49ers | Ricky Pearsall to miss start of camp Fri Jul 18, 04:33 PM
San Francisco 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall (undisclosed) was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Friday, July 18.
Footballguys view: Pearsall picked up a hamstring injury about a month ago at minicamp. After missing the end of training camp last year, he'll hope to rejoin the team for a full camp this preseason. Like Aiyuk, he can be activated from the preseason PUP list at any time. He'll hope to get out there sooner rather than later, especially while Jauan Jennings is expected to miss practice after asking for a trade. |
San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk (knee) was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Friday, July 18.
Footballguys view: After suffering a Week 7 ACL tear last year, Aiyuk's early-season games are in jeopardy. However, it is worth noting that players can be activated at any time off the preseason PUP list. We'll keep a close eye on his activity in camp, but those drafting him now should brace for a backup option during the early part of the year. |

San Francisco 49ers WR Jacob Cowing might 'carve out an important role' during training camp, per Vic Tafur of The Athletic, who writes that the team likes his 'toughness, speed, and nose for yards after catch.' Tafur adds that Cowing could inherit 'a lot' of the gadget plays that current Washington Commanders WR Deebo Samuel got during his time with the 49ers.
Footballguys view: There has been a consistent drumbeat here. Nobody with the 49ers has taken advantage of the offseason like Cowing, according to reports. He's worked on his speed out of breaks, and Cowing has added weight to his frame. In deeper leagues, we like taking Cowing as a late-round flier pick with upside. |
San Francisco 49ers DT Alfred Collins reached an agreement on a four-year, $10.3 million deal that includes over $9 million guaranteed, per sources.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers QB Kurtis Rourke (knee) was placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury list Wednesday, July 16.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers QB Kurtis Rourke (knee) is expected to start training camp on the Active/Non-Football Injury list.
Footballguys view: No surprise here. Rourke partially tore his ACL during practice prior to the start of Indiana's 2024 season. The Ohio State transfer (and 49ers' seventh-round draft pick) played through the injury during his senior year before undergoing surgery in January. There's some Aidan O'Connell to his game, and Rourke is clearly a developmental pick who 49ers GM John Lynch believes would have gone higher in the draft if not injured. Dynasty GMs (deeper leagues) take note. |
Updating an earlier report, San Francisco 49ers WR Jauan Jennings isn't expected to hold out of training camp if he doesn't receive a new deal. Jennings has approached the 49ers about his request, but little progress has been made, a source told ESPN. If a new deal is not reached by the time training camp starts next week, Jennings plans to request a trade to a team willing to pay him. Entering 2025, Jennings is slated to count $4.258 million against the cap in the final year of the two-year, $15.39 million extension he signed last offseason. The 49ers feel they have treated him fairly, a source said.
Footballguys view: Again, with Brandon Aiyuk recovering from a torn ACL, Jennings is expected to play a robust role to open the season -- and likely beyond. Although we don't expect a quick resolution, there's nothing here that changes Jennings' fantasy value. He is currently being drafted as WR38 (in Round 7). That's excellent value for a player who delivered the second-highest single-game fantasy points total of the year among all wideouts (46 PPR points) in Week 3 against the Rams. |
Jauan Jennings player page
San Francisco 49ers WR Jauan Jennings, who is scheduled to make $7.5 million this season in the final year of his deal, wants a new contract or a trade, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Jennings signed a two-year, $15.4 million deal with the team in March 2024. But after leading San Francisco's wideouts with 77 catches, 975 yards, and six touchdowns last season, his desire to be better compensated isn't a huge surprise. With Brandon Aiyuk still recovering from a torn ACL and MCL, Jennings is likely a key figure in San Francisco's offensive plans in the coming season. A front-loaded deal this year -- before multiple extensions (including Brock Purdy's) kick in next year -- is doable. For our purpose, Jennings currently has a very affordable seventh-round price tag. |

During a brief period this offseason when FB Kyle Juszczyk was a free agent after being released by the San Francisco 49ers, he visited the Pittsburgh Steelers. Although he was impressed with the Steeler organization, Juszczyk had been told by 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan that there was a possibility that he could return to them. 'It was a different experience,' Juszczyk said of his meeting with Pittsburgh. 'It was a chance to go look at a different team and I felt a lot of love from them. I got excited for a second about what possibly could be, about new beginnings and fitting into a new offense, all that type of stuff. And I genuinely enjoyed my time with Arthur Smith and Mike Tomlin so much. I have so much respect for those guys. But at the end of the day, it just wasn't enough to trump what I had in San Francisco. I just couldn't pull the plug.'
Link to storyKyle Juszczyk player page
San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey 'looks incredible ... and so explosive,' according to FB Kyle Juszczyk.
Footballguys view: It's a small quote, and these are the type of things often heard in the offseason. "Player A" in the best shape of his life! "Player B" going to be better than ever! That's all nice and well, but with McCaffrey everyone already knows how talented he is at full strength. Fantasy GMs who are taking McCaffrey near the end of the first round (current ADP of RB5) will have to have a plan in place if he misses more time. Isaac Guerendo is in line to be McCaffrey's primary backup in 2025. |
Christian McCaffrey player page
San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk (knee) could be ahead of schedule in his rehab, and there's a small chance he could be ready for Week 1, according to team insider Matt Maiocco on KNBR 680. 'I hear he's doing really well,'I hear that the knee is even ahead of schedule,' Maiocco said. 'Also, from what I understand, is it's not out of the question that he could be ready Week 1. I think the feeling inside the organization has always been don't take any chances, start him off on PUP when they report to training camp July 22, and then more than likely, just have that carry over into the regular season.'
Footballguys view: We should see Aiyuk begin training camp on the PUP list, which gives the team the option to begin Aiyuk on the PUP list to begin the regular season. The veteran receiver is working his way back from the torn ACL and MCL he suffered in Week 7 last season. He's unlikely to look like himself until the midway point of the 2025 regular season - at the earliest. Aiyuk has a current ADP of WR47. |

San Francisco 49ers WR Demarcus Robinson pleaded no contest to misdemeanor DUI charge and was sentenced to three years' probation. He also was ordered to pay a $390 fine and to complete court-mandated programs, including a three-month alcohol education program, according to multiple media outlets that cited court records.
Footballguys view: Now that the legal process has concluded, Robinson needs to wait and see if the NFL suspends him. 49ers GM John Lynch said the team knew that Robinson could draw a suspension for his DUI arrest when they signed him. Some reporters believe Robinson could be suspended early in the season. If that's the case, the 49ers (with Brandon Aiyuk recovering from his ACL injury) could be using Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall quite a bit at the beginning of the season. |
Demarcus Robinson player page
San Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones has 'a lot of traits' the team looks for in a starting quarterback, according to offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak. 'I think Mac's capable of being a starter in this league,' Kubiak said.
Footballguys view: As an unrestricted free agent in March, Jones wanted a chance to play for a coach who has a track record of squeezing the most from his quarterbacks. Kyle Shanahan was the obvious choice. There are no guarantees for Jones, but before signing with the Niners, he noted the ascent of Sam Darnold, another former high draft pick who struggled elsewhere, went to San Francisco, subsequently enjoyed success with the Vikings, and signed a sizable free-agent deal with the Seahawks. |
Mac Jones player page
San Francisco 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall worked out with QB Brock Purdy multiple times this offseason, both in their native Arizona and also in Jacksonville, where Purdy works on his throwing fundamentals each year.
Footballguys view: Pearsall missed minicamp due to a hamstring injury, but he's working out with his quarterback. He needs to stay healthy, because his rookie season was held back due to injury problems. He compiled 31 catches, 400 yards, and three touchdowns in 11 games last year. This season, Pearsall looks like a WR5/deep flex option for Fantasy GMs. |
San Francisco 49ers WR Isaiah Neyor - an undrafted free agent this spring - has caught the eye of teammate George Kittle with his freakish athleticism, according to comments he made recently on the 'Bussin' With The Boys' podcast.'I like him. He's a freak. ... I watched him, he was running a route and he got like 9 1/2 yards in two strides. ... It was insane. We watched it like 10 times in the tight end room. We were like 'How is he doing this?'' Kittle said.
Footballguys view: Neyor went undrafted, but he has the size/speed/athleticism of a starting NFL wide receiver. He's only of interest right now in deep dynasty leagues, but if he makes the 53 man roster out of training camp, it will be time to put Neyor on our radar in all dynasty leagues. |
San Francisco 49ers CB Deommodore Lenoir was arrested in Los Angeles for obstruction of justice on Thursday, June 26. According to multiple reports, police approached a group of people and saw a gun in a parked car. When the driver was asked to his keys over, he threw the keys to Lenoir, who refused to allow the officers to have access to the car.
Footballguys view: While this is a minor incident and probably would not result in a significant suspension, it is still worth noting after the 49ers and Lenoir agreed on a five-year, $92 million deal this offseason. He's been a quality starter for them and will be their #1 corner after Charvarius Ward signed with Indianapolis this offseason. |

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle said he believes he will continue his career until it feels no longer fun to play. 'I don't know, I think if I get to 35 and it hurts to put pants on in the morning, I think I'll be like, 'Ah, this isn't that much fun anymore,' and I'll have a conversation with myself. But I'm feeling great right now,' Kittle said.
Footballguys view: Tight ends maintaining elite production into their 30s isn't that unusual. Kittle will be 32 this year, but he's coming off a TE1 finish just last year. With Deebo Samuel traded and Brandon Aiyuk on the mend, the early-season passing attack should revolve around Kittle. While many drafters are turning to Brock Bowers and Trey McBride as the shiny new toys, Kittle, going rounds after both, is a great value in drafts. |

San Francisco 49ers WR Jacob Cowing's performance during organized team activities has impressed QB Brock Purdy. 'He's getting in and out of cuts and he's the first one to lead lines and show guys how routes are supposed to be run,' Purdy said. 'He's making a huge leap there.'
Footballguys view: He's standing out to his quarterback, and that's something to note this slow time of year. It's also something to keep track of when training camp and the preseason get here. Cowing had some Tyler Lockett comparisons when he came out of Arizona in 2024 as a fourth-round pick for the 49ers. He's got speed, route-running ability, and plays with a high football intelligence. In a crowded room behind WR Brandon Aiyuk, Cowing could stand out in the preseason. Stay tuned. |
San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle may receive more routes this upcoming season because the team can use TE Luke Farrell as a blocking tight end in two-tight end sets, according to general manager John Lynch.
Footballguys view: Last year, Kittle stayed in to pass block on 11.6 percent of the team's passing plays -- his highest mark since 2021. In 2023, when they played more multi-TE personnel, he was on pass blocking on 7.0 percent of the team's pass plays. As USA Today's Kyle Madson suggests, with question marks at wide receiver, having Kittle, who led the team with 1,106 receiving yards and eight touchdown catches last year, available as often as possible makes sense. His consistent production over time makes his TE3 average draft position and fourth-round price this summer appealing. |

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch said WR Ricky Pearsall is an ascending player and that he is confident that Pearsall will play well this upcoming season.
Footballguys view: As Fansided.com noted, a crisp route runner with a quick first step and solid burst, Pearsall has excellent hands and thrives after the catch. Meanwhile, Deebo Samuel Sr. was traded to the Commanders, and Brandon Aiyuk is set to start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, coming off a torn ACL suffered last October. That puts Pearsall in line to open the season as the starter opposite Jauan Jennings. So even if Pearsall's WR41 price seems high, he'll have ample opportunity to build on his strong finish last season. |
San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk (knee) is doing a 'tremendous job' with his recovery from knee surgery, according to general manager John Lynch.
Footballguys view: Offseason comments about Aiyuk have outlined a wide range of outcomes in his return from ACL surgery. Anything from a Week 1 return ("a chance" per Kyle Shanahan) to beginning the season on the PUP list and missing the first 4 games is in play. Aiyuk won't be trustworthy in lineups in his first week back and it could take some time for him to knock off of the rust, especially if he misses all of training camp. It will be 10 and a half months since his ACL tear (October 20, 2024) when the season opens. Aiyuk is going after Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall in drafts, but he could be the most valuable of the three in the second half of the season. |

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (Achilles, knee) participated in every phase of voluntary OTAs and the mandatory minicamp, and he even took reps during team drills, which was rare among the team's established stars, per ESPN's Nick Wagoner.
Footballguys view: Good news for the 49ers here. Everyone knows McCaffrey is a stud who can be the best back in the league when healthy. It's that staying healthy part that is unknown. McCaffrey says he feels 'great' after being dogged by injuries in 2024. |

San Francisco 49ers QB Kurtis Rourke (knee) is not expected to be ready for the start of training camp, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers WR Jauan Jennings (calf) is not participate in the mandatory minicamp but is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Footballguys view: With the timetable for Brandon Aiyuk's return from last year's torn ACL still uncertain, a cautious approach with Jennings makes sense. Coming off his most productive campaign as a pro, Jennings and Ricky Pearsall are expected to be the team's top receivers heading into Week 1. In case you missed it, Jennings set career highs in targets (113), receptions (77), receiving yards (975), and touchdowns (6) in 2024. He heads into the summer with a WR37 Average Draft Position and a Round 7 price. |
Jauan Jennings player page
San Francisco 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall (hamstring) is not participating in the mandatory minicamp this week, but head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated that Pearsall should be ready for the start of training camp.
Footballguys view: With Brandon Aiyuk likely sidelined at the start of the 2025 season after last year's torn ACL, Pearsall and Jauan Jennings are projected as the Week 1 starting wide receivers. That being the case, a cautious approach with Pearsall's hamstring seems wise. Pearsall finished his rookie campaign with 31 receptions for 400 yards and three touchdowns. He ended the season on a high note, hauling in 14 catches for 210 yards and two touchdowns over the final two games. That late surge shouldn't be lost on fantasy investors, who'll find Pearsall available as WR41 in Round 8. |
San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk (knee) is not expected to be ready for the start of training camp in late July, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan on Tuesday, June 10.
Footballguys view: Although his timeline is unclear, Aiyuk was spotted lightly jogging and coaching up teammates during Tuesday's practice, a positive sign in his recovery. "He's making his way back," Shanahan said. "He's still in the middle of it. So, he's working through that. He's been around, been rehabbing for the most part, but he's been out to some practices, and it was good to have him out today." Still, with Aiyuk likely sidelined at the start of the 2025 season, Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings are projected as the Week 1 starting wide receivers. |

San Francisco 49ers WR Jauan Jennings (undisclosed) participated in individual drills during practice Wednesday, June 4, but sat out team drills.
Footballguys view: While the San Francisco 49ers struggled to secure six wins last season, Jennings had his most productive campaign. He set career highs in targets (113), receptions (77), receiving yards (975), and touchdowns (6). Now entering the final year of his contract, Jennings is in line to be the 49ers' top wideout in Week 1, especially with Brandon Aiyuk recovering from a significant knee injury. Jennings is currently a solid value, going as WR34 on Underdog in Round 6. |

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle participated in individual drills and some team drills during practice Thursday, May 29.
Footballguys view: This doesn't sound especially worrisome. Kittle, RB Christian McCaffrey, and DE Nick Bosa all had a bit of a reduced workload but also participated in individual drills and some of the no-helmet 11 versus 11. We'll watch for more, but going easy on proven veterans in OTAs makes a lot of sense. |

San Francisco 49ers WR Jordan Watkins looked 'fast and fluid' and was one of the few rookies to have a prominent role during OTAs Thursday, May 29, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.
Footballguys view: Watkins has plenty of speed and moves in the open field, so it's no surprising he's turning heads at OTAs. We'll see what he can do as training camp gets here. Watkins is down the depth chart (fifth or sixth) but has added value as a return man option as well. |
San Francisco 49ers WR Jauan Jennings was the favorite target of QB Brock Purdy during OTAs Thursday, May 29, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.
Footballguys view: Let's keep an eye on this as the offseason rolls on. The 49ers are dealing with banged up wide receivers missing time in Brandon Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall. Depending on when Pearsall is ready, Jennings could be in line to be the team's no.1 receiver to begin the season. We like him as a WR3/flex option from a fantasy perspective. |
Jauan Jennings player page
San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk (knee) did not participate in drills during OTAs Thursday, May 29.
Footballguys view: No surprise here. Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL and MCL last season and likely won't even be ready at the start of the season as he continues to rehab. Reports earlier this year indicated Aiyuk could be ready around the middle of the regular season. |

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (Achilles, knee) 'looked electric' during OTAs Thursday, May 29, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.
Footballguys view: 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that McCaffrey is as â€"healthy as can be†and that the team must â€"protect him from himself.†Everyone knows McCaffrey is an elite playmaker when healthy, but it's been the staying healthy part that has been a problem in recent years. McCaffrey has injury risk, but is seen as a low-end RB1 for Fantasy GMs in 2025. Isaac Guerendo could get more work to keep McCaffrey fresh as the year goes on. |

San Francisco 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall (undisclosed) attended the offseason workout Thursday, May 29, but did not participate.
Footballguys view: Pearsall (hamstring) is dealing with a hamstring injury and likely will be sidelined until training camp, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. When healthy, Pearsall has plenty of flex appeal for Fantasy GMs out there. |

Free-agent P Thomas Morstead (Jets) signed an undisclosed deal with the San Francisco 49ers Wednesday, May 28.
Link to storyFormer Jacksonville Jaguars assistant general manager Ethan Waugh is expected to return to the San Francisco 49ers, according to a source. Before his time with the Jaguars, Waugh served as the 49ers' vice president of player personnel from 2021 to 2022.
Footballguys view: The move makes sense as Waugh worked for the 49ers for 17 years. When Trent Baalke left the 49ers for the Jaguars a few years ago, Waugh followed him to Florida. With Baalke fired, and James Gladstone hired, Waugh now goes back to the 49ers in a yet undetermined role. |
Updating previous reports, San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy officially signed his new contract on Tuesday, May 20. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers DE Alex Barrett was released Monday, May 19.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers LB Fred Warner agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension with the 49ers Monday, May 19, worth $63 million. The deal includes $56.7 million in guaranteed money.
Footballguys view: After completing lucrative contract extensions with quarterback Brock Purdy and tight end George Kittle in recent weeks, the 49ers had one more key player to take care of to wrap up their most pressing offseason business. While Purdy's deal represented the largest deal in team history (five years for $265 million, including $181 million in overall guaranteed money) and the biggest raise the Niners have ever handed out, Warner's extension always figured to be a bit easier because he had two years remaining on the five-year, $95 million deal he signed in 2021. With Warner, 28, Purdy, and Kittle signed before the on-field portion of organized team activities begin, the 49ers can rest easy from a business standpoint as they head toward training camp. |
Fred Warner player page
Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy received a no-trade clause for the duration of his five-year deal.
Footballguys view: The reported five-year, $265 million contract means Purdy gets financial security and control over his future. More immediately, Purdy, who finished as QB13 last year, sits at QB14 on the 2025 Footballguys Projections. While his numbers took a hit during the 2024 season, it's important to note the absence of a handful of key offensive weapons as San Francisco had brutal injury luck with a few of its star players as the 49ers stumbled toward a 6-11 record. Despite the down season, Purdy, who finished as QB6 in 2023, will play a significant role in getting what the team hopes will be a healthier offense back on track. If that's the case, fantasy investors could easily end up with QB1 production at a QB2 price. |
San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension with the 49ers Friday, May 16, worth $265 million. The deal includes $181 million in guaranteed money, and Purdy will receive $165.05 million in the first three years of the extension.
Footballguys view: For Purdy, "Mr. Irrelevant" as the last pick in the 2022 NFL draft, the new contract will go down as one of the biggest raises in NFL history. Under the terms of his rookie deal, he was set to count just $5.365 million against the cap in 2025. The new deal should come as no surprise. Since he took over as the starter for an injured Garoppolo in Week 13 of 2022, including playoffs, the Niners are 27-15 in games Purday started. In that time, he ranks third in the NFL in passing yards (9,452), first in yards per attempt (8.9) and seventh in touchdown passes (64). In 2024, playing missing key members of his supporting cast, including Christian McCaffrey (Achilles, knee), Brandon Aiyuk (knee), Trent Williams (ankle), tight end George Kittle (hamstring), and receiver Deebo Samuel (calf, illness, ribs) for varying amounts of time, Purdy finished as fantasy's QB13. He sits at QB14 on the 2025 Footballguys Projections. Investors could do worse for their QB2 this year. |
San Francisco 49ers LB Nick Martin should fill the starting linebacker spot vacated by LB Dre Greenlaw's departure in free agency, according to Field Yates of ESPN.com.
