49ers | Ricky Pearsall expected back soon    Wed Jul 24, 11:38 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall (hamstring) is expected to be cleared for practice soon after their off day Sunday, July 28.

Footballguys view: Pearsall was the team's first-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft. He can make plays when the ball is in his hands after the catch, plus he's got speed to attack a defense vertically. He's currently no.3 on the depth chart behind Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk.

49ers | George Kittle had massive weight fluctuation post-surgery    Tue Jul 23, 02:43 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle told reporters on Tuesday, July 23, that his weight dropped to 214 pounds this offseason as he recovered from core muscle surgery. He has since returned to his normal playing weight of 243 pounds.

Footballguys view: As Footballguy Dave Kluge pointed out earlier this year, Kittle quietly bounced back in 2023. After trending down for four consecutive years in yards per route run, he hit a league-high 2.30 last year. It's the fourth time he's led all TEs in YPRR and his first time since 2020. Kittle finished 2023 as TE6 and currently carries a TE7 Average Draft Position.

49ers | Tough start to rookie campaign for Ricky Pearsall    Tue Jul 23, 02:03 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall (hamstring) was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list on Tuesday, July 23. Last week, the 49ers placed Pearsall on the Active/Non-Football Injury list.

Footballguys view: Pearsall, a first-round pick out of Florida, is an intriguing talent. But the 49ers don't have much need for an immediate contributor unless there's movement elsewhere on the receiving corps. Brandon Aiyuk has reported to camp but has requested a trade as part of his efforts to get a new contract. If Aiyuk is dealt, Pearsall will be of interest. If Aiyuk stays, Pearsall will be a bit player in a productive offense.

49ers | Brandon Aiyuk plans to report to camp    Tue Jul 23, 01:38 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk intends to report to the start of training camp despite his frustration over his contract situation, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Aiyuk is set to make just $14.1 million in 2024 on his fifth-year option. The former first-round pick has made no secret of his desire to receive a new contract from San Francisco or be traded to another team willing to give him a new, lucrative deal. But to this point, the 49ers haven't offered the reported $30 million a year Aiyuk is looking for or move him to another team. As Profootballtalk.com suggests, even though he's reporting, Aiyuk could still stage a hold-in by not participating in practice until his contract situation is resolved. This approach would allow him to avoid fines for his absence. We'll continue to monitor this situation.

49ers | Five teams willing to meet Brandon Aiyuk's demands    Sat Jul 20, 10:46 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk's agent was reportedly given permission to speak to other teams prior to the 2024 NFL Draft, to see if they would be willing to pay his client what he was looking for in a long-term deal. During an appearance on ESPN's 'The Pat McAfee Show' Friday, July 19, ProFootballTalk.com's Mike Florio said that five NFL clubs wanted to meet his salary demands but none of those teams were able to work out a trade with the 49ers.

Footballguys view: The 49ers insist they are not going to move on from Aiyuk. However, for the right price, we imagine they'd trade the All-Pro receiver. There are five teams who would pay Aiyuk the price he wants, which likely makes him one of the highest-paid receivers in the league, but until a trade is done the point is moot.

49ers | No serious injury for Ricky Pearsall    Wed Jul 17, 12:38 AM

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall (undisclosed) is on the Active/Non-Football injury list but is not believed to be dealing with a serious injury.

Footballguys view: This is not a serious injury with 49ers' rookies reporting to training camp. Pearsall, a first-round pick out of Florida, could play a larger role than some think this season. Let's see how the Brandon Aiyuk situation plays out. If Aiyuk is dealt, then Pearsall will get a bump in targets and snaps. If Aiyuk stays, Pearsall will learn the ropes in a reserve/no.3/no.4 role behind him and Deebo Samuel.

49ers | SF not looking to move Brandon Aiyuk    Wed Jul 17, 12:38 AM

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk has requested a trade, but the 49ers have been telling teams that are not interested in trading him, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The 49ers are playing hardball here. They won't move Aiyuk...but likely would for the right price. Aiyuk is coming off an All-Pro season, and he's set to become one of the highest-paid receivers in the NFL. The two sides have met recently, but no contract was agreed upon. Aiyuk is under contract through this season...stay tuned.

49ers | With Contract Talks Stalled, Brandon Aiyuk Requests A Trade    Tue Jul 16, 01:58 PM

Brandon Aiyuk's offseason of contractual discontent has reached a crossroads. The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver has requested a trade, NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo reported on Tuesday.

Footballguys view: Aiyuk's request comes after an offseason filled with unsuccessful attempts to agree on an extension with the 49ers, who have been unwilling to negotiate since May, per Garafolo. Aiyuk, set to earn 14.124 million in the final year of his rookie contract, decided to ask for a trade after a recent meeting failed to produce any movement, Garafolo added. The wide receiver is coming off a 75-catch, 1,342-yard, 7-touchdown season. He didn't participate in the 49ers' offseason program and skipped the team's mandatory minicamp. He is subject to fines of over $101,000 for boycotting the minicamp. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, teams that have reached out and spoken to San Francisco have been told that the 49ers have no intention of trading Ayiuk. The team opens training camp next week.

49ers | George Kittle delivered big plays    Sun Jul 14, 02:40 AM

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle led all tight ends with 15.7 yards per reception last year, and his 7.4 yards after the catch were tied for the most at the position.

Footballguys view: Kittle is one of the best in the game, and he should continue to be a big part of what the 49ers do on offense. He's tough to bring down after the catch, and that's why his numbers in that category are so healthy. This year, Fantasy GMs are drafting Kittle as a mid-range TE1 as per usual. We don't think he matches the 1,000-yard mark he did a year ago, but projecting Kittle for around 65 catches, 850 yards, and six receiving touchdowns sounds about right.

49ers | Brock Purdy benefited from teammates' YAC ability    Thu Jul 11, 02:15 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy led all qualified passers with 6.7 yards after catch per completion during the 2023 season, according to Pro Football Reference.

Footballguys view: Purdy runs the 49ers' offense to perfection. He makes quick decisions, gets the ball out to his receivers, and he watches them work after the catch. Expect more of the same this season, and that means the 49ers will be paying the former "Mr. Irrelevant" a bunch of money in the not-so-distant future.

49ers | Jacob Cowing could return punts    Sun Jul 7, 09:31 AM

San Francisco 49ers rookie WR Jacob Cowing is expected to fulfill a role similar to the one previously occupied by WR Ray-Ray McCloud, who joined the Atlanta Falcons as a free agent this offseason. The team views him as a punt returning option who can also serve as a backup to WR Deebo Samuel.

49ers | Ricky Pearsall seeing time at different positions    Sun Jul 7, 09:17 AM

San Francisco 49ers rookie WR Ricky Pearsall has been used at multiple receiver positions in the offense but could make his biggest impact as a punt returner, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner.

Footballguys view: The 49ers could move Pearsall around the formation to influence (and trick) opposing defenses. The first-round rookie has plenty of speed and moves after the catch. Moving him around just makes sense, and it should be exciting to watch. We'll have to see how the targets are distributed between Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and Pearsall at the wide receiver position. Pearsall makes for a great late-round flier in deeper leagues just in case he 'hits' in this explosive offense.

49ers | No progress on Brandon Aiyuk extension    Thu Jul 4, 02:43 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk is not any closer to a contract extension with the 49ers despite meeting with the team last week, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. Aiyuk has not asked for a trade request at this point.

Footballguys view: Deadlines spur action, and we aren't at any kind of meaningful deadline for this situation. If Aiyuk holds out from training camp, we could see movement here, but since Aiyuk is under contract for $14+ million this year, the 49ers can take the position of having him play out the last year of his contract and revisit a long term extension after the season, but before free agency. The most likely outcome here still seems to be the two sides find a middle ground before the season and Aiyuk signs a long term deal. We should project the 49ers offense with Aiyuk while we wait for resolution here.

49ers | Christian McCaffrey could see lighter workload    Sun Jun 30, 10:39 AM

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is hoping to reduce the workload of RB Christian McCaffrey during the upcoming season so that he can remain healthy and continue performing at a high level. In 2023, McCaffrey played a higher percentage of his team's offensive snaps than any other NFL running back, including every offensive snap in three regular-season contests and all but 11 snaps in their three playoff games.

Footballguys view: This is no reason to move McCaffrey down in drafts and it could actually make him more likely to be available in the all important fantasy playoff weeks. Elijah Mitchell is still the clear #2 back, and if he can stay healthy this year, the team should be more willing to give McCaffrey a rest during games. Third round pick Isaac Guerendo might not be ready for a big role in the NFL yet, and the team just doesn't seem to be sold on Jordan Mason as more than a third string back and special teams contributor.

49ers | SF, Brandon Aiyuk have good meeting    Thu Jun 27, 08:19 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk had a positive meeting with the 49ers Monday, June 24, and the 49ers plan on having Aiyuk play for them this season, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Aiyuk has not asked for a trade at this point.

Footballguys view: The public tone from Aiyuk has gotten more contentious, and he was seen with new Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels on the heels of reports that the Commanders tried to trade for Aiyuk. Still, the meeting represents progress, and all reports have the two sides close enough on compensation that it is more likely that a deal gets done than not. At this point, staying in San Francisco is best for Aiyuk's short and long term value and that's what we should expect to happen.

49ers | Teammate Sees A More Confident Brock Purdy This Offseason    Tue Jun 25, 05:02 PM

If 2022 was Brock Purdy's introduction to the NFL and 2023 was the quarterback's official arrival, 2024 is setting up to be his graduation. At least, that's how his 49ers teammates of past and present see his career progressing. George Kittle noticed an uptick in confidence from Purdy when watching the quarterback work during San Francisco's offseason program. "He looks like the guy, which is really nice," Kittle told NBC Sports Bay Area on Sunday. "He's in the building every day and is the same guy every single day, consistent. He's incredibly competitive. It's fun seeing him yell at guys when they don't hit their route depth or have the wrong landmark."

Footballguys view: While some consider him a game manager in Kyle Shanahan's offense, fantasy managers shouldn't see that as a limitation. NFL.com's Nick Shook noted, "Synergy is paramount for a play-caller and a quarterback, and the 49ers undoubtedly have that with Purdy and Shanahan." Meanwhile, Purdy, who finished last season as QB6, is being drafted as QB13 in Underdog best balls. As Footballguy Jason Wood wrote this week: "[Purdy] was an MVP candidate for much of last season and a bonafide elite fantasy option, yet he is perceived as the consolation prize in drafts this year."

49ers | Brandon Aiyuk Requested Meeting With 49ers    Tue Jun 25, 05:00 PM

Brandon Aiyuk can't figure out how to get the 49ers to give him what he wants. He tried to skip OTAs and minicamp. He tried expressing his displeasure on social media. But the 49ers still won't budge. They reportedly have offered him $26 million per season, which is what he's worth to them but not what he'd be worth on the open market, where he'd get more than $30 million per season. But he's not a free agent. He's under contract for one more year and then the 49ers could franchise tag him two times after that if they want to. So he's stuck. That's why he requested a meeting with the 49ers on Monday.

Footballguys view: ESPN's Ryan Clark said after interviewing Aiyuk for his podcast that the wideout requested the meeting with team officials. He added that Aiyuk is "taking negotiations personal." ESPN's Adam Schefter reported there were conversations between the 49ers and the Commanders at one point. "The Commanders were interested," Schefter said. "But they decided not to do that deal." As SI.com's Grant Cohn suggested, when talking contract, they treat Aiyuk like a high-level No. 2 receiver who's a replaceable product of Kyle Shanahan's system. When other teams try to trade for Aiyuk, the 49ers act like he's an elite No. 1 receiver who's worth a first-round pick and more. Hence, Aiyuk's frustration . . . Stay tuned.

49ers | Brandon Aiyuk meeting with team    Mon Jun 24, 04:08 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk is meeting with the 49ers Monday, June 24, according to ESPN's Ryan Clark.

Footballguys view: The drama is ongoing for Aiyuk, who suggested in a TikTok video he posted that the Niners don't want him back. That seems unlikely, but the ongoing contract situation is real. Aiyuk is slated to earn $14.1 million in the final year of his rookie contract. He's looking for more than $30 million. The team has offered something closer to the $28 million a year the Lions gave Amon-Ra St. Brown in April. We'll continue to follow up on this while reminding you the 49ers have no issue dragging negotiations out as long as necessary.

49ers | Brock Purdy sees improvement    Fri Jun 21, 12:05 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy said he believes he has improved during offseason workouts because he is more experienced.

Footballguys view: It's easy to forget that Purdy is only entering his third season in the league. He's still cheap in redraft and best ball leagues, but could take another step forward after almost winning the Super Bowl in his second season last year.

49ers | Ricky Pearsall signs rookie contract    Fri Jun 21, 12:05 PM

San Francisco 49ers first-round draft choice WR Ricky Pearsall signed a four-year contract with the 49ers Thursday, June 20, worth $12.5 million. The deal includes a fifth-year option.

Footballguys view: Now we wait to see what the next move in the Brandon Aiyuk drama. If Aiyuk is traded, Pearsall will get a big boost in best ball and redraft leagues. If Aiyuk is signed to a long term deal, Pearsall may not get significant action until 2025, and only if the team is able to trade Deebo Samuel next offseason. It's also possible that Aiyuk plays for the team this year without a new deal, which would leave the possibility of an in-season trade open in the event that the relationship between the receiver and the team breaks down.

49ers | George Kittle dropped weight    Thu Jun 20, 09:25 AM

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (core) said he lost around 30 pounds this offseason after undergoing core muscle surgery but has started training again and feels close to full strength. He said he would like to add around 10 more pounds to feel like he is in playing shape.

Footballguys view: Kittle is the classic glass half full/glass half empty player. This could still be seen as a positive item because Kittle played about half of the season with this injury last year and now that it has been surgically corrected, it shouldn't affect him. It can also be seen as a negative simply because of the weight loss signifying that this won't be a typical offseason for Kittle. Fantasy players have bumped him down to TE7, which more than prices in the sometimes bumpy ride that comes with drafting Kittle.

49ers | SF wants to keep Brandon Aiyuk    Wed Jun 19, 03:11 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk is a player the 49ers wants to sign to an extension but are not willing to match his asking price at this point, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The negotiations are not believed to be dead at this point.

Footballguys view: We're probably talking about the difference between something like 26 and 28 million per year. Aiyuk's camp is going to push for the most they think they can get in an ever-rising wide receiver salary scale, while the 49ers are going to be measured and pay Aiyuk what they think will get him to sign when the dust settles. That the two sides are still looking for middle ground is a good sign that this will get done. Any team trading for Aiyuk would have to pay him at a level that make the 49ers reluctant and give up a good draft pick to boot.

49ers | Ricky Pearsall Working In A Variety Of Spots    Tue Jun 18, 04:28 PM

Ricky Pearsall has been exactly as advertised. The Niners have used him at multiple receiver positions in the offense and as a punt returner, which is probably his best ticket to touching the ball early in his rookie year.

Footballguys view: According to ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner, the team wants Pearsall to be able to step in anywhere in case of injury, and he so far has proved plenty versatile, according to coach Kyle Shanahan. "We're getting him a lot of reps, getting a lot of different routes, trying all the positions and we've been really impressed with how he's started off," Shanahan said. The Athletic's Matt Barrows also had great things to say about Pearsall in a conversation last weekend, noting in particular that Pearsall gives the team flexibility should they eventually move on from one of their current starters.

49ers | Brandon Aiyuk hints cloudy future with 49ers     Mon Jun 17, 02:03 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk told Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels over FaceTime that the 49ers 'don't want me back' in a video that surfaced Monday, June 17. Aiyuk is currently seeking a new deal with the 49ers.

Footballguys view: Aiyuk is under contract at $14.1 million in 2024. He reportedly wants $30 million or more per year. So, as PFT's Mike Florio noted, in saying "they don't want me back," Aiyuk might be saying they don't want him after this season. Or maybe he's saying they don't want him because they won't offer what he wants. The Athletic's Matt Barrows told us last weekend that the team has offered Aiyuk slightly less than the $28 million a year Amon-Ra St. Brown got from Detroit last month. Barrows also contends the two sides will eventually reach an agreement. Barrow added the 49ers often take these deals to "the bitter end." We'll continue monitoring this situation while reminding you the public portions of negotiations tend to be the most contentious.

49ers | Report: Brandon Aiyuk Looking For More Than Team's $26 Million Offer    Tue Jun 11, 04:56 PM

The 49ers and receiver Brandon Aiyuk continue to remain at an impasse as to the value of his next contract. The draft came and went without a trade to a new team, which means no other team was willing to both give Aiyuk what he wants by way of money and the 49ers what they want by way of compensation. Via NBC Sports Bay Area, Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle recently said that the team's most recent offer to Aiyuk is in the range of $26 million per year.

Footballguys view: As Profootballtalk.com's Mike Florio pointed out, That's well below the $35 million high-water mark set last week by Justin Jefferson. It also would trail the likes of A.J. Brown ($32 million), Jaylen Waddle ($28.25 million), and Amon-Ra St. Brown ($28 million). Aiyuk, currently set to make $14.1 million this year, has pointed to St. Brown's deal as his desired target. Whatever the 49ers are offering, Aiyuk wants more. He skipped last week's mandatory minicamp. The next question is whether he'll report for training camp without a new deal. We'll continue to watch for more.

  49ers | Elijah Mitchell a trade candidate?    Sat Jun 8, 03:32 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Elijah Mitchell is the 'clear No. 2' running back, according to David Lombardi of The Athletic, and Lombardi points out that the 49ers have previously traded backups Matt Breida and Jeff Wilson Jr. when they have had depth at the running back position.

Footballguys view: With solid 2022 UDFA Jordan Mason and this year's third round pick Isaac Guerendo behind Mitchell, the team has the depth to deal the speedy, but oft injured backup. If 2024 UDFA Cody Schrader, who was a standout at Missouri last year, impresses in camp, it will make the 49ers decision even easier. Of course, there would have to be a trade market for Mitchell's services, but at least the Cowboys should be interested in any established running back that is available via trade.

49ers | Brandon Aiyuk may have to pay fines    Sat Jun 8, 03:17 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk is scheduled to be fined for skipping the mandatory minicamp, and the team does not appear interested in forgiving the fines at this point, according to The Athletic's Matt Barrows.

Footballguys view: From the outside looking in, it appears the 49ers have made a long term offer to Aiyuk that they think is fair, but that the receiver is not satisfied with. It's possible that he's seeking Amon-Ra St. Brown money (around $30 million a year) and the 49ers just aren't prepared to pay that. If Aiyuk plays out this season under his fifth year option, the 49ers could still tag him next year. it's also possible that they trade him before the deadline during the season if the relationship breaks down. The most likely outcome here is still that the 49ers and Aiyuk find middle ground on a long term deal.

49ers | Ricky Pearsall making a strong first impression    Wed Jun 5, 02:56 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall is 'doing a really good job' and has 'really impressed (the coaching staff)' with how he has looked during offseason work, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.'He's doing a really good job. He's got really good hands, so he always catches it. He's rarely going to have a drop. We're giving him a lot of reps, he's getting a lot of different routes, he's trying all the positions. We've been really impressed with how he's started off,' Shanahan told The Athletic's David Lombardi.

Footballguys view: Pearsall is a perfect fit for what the 49ers are looking for at the wide receiver position. He's a creative receiver before and after the catch. Pearsall fights for yards after the catch, and he understands pursuit angles to outrun defenders to the spot. Pearsall can move the chains, and he could quickly become a favorite target for QB Brock Purdy. This year, Pearsall is working to establish a pecking order with guys like Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel.

  49ers | Brandon Aiyuk A No-Show At Mandatory Minicamp    Tue Jun 4, 03:39 PM

Matt Maiocco of NBCSportsBayArea.com reports that Aiyuk has not reported to the team's facility for their only mandatory work of the offseason. Aiyuk also stayed away from the team throughout the voluntary phases of work.

Footballguys view: Aiyuk is subject to over $100,000 in fines for missing the three-day minicamp, although, as Profootballtalk.com suggests, he likely sees that as a price worth paying if it should help him land a long-term extension. There has also been trade chatter regarding Aiyuk throughout the offseason, but 49ers general manager John Lynch indicated that was no longer on the table after the draft.

49ers | Christian McCaffrey Gets Two-Year Extension; Resets RB Market    Tue Jun 4, 03:01 PM

Reigning Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey once again has reset the RB market, signing a two-year extension with the 49ers, averaging $19 million per year, per sources. McCaffrey will receive an additional $8 million over what he was scheduled to make in the first two years while adding $24 million in guarantees.

Footballguys view: If the running back market was going to be reset, McCaffrey doing it should surprise nobody. In his first full season with the 49ers after joining them at the trade deadline in 2022, McCaffrey led the NFL in rushing yards (1,459), yards from scrimmage (2,023), and touchdowns (21) despite sitting out the regular-season finale after San Francisco had clinched home-field advantage and a bye in the playoffs. He averaged 22.1 opportunities per game. Beyond that, from a fantasy perspective, nobody posted a better average per-game scoring average (from Weeks 1-17) than McCaffrey's 24.7. His three-down skill set in this running back-friendly offense gives MaCaffrey a solid claim to RB1 status and the No. 1 overall spot for 2024.

49ers | Logan Thomas agrees to terms    Mon Jun 3, 06:24 PM

Free-agent TE Logan Thomas (Commanders) agreed to terms with the San Francisco 49ers Monday, June 3, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Thomas will backup George Kittle in the role Charlie Woerner held before he left for the Falcons in free agent. Kittle is recovering from offseason surgery, but said he expects to be ready for the start of training camp. In 2023, Thomas made 55 receptions for 496 yards and four touchdowns in 16 games with Washington.

49ers | George Kittle on track for camp    Thu May 30, 01:16 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (core) is recovering from offseason surgery but said he expects to be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: The glass half full take here is that Kittle was still very close to his 2022 per game scoring playing with the injury for more than half of the season. If he can stay healthy this year, Kittle can easily outproduce his TE7 ADP. The glass half empty take is that this is more evidence that Kittle can't stay healthy for an entire season even though his only missed game last year was resting with the starters in Week 18.

49ers | Ricky Pearsall limited Wednesday    Thu May 30, 01:16 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall (undisclosed) wore a no-contact jersey during the voluntary workout Wednesday, May 29.

Footballguys view: There was no update on why Pearsall was wearing the jersey, but he hasn't missed any time in OTAs. More important than that is Pearsall impressing in extended time with the first team while Jauan Jennings and Brandon Aiyuk have been away from the team. Jennings getting an extension has rekindled speculation that Deebo Samuel could get dealt, which could open a path to value for Pearsall in his rookie year.
