Cowboys | Dallas confident it can keep Dak Prescott    Thu Jul 25, 03:24 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott is entering the final year of his contract, but team owner Jerry Jones emphasized to reporters on Thursday, July 25, that he does not believe 2024 will be Prescott's final season with the team.

Footballguys view: What Jones wants, Jones usually gets. The team has prioritized WR CeeDee Lamb when it comes to contract extensions but Prescott is not far behind. The entire offense will flow through the passing game, and that means Prescott could be a value for Fantasy GMs this season.

Cowboys | Dallas to prioritize negotiations with CeeDee Lamb    Sun Jul 21, 09:15 AM

The Dallas Cowboys are expected to prioritize negotiations with WR CeeDee Lamb on a contract extension over talks with QB Dak Prescott on a long-term deal because of Lamb's intentions to hold out from training camp. Prescott is expected to participate in the team's first practice session Thursday, July 25.

Footballguys view: It's an interesting move given that the NFL is a quarterback-desperate league. Lamb is a superstar, and he could lead the NFL in receiving this season. However, the Cowboys offense is going to flow through the passing game in 2024. That means a lot of Prescott (and Lamb) will be the plan. In the end, the Cowboys need to find a way to secure both of their services going forward.

Cowboys | Brandin Cooks ready to rebound?    Fri Jul 19, 01:45 AM

Dallas Cowboys WR Brandin Cooks was on the same page with QB Dak Prescott during OTAs and minicamp this year, according to The Athletic's Jon Machota, who noted that their connection particularly stood out on deep balls and it was clear the duo had spent a full year working together.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys won't get much help from their ground game this year, so it's all about Dak Prescott and the passing game. CeeDee Lamb is a superstar who could lead the league in receiving yards this season, but it's going to take more than just him. That means Cooks could step into much more opportunity than some think. We'll see TE Jake Ferguson get plenty of work too. Cooks is our WR51 in 12-team PPR leagues, but there's potential for him to do more.

Cowboys | Mazi Smith bulking up    Thu Jul 11, 07:12 PM

Dallas Cowboys DT Mazi Smith (shoulder) has been adding weight during the offseason, reaching 305 pounds and climbing, in his bid to play 3-technique under new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. A 2023 first-round pick, Smith has increased pressure to perform following a disappointing rookie season in which he struggled to gain comfort within Dan Quinn's system.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott has discussed extension recently    Wed Jul 10, 03:33 AM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott recently revealed that he and his agent have had 'some conversations' regarding a new contract, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys need to get Prescott's extension done, but they also are looking to extend superstar WR CeeDee Lamb. Prescott should be getting a contract similar to what Jared Goff and Trevor Lawrence signed earlier this offseason. That would put him in the above $50MM annually crowd. With little support from the ground game, the Cowboys offense is going to be all about Prescott, Lamb, and the passing game in 2024.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott's ankle is fine    Tue Jul 9, 11:41 AM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott (foot) said there is absolutely nothing wrong with his ankle.

Footballguys view: Now, in addition to multiple reports from local and national outlets, we have it directly from the horse's mouth -- again. Speaking at his youth football camp on Tuesday, Prescott continued to insist that there's no cause for concern after he was seen wearing a protective boot. "Literally, it's absolutely nothing," Prescott told Jon Machota of The Athletic. "It's the same ankle, right, that I snapped and had a nasty surgery on four years ago. So, a couple of hard days of training and you get a little sore. And you're going on a fishing trip, and you want to protect it and make sure things don't get worse. People are reaching -- trying to make things that they aren't." Prescott started all 17 games for the Cowboys last year. He finished the year with a 70 percent completion rate, 4,516 passing yards, a league-leading 36 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He was fantasy's QB3 as a result of those totals.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott sheds the boot    Tue Jul 9, 11:21 AM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott (foot) is no longer in a boot and is on track to be ready for training camp, per source on Monday, July 8.

Footballguys view: This report, from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, adds to an already extensive body of information downplaying the issue. Prescott has also been photographed without the boot since the initial photos with the boot circulated. Cowboys training camp is set to begin July 25. The assumption is that the quarterback will be good to go, but we'll continue to monitor.

Cowboys | Two receivers to compete for No. 5 job    Sat Jul 6, 09:57 AM

Dallas Cowboys WRs Jalen Brooks and Ryan Flournoy are expected to battle for the No. 5 wide receiver job during training camp, in the opinion of Jon Machota of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: Brooks was a top receiver in training camp last year for the Cowboys when he was a rookie, and he caught everything thrown to him (six passes) in three games last year. Flournoy, a rookie from South East Missouri State, impressed at the Senior Bowl and is an intriguing player in deep dynasty formats. We'll see how this competition shakes out in camp and the preseason.

Cowboys | No quarterback more on point than Dak Prescott    Sat Jul 6, 03:39 AM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott led the league with an 82.6 on-target percentage in 2023, according to Pro Football Reference.

Footballguys view: Prescott is on target as a passer, and he should continue to thrive this season. The Cowboys will use their passing game to lead the way on offense. That means Prescott could fill the air with footballs - and outperform his current ADP of QB7.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott all good    Fri Jul 5, 10:25 AM

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott (foot) said the walking boot he was spotted in was just for precautionary reasons because the last time he went deep-sea fishing, his ankle swelled up.

Footballguys view: Nothing to see here people in what is being called a 'very minor foot sprain.' Prescott is a tremendous value for Fantasy GMs out there because the Cowboys' offense is going to go through the passing game. With a current ADP that places him near the end of the sixth or seventh round, Prescott could be a value if you wait on a quarterback.

Cowboys | Prescott seen in walking boot, reportedly nursing foot sprain    Thu Jul 4, 03:20 PM

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was seen in a walking boot while on vacation in Cabo San Lucas. Dallas Morning News writer Calvin Watkins reports that a person with knowledge of Prescott's health is nursing a right foot sprain.

Footballguys view: This is no reason to back away from Prescott at a value ADP or worry about the Cowboys offense... yet. If Prescott is missing practices in training camp because of this foot issue, we might have to consider lowering expectations. For now, we will wait for the open of camp to learn more.

Cowboys | Trey Lance not the favorite for QB2?    Thu Jul 4, 10:31 AM

Dallas Cowboys QB Trey Lance will need to show a lot this preseason in order to beat out QB Cooper Rush for the backup spot on the roster, in the opinion of beat writer Clarence Hill Jr.

Footballguys view: While we haven't seen Lance fail spectacularly, items like this don't give us confidence that there is something there the 49ers gave up on too quickly. The Cowboys also don't have Dak Prescott under contract for next year. Some have speculated that Lance (who is also a free agent next year) is a possible succession plan, but this throws cold water on that idea. Lance might not be an essential hold in superflex dynasty at this point.

Cowboys | Sam Williams likely to see bigger role    Sun Jun 30, 03:08 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE Sam Williams is expected to see an increased role in the team's pass rush rotation this season, as a result of DEs Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler signing with the Washington Commanders in free agency, according to David Moore of The Dallas Morning News.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys seem to always have another pass rush prospect in the pipeline. Williams might never be an early down end, but he can provide pass rush punch that can win one-on-one when blocking schemes are more concerned with Micah Parsons. He can also help keep the Cowboys D/ST among the tops in the league, assuming Mike Zimmer can keep them at the same level Dan Quinn helped them get to before leaving to take the Commanders head coach job.

Cowboys | Jalen Tolbert likely to be WR3    Sat Jun 29, 10:56 AM

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys WR Jalen Tolbert is considered the front-runner to be the team's third wide receiver in their starting lineup, alongside WRs CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks.

Footballguys view: 2023 seventh round pick Jalen Brooks is also having a good offseason and should be in the competition for the WR3 job. The Cowboys pass offense could be more potent if Tolbert starts to tap into his potential in place of Michael Gallup, who was released in the offseason after he did not regain his pre-injury form last year.

Cowboys | Trevon Diggs may be ready for camp    Sat Jun 29, 09:06 AM

Dallas Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs (knee) appears to be on track for the start of training camp, according to DallasCowboys.com's Kurt Daniels.

Footballguys view: Diggs tore his ACL last September in practice and had surgery in late October. There was no damage to any other ligaments in his knee, so as long as we see him return to practice in camp and have no setbacks, he should be good for the season opener against the Browns. It will be tempting to play Amari Cooper in DFS for Diggs first game back, and we'll know if Diggs is up for the task of facing Chris Olave in Week 2.

Cowboys | Stephon Gilmore return uncertain    Sat Jun 29, 09:06 AM

Free-agent CB Stephon Gilmore (Cowboys) seems to still be an option for the Dallas Cowboys, but it appears the team is not willing to match his asking price at this point, in the opinion of DallasCowboys.com's Nick Eatman.

Footballguys view: Gilmore was still pretty good and durable last year for the Cowboys as a starter last year, but he probably wants something near the $10.8 million they paid him in 2023. That's a lot for a 34-year-old corner - an age that would make him the oldest starting corner in the league. Gilmore's game is good, but not what it used to be, so teams could be reluctant to spend a lot on a player who could be declining even though cornerback depth is at a premium around league. Gilmore would be a good fit for new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer's defense, so maybe if he finds a soft market going into training camp, he'll end up back with the Cowboys after all.

Cowboys | CeeDee Lamb expected to hold out    Fri Jun 28, 12:22 PM

Updating previous reports, Dallas Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb is expected to hold out from training camp unless a contract extension is reached.

Footballguys view: Whether to keep taking Lamb at #1 or #2 of drafts depends on your faith in the Cowboys to get a deal done before the season, or trust in Lamb to play out his contract and get ready for a showdown if the Cowboys use the franchise tag on him next year. The CBA greatly discourages holdouts financially and should make it so we don't have another Le'Veon Bell situation, but never say never. We don't think you should move Lamb down in your rankings, but obviously we'll be watching this.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott case dismissed    Thu Jun 27, 10:21 AM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott had a sexual assault charge dismissed by a judge Wednesday, June 26, as he was cleared of all civil claims. The charge stems from a 2017 incident when a woman claimed Prescott forced himself on her in an adult nightclub parking lot. Prescott denied the allegations from the beginning; Dallas police dropped their criminal investigation into the matter in May due to a lack of evidence. He filed his own extortion lawsuit against his accuser following a demand of $100 million, which was to be in exchange for the woman not going to police.

Cowboys | CeeDee Lamb could be holdout candidate    Thu Jun 27, 08:19 AM

Dallas Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb has been looking for a contract extension, and he may consider holding out of training camp if he does not receive an extension, in the opinion of SI.com's Albert Breer.

Footballguys view: The right answer is almost always to fade the holdout, so don't move Lamb out of the WR1 and top 2 overall pick spot he has occupied in early drafts. We are highly unlikely to see a Le'Veon Bell situation unfold here. In the meantime, Brandin Cooks has strengthened his connection with Dak Prescott while Lamb missed OTAs. Cooks is available in the 10th round of early best ball drafts, but that could change if Lamb doesn't show up to training camp.

Cowboys | Receivers Jalen Tolbert, Jalen Brooks Impressed In OTAs    Mon Jun 24, 05:28 PM

With CeeDee Lamb skipping the voluntary portions of the offseason program, it opened up more opportunities for young receivers Jalen Tolbert and Jalen Brooks. Both showed flashes of ability.

Footballguys view: According to ESPN.com's Todd Archer, Brooks was able to work through traffic well, especially on tight throws on slants. Tolbert worked all three receiver spots and was able to make plays at all different levels. With Michael Gallup gone and the Cowboys not adding a veteran wideout as of yet, Tolbert or Brooks could be in line for the No. 3 role behind Lamb and Brandin Cooks. Previous reporting has suggested a potential breakout season is coming for Tolbert. Jon Machota of The Athletic told us in May, "In a perfect world for the Dallas Cowboys, Tolbert will make a considerable jump" this season.

Cowboys | Jake Ferguson hopes to continue improving    Sat Jun 15, 12:22 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Jake Ferguson said he hopes to make a similar jump in play this upcoming season like he did from 2022 to 2023. He posted only 174 yards in 2022 but improved to 761 yards last season.

Footballguys view: 2023 second round Luke Schoonmaker is hurt again with a hamstring issue that caused him to miss OTAs. He has also already missed time with shoulder and foot injuries. Ferguson came on with the rest of the Cowboys pass offense in the second half of the season and could be a good value pick at tight end if Schoonmaker continues to struggle with injuries.

Cowboys | Rico Dowdle a strong contender to start?    Tue Jun 11, 03:32 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Rico Dowdle reportedly has a very good chance of being the 'RB1 favorite' this season, according to multiple sources close to the team.

Footballguys view: At 6-foot, 215-pounds, Dowdle has a great blend of size and speed. His well-rounded game makes him a potential do-it-all back in the image of Ezekiel Elliott. But USA Today contends Dowdle's strength and explosiveness add in an element of big-play potential severely lacking from the team's committee of runners. The article acknowledges that Ezekiel Elliott will have a significant role, but it also projects Dowdle for 10-12 attempts per game. It's a situation worth watching when training camp opens.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott First In Line, But Cowboys Will Lean Into Committee Approach    Tue Jun 4, 03:44 PM

Head coach Mike McCarthy has said there will be a running back by committee approach in Dallas this season, but the committee members are still to be determined. McCarthy said he doesn't know yet how many backs will be splitting carries. "Two or three [running backs], whatever it takes," McCarthy said.

Footballguys view: As PFT's Michael David Smith put it, "With last year's leading rusher Tony Pollard now a Titan, the Cowboys are making changes at running back, and McCarthy sounds ready to be patient in setting his running back depth chart this season." At the moment, it looks like the returning Ezekiel Elliott will be atop the depth chart, with Rico Dowdle behind him and Royce Freeman, Deuce Vaughn, Hunter Luepke, Malik Davis, Snoop Conner, and Nathaniel Peat competing for roster spots. Expecting Elliott to take the lead is reasonable. We project him to have 180 carries. That leaves plenty of room for others to chip in.

Cowboys | McCarthy Confirms CeeDee Lamb Is Absent From Mandatory Minicamp    Tue Jun 4, 03:43 PM

Cowboys star WR CeeDee Lamb has not been spotted in Dallas for mandatory minicamp, sources say. Lamb has not been present for voluntary OTAs, but is not reporting to minicamp, which subjects a player to fines. Coach Mike McCarthy confirms CeeDee Lamb is not present but says, "He's been engaged."

Footballguys view: McCarthy adds that it's a "business decision" and has no issues with how his the team's veterans prepare. A first-round pick in 2020, Lamb is entering the final year of his rookie contract on the fifth-year option. He's currently set to make $17.991 million in 2024. After Justin Jefferson reset the receiver market with his contract extension on Monday, Lamb is one of the next in line at the position to receive a new deal.   Cowboys | Talks With CeeDee Lamb Expected To Speed Up    Mon Jun 3, 04:46 PM

Long-time NFL insider Josina Anderson is told talks between the Cowboys and WR CeeDee Lamb are expected to "speed up" --beyond its previous pace -- since "there's at least a number" with the announcement of Vikings WR Justin Jefferson's record-setting non-quarterback contract extension today, per source.

Footballguys view: Lamb is set to make just under $18 million in the final year of his rookie contract, and the wideout is skipping voluntary sessions as the two sides work on a contract extension. Lamb led the NFL with 135 receptions last season, but his target share is further evidence of his importance to this offense: QB Dak Prescott targeted Lamb 179 times last season. Every other Cowboys wide receiver drew a combined 182 targets. Expect this one to get done before September. The Cowboys realize it gets more expensive as other deals get done.

Cowboys | Dallas committed to Dak Prescott    Sun Jun 2, 10:44 AM

Negotiations between the Dallas Cowboys and QB Dak Prescott on a contract extension have been described as 'passive' so far, although the team wants to get a deal done before he hits free agency in 2025, according to ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler.

Footballguys view: If the team is truly committed, then they will get a deal done. There's always enough money, teams just have to figure out the cap situation. Prescott is in the final year of his current deal and will earn $55.455 million in 2024....unless a new deal is made. The team could lower Prescott's cap number this year while also giving him more security. Prescott will continue to be among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league - whether it's in Dallas or somewhere else in 2025.
