging around. A trick play perfect Jauan Jennings throw to Christian McCaffrey for a touchdown gave the 49ers the lead in the second half, and then McCaffrey caught another score to regain the lead in the waning minutes. Losing George Kittle to an achilles tear is a big blow to the offense. The 49ers were only able to muster three points against the Seahawks back in Week 18 with the #1 seed on the line, and that's where they will go in the divisional round.

Chicago Bears TE Colston Loveland racked up eight receptions, 137 yards and 15 targets in the NFC Wild Card game against the Green Bay Packers on Saturday, Jan. 10, setting new franchise highs in a postseason victory.
Footballguys view: Loveland already had a breakout game of sorts, although it was against the Bengals. This one was higher profile, and could push him into the top five at his position in fantasy drafts.
Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (Achilles) has been ruled out for the remainder of the NFC Wild Card game against the Philadelphia Eagles after suffering a torn Achilles tendon on his first reception of the game in the second quarter.
Footballguys view: Kittle being ready for Week 1 next season is a stretch. Backup Jake Tonges was productive at times in place of Kittle earlier in the season. He is a restricted free agent, so the 49ers will have to pony up around $3.5M if they want to have the right to match any contract offered to Tonges, who went undrafted in 2022.

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (lower leg) suffered an apparent lower-leg injury on his first reception in the second quarter of the NFC Wild Card game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson completed a virtual interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the same position on Sunday, Jan. 11.
Footballguys view: The Bucs are looking at more experienced offensive coordinators over up and coming stars. This is a make or break for Todd Bowles, so the team is looking for results now. Baker Mayfield was actually very good against Houston and Seattle before getting hurt against Detroit in Week 7, so whoever the team hires may be a success even if they aren't any better than the recently-fired Josh Grizzard.

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence completed 18-of-30 passes for 207 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, while running six times for 31 yards. RB Travis Etienne Jr. rushed 10 times for a game-high 67 yards, while RB Bhayshul Tuten ran four times for 51 yards. On the receiving end, WR Parker Washington hauled in seven receptions for a game-best 107 yards and a touchdown, while Etienne added five grabs for 49 yards and a score, and WR Brian Thomas Jr. had two catches for 21 yards and a TD. WR Jakobi Meyers was targeted four times, but managed just a single 12-yard catch, while TE Brenton Strange converted his five targets into just two grabs and nine yards. LB Devin Lloyd led the way with five solo tackles, an assist and a fumble recovery, while S Eric Murray had seven total stops and four solo tackles, and DE Josh Hines-Allen had four total stops, three solo tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss and two quarterback hits.
Footballguys view: It wasn't a flawless game by Lawrence, but it would have been good enough to beat most of the teams in the AFC playoff bracket, and he was productive against a good Bills pass defense. The Jaguars were stopped on fourth down inside the Bills 10 after recovering a Ray Davis fumbled kickoff return and Cam Little missed a 54-yard field goal attempt at the half awarded on a controversial call. You can't expect to beat Josh Allen in the postseason when you miss multiple scoring opportunities. The future is still bright for this team and for Lawrence (who will get Travis Hunter back). The biggest decision this offseason will be whether to sign Travis Etienne, who is due to hit free agency in March.

Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen went 28-for-35 for 273 yards and one touchdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Wild Card playoff game and also rushed for 33 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries during the game. RB James Cook rushed for 46 yards on 15 carries and also caught two passes for five yards. WR Khalil Shakir caught 12 passes for 82 yards on 12 targets. WR Brandin Cooks caught three passes for 58 yards on five targets, while WR Keon Coleman caught one pass for 36 yards on one target. TE Dawson Knox caught three passes for 30 yards on three targets, while TE Dalton Kincaid caught three passes for 28 yards and one touchdown on five targets. LB Shaq Thompson recorded six solo tackles, eight total tackles and one interception during the game.
Footballguys view: Allen was his typical superhero self in the postseason despite two trips to the medical tent. His decision making was cold-blooded and he created many of the best plays for the Bills pass offense with creativity and toughness. The Jaguars defense didn't have many lapses, but Allen had the look of a quarterback who is not going to be stopped on potential game-winning drives. The Jaguars excellent run defense predictably bottled up Cook, but he could have a big game against Denver next week. Shakir was "what the defense gave" Allen on many dropbacks, and he converted a few first downs with grit and guile. The team lost Gabe Davis to an injury during the game, but that didn't stop Allen from carrying them to victory. This might have been the toughest opponent they will face on the AFC side of the bracket.
