Bengals | No injury for Ja'Marr Chase    Fri Jul 26, 01:07 PM

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Bengals WR Ja'Marr Chase's absence from practice Thursday, July 25, was not injury related, according to head coach Zak Taylor. Chase would not say if his absence from practice was related to his contract situation.

Footballguys view: This confirms something we basically already knew. Part of the reason the Bengals didn't sign Tee Higgins to a long term deal is because Chase is also due for a deal and more essential to the team's success. This situation is much farther from escalating than the CeeDee Lamb holdout, but we'll be monitoring in case there are any changes and hoping the Bengals and Chase can figure something out soon. In the meantime, players like 2023 sixth round pick Andrei Iosivas and 2024 third rounder Jermaine Burton will get more reps with Joe Burrow and the ones.

Bengals | Andrei Iosivas primed for major role?    Thu Jul 25, 01:45 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Andrei Iosivas opened training camp in the slot and took every snap there on the first day of practice, according to Jay Morrison of Pro Football Network.

Footballguys view: Iosivas is a player we like in dynasty formats. He's flashed before in his pro career, and now without WR Tyler Boyd, he's in line to do more. He may not catch four touchdowns like he did last year but count on Iosivas to get around 30 targets this season.

Bengals | Ja'Marr Chase extension may have to wait    Tue Jul 23, 01:51 AM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Ja'Marr Chase may not receive a contract extension in the near future because the team wants to keep focused on football, according to team president Mike Brown. Brown said the team is not ruling out a new deal before the season but indicated that the offseason was a better time to negotiate an extension.

Footballguys view: As ESPN.com's Ben Baby noted, the Bengals are no strangers to giving key players significant money. They'll need to do it again for Chase, who has identified Justin Jefferson's contract with the Minnesota Vikings as the blueprint for his future deal. Jefferson, his former LSU teammate, signed a record-breaking extension in June. He signed a four-year contract worth $140 million, including $110 million in guaranteed money. Both totals are the most ever given to a non-quarterback in league history. Eventually, the Bengals will have to come up with something similar to keep Chase happy.

Bengals | Joe Burrow cleared for contact    Mon Jul 22, 12:05 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow (wrist) has been cleared for contact, according to head coach Zac Taylor.

Footballguys view: Burrow missed the last seven games of 2023 after suffering a season-ending wrist injury during the team's Week 11 loss to Baltimore. He was able to participate in Cincinnati's offseason program but did not throw in every OTA practice. His availability for the start of training camp is noteworthy because it hasn't been the norm. An ACL recovery, an appendectomy, and a calf injury kept Burrow from getting in full camps for the last three years. So even if he's eased in this summer as planned, it puts him well ahead of his usual training camp regimens.

Bengals | Deadline passes for Tee Higgins    Tue Jul 16, 12:46 AM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Tee Higgins did not agree to a long-term extension with the Bengals by the deadline Monday, July 15, and will play on his one-year franchise tag tender offer.

Footballguys view: Higgins is scheduled to become a free agent in 2025, and the Bengals will likely let him walk as No. 1 receiver Ja'Marr Chase also is seeking a contract extension. As Profootballtalk.com suggested, Higgins needs a big year after catching only 42 of 77 targets for 656 yards and five touchdowns in 12 games last season as a rib injury and a hamstring issue slowed him.

Bengals | Mike Gesicki in big slot role    Mon Jul 15, 03:28 PM

Cincinnati Bengals TE Mike Gesicki is expected to be used in a 'big slot' role, according to sources Monday, July 15.

Footballguys view: So wrote The Athletic's Paul Dehner Jr. in a piece predicting fantasy breakout players. Dehner added that, most importantly, Gesicki could finally give Burrow a tight end capable of regularly exploiting the intermediate-to-deep middle between Tee Higgins and Ja'Marr Chase. Dehner believes Gesicki going for 700 yards and seven TDs is possible. Gesicki is currently a "free-square" play as TE28 on the Footballguys Average Draft Position rankings.

Bengals | Tee Higgins likely to play on franchise tag    Sun Jul 14, 11:20 AM

The Cincinnati Bengals are not expected to agree to terms with WR Tee Higgins on a long-term contract extension before the franchise tag deadline Monday, July 15.

Footballguys view: Everyone has been expecting this for some time. Higgins signed his franchise tender last month, so he has one more year left with the Bengals then can hit free agency in the spring of 2025. The franchise tag will pay Higgins a fully guaranteed $21.9 million for this season.

Bengals | Joe Burrow noticeably stronger    Tue Jul 9, 02:36 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow (wrist) recently told the 'Pardon My Take' podcast that he has added 10 to 15 pounds this offseason and feels 'a lot stronger' than he did even two years ago.

Footballguys view: Burrow hasn't just packed more muscle on his frame, either. He's talked openly about better knowing when to push through discomfort and other minor things, seemingly in response to the non-contact calf injury last summer before the season-ending wrist injury. His health has been a central talking point, with Burrow being the driver of the conversation. So it's clearly on his mind, and it's fair to believe the increased body mass is part of the plan to avoid similar issues this year.

Bengals | Joe Burrow Eager To Give Us All Something To Talk About    Mon Jul 8, 03:17 PM

In the four years in which Joe Burrow has played professional football, two have concluded with the quarterback on injured reserve. His most recent season ended in such fashion, too, sending Burrow into the shadows of the NFL consciousness after a wrist injury ended his campaign in Week 11. Most might bristle at the idea of being forgotten amid a thrilling season, but not Burrow. He relishes it. "I believe that," Burrow said during an appearance on Pardon My Take when asked if he felt people have forgotten about him. "That's what happens when you get hurt though. You don't play football. People forget about you. That's part of the game. If you're not out there and people aren't watching you, then there's nothing to talk about. So I'm going to give people something to talk about this year. I'm excited about it."

Footballguys view: The Bengals chose him first overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, and Burrow got off to a strong start before a knee injury ended his rookie season. He compiled a remarkable comeback season in 2021, leading the Bengals to Super Bowl LVI, a game they lost to the Rams in heartbreaking fashion. Burrow managed to stay healthy throughout the following season, but a calf injury suffered in training camp in 2023 hampered his start to that campaign. After a rough first month, Burrow and the Bengals appeared ready for takeoff when the wrist injury (and subsequent surgery) ended his season. Now Burrow the Bengals will look to regain that momentum, but until he proves otherwise, health will be a question with Burrow, who opens the season as QB6 on the Footballguys 2024 Draft Rankings.

Bengals | Erick All on track for camp    Thu Jul 4, 02:43 PM

Cincinnati Bengals TE Erick All (knee) is expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: As SBNation.com's Anthony Cosenza recently noted, Cincinnati will undoubtedly exercise patience with All following his 2023 ACL tear. He could become the long-term solution to the team's reliance on veteran one-year rentals at the position. The Bengals have Mike Gesicki, Drew Sample, and Tanner Hudson to lean on in the short term.

Bengals | Chase Brown ready for breakout?    Sun Jun 30, 03:08 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Chase Brown 'could be a massive breakout' player in 2024, according to Chris Roling of Bengals Wire.

Footballguys view: Zack Moss was among the league's leading rushers before Jonathan Taylor returned to the field last year, and the Bengals tabbed him in free agency to play a role in their backfield. Just how big could be up to Brown, who has speed and playmaking ability in the open field, but doesn't have the inside running experience that Moss has. Brown is a good upside running back pick in the second half of your draft, but he might not stay down there if he has a good camp and preseason.

Bengals | Trent Brown facing competition    Sun Jun 30, 09:16 AM

Cincinnati Bengals OT Trent Brown, who signed a one-year, $4.75 million contract with the club this offseason, is a candidate to be cut if the team needs salary cap relief. He has been facing competition from first-round draft pick Amarius Mims for the club's starting right tackle job, although there is a possibility that he could remain on the roster as a swing tackle if Mims is declared the starter.

Footballguys view: Mims had a strong spring and could be ready to start at right tackle even though he only started eight college games. Brown would still be affordable as a swing tackle at under five million, and the Bengals should be willing to invest in line depth with the central importance of Joe Burrow's health. The Bengals gave Brown a two million dollar signing bonus, so the Bengals would have to be hard up for cap relief to release Brown even if he's a backup.

Bengals | Mike Gesicki moves all over    Thu Jun 20, 03:42 PM

Cincinnati Bengals TE Mike Gesicki 'shifted all around the line of scrimmage' during the offseason program, according to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: The Bengals have helped C.J. Uzomah and Hayden Hurst get paid in free agency, and now it could be Gesicki's turn (we'll agree to forget about Irv Smith's blown opportunity last year). Joe Burrow will be looking for a new third option with Tyler Boyd gone in free agency to the Titans, and Gesicki could be it. He's free in early best ball drafts, but based on his play last year in New England, he should be.

Bengals | No extension expected for Tee Higgins    Thu Jun 20, 09:25 AM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Tee Higgins is not expected to sign a contract extension with the Bengals this offseason, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: Higgins doesn't appear to be in the Bengals long term plans, but they are making a push to return to the Super Bowl this year, so they are willing to pay him almost 22 million for his services. Next year, they could tag him for a little over $26 million, but ESPN's Jeremy Fowler has already said that is unlikely to happen. Third round pick Jermaine Burton could take off in dynasty leagues next year and should get opportunities in three wide sets this year, but 2023 sixth round pick Andrei Iosivas could also stake a claim to Higgins outside receiver spot in 2025.

Bengals | Tee Higgins officially signs    Mon Jun 17, 03:37 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Tee Higgins officially signed his franchise tag tender, the team announced Monday, June 17.

Footballguys view: Previous reports indicated Higgins would sign the tender, guaranteeing the wideout $21.8 million this season. While the two sides have until July 15 to reach a long-term deal, that's been characterized as a long shot. Nonethelss, Higgins will report to training camp with teammates next month.

Bengals | Long-Term Deal For Tee Higgins A Longshot    Sun Jun 16, 04:26 PM

Wide receiver Tee Higgins is officially in the fold for the upcoming season. Higgins signed his franchise tag Saturday, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. By signing the tag, the fifth-year wide receiver is now expected to be at training camp. Higgins is set to earn $21.8 million this season under the tag. He and the Bengals can still negotiate a long-term deal until July 15, though the likelihood of that seems unlikely.

Footballguys view: ESPN's Adam Schefter went further, advising his X followers a long-term deal for Higgins "is considered a longshot." Higgins missed the entire offseason program while the tag remained unsigned. Earlier in the week, quarterback Joe Burrow said he remained in contact with Higgins since the end of last season and welcomed the idea of throwing with him before training camp begins in late July. Remember, Higgins isn't the only Bengals wide receiver looking for a massive extension. Ja'Marr Chase, a three-time Pro Bowler, is also angling for a new deal.

Bengals | Dax Hill making strong push to start    Sat Jun 15, 12:22 PM

Cincinnati Bengals DB Daxton Hill is 'well on his way' to being the starting cornerback opposite of Cam Taylor-Britt, according to Chris Roling of BengalsWire.

Footballguys view: The Bengals brought back Vonn Bell and signed Geno Stone away from the Ravens to revamp their safety position so Hill could make this switch. Opposing quarterbacks will likely test Hill a lot in the early weeks of the season. Early season matchups against Kansas City (Week 2) and Washington (Week 3) could present excellent matchups for one of the opposing receivers if Hill has some growing pains in his transition.

Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow (wrist) told reporters on Tuesday, June 11, that while it is 'tough to say' how close to 100% he is right now, he will be 'ready to go by the (start of the) season.'

Footballguys view: Burrow, who underwent surgery after suffering a season-ending injury on Nov. 16, has been a participant since OTAs began in May. According to SI.com, Burrow told reporters today that he understands why he must take it a little easier this offseason. "It's a constant process," Burrow said about his rest days and injury management. Being ready for Week 1 has been the goal all along, so expect more load management throughout the summer.

Bengals | Ja'Marr Chase In Attendance At Mandatory Minicamp    Tue Jun 11, 09:02 AM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Ja'Marr Chase is attending mandatory minicamp Tuesday, June 11.

Footballguys view: Chase has been away from the Bengals all offseason as he awaits a contract extension. Those sessions were voluntary, This week's session is mandatory. Had Chase skipped the workouts, he would be subject to more than $100,000 in fines. As Profootballtalk.com pointed out, some players on the verge of big contracts have been taking those fines as part of the process, but Chase opted to go a different route. It's possible the market-setting, $140 million contract Justin Jefferson signed with the Vikings last week sets the table for the Bengals and Chase to begin progressing in their talks.   Bengals | Joe Burrow Working Every Other Day In OTAs    Tue Jun 4, 04:46 PM

Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was not on the field for Tuesday's practice. But according to head coach Zac Taylor, there's no cause for alarm. Taylor told reporters after the session that Burrow had a scheduled day off as he continues to recover from season-ending wrist surgery. "We've given Joe a day off every week," Taylor said via Paul Dehner Jr. of TheAthletic.com.

Footballguys view: Taylor added that Burrow has not thrown more than two days in a row so far this offseason, and it is designed to keep him from pushing too hard. Burrow is set to practice again on Wednesday. Again, a cautious approach this time of year is the best news for fantasy managers hoping Burrow can remain in the locked and upright position all season long. The No. 1 overall pick of the 2020 draft, Burrow threw for 2,309 yards with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions in 10 games last year before suffering a season-ending wrist injury.

Bengals | No progress on Tee Higgins contract    Sun Jun 2, 01:28 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Tee Higgins has not had negotiations about a potential contract extension for over a year, according to sources Sunday, June 2. Higgins still has not signed his franchise tender.

Footballguys view: Higgins has not signed his tender, but the two sides have until mid-July to get something done. If he doesn't sign his tender by the deadline, then we could see a lengthy holdout. We could also see Higgins dealt to another team. In addition to Higgins, Ja'Marr Chase is looking for a new contract. The Bengals may not be able to keep both with inflated price tags.

Bengals | Cincy, Ja'Marr Chase in holding pattern    Sun Jun 2, 09:24 AM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Ja'Marr Chase is eligible for a contract extension but the team appears to be 'in a holding pattern' because both sides are waiting for Minnesota Vikings WR Justin Jefferson to sign his inevitable extension first, according to ESPN.com's Ben Baby.

Footballguys view: Back in April, the Bengals picked up the fifth-year option for Chase. He's signed through the 2025 season, but the team should be working to get him a new contract this summer - perhaps before the start of the regular season. When Jefferson signs his deal, Chase's deal could be finalized soon after that.

Footballguys view: Higgins still has not signed his franchise tender and is ineligible to report for organized team activities this week and next (June 3-6). Cincinnati's mandatory minicamp is scheduled for June 11-13. Higgins cannot rejoin the team until he signs. Higgins and the Bengals have not come to terms on a long-term deal.   Bengals | Ja'Marr Chase absent    Tue May 28, 11:27 AM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Ja'Marr Chase is not at voluntary organized team activities Tuesday, May 28.

Footballguys view: Chase, eligible for a contract extension for the first time, has been working on his own. He's on the books through 2025, with his fifth-year option picked up. The option puts him in line to collect $21.82 million next year. While the Bengals would like to lock the three-time Pro Bowler up to a long-term deal before then -- it will only get more expensive the longer they wait, local observers have suggested an extension for Chase isn't a priority this year. The Bengals will have a mandatory minicamp from June 11-13 to close out their offseason program. We expect Chase to show up to avoid the fines allowed for missing mandatory work, but we'll continue to watch for more.

Bengals | Trenton Irwin looking to build chemistry    Sun May 26, 01:29 AM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Trenton Irwin said he is focused on building chemistry with QB Joe Burrow. 'One of the biggest things is being on the same page as Joe,' Irwin said. 'If you're on the same page as Joe, Joe can do special things and the team can do special things.'

Footballguys view: Irwin caught a career-high 25 passes last year in 10 games with the Bengals. If healthy, Irwin should push for a similar number this year. He's competing with Jermaine Burton and Andrei Iosivas to establish the no.3 and no.4 spots on the depth chart behind Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.

Bengals | Andrei Iosivas eyeing big role    Sun May 26, 01:29 AM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Andrei Iosivas said he hoping to use this season to prove he is capable of replacing WR Tee Higgins moving forward. 'I'm hoping I can get the confidence from the coaches,' Iosivas said. 'I'm not sure if they can pay Tee. He'll probably get a lot of money. He's a really good receiver. Hopefully I can step into that role.'

Footballguys view: Iosivas showed off his nose for the end zone in 2023 with four receiving touchdowns on only 15 passes caught (in 9 games). His main competition for a larger role is likely rookie WR Jermaine Burton. The Bengals selected the former Alabama WR in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft, and Burton knows how to track deep passes with speed and late hands. We'll see how this competition shakes out in training camp.

'We designed the whole thing to stay within the constraints of where the medical people think he should be and where he wants to be right now,' Pitcher said. 'Nobody is sitting there with a special pitch counter. But we've been smart how we put it together.'

Footballguys view: Unless the two sides agree to a long-term extension by the July 15 deadline, Higgins will make $21.8 million guaranteed playing on the Bengals franchise tag this season. He previously requested a trade but has since acknowledged that won't happen. That leaves sitting out voluntary sessions as his only leverage in negotiations for that extension.

Bengals | Cincinnati inks a pair of draft picks    Tue May 14, 02:31 PM

Cincinnati Bengals third-round draft choice WR Jermaine Burton (Alabama) and fourth-round draft choice TE Erick All (Iowa) signed four-year contracts on Tuesday, May 14. Financial terms of the deals were not immediately disclosed.

Footballguys view: After transferring from Georgia following the 2021 season, Burton was a high-production receiver at Alabama, leading the Crimson Tide in receiving yards and touchdowns last season. With Tyler Boyd no longer in the mix (he signed with Tennessee as a free agent), Cincinnati has an immediate need for a No. 3 receiver. In addition, Tee Higgins is heading into 2024 on the franchise tag, and his future in Cincinnati is uncertain. Given the circumstances, Burton has considerable long-term upside in this offense. Meanwhile, the big question for All is about the ACL injury he suffered in 2023 in his senior year at Iowa. The Bengals, however, feel good about his recovery as he enters a depth chart behind Mike Gesicki, Tanner Hudson, and Drew Sample.

Financial terms of the deals were not immediately disclosed.

Footballguys view: McLachlan is the name to remember here. The Bengals took a very talented Iowa tight end - Erick All - in the fourth round, but he has a lengthy and worrisome injury history. If All can't stay healthy, McLachlan could be Joe Burrow's tight end of the future. McLachlan's 4.61 40 and 35" vertical were both among the top five tight ends at the combine.

Bengals | A Bulkier (By Design) Joe Burrow Making All The Throws    Tue May 7, 04:21 PM

Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has been back in action the past two days following his season-ending wrist surgery six months ago, and the franchise quarterback said all has gone well so far. "I feel great," Burrow said, repeating the phrase several times Tuesday in his first media session since participating in the team's offseason workouts. "It's good to be back."

Footballguys view: Taking the field on Monday, Burrow made all the throws. The reports from Bengals receivers were good, too, indicating that the zip has returned to Burrow's passes. And, so far at least, Burrow said he hasn't had any setbacks or complications, even while experiencing some pain -- although the QB declined to expound on that. One interesting measure Burrow has taken this offseason has been adding bulk. He's suffered several injuries over the years, including a few season-ending ailments, so it can't hurt for Burrow -- who, according to NFL.com, looked bigger to the naked eye -- to add muscle mass as a form of self-preservation. "I'm really strong. Bigger than I was," Burrow confirmed. "We're going to continue to eat right, lift and go through my routine and see where I'm at . . ." The fact he's on schedule in his ability to throw the ball is a great starting point for his return.
