Colts | Anthony Richardson will continue running Fri Jul 26, 01:07 PM
Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson will not have any limitations on his running this season because it is one of the strengths of his game, according to head coach Shane Steichen.
Footballguys view: This could be the best thing for Richardson's value, or the worst. But if you are taking Richardson at ADP in a redraft league, it's what you want to hear, because his rushing upside along with Steichen's offensive wizardry is what gives the 2023 #4 overall pick #1 overall fantasy quarterback upside. This is also a confirmation that Steichen is aggressive as an offense designer and game planner, which we always prefer in fantasy football. |
Updating a previous report, Indianapolis Colts DT Raekwon Davis (illness) was placed on the Active/Non-Illness list because of high blood pressure.

Indianapolis Colts WR Xavier White was released on Thursday, July 25.

Indianapolis Colts CB Julius Brents (ankle) underwent ankle surgery during the offseason and may be a limited participant during the early part of training camp, according to general manager Chris Ballard.
Link to storyIndianapolis Colts CB Chris Lammons (ankle) was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, July 24, and is expected to miss the first week or two of training camp. The team also placed DT Raekwon Davis (undisclosed) on the Active/Non-Football Injury list.

Indianapolis Colts OT Braden Smith (knee) should be on the field for the start of training camp practices, according to general manager Chris Ballard.

Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson (shoulder) is not expected to see any limitations at the start of camp and will likely play in the preseason, general manager Chris Ballard said on Wednesday, July 24.
Footballguys view: Great news for the Colts here. Richardson has fantastic ability as a runner, and he could finish as a top-5 fantasy quarterback if he stays healthy. The problem is the playing style Richardson has. He runs with little regard for his personal safety and tends to take a beating because of it. |
According to The Athletic's James Boyd, working alongside a healthy Anthony Richardson, Josh Downs could be in for a more productive sophomore season, evidenced by the numerous times Richardson connected with his top slot receiver during spring practices.
Footballguys view: Boyd suggested it feels like Downs has flown under the radar this summer. That's understandable. The Colts signed Michael Pittman Jr. to a $70 million extension and drafted Adonai Mitchell in the second round this offseason. Both players could be in for big campaigns, but Boyd argues Downs shouldn't be overlooked. Last year, Downs quickly emerged as Indianapolis' second option through the air, and he recorded a rookie franchise-record 68 catches for 771 yards and two touchdowns. |
Indianapolis Colts WR Ashton Dulin's (knee) status for training camp remains uncertain, but he was seen running and cutting in a video posted to his Instagram account.
Footballguys view: Dulin suffered the ACL injury last August, ending his 2023 season before it could get going. With the additions of Adonai Mitchell and Anthony Gould in the draft, the Colts' receiver room has gotten a bit crowded. However, as USA Today's Paul Bretl suggests, with Dulin's ability to contribute on special teams and the stability he can provide on offense if the Colts are in a pinch, he has a path to carving out a roster spot as the team's sixth wideout. |

After the Colts selected receiver Adonai Mitchell in the second round and then watched him have an immediate impact in spring practices, Alec Pierce is likely to be directly impacted by the addition. Pierce has operated as the No. 3 wide receiver in his first two seasons, but that is expected to be the role up for grabs between Pierce and Mitchell come training camp. "I think it's my job to go into camp and prove that," Pierce said. "Just gotta let my work on the field speak for itself."
Footballguys view: The Colts have typically relegated Pierce to the role of an outside receiver running deeper routes. Why Pierce hasn't been asked to run a more diverse set of routes is unclear. "I think there's a lot more to my game," Pierce said. "I just want to have the chance to showcase that." To that end, Pierce isn't shying away from the competition. He's even added a few pounds of muscle at the suggestion of WR coach Reggie Wayne and the team's front office, the goal being to allow him to play with a bit more power. But the job won't be handed to him, so the camp battle between Pierce and Mitchell will be worth watching. |
Indianapolis Colts DE Kwity Paye is aiming for '12 to 15 sacks this year,' he told The Draft Network's Justin Melo on Wednesday, June 26.
Footballguys view: The Colts also took the #1 edge rusher in the draft, Laiatu Latu, with the #15 pick as the first defensive player off of the board. The Colts D/ST was already a fantasy factor last year. If Anthony Richardson can stay healthy, they could be an elite fantasy defense playing with more winning game scripts. Paye could also be a breakout IDP edge defender with help from Latu giving teams more to think about at the other end of the line. |

Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson (shoulder) will be a 'full-go' at the start of training camp next month, according to general manager Chris Ballard.'He'll be full-go. He was full-go all the way up until the last day of OTAs, and we had two heavy throwing sessions the two days before, and so we backed off a little on the last day,' Ballard said.
Footballguys view: Richardson had been a full participant throughout OTAs and during the two days of minicamp practices before sitting out the third day. Richardson said at the time there was "nothing to worry about" and that he was told during the rehab process that this could be expected as he continues to work his way back to full capacity. As USA Today's Paul Bretl suggested, if needed, further proof that Richardson's shoulder is in good shape is that he and the wide receiver unit will be getting together during this time off for a "second minicamp," as Richardson put it, and the opportunity to get into a groove heading into training camp, which begins July 24th. |
With no clear replacement for Zack Moss after his departure in free agency, it remains to be seen who will ascend to the No. 2 RB spot behind Jonathan Taylor. For now, the likeliest option appears to be Try Sermon, whose hard-running style has earned him first crack at the job.
Footballguys view: ESPN.com's Stephen Holder notes that Sermon is on his third team in four seasons, but this is the closest he has come to establishing some consistency in his career. He averaged 4.6 yards per attempt last season, but fellow backups Evan Hull and Tyler Goodson will certainly be factors in this competition -- although Goodson is reportedly viewed as more of a receiving/third-down option. Taylor drafters interested in insuring their investment will want to monitor this one. |

Indianapolis Colts WR Adonai Mitchell 'gets open a lot,' according to QB Anthony Richardson.
Footballguys view: Mitchell might be going a little too high in redraft and best ball because this is a crowded and low volume passing game, but having him as a complementary target will give Anthony Richardson more value as a passer and raise the ceiling of this offense as a whole. GM Chris Ballard came out combatively against negative character buzz around Mitchell after the draft in a good sign for the organization's belief in the mercurial prospect. |
Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson said he plans to work out with some of the wide receivers on the roster before the start of training camp.
Link to storyIndianapolis Colts RB Evan Hull (knee) has been cleared for football activities, and revealed that his knee injury included a torn left medial collateral ligament in addition to a torn meniscus.
Footballguys view: With Jonathan Taylor absent during recent OTA sessions (due to personal issues), Trey Sermon was the next man up. In terms of the passing-down back, observers at those sessions reported that Hull appeared to get the initial looks ahead of Tyler Goodson. When he's on the field, Taylor will handle a featured role, but there could be room for a receiving option here. It's a situation worth watching in deeper leagues. |
Updating a previous report, Indianapolis Colts WR Alec Pierce (foot) did not participate in practices this week because his foot was stepped on last week.
Footballguys view: It's an injury that comes with some pain, but so long as it's not serious we could see Pierce back out there soon. With the addition of Adonai Mitchell, Pierce is likely bumped to no.4 on the Colts' depth chart. |
Updating a previous report, Indianapolis Colts second-round draft choice WR Adonai Mitchell (Texas) signed a four-year contract worth $7.386 million - including a $2.191 million signing bonus - on Thursday, June 6.
Link to storyUndrafted free-agent CB Clay Fields III (Chattanooga) and WR Derek Slywka (Ithaca) signed undisclosed contracts with the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday, June 6. S Daniel Scott (Achilles) was also placed on the Reserve/Injured list.

Link to storyIndianapolis Colts C Jack Anderson was released Thursday, June 6.
Link to storyIndianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson (shoulder) rested on the final day of minicamp practice Thursday, June 6, due to shoulder soreness.
Footballguys view: This is something the Colts will be monitoring closely. Richardson is fantastic, and he can not only be a franchise quarterback but he also can be the best quarterback in fantasy football...if he stays healthy. Last year was exciting for Richardson as a rookie, but he was banged up in every game. After just four games in 2023, Richardson was lost for the season. If healthy, Richardson can be a superstar for Fantasy GMs. |
Indianapolis Colts second-round draft choice WR Adonai Mitchell signed a four-year contract with the Colts Tuesday, June 4, worth $7.386 million.
Footballguys view: Mitchell has a great size/speed combination, and he could have easily been a first-round pick in this talented WR class. The Colts get value with Mitchell in the second round, and he could develop into a Pro Bowl-caliber receiver. This year, Mitchell looks to be no.3 on the depth chart behind Michael Pittman and Josh Downs. Mitchell can fly down the field, but he needs to be better as a route runner to play up to his potential in the pros. |
Indianapolis Colts CB Chris Lammons (foot) did not participate in practice Tuesday, June 4, and is wearing a walking foot on his foot and ankle.

Indianapolis Colts TE Mo Alie-Cox (undisclosed) participated in practice Tuesday, June 4, after missing some time last week because of an injury.

Indianapolis Colts WR Alec Pierce (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Tuesday, June 4.
Link to storyIndianapolis Colts WR Michael Pittman Jr. (knee) will not participate in any of the practices this week because of a knee injury. Head coach Shane Steichen said Pittman is being held out as a precaution.
Link to storyIndianapolis Colts S Daniel Scott (Achilles) suffered a torn Achilles during organized team activities last week and is expected to miss the 2024 season. Scott's rookie campaign was also lost due to injury after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament last June.
Link to storyAppearing on Pat McAfee Show, Colts QB Anthony Richardson, asked about his surgically-repaired throwing shoulder, told listeners: "I'm at about 95 percent right now, and it took me about four months to start throwing again."
Footballguys view: Richardson, who's had minimal restrictions during the offseason workout program, is progressing nicely. Even though he started just four games before sustaining the season-ending shoulder injury in Week 5, the Colts and fantasy managers came away from 2023 enthusiastic about the young quarterback's potential. Richardson showed ample upside during his four-game run as a rookie. He scored 17-plus points in his first three games, including a 29.6-point performance in Week 3. His 22.1 point-per-game average through Week 4 ranked fourth among all fantasy QBs. Richardson is QB4 on our 2024 rankings; draft accordingly. |
Indianapolis Colts RB Trey Sermon is 'quite clear' the backup running back to Jonathan Taylor, according to sources Saturday, June 1.
Footballguys view: Sermon has natural talent as a runner, but he has yet to play up to his potential in the pros. He doesn't bring much as a receiver out of the backfield, but Sermon can be a reliable two-down back if needed. |
Jonathan Taylor player page
Trey Sermon player page
Indianapolis Colts TE Jelani Woods (hamstring) told reporters Thursday, May 31, that he feels 'more explosive' coming off a hamstring injury that claimed his entire 2023 season.
Footballguys view: Woods has some explosion to his game when healthy, and he creates mismatches with linebackers because of it. Defenses have plenty to worry about with the receivers in the Colts' passing game, so Woods has an opportunity to take advantage of coverage. That may not lead to much fantasy success, but the developmental talent is there. Like many tight ends, Woods may just need more time and experience. |

Indianapolis Colts WR Michael Pittman Jr. (knee) remained out of practice on Thursday, May 30. Pittman was injured on May 22 when he bumped knees with another player during a voluntary workout.
Link to storyIndianapolis Colts WR Alec Pierce will battle rookie WR Adonai Mitchell for the No. 3 receiver role during training camp. The winner would be set to start opposite WR Michael Pittman Jr. while WR Josh Downs, who has emerged as the No. 2 target behind Pittman, works from the slot.
Footballguys view: The Colts wide receiver group also added the speedy Anthony Gould in the fifth round, so this wide receiver group is young and dangerous in the downfield passing game. Anthony Richardson should be able to use his arm strength and talent often on vertical passes. |
Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson (shoulder) isn't expected to change his playing style after suffering a season-ending injury in 2023. 'Changing my game and my play style? I don't feel like there's anything wrong with my play style,' Richardson said at OTAs on Wednesday, May 22.
Footballguys view: Perhaps Richardson should reconsider this. There's nothing wrong with his play style - except he gets banged up because of it. Playing to avoid contact should be a priority for Richardson so he can get through the season. Last year, Richardson flashed as a rookie but he was banged up in every game he played. Then, Richardson was knocked out for the year in Week 4. |
Indianapolis Colts CB Dallis Flowers (Achilles) participated in the voluntary workout Wednesday, May 22.

Updating a previous report, Indianapolis Colts WR Michael Pittman Jr. (knee) bumped knees with another player during the voluntary workout Wednesday, May 22, but head coach Shane Steichen said Pittman should be fine.
Footballguys view: We won't worry about this unless Pittman is limited with a knee issue during the rest of OTAs and the absence extends into camp. If he does miss any practice time, it could give second round pick Adonai Mitchell a bigger opportunity to impress with the first team. |
Indianapolis Colts WR Michael Pittman Jr. (knee) suffered an apparent left knee injury during organized team activities on Wednesday, May 22. Pittman Jr. was able to limp off the field.
Footballguys view: Michael Pittman 'should be fine' according to HC Shane Steichen. We'll likely see Pittman limited as the offseason continues. Stay tuned. |
Indianapolis Colts WR Josh Downs had at least four receptions and at least six targets in six of his first eight games, but after suffering a knee injury in Week 9, he had three or fewer receptions in six of his final eight games and had three targets or less five times in that span.
Footballguys view: Downs can be a playmaker when he's healthy. The Colts added Adonai Mitchell in the second round of the 2024 NFL draft, so Downs could see a split amongst targets that don't go to Michael Pittman. We like Downs as a WR5 with upside in fantasy leagues. |
Updating a previous report, Indianapolis Colts OT Braden Smith (knee) said he is taking things day-by-day in terms of his recovery from offseason surgery and has not said when he expects to return to the practice field.
