Browns | Jordan Hicks retires    Fri Jul 25, 10:09 AM

Cleveland Browns LB Jordan Hicks announced his retirement Friday, July 25. Hicks compiled 951 tackles over 10 seasons.

Footballguys view: The Browns still have a viable duo in the middle of their defense with free agent signing Jerome Baker and second round pick Carson Schwesinger, but they may look to the free agent pool to add depth to the group after Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah was already put on the PUP list earlier in the offseason, making him unavailable this year.

Lions | Alex Anzalone suffers hamstring injury    Mon Jul 21, 09:14 AM

Detroit Lions LB Alex Anzalone (hamstring) is out with a hamstring injury, according to head coach Dan Campbell. No timetable for his return was given.

Footballguys view: According to local reports, this news confirms that Anzalone is not voluntarily missing practice as a "hold-in" protest against not having a new contract. Anzalone would like a new deal entering the final year of his three-year, $18.75 million contract signed in 2023. But on Sunday, head coach Dan Campbell felt fairly certain Anzalone wasn't the type of player to sit out on his own accord. Veteran Zach Cunningham, who was signed as a free agent back in May, will get more work in Anzalone's absence.

  49ers | Three-year extension for Fred Warner    Mon May 19, 05:04 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB Fred Warner agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension with the 49ers Monday, May 19, worth $63 million. The deal includes $56.7 million in guaranteed money.

Footballguys view: After completing lucrative contract extensions with quarterback Brock Purdy and tight end George Kittle in recent weeks, the 49ers had one more key player to take care of to wrap up their most pressing offseason business. While Purdy's deal represented the largest deal in team history (five years for $265 million, including $181 million in overall guaranteed money) and the biggest raise the Niners have ever handed out, Warner's extension always figured to be a bit easier because he had two years remaining on the five-year, $95 million deal he signed in 2021. With Warner, 28, Purdy, and Kittle signed before the on-field portion of organized team activities begin, the 49ers can rest easy from a business standpoint as they head toward training camp.

Broncos | Alex Singleton optimistic about Week 1    Wed May 7, 01:53 PM

Denver Broncos LB Alex Singleton (knee) said he is on track in his recovery from knee injury and believe he will be ready to play Week 1.

Footballguys view: Singleton played 190 defensive snaps last season, with 49 coming after he tore an anterior cruciate ligament. Singleton injured his knee on the eighth play of the Week 3 win over the Buccaneers on Sept. 22. He didn't miss a snap in the game, but the injury did end the rest of his season. But Singleton, LB20 on the Footballguys Projections, has worked with the Broncos' vice president of player health and performance, Beau Lowery, every day since his surgery on Oct. 15. He posted a video to his Instagram of him running full speed. "Let's just say we're in a really good spot," Singleton said. "You get three more months. Three more. So we're good."

Falcons | ATL fined after prank call saga    Wed Apr 30, 11:43 AM

Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich was fined $100,000, and the team was fined $250,000 for the fraudulent phone call made to QB Shedeur Sanders at the NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Ulbrich's 21-year-old son admitted to the prank call and apologized in an Instagram post Sunday. The Falcons said in a statement Sunday that Jax Ulbrich wrote down the number from his father's open iPad while visiting his parents' home "to later conduct a prank call." The NFL said the fines were for "failing to prevent the disclosure of confidential information distributed to the club in advance of the NFL Draft." The Falcons noted that "the Ulbrich family is working with the organization to participate in community service initiatives in relation to last week's matter." Sanders, who had been widely expected to be selected in the first round before the NFL draft started, had to wait until Day 3 of the draft for his slide to end when the Cleveland Browns picked him in the fifth round. In a conference call with Cleveland-area reporters after the Browns drafted him, Sanders said he wasn't bothered by the prank.
