Bears | Luther Burden on track for camp Thu Jun 12, 09:45 AM
Chicago Bears WR Luther Burden III (undisclosed) has missed time this offseason because of an injury but is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, according to head coach Ben Johnson.
Footballguys view: Burden is an exciting rookie prospect with some Deebo Samuel to his game. The second-round pick from Missouri can take short passes and turn them into long gains. He will try to find a spot in the pecking order with DJ Moore and Rome Odunze. Add in Cole Kmet and Colston Loveland at the tight end position, and you can see how targets are going to be spread around. |
Chicago Bears TE Colston Loveland (shoulder) is still recovering from a shoulder injury, and head coach Ben Johnson would not say if Loveland will be a full participant when training camp begins.
Footballguys view: Loveland was arguably the best tight end in the 2025 NFL Draft. He can fly down the field and is a threat in the middle of the defense. When healthy, Loveland can be Johnson's version of Sam LaPorta...and that should get the attention of every Fantasy GM out there. Loveland is a TE2 with upside this season splitting time with Cole Kmet. |
Chicago Bears WR Luther Burden III (undisclosed) is expected to fully recover from the undisclosed injury he suffered during rookie minicamp by the start of training camp in late July, according to head coach Ben Johnson.
Footballguys view: As CBSSports.com notes, Burden sustained an undisclosed soft-tissue injury during rookie minicamp and has been sidelined since. It looks like the rookie second-round pick won't get in any work at mandatory minicamp, notable reps to miss given that Burden already sat out voluntary OTAs. Once healthy at training camp, Burden will work to make up for lost time and secure the No. 3 receiver role behind DJ Moore and Rome Odunze. |
Chicago Bears WR Rome Odunze said he focused on becoming stronger this offseason, and his goals are to catch double-digit touchdowns and top 1,000 receiving yards.
Footballguys view: We're much more excited about the Bears' passing attack this season with HC Ben Johnson. Odunze should become one of the favorite targets for QB Caleb Williams, and we see flex appeal if the second-year pros take to this system. |
Chicago Bears WR Rome Odunze said he will be participating in the offseason workouts next week with the team. The Bears are planning to have the young players participate in the workouts.
Footballguys view: Bears HC Ben Johnson has been extremely impressed with Odunze this offseason in terms of preparation. Fantasy GMs are excited to see what more the second-year player can do this season. We like him as a deep flex option with WR3/flex upside as the Bears offense should look much better under Johnson's guidance. |
Chicago Bears TE Joel Wilson and RB Kyle Monangai were identified by head coach Ben Johnson as two of the players who have stood out on offense this spring.
Footballguys view: Let's put a pin in this news item and circle back when the Bears are in training camp and the preseason. During OTAs, Fantasy GMs should be listening for 'drum beats' of information. This one is loud and clear coming from Johnson. Manangai is the no.3 back behind D'Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson. Wilson is the competing for a roster spot in the tight end room behind Cole Kmet and Colston Loveland. |
Chicago Bears RB D'Andre Swift has been working with running backs coach Eric Bieniemy to avoid negative runs that result from him trying to do to much.
Footballguys view: Swift has a tendency to dance behind the line of scrimmage, and that's not what the team needs. Bieniemy is a seasoned running back coach, so Swift should be listening intently to what he's being coached to do. Swift is coming off a career-low 3.8 yards per carry in 2024. We could see him approaching the 1,000-yard mark this year with around 35 catches as the Bears lead back. That makes Swift an RB2 with upside for Fantasy GMs out there. |

Chicago Bears TE Colston Loveland (shoulder) and TE Stephen Carlson (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Wednesday, June 4.

Chicago Bears WR Luther Burden III (undisclosed) did not participate at the team's mandatory minicamp, according to sources Tuesday, June 3.
Footballguys view: Burden, who suffered an injury to his midsection in a May 10 practice, is missing critical opportunities to build chemistry with quarterback Caleb Williams during OTAs. The hope is Burden can return during minicamp or the second phase of OTAs next week. If not, training camp in July will be the next time fans will look to see if these guys step on the practice field. |
Chicago Bears LB T.J. Edwards (undisclosed) and CB Kyler Gordon (undisclosed) are dealing with soft tissue injuries, according to head coach Ben Johnson.

Chicago Bears S Kevin Byard said he wants to stay with the Bears for the rest of his career but understands it's a year-to-year situation. 'I put everything, my heart and my soul into this year, to this team, to this group of guys, and then we revisit those things in the offseason,' Byard said this week, via team transcript. 'I would love to be here long term, to finish my career with the Chicago Bears. That's all I'm focused on right now.'

Chicago Bears DE Shemar Turner will focus on playing along the interior of the defensive line before the team considers testing his edge versatility, according to defensive coordinator Dennis Allen.
Footballguys view: Coming out of Texas A&M this year, Turner had 'tweener' traits on the field for the Aggies. The Bears liked him enough to spend a second-round pick on him, and he'll work inside to begin his pro career. Turner can get off the snap quickly, and he's the type of player who can create interior pressure. However, his lack of mass could allow double teams to move him out of the way inside. |
Chicago Bears DL Daniel Hardy will see time as both a defensive lineman and a linebacker during offseason programs and training camp. Head coach Ben Johnson said that the team wants to expand Hardy's skillset and see what he looks like dropping back into coverage, in order to take advantage of his pass-rush ability.
Footballguys view: A former seventh-round pick of the Rams (2022), Hardy has been developing as a practice squad player for the Bears. He's seen limited action on the field defensively, and Hardy is entering a make-or-break season in 2025. |
Free-agent RB J.K. Dobbins (Chargers) has 'the size and rushing style that would complement D'Andre Swift will and add a physicality to the attack that's beneficial to (head coach) Ben Johnson's scheme,' according to Scott Bair of the Marquee Sports Network. Bair also believes that Dobbins is 'a safer bet' to sign with the team than former Cleveland Browns RB Nick Chubb.
Footballguys view: The Bears are looking to add more talent to their running backs room, and Dobbins could be that guy. He's a season veteran coming off a good season with the Chargers where he had 905 yards rushing and nine rushing touchdowns. The Bears have until July 22nd to sign Dobbins because the Chargers put an unrestricted free agent tender on him and will have 'exclusive negotiating rights' after that date. |

Chicago Bears WR Rome Odunze is 'very much like a seasoned pro' and someone head coach Ben Johnson has been 'extremely impressed' with so far.'To be a second-year guy, you would expect a little bit more inconsistency. And yet, the way he approaches the meeting room, the walk-throughs, the on-field, the drill work, it's very much like a seasoned pro, some of the best that I've been around. ... I think we're going to see a lot of growth from him, not just in the springtime, but once we get to camp,' Johnson said during his press conference on Wednesday, May 21.
Footballguys view: Good news for the second-year receiver. Odunze had a disappointing rookie season with all the hype that was generated during the draft last year for the first-round receiver. He finished with 54 catches for 734 yards and three touchdowns. Now, with Johnson running the offense, Odunze is seen as a WR3/flex option with plenty of upside. |
Chicago Bears WR Luther Burden III (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Wednesday, May 21, because of a soft tissue injury, according to head coach Ben Johnson.
Footballguys view: "We're working through a little soft-tissue deal with him right now, and it remains to be seen when we'll get him back," Johnson said. The Bears selected Burden with the 39th overall pick, the sixth wide receiver off the board. It has Burden motivated to make "everybody who passed up on me . . . pay." He might not have tremendous redraft value this season, but Burden's versatility and ability to create yards after the catch made him a focal point of Missouri's offense. His long-term future in Johnson's offense in Chicago should be of great interest to Dynasty investors. |
Chicago Bears OG Joe Thuney received a two-year extension Tuesday, May 20. It's worth $17.5 million per year, per source, making it $51 million for the next three years with $33.5 million fully guaranteed at signing.
Footballguys view: Thuney was traded to the Bears by the Kansas City Chiefs in March in exchange for a 2026 fourth-round draft pick. He was entering the final season of a five-year, $80 million contract he signed with the Chiefs as a free agent in 2021. Over nine NFL seasons with the Patriots and Chiefs, Thuney has missed just two games, starting 146 games. Thuney has the highest pass block win rate (97.8 percent) in the NFL over the past two seasons and is coming off back-to-back seasons as a first-team All-Pro selection. He also was selected to his third straight Pro Bowl in 2024. Caleb Williams will benefit greatly from his presence. |
Chicago Bears WR Luther Burden III will be an option to return punts this upcoming season, according to special teams coordinator Richard Hightower.
Footballguys view: The Chicago Bears landed an explosive playmaker in Burden, so naturally, they'd like to get him the ball as much as possible. While Burden will play a key role in Ben Johnson's offense -- most likely in the slot, where he thrived in college -- he'll also have the opportunity to compete on special teams for the punt returner job. Burden served as a punt returner at Missouri, primarily during his freshman season, where he returned 12 punts for 151 yards (12.6 average), including a punt return touchdown. In his final two years, Burden returned 12 punts for 101 yards (8.3 average). The Bears will have quite the competition at the returner position, including newcomers Olamide Zaccheaus, former Pro Bowl returners Devin Duvernay, Maurice Alexander and Burden, and returning veterans Travis Homer, Tyler Scott, and Josh Blackwell. |
Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams - and specifically his father, Carl - went to 'great lengths' to circumvent the 2024 NFL Draft for several reasons, including their initial impression of the team and its history with quarterbacks, according to details in a forthcoming book from ESPN's Seth Wickersham. The father and son even considered attacking the organization and the city of Chicago in hopes they could make the situation untenable for the franchise, much like Jack and John Elway did with the Baltimore Colts in 1983. Ultimately, Caleb Williams' decision to potentially 'nuke the city' fell by the wayside following a predraft visit, after which he believed he could be part of a process to turn the franchise around.
Footballguys view: The Bears let Williams down last year, and that's why the coaching staff was changed. Coming over from the high-powered Lions, new head coach Ben Johnson should be able to craft a dynamic scheme around Williams and what he does best. Chicago had a Pope named before they had a 4,000 yard passer. Perhaps this year, Williams can be the first to surpass that mark. |
Chicago Bears WR Rome Odunze ranked sixth in the NFL in unrealized yards -- defined as air yards the player got via target but failed to convert into receiving yards -- in 2024, and ESPN's Ben Solak opines that he's 'more than a little worried about the severe lack of chemistry between [QB Caleb] Williams and Odunze.' Solak also adds that if Odunze isn't sharp running new head Ben Johnson's offense there are 'plenty' of options that could 'jump him on the depth chart.'
Footballguys view: Earlier this year, Bears assistant head coach Antwaan Randle El said the Bears can "get [Odunze] the ball in a lot of different ways." New head coach Ben Johnson should be creative in the design of his offense when it comes to getting Odunze opportunities to make plays. |
Undrafted free-agent CB Jeremiah Walker (Stephen F. Austin) signed with the Chicago Bears Monday, May 12. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Link to storyChicago Bears WR Luther Burden III (undisclosed) participated in practice Sunday, May 11, after suffering what appeared to be an undisclosed injury during practice Saturday, May 10.
Footballguys view: Good news for the Bears here. The undisclosed injury was not considered serious on Saturday, and here he is out there on Sunday. Burden is going to play the big slot role for Ben Johnson, something Amon-Ra St. Brown did to perfection under Johnson in the Lions' offense. |
Chicago Bears WR Luther Burden III (undisclosed) left practice early Saturday, May 10, after suffering a possible injury.
Footballguys view: It's early, and this doesn't sound serious. Fantasy GMs and Bears fans are super excited because Burden should play the big slot role that Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown starred in under Ben Johnson. The former Lions OC and new Bears HC is going to have quite the group of weapons around QB Caleb Williams. |
Chicago Bears TE Colston Loveland is 'going to catch a million balls,' according to an NFL executive. 'He will be better than Sam LaPorta,' the executive said.
Footballguys view: The 6-5, 245-pound Loveland, who had 56 receptions, including five for TDs, at Michigan last season, is viewed as a key to unlocking the potential of new coach Ben Johnson's offense -- the same offense that helped Sam LaPorta thrive as a rookie when he caught 86 passes and 10 touchdowns in 2023. LaPorta finished as fantasy's TE1 that season. While Loveland sits at TE18 on the Footballguys 2025 Projections, we'll all look for signs that he might play a role in Chicago similar to LaPorta's in Detroit. |
There will be an open competition for the Chicago Bears' starting strong-side linebacker spot, according to head coach Ben Johnson. LBs Noah Sewell, Ruben Hyppolite II, Swayze Bozeman and Amen Ogbongbemiga are expected to battle for the position.

Chicago Bears TE Colston Loveland (shoulder) did not participate in practice Friday, May 9, because he is recovering from shoulder surgery, according to head coach Ben Johnson.
Footballguys view: Loveland's shoulder surgery is going to keep him out of action for the early part of the offseason. When training camp gets here, Loveland should be out there at least in a limited fashion. |
Chicago Bears fourth-round draft choice LB Ruben Hyppolite II, fifth-round draft choice CB Zah Frazier, sixth-round draft choice OG Luke Newman and seventh-round draft choice RB Kyle Monangai signed four-year contracts with the Bears Thursday, May 8. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Link to storyChicago Bears first-round draft choice TE Colston Loveland signed a four-year contract with the Bears Thursday, May 8, worth $26.64 million. The deal includes a $16.01 million signing bonus as well as a fifth-year option.
Link to storyUndrafted free-agent WR John Richardson (Texas Christian) signed with the Chicago Bears Thursday, May 8. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Link to storyChicago Bears seventh-round draft choice RB Kyle Monangai (Rutgers) is 'a guy who runs angry' and 'a physical runner who is going to ... do the dirty work (on offense), according to offensive coordinator Declan Doyle.'There's a lot to be developed there when guys run that way. He's a physical runner who's going to come in and do the dirty work and really going to add to that room and compete, and that's really what we were looking for in that slot,' Doyle said.
Link to storyChicago Bears RB Travis Homer is a 'relatively secure' pick to make the 53-man roster, in the opinion of The Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs, who notes that it is Homer's special teams ability that makes him a safer selection to make the club than fellow backup RBs Roschon Johnson and Kyle Monangai.
Footballguys view: There are still questions at the position with D'Andre Swift, Roschon Johnson, and seventh-round pick Kyle Monangai, but all three are ahead of Homer in the offensive pecking order. Swift is going at a discount as RB32, with the 100th pick overall in current best-balls, and Johnson is available at the tail end of drafts. Monangai and Homer don't have ADPs. |

New England Patriots RB TreVeyon Henderson (Ohio State) was selected at No. 38 overall on Friday, April 25. However, the Chicago Bears reportedly tried trading up for the No. 35, No. 36 and No. 37 picks and were turned down.
Footballguys view: In a deep class that included star power at the top, the Bears and general manager Ryan Poles did not address the position until they selected Kyle Monangai out of Rutgers with pick No. 233 in the seventh round. But as we see now, it wasn't for a lack of effort. Meanwhile, USA Today's Brendan Sugrue suggests there are still questions surrounding the running back position with D'Andre Swift, Roschon Johnson, and Monangai, and it remains to be seen what the Bears will do next to address them. J.K. Dobbins and Nick Chubb are unsigned free agents, though the Chargers placed an unrestricted tender on Dobbins, which complicates things for teams interested in adding him. |
Chicago Bears first-round draft choice TE Colston Loveland (Michigan) was told by new head coach Ben Johnson that the No. 10 overall pick reminded him 'a lot' of Sam LaPorta.
Footballguys view: The 6-5, 245-pound Loveland, who had 56 receptions, including five for TDs, last season, is viewed as a key to unlocking the potential of Johnson's offense. That same offense allowed LaPorta to catch 86 passes and 10 touchdowns as a Pro Bowl rookie in 2023 when he finished as the No. 1 tight end in fantasy. While Loveland opens as TE21 on the Footballguys 2025 projections, we'll all be looking for signs that he might play a role in Chicago similar to LaPorta's in Detroit. |
