Link to storyArizona Cardinals RB Trey Benson is expected to see plenty of work in the backfield this season, as the team uses the concept of co-RB1 with RB James Conner. 'My confidence is through the roof right now,' Benson said.
Footballguys view: The talk of Benson sharing the lead role with Conner dates back to the Scouting combine. Now that the Cardinals have reached their first exhibition game of the season, it has become clear. "It's the situation we are in and we can't shy away from it," Conner said. Conner is coming off his best NFL season and just signed an extension. Benson, the 2024 third-round pick, was looking more and more Conner-esque as a rookie before an ankle sprain derailed his final month. According to current ADP, Conner (RB19) is going eight rounds ahead of Benson (RB48). |
Arizona Cardinals RB James Conner indicated Saturday, Aug. 2, that he and RB Trey Benson will both be seeing a lot of time in the backfield this season. 'It's the situation we are in and we can't shy away from it,' Conner said. 'We've got to talk about it and understand what's expected. We want to be the best rushing team in football. We need that from (Benson). And the rest of the backs. We can't shy away from those conversations.'
Footballguys view: The 30-year-old Conner had 236 carries to Benson's 63 last year, earning a two-year extension after a career-best 1,094 rushing yards. Conner finished as RB11 in fantasy. Still, HC Jonathan Gannon began hinting at a "two No. 1 backs" approach earlier this year. As Darren Urban of the team's official website suggests, that doesn't mean Conner is going to be pushed aside. Instead, it mostly underscores how much the Cardinals want the running game to be the identity of their offense. Worth noting: Conner is going as RB19 in Round 5; Benson is RB48 with a 13th-round price tag. |

Link to storyFree-agent QB Carter Bradley (Raiders), WR Nate McCollum (Seahawks), WR Ja'Seem Reed (Browns) and WR Braylon Sanders (Patriots) recently worked out for the Arizona Cardinals.
Link to storyArizona Cardinals TE Trey McBride has caught six total touchdown passes in his three seasons in the NFL.
Footballguys view: McBride is arguably the best tight end in the NFL, but his lack of touchdowns is frustrating to some Fantasy GMs. Don't blame McBride, but instead look to QB Kyler Murray. McBride should have over 100 catches and over 1,000 yards again this year, and if Murray can find him more near pay dirt those touchdowns should rise. Projecting McBride for 4-5 touchdowns in 2025 seems right, and he's currently at TE2 in ADP. |
Arizona Cardinals WR Marvin Harrison Jr. is 'definitely more comfortable' this season, according to QB Kyler Murray. 'I can see it out there on the field, and I think that'll only allow him to play faster, be the guy that we all know he can be,' Murray said.
Footballguys view: That's great news for Harrison, Cardinals fans, Murray himself, and - oh yeah - Fantasy GMs out there. Harrison has dynamic talent, and he could end up becoming one of the best wide receivers in the entire league. Currently, Harrison's ADP is WR18 (consensus) but he ability and opportunity will be there for him to outperform that position. If/when he hits, Harrison has WR1 set-it-and-forget-it potential every week....it's just a matter of when it all clicks for him. |
Arizona Cardinals WR Marvin Harrison Jr. caught six of his eight touchdown on first down plays last season.
Footballguys view: Harrison should be a force on first downs - and every down - once again this year. He's put on muscle this offseason to help at the catch point and with his run-after-the-catch ability. Harrison is getting praise from Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon for his offseason dedication, and that would should pay dividends in 2025. |
Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray anticipates running more often than he has in recent seasons in 2025, according to Johnny Venerable of the PHNX Cardinals podcast.'(Kyler Murray) told us on our show a month ago ... He wants to run more, will run more this year. Take that for what it's worth. ... I think his numbers will be closer to that 2020 season - both passing and rushing. I don't know if he'll ever get back to those rushing yards (819), but a good year for Kyler on the ground (in 2025) would 500-plus yards and five-plus touchdowns,' Venerable said.
Footballguys view: Murray has said that his knee was bothering him at times last year even though it was almost two years removed from a 2022 ACL tear. He has been disappointing in fantasy leagues, but his ADP still reflects his previous demonstrated upside. A return to form as a runner would raise Murray's weekly ceiling and make his floor games and inconsistencies as a passer more tolerable. |

Arizona Cardinals WR Zay Jones likely will serve as the No. 3 receiver for the Cardinals this upcoming season, in the opinion of CardsWire's Jess Root.
Footballguys view: With Trey McBride also being a top-two passing option, that means Jones will likely be, at best, fourth on the team in targets. Jones has gotten his career back on track after a bumpy start. But barring a huge breakout from Kyler Murray, it's tough to envision the veteran finding himself in a fantasy-relevant role. |

Arizona Cardinals WR Marvin Harrison Jr. is expected to 'make a jump' in his second season, according to The Athletic's Doug Haller, who notes that Harrison has bulked up and that QB Kyler Murray says that Harrison has a 'different confidence.'
Footballguys view: Despite a common notion that Harrison struggled in Year 1, 885 yards and eight touchdowns are nothing to scoff at. Harrison wasn't afforded the quick, easy routes many young receivers see. He was immediately asked to run every route in the book and often struggled to get on the same page with Kyler Murray. But the talent flashed, and a jump to superstardom in Year 2 wouldn't surprise many people. |
Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray's scrambling ability and ability to create off-scheduled plays need to be utilized more, according to offensive coordinator Drew Petzing. 'I think those are game-changing plays,' Petzing said. 'He's one of the few people in this league that can do it physically at a high level and create some of those. So, we want to make sure we're taking advantage of that.'
Footballguys view: After a staggering 51.2 rushing yards per game in his 2020 sophomore campaign, Murray hasn't eclipsed 38 yards per game in a season since. Before his 2022 season-ending knee injury, he was pacing for the second-most rushing yards of his career. But since the injury, the rushing volume has dipped. The difference between a fringe QB1 season and an elite finish likely hinges on Murray's willingness to run more. But the ceiling makes him an alluring player who can easily outperform his QB9 APD. |

Arizona Cardinals WR Michael Wilson said he hopes to average 13 to 15 yards per catch this upcoming season. He averaged 11.7 yards per catch in 2024.
Footballguys view: The per-game usage for Wilson remained almost identical from Year 1 to Year 2. But dips in target depth, yards after the catch, and missed tackles caused a drop in his overall production. While it's hopeful that Wilson can improve his efficiency going into Year 3, being third in the pecking order behind Marvin Harrison Jr. and Trey McBride will likely keep him a touchdown-dependent fantasy option for desperate managers. |

Arizona Cardinals WR Michael Wilson appears likely to be one of the starting wide receivers this upcoming season, in the opinion of AZCardinals.com's Darren Urban.
Footballguys view: Behind Marvin Harrison Jr. and Trey McBride, the corps of pass-catchers in Arizona leaves a lot to be desired. But Wilson, a former third-round pick, has had a pretty quiet start to his career despite being a full-time player. He's got the size and physicality to be a threat in the red zone. But in fantasy, he's little more than a touchdown-depedant WR5 unless Kyler Murray take a huge step forward. |

Trey Benson is seeking a bigger role in Year 2. The 2024 third-round running back didn't make a huge splash as a rookie, logging just 63 rushing attempts for 291 yards and a touchdown behind workhorse James Conner, but he believes a higher share of carries could be in order moving forward. "I feel like I'll get more opportunities and help James out more," Benson said during mandatory minicamp. "I feel like we can have two RB1s on this team, and that's my mindset this year is two RB1s."
Footballguys view: As NFL.com noted, it remains to be seen how many carries the 30-year-old Conner would actually end up losing. The veteran averaged a career-high 5.0 yards per carry in 2023 with a career-high 1,040 rushing yards to match. He then bested that mark with 1,094 yards on 236 carries in 2024. His 47 catches and 414 receiving yards were his most since 2018, his second season in the league. It seems unlikely a healthy Conner will be coming off the field much, but we'll watch for more on Benson's chances of earning more work during camp. |

Arizona Cardinals CB Will Johnson (hamstring) is not participating in the mandatory minicamp this week because of a tight hamstring. Head coach Jonathan Gannon said Johnson will be ready for training camp.
Link to storyArizona Cardinals RB Trey Benson told the team's website that he added seven pounds of muscle since last season. He also noted that he explosiveness metrics have improved noticeably.
Footballguys view: Benson is a powerful player who wins at the point of contact and keeps his feet moving to pick up more yards. The Cardinals have James Conner as their lead back, but HC Jonathan Gannon said if Benson takes the jump from year 1 to year 2 "I think we have two starting backs.†|
Arizona Cardinals DT Walter Nolen signed a four-year contract Tuesday, June 10. Per NFL rules, the team has a fifth-year option as Nolen was a first-round selection. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Link to storyArizona Cardinals OT Jonah Williams (knee) worked on a side field during practice Wednesday, May 28.
Link to storyArizona Cardinals RB James Conner (knee) participated in practice Thursday, May 29.
Footballguys view: Good news for the veteran back here. He missed the final game of the 2024 season because of a knee injury. Earlier this offseason, Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon said â€"If [Trey Benson] takes the necessary jump from Year 1 to Year 2, I think we have two starting backs.†Conner is the lead back for the Cardinals, but Benson may force more of an RBBC approach in 2025. |

Updating a previous report, Arizona Cardinals CB Sean Murphy-Bunting (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list because he underwent knee surgery this offseason, according to head coach Jonathan Gannon.
