49ers | Brock Purdy struggled against good teams Sun Jan 18, 01:44 PM
San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy had four wins in seven games against playoff teams in 2025, posting a 79.6 passer rating with 18.9 points per game (PPG) on offense, while going 4-0 with a 123.9 passer rating and 38.0 PPG against non-playoff teams.
Footballguys view: It's not fair to put all of this on Purdy. Health was an issue throughout the 49ers' 2025 season. Purdy was one of many 49ers who missed time due to injury. Purdy, George Kittle, offensive tackle Trent Williams, and wide receivers Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings all got banged up during the year. Kittle, in particular, missed six regular-season contests and left San Francisco's wild-card win with a torn Achilles. The injury bug also bit the defense. The good news? The pieces are in place for a turnaround, and there's plenty of fantasy production possible with better health.
San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy completed 15 of his 27 passes for 140 yards and an interception and rushed five times for 37 yards and lost a fumble in a 41-6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the Divisional Round. RB Christian McCaffrey (stinger) dealt with a stinger but managed 11 carries for 35 yards and caught five passes for 39 yards, and RB Jordan James added six carries for 28 yards and caught a seven-yard pass. TE Jake Tonges (foot) caught five passes for a team-high 59 yards before exiting with a foot injury, and WR Jauan Jennings had two grabs for 23 yards. WR Ricky Pearsall and WR Kendrick Bourne were both targeted twice, but neither caught a pass, and WR Demarcus Robinson gained a yard on his only catch. LB Dee Winters tied for the team lead with nine tackles, including three tackles for loss, and LB Eric Kendricks also had nine stops. S Malik Mustapha chipped in eight tackles and a sack.
Footballguys view: The 49ers offense came in shorthanded due to injuries and then lost Jake Tonges during the game and also didn't have Christian McCaffrey for part of the game. It was just too much for them to overcome against a great and balanced team like Seattle. The 49ers overachieved when you consider what they lost to injury, but the team needs to figure out what they seem to have such bad injury luck.

San Francisco 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall (knee) was limited during practice Thursday, Jan. 15, and is listed as questionable for the Divisional Round playoff game.
Footballguys view: The game is on Saturday in Seattle. There's no telling about Pearsall's status right now, but it's all hands on deck in the Divisional Round. Pearsall will play if he can.

San Francisco 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall (knee) was limited during practice Wednesday, Jan. 14.
Footballguys view: Pearsall missed the Wild Card Round, but he's possibly going to suit up in the Divisional Round. This knee problem has hampered him all season long.
Free-agent WR Colton Dowell (Ravens) signed a Reserve/Future contract with the San Francisco 49ers Wednesday, Jan. 14. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Link to storySan Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (Achilles) will have surgery for his torn right Achilles tendon on Wednesday, Jan. 14. He suffered the injury in the team's NFC Wild Card game victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Footballguys view: Kittle now is looking at a return during the 2026 season. It's unlikely the veteran tight end will be ready for Week 1. Instead, Kittle may have to miss a month or two to begin the 2026 season as he recovers from this major injury in his age-33 season.

San Francisco 49ers LB Fred Warner (ankle) had his practice window to return from injured reserve opened on Tuesday, Jan. 13.
Footballguys view: Warner won't play on Saturday against the Seahawks, but if the 49ers win, coach Kyle Shanahan says they're hopeful he can be ready to play for the NFC Championship. As Profootballtalk.com reminded readers, Warner dislocated and fractured his right ankle in Week 6, and at the time, it was described as a season-ending injury. But Warner has worked hard in his rehab and believes he could play now. The 49ers are being a little more cautious than that, but if they win on Saturday, it sounds like there's a good chance he'll be on the field eight days later.

San Francisco 49ers LB Fred Warner (ankle) is unlikely to have his practice window open this week, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Sunday, Jan. 11, and the NFC Championship Game remains the earliest possible return date for Warner.

San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy completed 18-of-31 passes for 262 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, while running nine times for 24 yards, in the NFC Wild Card game road win against the Philadelphia Eagles. RB Christian McCaffrey rushed 15 times for 48 yards, while posting six receptions for 66 yards and two touchdowns, including a 29-yard TD from WR Jauan Jennings. The latter had one reception for 45 yards on three targets and the scoring strike. WR Demarcus Robinson led the way with six receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown on seven targets, while FB Kyle Juszczyk absorbed all four targets for 49 yards, with TE Jake Tonges posted a 14-yard catch on three targets, stepping in for TE George Kittle (Achilles), who had one grab for six yards before leaving with a ruptured Achilles. LB Garret Wallow had 11 total stops with five solo tackles and a pass defensed, while LB Eric Kendricks, a former Eagle, had 10 total stops with seven solo tackles, two stops for loss and a pass break-up to seal the win.
Footballguys view: The 49ers offense was getting pushed around early, but Brock Purdy completed a few big plays and the defense make enough stops to keep the team hanging around. A trick play perfect Jauan Jennings throw to Christian McCaffrey for a touchdown gave the 49ers the lead in the second half, and then McCaffrey caught another score to regain the lead in the waning minutes. Losing George Kittle to an achilles tear is a big blow to the offense. The 49ers were only able to muster three points against the Seahawks back in Week 18 with the #1 seed on the line, and that's where they will go in the divisional round.

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (Achilles) has been ruled out for the remainder of the NFC Wild Card game against the Philadelphia Eagles after suffering a torn Achilles tendon on his first reception of the game in the second quarter.
Footballguys view: Kittle being ready for Week 1 next season is a stretch. Backup Jake Tonges was productive at times in place of Kittle earlier in the season. He is a restricted free agent, so the 49ers will have to pony up around $3.5M if they want to have the right to match any contract offered to Tonges, who went undrafted in 2022.

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (lower leg) suffered an apparent lower-leg injury on his first reception in the second quarter of the NFC Wild Card game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He immediately went down after his right leg was bent awkwardly, and he grabbed at the lower-leg area before being carted off.

Link to storySan Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy faces the Philadelphia Eagles in the wild-card round, and the Eagles allowed a league-low 14 passing touchdowns in the regular season.
Footballguys view: Purdy is battling a left shoulder injury, but he will be out there in the Wild Card Round. The Eagles have a tough defense with DC Vic Fangio, but we're certain Kyle Shanahan will have a gameplan to move the ball effectively so long as Purdy executes the plays as designed.
San Francisco 49ers OT Trent Williams (hamstring) is considered a game-time decision for the Wild Card game versus the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday, Jan. 11, but is confident that he will play. He was listed as questionable on the injury report after participating in two of San Francisco's three practice sessions during the week on a limited basis.

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (ankle) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 9, and is not on the injury report for the Wild Card playoff game.
Footballguys view: In his age-32 season, Kittle has managed a handful of injuries this year. Practicing in full and being removed from the injury report should give fantasy managers full confidence in starting him this week.
George Kittle player page
San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (non-injury) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 9, and is not on the injury report for the Wild Card playoff game.
Footballguys view: McCaffrey finished the season as the top-scoring running back and enters this game with no restrictions. He's a great option in all fantasy formats, even up against a stout Eagles' defense.
Christian McCaffrey player page
San Francisco 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall (ankle, knee) did not participate in practice Friday, Jan. 9, and is listed as questionable for the Wild Card playoff game.
Footballguys view: Given the nature of Pearsall's injuries this season, it's really difficult to trust him in fantasy lineups, even if he is active. If he plays, he'll likely take a backseat to Jauan Jennings, George Kittle, and Christian McCaffrey in the receiving game.
San Francisco 49ers LB Luke Gifford (quadriceps), WR Ricky Pearsall (ankle, knee), DE Keion White (groin, hamstring) and LB Dee Winters (ankle) did not participate in practice Thursday, Jan. 8. San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (non-injury) fully participated in practice Thursday, Jan. 8.
Footballguys view: McCaffrey was just getting some rest as he usually does during the week of practice. He's good to go for Sunday's game against the Eagles. The best chance of the 49ers winning is a big day from McCaffrey.

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (ankle) was limited during practice Thursday, Jan. 8.
Footballguys view: Kittle's a seasoned veteran, so we're not going to get too concerned that he's not a full participant on Thursday. He made it through Week 18 without any setback, and the team is limiting him to get their superstar tight end as close to full strength as possible. He should be out there against the Eagles on Sunday.

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (non-injury) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Jan. 7.

San Francisco 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall (knee) recently aggravated the posterior cruciate ligament injury in his knee and will be reevaluated later in the week, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Footballguys view: Pearsall's situation has remained tenuous since he returned from a right knee injury in Week 11. He reinjured his ankle and knee in Week 15 against Tennessee, missed the following week against Indianapolis, and then returned last week against Chicago. Saturday was Pearsall's eighth missed game. For the season, he had 36 receptions for 528 yards. He had four catches for 108 yards in the Week 1 meeting with Seattle. Kendrick Bourne and Demarcus Robinson move up in the rotation behind Jauan Jennings in Pearsall's absence. That will continue as needed.
San Francisco 49ers LB Fred Warner (ankle) has not been ruled out for the season, but head coach Kyle Shanahan said Warner will not be a possible option until the NFC Championship game at the earliest.
Footballguys view: The 49ers are suddenly thin at linebacker. Warner hasn't played since dislocating and fracturing his right ankle in Week 6, and his replacement, Tatum Bethune, is now out for the season after tearing his groin in the Week 18 loss to the Seahawks. Shanahan said Bethune might need surgery. Eric Kendricks will now take over. Linebackers Dee Winters (ankle) and Luke Gifford (quad) will be evaluated later this week.
