Bears | Kyler Gordon not on field Thu Jul 25, 08:12 PM
Chicago Bears CB Kyler Gordon (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Thursday, July 25, after experiencing some tightness during practice Tuesday, July 23, according to head coach Matt Eberflus. Eberflus does not seem concerned about the injury.
Link to storyChicago Bears C Ryan Bates and C Coleman Shelton have rotated first-team reps at the start of training camp, according to Alyssa Barbieri of Bears Wire. Bates worked with the first team on Monday, July 22, before Shelton took first-team reps on Sunday and Tuesday. Head coach Matt Eberflus suggested that the team is in no rush to name a starter at the position and is willing to let things play out this summer.

Link to storyChicago Bears TE Gerald Everett (undisclosed) was activated from the non-football injury list Sunday, July 21.
Footballguys view: Everett was placed on the NFI list last Friday. Before the weekend is over, Everett passed his conditioning test and will be ready to practice. Cole Kmet is the starter, but Everett is there to give them veteran depth. |

Chicago Bears OT Braxton Jones (undisclosed) will be limited at the start of training camp but his issue isn't considered major, head coach Matt Eberflus said on Saturday, July 20.
Link to storyChicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles has not ruled out adding help at defensive end, although he added that the organization is comfortable with the players that they already have on the roster. DeMarcus Walker is currently penciled in to start opposite Montez Sweat at defensive end, with DEs Austin Booker, Jacob Martin and Dominique Robinson also in the running for the job.

Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams could see 45 to 65 snaps during the preseason, but the team has not decided on a final plan for his preseason play, according to head coach Matt Eberflus.
Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Williams is a supremely gifted rookie quarterback, and he may be the best passer to come into the NFL since Andrew Luck. The Bears have a fine group of receiving weapons around him, so it would be good to see Williams in the preseason. Here's hoping he's the franchise quarterback the Bears have been longing for. |
Chicago Bears OT Kiran Amegadjie (quadriceps) is making progress in his recovery from a quadriceps injury, but general manager Ryan Poles said there is no timetable for his return to the field.

Link to storyChicago Bears TE Gerald Everett (undisclosed) was placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury list on Friday, July 19.
Footballguys view: The Bears have Cole Kmet as their starter, but Everett gives them quality veteran depth at the position. The NFI list is for players who were injured away from the facilities. We'll see when Everett can get his conditioning test done and start practicing with his team. |

Link to storyUpdating a previous report, Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams has not officially signed his rookie contract yet, per source on Wednesday, July 17.
Footballguys view: Williams' reps asked Chicago to agree to not use the franchise tag on him down the road, but the team declined. The two sides are close to finalizing the deal as they go over the final language. |
Chicago Bears RB D'Andre Swift finished in a tie for ninth in the league with 21 broken tackles during the 2023 season, according to Pro Football Reference. In 2022, Swift was credited with only five.
Footballguys view: Swift is the lead back for the Bears, and he's got RB2/flex potential for Fantasy GMs again this year. However, we need to see how much Roschon Johnson can cut into his snaps/touches in 2024. Also, the Bears still have Khalil Herbert, a talented runner in his own right, to get some carries here and there too. Perhaps using an RBBC will keep Swift fresh, and that keeps him breaking tackles consistently. |

Chicago's No. 1 overall pick, Caleb Williams, is signing a four-year, fully guaranteed contract worth $39 million that includes a $25.5 million signing bonus and a fifth-year team option, sources tell ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Footballguys view: Remember, head coach Matt Eberflus named Williams the team's starting quarterback in May. "No conversation," Eberflus said during OTAs. "He's the starter." It's not a huge surprise. As NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah put it, "Williams has franchise-altering upside." That's great news for a team that desperately needs its upside altered. Better still, a supporting cast with DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, D'Andre Swift, and fellow rookie Rome Odunze, the ninth pick overall -- gives Williams plenty of playmaking talent. New offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, who comes from the Sean McVay coaching tree, will tailor a scheme to suit Williams' strengths and maximize that supporting cast. Although the Footballguys 2024 Draft Rankings have him at QB16, well outside QB1 consideration for redraft purposes, Williams is still QB1 for Dynasty investors. |
Chicago Bears first-round draft choice WR Rome Odunze (Washington) reportedly agreed to terms on a four-year contract worth $22.7 million - including a $13.3 million signing bonus - on Tuesday, July 16. The deal includes a fifth-year team option.
Footballguys view: Selected by the Bears with the No. 9 choice in the draft, Odunze appeared in 40 games with 30 starts the past four seasons at Washington, catching 214 passes for 3,272 yards and 24 touchdowns. Odunze will team with veterans DJ Moore and Keenan Allen to give the Bears seemingly one of the NFL's most formidable receiving trios. Bears rookies are set to report to training camp Tuesday, with veterans following Friday. The first practice is scheduled for Saturday. |
Chicago Bears first-round draft choice QB Caleb Williams and first-round draft choice WR Rome Odunze have not signed their rookie contracts at this point. The Bears rookies are scheduled to report for training camp Tuesday, July 16.
Link to storyAsked to identify a breakout player in the Bears offense, The Athletic's Kevin Fishbain chose rookie WR Rome Odunze. "Coaches are reluctant to talk up any player in spring practices, let alone a rookie, yet Matt Eberflus wasn't afraid to praise Odunze," Fishbain wrote. "He's made a strong first impression and should have favorable matchups because of the attention DJ Moore and Keenan Allen will attract."
Footballguys view: Fishbain added the No. 9 pick will be the third Bears wideout taken in fantasy drafts -- and he might even go after tight end Cole Kmet, who is coming off a career season and joining a playcaller in Shane Waldron who highlights that position. But Fishbain contends that on nearly any other team, Odunze wouldn't be a fantasy afterthought. Moore has a Round 4 Average Draft Position as WR19, Allen is going at the tail-end of Round 5 as WR31, and Odunze is being drafted in Round 7 as WR40. |
Chicago Bears RB Khalil Herbert may feel the crunch on cut down day this summer with Roschon Johnson in the mix, Travis Homer occupying a spot on special teams and D'Andre Swift locked in as the starting running back, according to Brendan Sugrue of Bears Wire.
Footballguys view: Herbert is a talented runner who could start elsewhere in the league. He just happens to be behind two talented runners in Chicago. Herbert will have to prove his worth on special teams if he's going to make the roster as the no.3 back on the depth chart. If cut, some team would scoop him up quickly. |

Chicago Bears OT Larry Borom may be on the outside looking in unless he impresses during training camp, according to Brendan Sugrue of BearsWire.
Link to storyChicago Bears S Jonathan Owens will reportedly be granted 'a couple days off from training camp' to watch his wife - gymnast Simone Biles - compete in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, according to Biles.
Link to storyChicago Bears S Jonathan Owens has received permission to miss a few days to be with his wife, Simone Biles, as she competes in the Olympics in Paris.
Link to storyChicago Bears OG Nate Davis (undisclosed) is slated to be the team's starting right guard this season and is likely to be available for training camp, even though he had been limited during practices held earlier this month, according to head coach Matt Eberflus. OGs Ryan Bates and Matt Pryor have also seen time at the position and could step in if Davis is not ready.
Link to storyChicago Bears WR Rome Odunze is an 'every-down player' and 'in contention' to win the punt return job, according to special teams coordinator Richard Hightower.'Rome is an every-down player. Rome's a first-down player, a second-down player, a third-down player and a fourth-down player. He had three returns on the books (in college) and one of those three returns was a house call. ... He's in contention (for the punt return job), just like everybody else. Best man will win, cream rises to the top,' Hightower said.
Footballguys view: Odunze is going third of the top three Bears receivers, with D.J. Moore and Keenan Allen usually going well ahead of him, but the #9 overall pick is still going ahead of some team's #2 or even #1 receivers. Either he and Caleb Williams are going to have an instant magical connection - which is possible, and disappointing if you have Moore or Allen - or Odunze is going to disappoint in redraft leagues. If Odunze can win the punt return job, it does give him a bigger impact in return yardage leagues. |
Chicago Bears WR Velus Jones Jr. looks like a 'freight train' returning kicks, coach Matt Eberflus said.
Footballguys view: Jones isn't going to break into the top three wide receiver group with the Bears adding Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze, but he could matter in return yardage leagues this year. The new kickoff rules should encourage more returns and create more big plays. Return prowess was a big part of Jones' value as a draft prospect, and now the Bears are in a better position to take advantage of it. |
Chicago Bears OT Kiran Amegadjie (quadriceps) is expected to be ready to participate when training camp begins.

Updating a previous report, free-agent WR DeAndre Carter (Raiders) signed a one-year contract worth $1.2 million - including a $75,000 signing bonus - with the Chicago Bears on Thursday, June 13.

A minor hamstring injury sidelined Rome Odunze for several weeks in May but did not slow down his development while learning from veteran wide receivers DJ Moore and Keenan Allen. The Bears have lined up the No. 9 pick at all three receiver spots (X, Z, slot) and tapped into his ability to run a varied route tree, which coaches believe will create mismatches that favor the offense.
Footballguys view: According to ESPN.com's Courtney Cronin, coaches have even experimented with Odunze on punt return, which he did sparingly at Washington (three returns for 87 yards and one TD). The way Odunze has begun to learn the Chicago offense has impressed coaches, including his ability to take a specific play onto the field, recite the playcall and run it on his own. |
The Bears held very little back from rookie quarterback Caleb Williams as he began learning the offense, and his ability to "chunk information, put it into buckets and operate" impressed coach Matt Eberflus throughout the spring.
Footballguys view: According to ESPN.com's Courtney Cronin, coaches encouraged Williams to experiment with different throws in OTAs and minicamp to see what windows he could hit while making sure his footwork timed up with when he released the ball. The 22-year-old quarterback naturally experienced ups and downs in practices while going against an experienced defense that used movement and disguises to challenge the rookie, but every now and again Williams got the better of his teammates. The next step will be continued improvement through training camp. |
Chicago Bears WR Rome Odunze said he would like to break Los Angeles Rams WR Puka Nacua's rookie record of 1,486 yards in a season, according to The Chicago Sun-Times' Jason Lieser.
Footballguys view: We like for receivers to have lofty goals and opinions of their abilities, but Odunze will have trouble doing that with D.J. Moore and Keenan Allen also running routes in the Chicago offense. Odunze is the cheapest of the three in fantasy drafts by 15-20 picks, so he might be the best investment in redraft leagues, banking on the same rookie-rookie chemistry that got Tank Dell out of the gate hot in Houston last year. |
Free-agent WR DeAndre Carter (Raiders) signed an undisclosed deal with the Chicago Bears, according to sources Thursday, June 13.

Link to storyChicago Bears TE Cole Kmet (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Wednesday, June 5.

Chicago Bears RB D'Andre Swift is listed as the No. 1 running back on the team's depth chart and is likely to see a great deal of playing time in third-down and red zone situations, as well as on first and second downs, according to head coach Matt Eberflus.
Footballguys view: We love the top three backs on the Bears' roster. Swift is talented, and he can be reliable on all three downs. However, Roschon Johnson can make plays as a runner and receiver too. Oh yeah, Khalil Herbert has the ability to start for other teams but is second or third in the pecking order with the Bears. We see Swift as an RB2/flex play for Fantasy GMs this year in what will be a split backfield...even though Swift will be the lead back. |

Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams shined during organized team activities on Friday, May 31. Williams completed 13-of-15 passes and 'threw darts all over the field' and a touchdown pass to DJ Moore.
Footballguys view: This showing is on the heels of the rookie struggling during the previous open OTAs practice. It's good to see Williams bounce back after a rough start. His skill is off the charts, and if the Bears can develop him properly Williams could be a superstar. |
