Carolina Panthers LB DJ X. Johnson (illness) did not take part in training camp practice on Wednesday, July 24, because of an undisclosed illness.
Link to storyCarolina Panthers WR Xavier Legette took part in practice at training camp on Wednesday, July 24, after missing time earlier this offseason with a hamstring injury.
Footballguys view: Legette has a fine size/speed combination, and we're excited about the first-round rookie from a dynasty perspective. We'll see if he can stay healthy and become a favorite target of QB Bryce Young. |
Carolina Panthers RB Jonathon Brooks (knee) and LB D.J. Wonnum (quadriceps) do not have timetables for their return, according to general manager Dan Morgan.

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathon Brooks (knee) was placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury list on Friday, July 19.
Footballguys view: The Panthers are staying patient, and they're playing the long game with Brooks. We love his natural talent, and Brooks could be a fine starter in this league someday. He sustained a torn ACL last November, so missing half of his rookie season in 2024 could be in the cards. Chubba Hubbard and Miles Sanders (or Rashaad Penny) will carry the bulk of the workload from the backfield. We love Brooks in dynasty formats though. |
Carolina Panthers LBs D.J. Wonnum (quadriceps) and Amare Barno (knee), WR Jalen Coker (undisclosed) and OT Yosh Nijman (undisclosed) were placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list on Friday, July 19.

When asked to identify a breakout player in the Panthers' offense, The Athletic's Joseph Person chose quarterback Bryce Young.
Footballguys view: Person went on to explain the fairly obvious reasoning: "It's hard to imagine last year's No. 1 pick posting worse stats than he did as a rookie," Person wrote, "when Young was the NFL's lowest-rated passer and finished with just 11 touchdown passes and one 300-yard passing game -- in a 33-30 loss to Green Bay in Week 16." Beyond the "low-bar" theory, it should be noted the Panthers spent free-agent capital and draft picks to improve their pass protection and surround Young with more playmakers. And while he might not vault to the top of the passing charts -- or even the top third, Person believes it's reasonable to think Young will have a bump in production while throwing to a more explosive receiving corps that includes former Steelers wideout Diontae Johnson and first-round pick Xavier Legette. |
Carolina Panthers vice president of player personnel Adrian Wilson has left the organization after one season, according to a club spokesperson.

Carolina Panthers WR Xavier Legette (hamstring) missed some offseason workouts because of a hamstring injury but has started to work out again.
Link to storyCarolina Panthers WR Adam Thielen is expected to play in the slot this season with WR Diontae Johnson and WR Xavier Legette starting on the outside, according to Mike Kaye of the Charlotte Observer.
Footballguys view: 2023 second round pick Jonathan Mingo is already on the outside looking in as a draft pick of the previous regime. The expectation has been for Johnson to dominate targets in the Panthers pass offense this year, but if Thielen is getting most of the slot snaps, we could be underestimating him in PPR leagues. The hope is that the offense is greatly improved under new head coach Dave Canales and both Johnson and Thielen can be value picks at there ADPs. |

Carolina Panthers RB Chuba Hubbard will be competing with RB Miles Sanders for the starting running back job during training camp but should be considered the leading candidate for the job at this time.
Footballguys view: Hubbard is an afterthought in fantasy drafts even though he is the most likely Week 1 running back starter for the Panthers. Second round pick Jonathon Brooks is coming from an ACL tear, so the team has every reason to bring him along slowly. Hubbard decisively outplayed Miles Sanders last year, but there is a new coaching regime, so maybe Sanders can redeem himself. If Brooks has a setback or slow recovery, Hubbard could even have some lasting value this season. The Panthers already paid Sanders a $1 million roster bonus, so he and his $4 million plus salary won't get released, but he or Rashaad Penn could be a trade candidate if both have a good camp and Brooks doesn't start the season on the PUP list. |

Carolina Panthers LB Amare Barno (knee) appears to be a candidate to start the season on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, in the opinion of the Charlotte Observer's Mike Kaye.

Carolina Panthers TE Ian Thomas has 'stolen the spotlight at a position that is featured in (head coach) Dave Canales' passing game,' according to ESPN.com's David Newton.
Footballguys view: Much was made about the upgrade at TE when the Panthers selected Texas' Ja'Tavion Sanders in the fourth round. But Newton reports that Thomas, primarily a blocker who had only five catches last season, has become a big target at a position for which the Panthers ranked last in the NFL the past four seasons with 181 catches for 1,734 yards and 10 touchdowns. We'll note that while Baker Mayfield, Mike Evans, and Rachaad White had great success in Canales' scheme in Tampa Bay last season, Cade Otten finished the year as TE20 after pulling in 47 catches for 455 yards with four touchdowns. Keep your expectations for Thomas and Sanders in check here. |

Updating a previous report, free-agent WR Daewood Davis (UFL) signed a one-year contract worth $795,000 with the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday, June 18.
Link to storyCarolina Panthers QB Bryce Young is getting more comfortable entering his second NFL season, according to WR Adam Thielen. ''You can tell, Bryce's demeanor in the building -- he's just more comfortable, right? And you don't realize it when you start getting to be a veteran guy, just because you forget about those times,' said Thielen.
Footballguys view: Young should experience some growth under new head Dave Canales, who helped revive Baker Mayfield and Geno Smith's careers at his last two stops. Whether that will make him fantasy relevant outside of superflex leagues is yet to be seen. He's on the fringe of draftable in 1QB leagues. |

Free-agent CB Adoree' Jackson (Giants) could be an option for the Carolina Panthers if they are looking to sign another cornerback, in the opinion of The Charlotte Observer's Mike Kaye.

Free-agent DE Breeland Speaks (UFL) is drawing interest from the Carolina Panthers, per source on Tuesday, June 18.

Updating a previous report, free-agent WR Daewood Davis (UFL) signed an undisclosed contract with the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday, June 18.
Link to storyDespite being slowed by a hamstring injury, Xavier Legette will be a starter right away. "That combination of size, speed, how explosive he is, the way he comes out of routes, it's definitely something that I gotta get used to,'' quarterback Bryce Young said. "We're working on getting that timing down, but I'm super excited."
Footballguys view: As ESPN.com's David Newton reminded readers, Carolina traded into the first round to get the 6-foot-3 Xavier Legette because he reminded the team of the big receivers (Mike Evans, DK Metcalf) that played significant roles in head coach Dave Canales' offenses in the past. They also wanted a receiver who could create separation and get open deep. While fantasy managers are unlikely to invest in the Panthers beyond the front-line pieces, Young making good on optimistic reports about his progress could lead to interest in ancillary pieces with upside like Legette. We'll watch for more. |
Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young is positioned to 'take a big jump' in his second season, according to QB Andy Dalton. 'We're going to see Bryce do things he didn't do last year just because of the experience,' Dalton said. 'We're already seeing it right now.''
Footballguys view: Given the considerable investment to land Young, getting the QB on track has been a primary objective. Incoming coach Dave Canales is coming off a 2023 season in which he helped turn Baker Mayfield's career around in Tampa Bay. The offensive line, a problem last year, was upgraded via free agency. They also traded for Steelers wideout Diontae Johnson to bolster a receiving corps led by Adam Thielen. Still, improvement is likely to be incremental. So it's worth remembering he completed 59.8 percent of his passes for 2,877 yards with 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while leading the team to a 2-14 record (in his 16 starts). Keep your expectations in check. |
Carolina Panthers WR Diontae Johnson is entering the final year of his contract but said he is open to signing an extension with the team.
Footballguys view: Johnson might leave some money on the table if he doesn't let the free agency market set his price in an ever-rising wide receiver salary explosion, but the small trade compensation the Steelers got for him could indicate a lack of interest in him around the league. He has a chance to change that with a good season. The Panthers will tell us what they think of how things are going with Johnson by their action or lack thereof to explore an extension before or during the season. |

Carolina Panthers LB D.J. Wonnum (quadriceps) still needs to make some progress in his recovery and likely will be eased into practice once training camp starts, according to head coach Dave Canales.

Carolina Panthers WR Xavier Legette is not participating in practices this week because of his hamstring injury but should be ready for the start of training camp, according to head coach Dave Canales.
Link to storyCarolina Panthers LB DJ X. Johnson (calf) was carted off the field with a calf injury on Tuesday, June 11, and will not participate in the remainder of mandatory minicamp. However, head coach Dave Canales expects Johnson to recover fully by training camp.
Link to storyCarolina Panthers RB Miles Sanders (heel) has been working on the side during offseason workouts and not practice with the team due to a heel injury, according to head coach Dave Canales. Per Canales, the team is being cautious with the running back.
Footballguys view: With incoming rookie Jonathon Brooks and Chuba Hubbard ahead of him, Cody Benjamin of CBSSports recently listed Sanders among his top post-June 1 cut and trade candidates. Even with new coach Dave Canales angling for a stronger run game, releasing Sanders would save the Panthers an instant $200,000. Avoiding possible complications in advance of any potential roster move makes sense. |

Free-agent WR Hakeem Butler (Steelers) is expected to work out for the Carolina Panthers in the near future, according to a source.

Free-agent WR Daewood Davis (UFL) is expected to sign an undisclosed contract with the Carolina Panthers in the near future, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The Dolphins signed Davis as a UDFA out of Western Kentucky last year. He didn't make the final roster, but he did make it to the UFL's Memphis Showboats. Davis was named to the All-UFL team, and he had 41 receptions for 446 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Now, Davis gets a chance on a team with a lot less talent at the wide receiver position than the Dolphins had. |
Carolina Panthers OG Ilm Manning (undisclosed) was released from the Reserve/Injured list Wednesday, June 5, after the two sides reach an injury settlement.
Link to storyCarolina Panthers LB D.J. Wonnum (quadriceps) has been dealing with some complications from his quadriceps surgery this offseason, according to head coach Dave Canales.

Carolina Panthers RB Miles Sanders (undisclosed) has been dealing with an undisclosed injury for the past few weeks and is still not ready to practice at this point. He has been working on the side during offseason workouts.

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers WR Xavier Legette (hamstring) is still dealing with a hamstring issue Tuesday, June 4.
Footballguys view: In need of an outside threat for Bryce Young, Legette is an explosive, yards-after-catch threat that can turn shorter routes into more significant gains. As ESPN's Jordan Reid suggests, Legette could assume the Chris Godwin role in Dave Canales' offense. With a front-line job in the works, a cautious approach now makes sense. |
Carolina Panthers WR Xavier Legette (hamstring) tweaked his hamstring at practice on Tuesday, May 28, and is not practicing on Wednesday, May 29, as a precaution.
Footballguys view: Legette has a size/speed combination that we love. The Panthers moved into the end of the first round to secure his services, and now he's going to take some time to recover. We're not concerned about this hamstring injury unless it lingers into training camp. Stay tuned. |
