Cowboys | Rotational role for Javonte Williams?    Thu Jun 5, 01:35 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Javonte Williams will likely be 'strictly in a rotational role' this season, in the opinion of ESPN's Bill Barnwell, who adds that there's a 'slim-but-plausible chance' that Williams doesn't even make the 53-man roster out of camp. Williams signed a one-year, $3 million deal with Dallas, but only $1 million of that is guaranteed.

Footballguys view: Williams has not looked the same since a major knee injury in his second year (2022) with the Broncos. Now with the Cowboys, Williams is the lead back but in a room with Miles Sanders and Jaydon Blue. In an RBBC that could be a three-headed unit, Williams is looking more like an RB4/deep flex option for a fantasy perspective in 2025.

Cowboys | Micah Parsons will report    Wed Jun 4, 09:13 AM

Dallas Cowboys EDGE Micah Parsons announced on social media that he'll be at minicamp next week. A long-term deal is not done, but Parsons indicated he would report and prepare like he's going to be there for the first day of training camp.

Footballguys view: Parsons did not indicate whether he would participate in the minicamp, and it seems unlikely he does any on-field work. As for training camp, Parson said that he will join the team in Oxnard, California, in July only if he has signed a contract extension by then. That was the expectation, with the four-time Pro Bowl still awaiting an extension. Parsons, 25, became eligible for an extension after the 2023 season, and he's expected eventually to get an extension that will top Ja'Marr Chase's annual average of $40.25 million, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league.

Cowboys | CeeDee Lamb sidelined Tuesday    Wed Jun 4, 12:04 AM

Dallas Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb (shoulder) did not participate in the team's OTA session Tuesday, June 3.

Footballguys view: This seems like a non-issue, and a source told Athlon, there were "no red flags." The consensus WR1 heading into 2024, Lamb's numbers dipped noticeably when Dak Prescott was lost to a hamstring injury. Add in a shoulder injury of his own, and it helps explain how Lamb went from averaging an NFL-best 23.8 fantasy points per game in 2023 to 17.6 points per game this past season. Still, Lamb is the fourth player off the board in early drafts going as the WR3.

Cowboys | Javonte Williams could be more flexible    Mon May 26, 10:35 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Javonte Williams (knee) said he could be more flexible, but he is completely healed from a 2022 surgery to repair a torn ACL, PCL and MCL in his knee.

Footballguys view: That's great news. The next job for Williams will be locking himself as the primary ball carrier in the Cowboys' run game behind what Dallas is hoping is an improved offensive line that can open up running lanes and help create play-action opportunities. Williams will be competing with fellow free agent Mile Sanders and rookies Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafa. Williams is the early favorite to earn the top job based on his 10th-round price as RB27. Blue is next, going in Round 12.

Cowboys | Javonte Williams feeling good    Sat May 24, 11:10 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Javonte Williams said he feels like himself for the first time since suffering a serious knee injury in 2022. He has received a majority of the work with the first-team offense during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: Williams is expected to be the lead back for the Cowboys this year with Miles Sanders providing some help in their RBBC. Last year as the Broncos top back, Williams was unimpressive with just 513 yards on the ground. He's a decent receiving option out of the backfield as evidenced by his 99 catches over the last two seasons. Williams may not be what he used to be after this injury, but he can be a solid back who can run between the tackles, catch a few passes a game, and he's great in pass protection. Fantasy GMs see him as an RB3/flex option in 2025.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott not fully cleared    Wed May 21, 01:15 PM

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott (hamstring) is able to do most things during offseason workouts but has not been cleared for contact at this time.

Footballguys view: Prescott, who underwent surgery Nov. 13 last year, started his rehab soon after. Despite the no-contact limitations, he told reporters he is ahead, not behind, in his offseason work. It's worth noting the 32-year-old has missed a total of 26 games in the past five seasons with ankle, calf, thumb, and hamstring injuries. That said, Prescott has finished as a fantasy QB1 every year he's played a full 16- or 17-game season. That's six times in nine years. He's currently being drafted as QB16 in early best-ball drafts.

Cowboys | CeeDee Lamb finally feeling right    Tue May 20, 04:57 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb (shoulder) told reporters on Tuesday, May 20, that he needed 'a good five months of real recovery and rehab' before the shoulder injury that ended his 2024 season felt right.

Footballguys view: The consensus WR1 heading into 2024, Lamb went from averaging an NFL-best 23.8 fantasy points per game in 2023 to 17.6 points per game this past season. That was more due to QB issues than his shoulder. Lamb averaged 18.5 fantasy points in eight games with a healthy Dak Prescott last season. He was the WR4 during that time. In his final seven games, all played without Prescot, Lamb averaged 16.5 points. He dropped to WR11 before missing the final two games due to the shoulder. Lamb is currently the fifth player off the board on Underdog as the WR3.

Cowboys | Head coach pleased with George Pickens so far    Tue May 20, 02:55 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR George Pickens is 'a guy (who is) maturing,' according to head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

Footballguys view: Pickens has said all the right things since he arrived in Dallas. Most recently, the newcomer told reporters he would accept any role that came his way. He also claims to pay little attention to labeling receivers as Nos. 1a and 1b or No. 2. He realizes, however, that CeeDee Lamb put up more than 100 catches in three straight seasons and has four straight 1,000-yard seasons. Still, Pickens gives the Cowboys the boundary X they've been missing -- and, as Athlon's Landon Holifield suggests, "balances Lamb's versatility inside and out." While Dallas hasn't had a wide receiver other than Lamb reach 700 receiving yards since 2021, that should change this year. Pickens' Footballguys Projection has him at WR41, with 64 catches, 935 yards, and six touchdowns.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott will be involved at OTAs    Tue May 20, 01:52 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott (hamstring) will do most of the first-team work during voluntary organized team activities, head coach Brian Schottenheimer said on Tuesday, May 20.

Footballguys view: A healthy Prescott should be on our fantasy radars heading into the 2024 season. After all, he's finished as a QB1 six times in his career -- every year, he's played a full 16- or 17-game season. He led the NFL with 36 touchdown passes and finished as QB3 as recently as 2023. That's a lot of upside for a quarterback with a flashy new weapon (George Pickens) to go with his even flashier holdover weapon (CeeDee Lamb). It's all even more appealing with Prescott going as QB16 -- up two spots since the NFL Draft and the Pickens trade -- in the 11th round of early best-ball drafts.

Cowboys | DAL unlikely to make further moves at running back    Sun May 18, 11:18 AM

The Dallas Cowboys are not expected to make any further moves at running back this offseason, after signing RBs Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders in free agency and drafting RBs Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah.

Footballguys view: Many thought the Cowboys would do more, but all offseason they've insisted they're happy with this group. Cowboys HC Brian Schottenheimer expressed support for Williams at the owner's meetings (and coaches breakfast) earlier this year. Williams is the season veteran who is sound as a runner, receiver, and in pass protection. However, he's not been the same since injuring his knee with the Broncos a few years ago. Let's see if Williams can win this job in camp, but expect the team to use multiple backs in an RBBC that Fantasy GMs may avoid.

Cowboys | Dallas Doesn't Necessarily View George Pickens As A WR2    Mon May 12, 03:39 PM

During an interview with Adam Schein of Mad Dog Sports Radio, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said that the Cowboys think of newly-acquired WR George Pickens' as more than a two.'

Footballguys view: Jones elaborated on that point to Albert Breer of SI.com. "He's just a dynamic receiver," Jones said. "Everybody says we're looking for a two. I mean, George can be a one. He's got that type of talent. He's got unbelievable ball-tracking ability. He's got plenty of juice, and he's a fiery competitor. We love that he plays with an edge and think he'd be a good fit for our team." While they might see him as a WR1, fantasy investors should view Pickens as the complement to CeeDee Lamb, which this offense has been missing.

Cowboys | Dallas checked in on Rashod Bateman    Sat May 10, 11:33 AM

Baltimore Ravens WR Rashod Bateman received trade interest from the Dallas Cowboys before the Cowboys acquired WR George Pickens, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reports the Cowboys discussions with Baltimore went nowhere, forcing the Cowboys to pivot to another AFC team in Pittsburgh. The deal was made, the Steelers were weakened, and Baltimore hung onto an ever-improving player. In a 28-25 win over Dallas last September, Bateman had three catches for 28 yards (9.3 avg) and one touchdown. It was his most impactful regular season since getting drafted by Baltimore, with career highs in receiving yards (756) and touchdowns (nine) on the second-highest catch total of his career (45) across 17 games. Bateman is a solid fantasy WR4 or WR5 that's capable of helping investors cover bye week or injury-related absences.

Cowboys | Jaydon Blue to have early role?    Sat May 10, 11:09 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Jaydon Blue should be able to play early as a third-down back, according to ESPN's Matt Miller.

Footballguys view: Miller noted that Blue may be a fifth-round pick, but Dallas lacks a home run threat and strong receiving back. In the College Football Playoffs, Blue showed how impactful he can be when matched up against linebackers and safeties as a route runner. With Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders available to handle early-down, between-the-tackles work, it'll be worth watching Blue to see if he can make good on Miller's expectations.

Cowboys | Jalen Tolbert moves down the depth chart    Thu May 8, 12:45 AM

Dallas Cowboys WR Jalen Tolbert is likely to be the player 'most impacted' by the acquisition of WR George Pickens, in the opinion of ESPN's Todd Archer, who notes that Tolbert split time between the WR2 and WR3 spots a season ago based on whether former Cowboys (and current New Orleans Saints) WR Brandin Cooks was available.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Tolbert is now expected to slide into the No. 3 role behind Pickens and WR CeeDee Lamb. In 17 games last year, Tolbert caught a career high 49 catches for 610 yards and seven touchdowns. That was good for the no.39 ranking in standard-scoring leagues at the wide receiver position. With the addition of Pickens, Tolbert goes more into 'what the heck' flex territory than he was a WR4/deep flex option in 2024.

Cowboys | George Pickens not looking for deal yet    Wed May 7, 01:05 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR George Pickens is not looking to sign a contract extension at this point because he wants to show he can be a top receiver for a team, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Pickens enters the final year of his four-year rookie contract. He's due to make $3.526 million. Profootballtalk.com's Mike Florio wrote: "It will be impossible for the Cowboys to justify paying Pickens without seeing him play, especially since they still haven't paid a dominant defensive player they have seen play for four years (in Micah Parsons)." Even if they decide to keep Pickens, it will be hard for him to get what he reportedly wants -- $30 million per year. Combined with the deal CeeDee Lamb signed last year (that pays an average of $34 million annually), that would be a lot of money to invest in the receiver position. Still, it's something the Cowboys and their new receiver can work out over time.

Cowboys | George Pickens Traded to Dallas    Wed May 7, 09:22 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR George Pickens and a 2026 sixth-round pick were acquired from the Pittsburgh Steelers Wednesday, May 7, in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys' search for a No. 2 wide receiver opposite Pro Bowler CeeDee Lamb is over. Lamb will continue to dominate the targets in Dallas, but Pickens will get an upgrade with Dak Prescott at quarterback. Pickens should be viewed as a WR3 with upside in his new home.

Cowboys | Report: Dallas, Amari Cooper Have Some Mutual Interest    Tue May 6, 12:46 PM

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Dallas Cowboys "have not yet ramped up negotiations" with star edge-rusher Micah Parsons. "That doesn't mean they will not. They are budgeting for that," Fowler reported Sunday on SportsCenter. Fowler went on to say Dallas could use some of its available salary cap space to bolster the receiving corps, with the Cowboys and Amari Cooper having "some mutual interest" in a reunion.

Footballguys view: Cooper is coming off a disappointing 2024 season. His 44 receptions, 547 yards, and four touchdown grabs were all career lows. With the team not taking a wideout in the 2025 NFL draft, the five-time Pro Bowler would at least provide some depth behind CeeDee Lamb. Remember, the Cowboys traded for Cooper in 2018, with a first-round pick going the other way. The former Raider remained in Dallas for another three seasons, topping 1,100 receiving yards on two occasions. With Lamb emerging as the team's WR1, Cooper was dealt to the Browns in March 2022 as part of a late-round pick swap agreement. In addition to Lamb, the Cowboys currently have Jalen Tolbert, Jonathan Mingo Parris Campbell, and returner KaVontae Turpin on their depth chart.

Cowboys | Dallas not feeling need to target RB?    Fri Apr 25, 01:48 PM

Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones told 105.3 The Fan on Friday, April 25, that he doesn't 'feel the need to reach' when asked about selecting a running back in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Cowboys currently have Javonte Williams, Miles Sanders, Deuce Vaughn and Malik Davis vying for backfield snaps.

Footballguys view: Sitting at no.12 overall in the first round, some felt the Cowboys may go with Omarion Hampton (North Carolina). Instead, they build their offensive line with OG Tyler Booker (Alabama) in the first round. This is an incredibly deep draft at the running back position, so the Cowboys could find a really good player in the second or third round.
