Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen's status remains uncertain for Sunday's preseason game against the Chicago Bears.'In Josh's case, (we are) really using practice to see where he's at and how he feels. Link to storyBuffalo Bills RB James Cook signed a four-year, $48 million extension Wednesday, Aug. 13. The deal includes $30 million guaranteed.
Footballguys view: The deal is finally done, and Cook is back out at practice ready to participate. Cook is now tied with Josh Jacobs for the sixth-highest annual average salary at the position. Fantasy GMs can breathe a sigh of relief with this deal done. Now, Cook's current ADP (RB14) could move up. Look for him near the turn at the end of the first or early second round. |
Buffalo Bills TE Matt Sokol was released Tuesday, Aug. 12.

Buffalo Bills RB James Cook is expected to practice Tuesday, Aug. 12, as head coach Sean McDermott said 'things have changed' in Cook's contract dispute.
Footballguys view: Nine days after he began a deliberate, business-related boycott of practice while he seeks a new contract, the reason for Cook's decision to get back to work isn't clear. One possible reason? A deal might be near. Speaking to the media before practice, head coach Sean McDermott said that "things have changed" between the two parties. A fair deal that reasonably compensates Cook, further positions the Bills to get back to the Super Bowl, and solidifies the running back's fantasy potential is the best-case outcome for all involved. We'll be watching for more. |
Buffalo Bills WR Curtis Samuel (hamstring) could be in jeopardy of not making the 53-man roster, in the opinion of Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic, who notes that this is the second consecutive training camp that Samuel has suffered a multi-week injury. Cutting Samuel now would be the same as cutting him in the offseason, and though Buscaglia believes Samuel's play late last season still could be enough to land on the initial roster, he isn't 'ruling out' the possibility that Samuel will be released.

Link to storyBuffalo Bills CB Taron Johnson (head) left the preseason game versus the New York Giants Saturday, Aug. 9, in order to be evaluated for a concussion. However, he received clearance to return later.

Buffalo Bills RB James Cook participated in pregame warmups prior to the team's preseason opener versus the New York Giants Saturday, Aug. 9, but declined to play in the game because of his contract dispute, according to head coach Sean McDermott.
Footballguys view: There's no end in sight for Cook's hold-in, as the Bills tend to stick to their guns in contract negotiations. We still expect Cook to be on the field Week 1 against Baltimore, but if this situation doesn't thaw and he is still sitting out practices going into September, then it might be time to worry about him missing regular season games. It's reasonable to let Cook slide to the bottom of his tier and only take him if he's there in the fifth round of drafts until this gets resolved. |
Buffalo Bills TE Dalton Kincaid caught one pass for 10 yards in the preseason game against the New York Giants Saturday, Aug. 9.

Buffalo Bills WR Kelly Akharaiyi was waived Friday, Aug. 8.
Link to storyBuffalo Bills RB James Cook did not participate in practice Thursday, Aug. 7, and has sat out each of the last four practices because of his contract situation.
Footballguys view: At this point, it will be news when Cook participates in practice. The Bills don't seem to be budging on Cook wanting a new deal. As we get closer to the regular season, perhaps we'll see some movement. Until then, we wait. |
Buffalo Bills WR Curtis Samuel (hamstring) is making progress in his recovery from a hamstring injury but is still not ready to return to practice, according to head coach Sean McDermott.

Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen will not play in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 9, according to head coach Sean McDermott.
Footballguys view: Allen may or may not play in the preseason. He's going to play like an MVP again this year, so they just need to keep him healthy and get to the regular season. |

Buffalo Bills WR Khalil Shakir (ankle) is expected to be ready for Week 1, according to head coach Sean McDermott.
Footballguys view: The Bills have a talented group of receivers, and QB Josh Allen likes to spread the ball around. Shakir is a favorite of Allen, but he's currently going off the board at WR41. |
Buffalo Bills OT Spencer Brown (back) returned to team drills for the first time during training camp Wednesday, Aug. 6, and he played more snaps than the team had planned.
Link to storyThe Buffalo Bills designated LB Baylon Spector (calf) as waived/injured on Wednesday, Aug. 6 due to a calf injury suffered earlier in the week.
Link to storyBuffalo Bills RB James Cook will not participate in practice Wednesday, Aug. 6, because of his contract situation.
Footballguys view: Bills GM Brandon Beane says "I get it" when talking about Cook staying out of practice during contract negotiations. We don't expect the situation to last into the regular season. Until a new contract, we're just waiting with Cook. Ray Davis and Ty Johnson get more work with Cook not practicing. |
Buffalo Bills LB Baylon Spector (calf) left practice due to a calf injury during team drills. There is no word on the severity, but apparently it is bad enough, as the team brought in linebackers for tryouts.
Link to storyBuffalo Bills WR Tyrell Shavers has taken advantage of the extra opportunities afforded him by injuries to several receivers, according to ESPN's Alaina Getzenberg, who wrote that Shavers 'made his presence felt' in practice on Monday, Aug. 4. Head coach Sean McDermott said that Shavers is 'a hard guy to stop.'
Link to storyBuffalo Bills RB James Cook (personal) is out of practice Monday, Aug. 4.
Footballguys view: No real surprise here. Cook was also present Sunday afternoon but did not participate in a mandatory practice for the first time since seeking a contract extension this offseason. Cook, talking to a group of three reporters after practice, was asked why he did not participate. "Oh, nothing," he said. "Business." The running back's contract situation has been an ongoing issue after Cook went public early in the offseason with his desire to be paid like one of the NFL's top running backs. We'll continue to monitor this situation through resolution. |
Buffalo RB James Cook missed practice on August 3. When asked why, he said "business". That was also his reply to questions about whether he would practice later in the week. Cook was previously seeking a new contract, but showed up and participated in mandatory minicamp and the beginning of training camp.
Footballguys view: We aren't worried... yet. Still, Ray Davis becomes more interesting as a late round pick. He was excellent in the one game Cook missed last year, and it's possible that the team trusts him enough to be the lead back if Cook decides to miss time early in the season to try to force action from the team. The Bills could also make some contract concessions for this season (like new incentives or a raise) to placate Cook. A long term at Cook's desired terms of $15 million a season seems unlikely. |
Buffalo Bills WR Khalil Shakir (ankle) has been diagnosed with a high ankle sprain and is considered week to week, according to head coach Sean McDermott.
Footballguys view: Shakir isn't a sure thing to be ready for Week 1 against Baltimore. Keon Coleman, Dalton Kincaid, and Elijah Moore also have the ability to replace what Shakir provides in the slot, so we'll be watching closely to see who is ready to seize the additional opportunity and possibly have a hot start the season. This is a small blow to Josh Allen, who relies on Shakir more than any of his other targets, and Shakir should be moved down to the end of his tier in redraft leagues. High ankle sprains have a high potential for re-injury and the issue could affect him well into the season. |
Buffalo Bills WR Khalil Shakir (undisclosed) left practice early Friday, Aug. 1, because of a possible foot or ankle injury.
Footballguys view: Reports suggest that it is a minor injury, but it ended his practice and he left with trainers. We'll pass on any new details we learn about the injury and how it changes his outlook. Shakir is the de facto #1 receiver in this offense and still capable of growing as a fantasy asset. |
Buffalo Bills WR Curtis Samuel (undisclosed) and WR Kaden Prather (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Friday, Aug. 1.
