Cowboys | Receivers Jalen Tolbert, Jalen Brooks Impressed In OTAs    Mon Jun 24, 05:28 PM

With CeeDee Lamb skipping the voluntary portions of the offseason program, it opened up more opportunities for young receivers Jalen Tolbert and Jalen Brooks. Both showed flashes of ability.

Footballguys view: According to ESPN.com's Todd Archer, Brooks was able to work through traffic well, especially on tight throws on slants. Tolbert worked all three receiver spots and was able to make plays at all different levels. With Michael Gallup gone and the Cowboys not adding a veteran wideout as of yet, Tolbert or Brooks could be in line for the No. 3 role behind Lamb and Brandin Cooks. Previous reporting has suggested a potential breakout season is coming for Tolbert. Jon Machota of The Athletic told us in May, "In a perfect world for the Dallas Cowboys, Tolbert will make a considerable jump" this season.

Cowboys | Jake Ferguson hopes to continue improving    Sat Jun 15, 12:22 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Jake Ferguson said he hopes to make a similar jump in play this upcoming season like he did from 2022 to 2023. He posted only 174 yards in 2022 but improved to 761 yards last season.

Footballguys view: 2023 second round Luke Schoonmaker is hurt again with a hamstring issue that caused him to miss OTAs. He has also already missed time with shoulder and foot injuries. Ferguson came on with the rest of the Cowboys pass offense in the second half of the season and could be a good value pick at tight end if Schoonmaker continues to struggle with injuries.

Cowboys | Rico Dowdle a strong contender to start?    Tue Jun 11, 03:32 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Rico Dowdle reportedly has a very good chance of being the 'RB1 favorite' this season, according to multiple sources close to the team.

Footballguys view: At 6-foot, 215-pounds, Dowdle has a great blend of size and speed. His well-rounded game makes him a potential do-it-all back in the image of Ezekiel Elliott. But USA Today contends Dowdle's strength and explosiveness add in an element of big-play potential severely lacking from the team's committee of runners. The article acknowledges that Ezekiel Elliott will have a significant role, but it also projects Dowdle for 10-12 attempts per game. It's a situation worth watching when training camp opens.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott First In Line, But Cowboys Will Lean Into Committee Approach    Tue Jun 4, 03:44 PM

Head coach Mike McCarthy has said there will be a running back by committee approach in Dallas this season, but the committee members are still to be determined. McCarthy said he doesn't know yet how many backs will be splitting carries. "Two or three [running backs], whatever it takes," McCarthy said.

Footballguys view: As PFT's Michael David Smith put it, "With last year's leading rusher Tony Pollard now a Titan, the Cowboys are making changes at running back, and McCarthy sounds ready to be patient in setting his running back depth chart this season." At the moment, it looks like the returning Ezekiel Elliott will be atop the depth chart, with Rico Dowdle behind him and Royce Freeman, Deuce Vaughn, Hunter Luepke, Malik Davis, Snoop Conner, and Nathaniel Peat competing for roster spots. Expecting Elliott to take the lead is reasonable. We project him to have 180 carries. That leaves plenty of room for others to chip in.

Cowboys | McCarthy Confirms CeeDee Lamb Is Absent From Mandatory Minicamp    Tue Jun 4, 03:43 PM

Cowboys star WR CeeDee Lamb has not been spotted in Dallas for mandatory minicamp, sources say. Lamb has not been present for voluntary OTAs, but is not reporting to minicamp, which subjects a player to fines. Coach Mike McCarthy confirms CeeDee Lamb is not present but says, "He's been engaged."

Footballguys view: McCarthy adds that it's a "business decision" and has no issues with how his the team's veterans prepare. A first-round pick in 2020, Lamb is entering the final year of his rookie contract on the fifth-year option. He's currently set to make $17.991 million in 2024. After Justin Jefferson reset the receiver market with his contract extension on Monday, Lamb is one of the next in line at the position to receive a new deal. Lamb, 25, is set to incur roughly $100,000 in fines for missing all of mandatory minicamp.

Cowboys | Talks With CeeDee Lamb Expected To Speed Up    Mon Jun 3, 04:46 PM

Long-time NFL insider Josina Anderson is told talks between the Cowboys and WR CeeDee Lamb are expected to "speed up" --beyond its previous pace -- since "there's at least a number" with the announcement of Vikings WR Justin Jefferson's record-setting non-quarterback contract extension today, per source.

Footballguys view: Lamb is set to make just under $18 million in the final year of his rookie contract, and the wideout is skipping voluntary sessions as the two sides work on a contract extension. Lamb led the NFL with 135 receptions last season, but his target share is further evidence of his importance to this offense: QB Dak Prescott targeted Lamb 179 times last season. Every other Cowboys wide receiver drew a combined 182 targets. Expect this one to get done before September. The Cowboys realize it gets more expensive as other deals get done.

Cowboys | Dallas committed to Dak Prescott    Sun Jun 2, 10:44 AM

Negotiations between the Dallas Cowboys and QB Dak Prescott on a contract extension have been described as 'passive' so far, although the team wants to get a deal done before he hits free agency in 2025, according to ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler.

Footballguys view: If the team is truly committed, then they will get a deal done. There's always enough money, teams just have to figure out the cap situation. Prescott is in the final year of his current deal and will earn $55.455 million in 2024....unless a new deal is made. The team could lower Prescott's cap number this year while also giving him more security. Prescott will continue to be among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league - whether it's in Dallas or somewhere else in 2025.

Cowboys | Jalen Tolbert prepping for big year?    Sun May 26, 01:29 AM

Dallas Cowboys WR Jalen Tolbert appears more confident this season, according to head coach Mike McCarthy. 'He's taken leaps and bounds in that area,' McCarthy said. 'I think anything that's consistent in this game, the more confident that the individual is, his physicality, his urgency, the understanding of detail, the competitiveness, vastly increases.'

Footballguys view: Tolbert has been developing for a couple of seasons with the Cowboys, and now he's ready to do more. A former third-round pick (South Alabama), Tolbert is competing for the no.3 spot on the depth chart behind CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks. Reports indicate Tolbert has been tightly working with QB Dak Prescott this offseason. In this offense, we like Tolbert as a lottery ticket pick late in deeper leagues.

Cowboys | Luke Schoonmaker likely out until camp    Thu May 23, 01:47 PM

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys TE Luke Schoonmaker (hamstring) is expected to miss the rest of the organized team activities because of his hamstring injury.

Footballguys view: Like the rest of the Cowboys pass offense, Jake Ferguson got a boost when the offense was centered more around Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb in the second half of the season. Dallas took Schoonmaker in the second round last year and may have expected him to be the tight end of the future, but he hasn't stayed healthy. Ferguson is the tight end of the present and worth if falls far past his TE9, 7th/8th round ADP in early drafts.

Cowboys | Luke Schoonmaker sidelined    Wed May 22, 01:31 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Luke Schoonmaker (hamstring) is not participating in organized team activities due to an unspecified hamstring injury, head coach Mike McCarthy said on Wednesday, May 22.

Footballguys view: Schoonmaker is a player we appreciate in dynasty formats, but he's currently battling Peyton Hendershot for the no.2 job behind Jake Ferguson. All three tight ends are similar with their skill set, so if you like what Ferguson has shown then you should expect similar things from Schoonmaker - if healthy and when he gets the opportunity.

Cowboys | Coaches Have High Hopes For Jalen Tolbert    Tue May 21, 03:50 PM

The Cowboys aren't expecting CeeDee Lamb at their organized team activities and that will give more time for the team's other receivers to make an impression on the coaching staff. One player who will be watched closely is Jalen Tolbert.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys have not made any veteran additions to the group after the departure of Michael Gallup, which leaves Tolbert on track to be the No. 3 wideout behind Lamb and Brandin Cooks during the 2024 season. During a conversation with us last Saturday, Jon Machota of The Athletic explained it like this: "In a perfect world for the Dallas Cowboys, Tolbert will make a considerable jump" this season. As our WR85, Tolbert is a free-square play heading into training camp.

Cowboys | CeeDee Lamb not expected at OTAs    Mon May 20, 08:06 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb is not expected to participate in the organized team activities that start Tuesday, May 21, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: Lamb is set to make just under $18 million in the final year of his rookie contract, and the wideout skipping voluntary sessions has been expected as the two sides work on a contract extension. Remember: Lamb led the NFL with 135 receptions last season. He racked up 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns along the way. More indicative of his importance in Dallas, Prescott targeted Lamb 179 times last season. Every other Cowboys wide receiver drew a combined 182 targets. Expect a deal to get done, even if it takes until early September.

Cowboys | Deuce Vaughn to see increased role?    Sun May 19, 10:43 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Deuce Vaughn could see more offensive snaps out of the slot in the 2024 season, in order to take advantage of his speed, agility and ability to change directions, in the opinion of CowboysWire's Reid Hanson.

Footballguys view: We've heard this report before, so let's see if things come to fruition when the Cowboys get to training camp, the preseason, and (of course) the regular season. Vaughn barely saw the field as a rookie in 2023, but the second-year back has a different skill set than others in the Dallas backfield. Ezekiel Elliott is there to make Jerry Jones happy (and plunge up the middle of the line) with Rico Dowdle being a solid backup. Vaughn is a perfect change-of-pace from those two, but right now his fantasy ceiling seems to be limited.

Cowboys | Jake Ferguson focused on consistency    Fri May 17, 10:07 AM

Dallas Cowboys TE Jake Ferguson said he wants to prove that his improvement last season wasn't a fluke. 'In this league you can't be complacent,' Ferguson said. 'You've got to just keep going. You've got to keep getting better and that's what I aim to do.'

Footballguys view: Ferguson is consistent in his effort and production. That's why he's a low-end TE1 option in 2024. He did have a surge in production from Week 13 on last year, and perhaps he can carry some of that momentum over to this season.

Cowboys | OC not worried about CeeDee Lamb's absence    Fri May 17, 10:07 AM

Dallas Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb has not been participating in voluntary workouts this offseason because of his contract situation, but offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said he is not worried because he believes Lamb will be ready to play when he returns.

Footballguys view: Lamb is one of the best in the game. He's going to be ready as soon as the work in mandatory, and Fantasy GMs should expect top-5 production in 2024.

Cowboys | No progress on Dak Prescott deal    Thu May 16, 10:55 AM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott has experienced no progress in talks about an extension, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys appear to be ready to allow Prescott to hit free agency next season. They can't use the franchise tag on him, and Prescott has a no trade clause. He isn't going to get cheaper unless the team craters this season, so it's hard to see what the Cowboys strategy here is unless they are really unsure that they want to go forward with Prescott as their starting quarterback. But if that is the case, they have made no plan for the quarterback position after Prescott, so that also seems incoherent. It's hard to know what the future holds for Prescott or the Cowboys right now.

Cowboys | DAL to use committee at running back    Sun May 12, 09:16 AM

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said the team will use a running back by committee approach this season, unlike the feature back approach used during RB Ezekiel Elliott's first tour of duty with the team. McCarthy said that he has not seen any drop off in the way Elliott moves but thinks it wouldn't be fair to give him a workload similar to what he saw in the early seasons of his career.

Footballguys view: Elliott is back to lead the way, but he's going to be splitting time with Rico Dowdle. It will be interesting to see if Duece Vaughn can stay healthy and look better than he did last year as a rookie. Royce Freeman is there as well in case Elliott gets banged up or Dowdle struggles. They have some talent, but it's not a clear situation at all - and they could add another back if someone hits the waiver wire they like. Overall, this is a 'let someone else deal with it' situation for Fantasy GMs out there.

Dallas Cowboys WR Martavis Bryant was released on Wednesday, May 8, per source.

Footballguys view: Bryant signed a futures deal with the Cowboys earlier this year after spending last season on their practice squad. Reports indicate that other teams are interested in Bryant, but he hasn't played a regular-season down since 2018. If/when he ever gets on the field, one should not be expecting much.

Cowboys | Zay Jones visiting Dallas    Wed May 8, 11:53 AM

Free-agent WR Zay Jones (Jaguars) is visiting with the Dallas Cowboys Wednesday, May 8.

Footballguys view: Jones' father, Robert, was a first-round pick for the Cowboys in the 1992 NFL draft, and it would be cool to see him sign with his father's old team. Released by the Jaguars after the draft, Jones has garnered some interest from the Titans in addition to the Cowboys.   Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott back to Dallas    Mon Apr 29, 08:10 AM

Free-agent RB Ezekiel Elliott (Patriots) agreed to a undisclosed deal with the Dallas Cowboys Monday, April 29.

Footballguys view: Elliott will likely be a significant contributor in his return to Dallas. The Cowboys did not select a running back in last weekend's draft despite losing leading rusher Tony Pollard in free agency. With Rico Dowdle, Royce Freeman, and Deuce Vaughn also available, Elliott might not handle all the carries. Still, expecting him to get enough to work to return value on his current RB60 Average Draft Position, is more than reasonable.
