Packers | Jordan Love's deal includes big guarantees Fri Jul 26, 09:24 PM
Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love's contract extension includes a record $75 million signing bonus and $155 million in full gurantees, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love has agreed to a four-year, $220 million extension, making him the highest paid quarterback in NFL history, according to sources.

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson (calf) said there is no timetable for his return but indicated that he is feeling better than he did earlier in the week.

Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa reportedly agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension worth $212.4 million on Friday, July 26.
Footballguys view: It's Tua's turn, and he earned it, with an assist from Tyreek Hill and Mike McDaniel. He is a terrific fit for McDaniel's system and should keep this offense humming. He's still available outside of the top 12 quarterbacks because he doesn't add much as a runner. He'll all be a dicey Week 17 play at Cleveland. |

New Orleans Saints QB Jake Haener (illness) is reportedly dealing with a rare form of skin cancer and is out indefinitely, according to ESPN.com's Katherine Terrell. According to Haener, the skin cancer is not life-threatening but more of a matter of how long he can wait before he needs to address it.
Link to storyPittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson (calf) was held out of practice again on Friday, July 26, but head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters afterward that Wilson did not practice so he could 'keep a minor thing from becoming major.'
Footballguys view: Justin Fields has been inconsistent in Wilson's place, so the door to Fields overtaking him isn't exactly open. Fields and Wilson are both mere late round picks with the strong possibility that the Steelers have a hyperconservative pass offense and use both quarterbacks over the course of the game. |

Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson (illness) did not participate in practice on Friday, July 26, due to illness. Jackson missed the first three training camp practices due to an illness and left practice early upon returning to work on Wednesday.
Footballguys view: This has now risen to the "probably nothing, but should be monitored" level. Josh Johnson is the backup in Baltimore and will be getting extra work with the first team while Jackson and the Ravens get this figured out. Stay tuned. |

Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa was a full practice participant on Friday, July 26.

Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson will not have any limitations on his running this season because it is one of the strengths of his game, according to head coach Shane Steichen.
Footballguys view: This could be the best thing for Richardson's value, or the worst. But if you are taking Richardson at ADP in a redraft league, it's what you want to hear, because his rushing upside along with Steichen's offensive wizardry is what gives the 2023 #4 overall pick #1 overall fantasy quarterback upside. This is also a confirmation that Steichen is aggressive as an offense designer and game planner, which we always prefer in fantasy football. |
Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix worked with the first-team offense during practice Thursday, July 25.
Footballguys view: Nix only has to beat out Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson to start Week 1 at Seattle. Unlike JJ McCarthy and Drake Maye, the veteran bridge quarterback options for the Broncos won't be compelling enough to keep Nix off of the field unless he faceplants in the preseason. |
Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins said he wants to play during the preseason but that head coach Raheem Morris does not plan on playing him during those games.
Footballguys view: Cousins knows the Zac Robinson well after he played under fellow Sean McVay disciple Kevin O'Connell in Minnesota and he avoided the PUP list to open camp after an achilles tear ended his 2023. We don't need to see him in the preseason. It will be exciting to watch #8 overall Michael Penix Jr. play with the first team in his place. |

Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson (shoulder) participated in 11-on-11 drills for the first time since last season on Friday, July 26.

Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson (shoulder) may not play in any of the preseason games, according to head coach Kevin Stefanski, but Stefanski said Watson will participate in team drills during training camp.

New York Jets QB Jordan Travis (leg) needs more time to recover from the serious leg injury he suffered during his college career, according to head coach Robert Saleh. He is currently on the Active/Non-Football Injury list.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott is entering the final year of his contract, but team owner Jerry Jones emphasized to reporters on Thursday, July 25, that he does not believe 2024 will be Prescott's final season with the team.
Footballguys view: What Jones wants, Jones usually gets. The team has prioritized WR CeeDee Lamb when it comes to contract extensions but Prescott is not far behind. The entire offense will flow through the passing game, and that means Prescott could be a value for Fantasy GMs this season. |

Detroit Lions QB Hendon Hooker 'looked sharp' as the No. 2 quarterback during practice Wednesday, July 24, according to Jeff Seidel of the Detroit Free Press.
Footballguys view: According to Seidel, Hooker tossed some nice, crisp sideline passes to Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jalon Calhoun, and Kalif Raymond and was quick and steady in the pocket. Seidel went on to advise us to expect Hooker and Nate Sudfeld to alternate as the No. 2 as camp progresses. We'll monitor the competition in the coming weeks. |
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson (calf) is considered day-to-day with a calf injury, according to sources Thursday, July 25.
Footballguys view: Wilson is a seasoned veteran, so he doesn't need every rep in training camp. Even though he's seen as the starter, Wilson needs to get healthy, stay healthy, and play better than he did over the last two years with the Broncos. In Wilson's absence, Justin Fields took first-team reps at quarterback. |

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins (Achilles) was medically cleared to practice, according to sources Thursday, July 25.
Footballguys view: The Falcons will be diligent with his workload, but Cousins is still expected to receive all first-team reps. We'll see how much first-round QB Michael Penix gets in the preseason as Cousins doesn't need a ton of reps in the exhibition portion of the summer. |

Undrafted free-agent QB Ben Bryant (Northwestern) was signed to an undisclosed deal by the New York Jets Thursday, July 25.
Link to storyUpdating an earlier report, Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson (illness) departed practice midway through on Wednesday, July 24, as he continued to deal with symptoms relating to an illness that kept him out of the first three days of practice. The Ravens have a day off on Thursday, July 25.

Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa may not participate in 11-on-11 drills during practice while he is waiting for a contract extension, according to head coach Mike McDaniel.
Footballguys view: The Dolphins are set to make Tagovailoa a highly-paid quarterback. Until that happens, it's wise to limit his participation and minimize the risk of injury. ESPN's Adam Schefter said the Dolphins "want to pay" Tagovailoa, but at a "fair market value." |

Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson returned to practice on Wednesday, July 24, after missing three days due to an unspecified illness.
Footballguys view: Jackson is back out there just like we expected. Fantasy GMs are once again are excited for Jackson to be one of the top quarterbacks this season. We have Jackson ranked as the no.3 fantasy quarterback in 2024. |
Lamar Jackson player page
Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson (shoulder) is not expected to see any limitations at the start of camp and will likely play in the preseason, general manager Chris Ballard said on Wednesday, July 24.
Footballguys view: Great news for the Colts here. Richardson has fantastic ability as a runner, and he could finish as a top-5 fantasy quarterback if he stays healthy. The problem is the playing style Richardson has. He runs with little regard for his personal safety and tends to take a beating because of it. |
Las Vegas Raiders QB Aidan O'Connell and QB Gardner Minshew will be competing for the starting quarterback job during training camp, and head coach Antonio Pierce said there is no frontrunner for the job, according to ESPN.com's Paul Gutierrez. Pierce said he is not in a hurry to name a starter at this point.
Footballguys view: Minshew is there as the seasoned veteran, and he can start if O'Connell fails to win the job. However, if the competition is close it makes more sense for the Raiders to roll with the young guy. O'Connell enters his second pro season after flashing a bit during his rookie season in 2023. |

Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love is likely to receive more than $50 million per season on his extension, in the opinion of ESPN's Rob Demovsky.
Footballguys view: Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said at a press conference that Love's representatives told him that the quarterback will sit out until a deal is in place. Still, Gutekunst said he is "optimistic" that Love's absence from practice will be brief because an agreement could come together soon. Meanwhile, Love's late-season rise last year was impressive by NFL and fantasy standards. Over the final eight weeks of 2023, Love scored a quarterback-leading 153 fantasy points. That was good for a 21.9 per-game average, third best behind only Lamar Jackson's 24.4 and Josh Allen's 24.6. He's currently being drafted as QB10, according to Footballguys Average Draft position data. |

New England Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett is the 'most pro-ready guy we have,' according to head coach Jerod Mayo.
Footballguys view: The Patriots drafted Drake Maye at No. 3 overall in April's NFL Draft, but it's not a huge surprise to see Brissett, who was signed before the draft, ahead of the newcomer. That said, the door is not closed on Maye potentially usurping Brissett as QB1 over the next month. "Look, and this goes to any position. If [Maye] comes out here and lights it up -- and once again, it goes back to the quality of reps -- it could absolutely happen," Mayo said. Given that stance, Profootballtalk.com believes Maye's progression will be a consistent storyline throughout camp -- if not his entire rookie season. |

Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Darnold will receive a majority of the snaps with the first-team offense when training camp practices start, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell. O'Connell said QB J.J. McCarthy will also receive work with the starting offense.
Footballguys view: While Darnold will get the bulk of the work, McCarthy will also get first-team snaps, and O'Connell said he wants a "really competitive situation." Still, the nature of the split will mean that Darnold will be on the inside track to start against the Giants in Week 1. PFT's Josh Alper points out the Vikings have their bye after a Week 5 matchup with the Jets in London, and any season-opening decision at quarterback could be revisited at that point because of the extra time a new quarterback would have to prepare. |

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Zack Annexstad (undisclosed) and TE Tanner Taula (undisclosed) were placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury list Monday, July 22.
Link to storyCincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow (wrist) has been cleared for contact, according to head coach Zac Taylor.
Footballguys view: Burrow missed the last seven games of 2023 after suffering a season-ending wrist injury during the team's Week 11 loss to Baltimore. He was able to participate in Cincinnati's offseason program but did not throw in every OTA practice. His availability for the start of training camp is noteworthy because it hasn't been the norm. An ACL recovery, an appendectomy, and a calf injury kept Burrow from getting in full camps for the last three years. So even if he's eased in this summer as planned, it puts him well ahead of his usual training camp regimens. |

Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love will not practice until he reaches a contract extension. General manager Brian Gutekunst says a deal could be close.
Footballguys view: "I think so, but, again, you never know," Gutekunst said, explaining how much work needs to be done. "We're working really hard to get that done." Gutekunst also said he thinks it is important for Love to be on the field as much as possible, suggesting there will be a push to get a deal done. In his first year as a starter, Love completed 64.2 percent of his throws for 4,159 yards with 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also rushed for 247 yards with four TDs. Love is carrying a QB10 Average Draft Position into the summer, making him a weekly starter in 12-team leagues. |

Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson (illness) was sent home from practice due to an illness, the team announced Sunday, July 21.
Footballguys view: This doesn't sound like a big deal. It shouldn't be long before we see Jackson back out there in training camp. We have Jackson ranked as the no.4 fantasy quarterback this year, and Fantasy GMs are expecting him to continue making strides as a passer while maintaining his elite rushing ability. |

The Dallas Cowboys are expected to prioritize negotiations with WR CeeDee Lamb on a contract extension over talks with QB Dak Prescott on a long-term deal because of Lamb's intentions to hold out from training camp. Prescott is expected to participate in the team's first practice session Thursday, July 25.
Footballguys view: It's an interesting move given that the NFL is a quarterback-desperate league. Lamb is a superstar, and he could lead the NFL in receiving this season. However, the Cowboys offense is going to flow through the passing game in 2024. That means a lot of Prescott (and Lamb) will be the plan. In the end, the Cowboys need to find a way to secure both of their services going forward. |

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy is a longshot to be the starter at the beginning of the season, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN on Sunday, July 21. 'He is not the starter as of now, Sam Darnold is considered the heavy favorite. My sense is McCarthy would have to be absolutely all-world in the next six weeks to win this job,' Fowler said.
Footballguys view: No surprise here. McCarthy is a rookie quarterback we are excited about for multiple reasons. He's a strong leader who plays with a calm mind under pressure (to start with). However, he's going to take some time to get up to speed in the NFL. The Vikings can begin the season with Darnold as their starter, but eventually, we'll see McCarthy atop the depth chart. |
Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams could see 45 to 65 snaps during the preseason, but the team has not decided on a final plan for his preseason play, according to head coach Matt Eberflus.
Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Williams is a supremely gifted rookie quarterback, and he may be the best passer to come into the NFL since Andrew Luck. The Bears have a fine group of receiving weapons around him, so it would be good to see Williams in the preseason. Here's hoping he's the franchise quarterback the Bears have been longing for. |
Free-agent WRs Rory Starkey and Jalen Wayne signed undisclosed contracts with the Green Bay Packers on Friday, July 19. The Packers also waived WR Alex McGough (undisclosed) with an injury designation.
Link to storyFree-agent QB Jake Fromm (Commanders) worked out for the Green Bay Packers on Friday, July 19.
Footballguys view: The Packers have Jordan Love as their starter, but they have only Sean Clifford and rookie Michael Pratt behind him. Fromm could be a camp arm for the team, or he could push to make a spot on the practice squad with the inexperience in the quarterback room. |
Jake Fromm player page
Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy signed his four-year rookie contract, according to sources Friday, July 19. The deal is worth $21.85 fully guaranteed and includes a $12.71 million signing bonus and a fifth-year team option.
Footballguys view: We love McCarthy's landing spot. He's a calm quarterback and a natural leader. Pressure doesn't rattle him, and he'll run the offense true to design. Sam Darnold is there to be the starter while McCarthy gets up to speed in the NFL game. We'll see how quickly McCarthy can take over the job. |
New York Jets FB Nick Bawden (undisclosed) and DT Leonard Taylor III (undisclosed) were placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Thursday, July 18. The team also placed QB Jordan Travis (knee) and WR Tyler Harrell (undisclosed) on the Active/Non-Football Injury list.

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith is entering a 'make-or-break' season, in the opinion of The Athletic's Michael-Shawn Dugar, who notes Smith has a cap hit of $38.5 million in 2025 and will need to prove to the new coaching staff that he's worth having his contract reworked.
Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Smith has been good for Seattle, and it's great to see his career resurgence. However, this league is called 'not for long' for a reason and the team may want to see what someone else can do in that spot if Smith's play levels off. Sam Howell is there to push for the starting job this year, and he's on the books through the 2025 season (with a $1.1 million cap hit next year). |

Green Bay Packers OT Donovan Jennings (undisclosed), TE Tucker Kraft (undisclosed), WR Alex McGough (undisclosed) and OT Zach Tom (undisclosed) were placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, July 17. The team also placed S Kitan Oladapo (undisclosed) on the Active/Non-Football Injury list.
Link to storyUpdating previous reports, Chicago Bears first-round draft choice QB Caleb Williams officially signed his four-year contract with the Bears Wednesday, July 17.
Link to storyUpdating a previous report, Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams has not officially signed his rookie contract yet, per source on Wednesday, July 17.
Footballguys view: Williams' reps asked Chicago to agree to not use the franchise tag on him down the road, but the team declined. The two sides are close to finalizing the deal as they go over the final language. |
New York Giants QB Daniel Jones (knee) is not expected to be placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list when training camp begins.
Footballguys view: Good news for Jones here. He's said in a recent interview that he has had a "pretty smooth process" with "no real setbacks" returning from a torn ACL. If he's healthy, Jones is in line to start for the Giants. We'll see if Drew Lock can do anything to change the team's mind before the start of the regular season. We'll also see just how healthy Jones is returning from his knee injury. |
