Bears | Roquan Smith requests trade    Tue Aug 9, 09:47 AM

Chicago Bears LB Roquan Smith requested a trade Tuesday, Aug. 9. The Bears offended Smith with a backloaded offer, which wouldn't make him the highest paid in actual salary, included proposed de-escalators that no player out of the 94 non-QB, $15-plus million players have.

Footballguys view: Smith is under his fifth-year option, which would put him on the books for $9.7 million in 2022. A first-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Smith is one of the best in the game at his position and he wants to be valued as such. The Bears may have to trade him away before the start of the regular season if they don't want to pay up. Stay tuned.

Falcons | Deion Jones making progress    Wed Aug 3, 11:57 AM

Atlanta Falcons LB Deion Jones (shoulder) is 'trending in the right direction' while rehabbing from an offseason shoulder procedure, head coach Arthur Smith said on Wednesday, Aug. 3. Smith declined to give a timetable for Jones' return to practice, though.

Footballguys view: The Falcons are trying to trade Jones if anyone will take on his 9.6 million dollar salary. The team is likely to move on from Jones no later than next year and they drafted Troy Andersen in the second round and signed Rashaan Evans and Nick Kwiatkowski, so it's possible that Jones isn't even a starter this year. They seem to be content to keep him if they can't find a trade because the cap savings will be minimal and there aren't signs that he'll be a distraction if he's still on the team.

Carolina Panthers LB Shaq Thompson (knee) will start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list after having a clean-up procedure on his knee this offseason, head coach Matt Rhule said on Monday, July 25. Thompson is expected to miss a couple of weeks.

Footballguys view: It doesn't sound like this is a major issue, but don't assume Thompson will be ready Week 1 until we see him activated. Reclamation project Cory Littleton and fourth-round pick Brandon Smith are among the players who could see time in Thompson's spot while he heals.

Bengals | Samaje Perine placed on PUP list    Sat Jul 23, 04:31 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Samaje Perine (undisclosed) was among the players placed on the PUP list, the team announced Saturday, July 23. Additionally, LB Joe Bachie, G Alex Cappa, DE Khalid Kareem, and S Brandon Wilson were placed on the PUP list with undisclosed injuries.

Footballguys view: 2021 sixth-round pick Chris Evans had a good offseason and could threaten Perine's role as a passing down back. If Perine isn't healthy, Evans could even be the injury upside backup play behind Joe Mixon. Cappa is an important player for the Bengals offensive line overhaul, so we'll also be monitoring his status.

The Tennessee Titans placed LB Monty Rice, TE Tommy Hudson, and PK Caleb Shudak on the PUP list Saturday, July 23, with undisclosed injuries.

Footballguys view: Rice, a third-round pick last year, is currently situated as the top backup inside linebacker behind 2021 in-season addition Zach Cunningham, who had his deal reworked in the offseason to keep him with the team through 2024. He's coming back from an achilles issue.

Patriots | New England places four on PUP list    Thu Jul 21, 05:39 PM

New England Patriots C David Andrews (undisclosed), CB Jonathan Jones (undisclosed), LB Raekwon McMillan (undisclosed) and S Jabrill Peppers (undisclosed) were placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Thursday, July 21.

Footballguys view: Peppers is coming back from an ACL tear, but expected to play a role in his first season with the Patriots. Jones is a very important player for the team after they let shutdown corner J.C. Jackson walk in free agency, he's recovering from October shoulder surgery. Andrews is a stalwart starter on the line, he's recovering from January shoulder surgery. We'll be watching to see if their return to play timeline progresses as expected.

Falcons | PUP list for Deion Jones    Thu Jul 21, 05:15 PM

Atlanta Falcons LB Deion Jones (shoulder) was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Thursday, July 21.

Footballguys view: Jones probably won't be with the Falcons next year. If they can find a taker in a trade, it would save the team 15 million in cap room, but that will be difficult as long as his shoulder is keeping him on the PUP list. Free agent pickup Rashaan Evans, second-round pick Troy Andersen and 2020 fourth rounder Mykal Walker are vying for the spot next to Jones at inside linebacker in Dean Pees defense.

Rams | Bobby Wagner expecting big year    Sat Jul 16, 10:17 PM

Los Angeles Rams LB Bobby Wagner said he expects to thrive in his first year in the Los Angeles defense. 'I think that I'm in a better position to make plays and I think I'm going to have more opportunities to do some of the things that I was doing early on in my career,' Wagner said.

Footballguys view: The Seahawks had to let Wagner go after he put together as good a career as any Seahawks linebacker in the history of the franchise, if not better. The five-year, $50 million contract he signed in Los Angeles was reasonable for a player who hasn't declined significantly. He fills a spot that has long been an issue in the otherwise stacked Rams defense.

Falcons | Deion Jones on the bubble?    Mon Jul 11, 09:33 AM

Atlanta Falcons LB Deion Jones' place on the team is up in the air as training camp beckons. He would have a $19 million dead cap hit if released, but the team is already dealing with $63 million in dead cap space.

Footballguys view: The Falcons certainly don't want add more dead cap and would prefer to trade Jones, but he's not in their future plans. Second-round pick Troy Andersen and 2020 fourth rounder Mykal Walker are the players on the rise at off ball linebacker, with free agent pickup and former Tennessee first-round pick Rashaan Evans looking to redeem his value. Jones will probably be a Falcon this year because of a lack of trade value, but a release isn't totally out of the question if they like the progress of Andersen in his first camp.

Free-agent RB David Johnson (Texans) and LB Joe Schobert (Steelers) are participating in the New Orleans Saints minicamp this week on a tryout basis.

Footballguys view: Johnson is no longer the same player he used to be, especially as a runner, but he can provide value as a receiver out of the backfield. The Saints are trying to establish a depth chart behind their top two backs; Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram.

Saints | Joe Schobert meeting with New Orleans    Fri Jun 10, 02:34 PM

Free-agent LB Joe Schobert (Steelers) is visiting with the New Orleans Saints on Friday, June 10.

Footballguys view: Schobert was a late summer addition for the Steelers, but the team decided to sign his former teammate Myles Jack this offseason instead of sticking with him next to Devin Bush. He'll help a lot more in coverage than against the run and could help with the Saints inexperience at linebacker after Demario Davis.
