Broncos | Denver moves on from Devaughn Vele Wed Aug 20, 07:04 PM
Denver Broncos WR Devaughn Vele was traded to the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, Aug. 20, in exchange for a 2026 fourth-round draft choice and a 2027 seventh-round draft choice.
Link to storyDenver Broncos RB Jaleel McLaughlin (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Aug. 20.
Footballguys view: McLaughlin is the Broncos' scatback. He likely makes the roster as the no.3 back behind JK Dobbins and RJ Harvey. If one of those guys gets banged up, it's unlikely that McLaughlin's role would grow from what it is right now (change-of-pace scatback). |
Denver Broncos LB Nik Bonitto (foot) said Tuesday, Aug. 19 that an extension with the team 'will get done'. He returned to practice and full team work after missing the past week of training camp due to a bone spur in his foot.

Denver Broncos OT Garrett Bolles (undisclosed) reportedly suffered an undisclosed injury on Thursday, Aug. 14. According to Denver Sports' Will Petersen, Bolles appeared to be in 'significant pain' while trainers tended to him. He was later taken off the field in an ambulance.
Footballguys view: This was just an issue related to asthma and it sounds like Bolles is going to be ok. |
Denver Broncos WR A.T. Perry (undisclosed) has been cleared to participate in individual drills, according to head coach Sean Payton.
Footballguys view: Perry was a buzzy rookie who lost his sophomore campaign to injuries, eventually getting released midseason. He's working on a comeback in 2025, but this Broncos team is already flush with offensive weapons. |

Denver Broncos DT Matt Henningsen (Achilles) will miss the 2025 season due to an Achilles injury suffered in practice Thursday, Aug. 8. Head coach Sean Payton said Henningsen is scheduled to have surgery.
Link to storyDenver Broncos LB Dre Greenlaw (quadriceps) 'probably' will not play in the preseason opener Saturday, Aug. 9 against the San Francisco 49ers, his former team, head coach Sean Payton said Thursday, Aug. 7. He is expected to 'be back working full speed on Monday,' Payton added.

Denver Broncos RB RJ Harvey is listed as the fifth-string running back in the team's first unofficial depth chart.
Footballguys view: Sean Payton buries rookies on the depth chart. Harvey has been making plays during Broncos training camp, both as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. We see JK Dobbins as the lead back to begin the regular season, but Harvey is the 1A at the least. Harvey could take over for Dobbins at some point. Both are RB3/flex plays for Fantasy GMs. |
Denver Broncos LBs Dre Greenlaw (leg) and Que Robinson (bone bruise) were back on the practice field Tuesday, Aug. 5.

Denver Broncos RB J.K. Dobbins (non-injury) did not participate in practice Tuesday, Aug. 5.

Denver Broncos LB Drew Sanders (foot) had foot surgery earlier this week, according to a source. Head coach Sean Payton said the injury was to a ligament, and not a tendon, and he is expected to miss at least a month. 'It's going to certainly be north of four to six weeks,' Payton said.

Denver Broncos LB Dre Greenlaw (quadriceps) is nursing a quadriceps injury, keeping him out of practice. It is not related to his previous quad issue from offseason workouts, head coach Sean Payton said Sunday, Aug. 3.

The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms with DL Zach Allen on a four-year contract extension worth $102 million. The deal includes $69.5 million of guaranteed money.
Footballguys view: Allen was signed to a three year, $45.75 million deal in 2023, and the Broncos clearly feel they got a bargain, so they were willing to reward him with a new deal that pays him at the level he has been producing, adjusted for an ever-increasing salary cap. In IDP leagues that require a defensive tackle, he's a top 10 option according to our IDP rankings. |

Denver Broncos RB Audric Estime was one of the standout performers during practice Tuesday, July 29, in the opinion of the Denver Post's Luca Evans.
Footballguys view: Estime is cut from the same cloth as the newly acquired J.K. Dobbins. It remains to be seen how he'll be integrated into the offense. But he's a bruiser who could find a role with some early-down usage. Sean Payton likes to have a stable of running backs to pull from and isn't afraid to ride the hot hand, potentially giving Estime some sneaky upside. |
Denver Broncos WR Courtland Sutton agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension with the Broncos Monday, July 28, worth $92 million, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Although he turns 30 in October, the Broncos were confident in locking up Sutton long-term after last year's bounce-back season. In 2024, Sutton generated 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns on a career-high 81 catches. The rest of the Broncos' receiving corps enters 2025 with question marks. Marvin Mims Jr., Troy Franklin, Devaughn Vele, and free-agent addition Trent Sherfield are battling for reps. Rookie Pat Bryant, whom HC Sean Payton has compared to Michael Thomas, is also in the mix. But ensuring Sutton is around beyond 2025 gives Bo Nix a baseline player to grow with. |

Denver Broncos LB Justin Strnad is now considered as the top backup behind LBs Dre Greenlaw and Alex Singleton following the foot injury to LB Drew Sanders.

Denver Broncos LB Drew Sanders (foot) suffered a tendon injury in his foot, and the ailment is expected to keep him sidelined for an extended period. He was carted off the practice field Saturday, July 26, and Sanders is not expected to return before the regular season opener Sept. 7. He and the team will decide on potential surgery in the next few days.

Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix spent several days with former NFL QB Drew Brees during the offseason, according to head coach Sean Payton.
Footballguys view: It's a great resource for Nix to have. He's entering his second year in the league with playoff expectations after a Wild Card appearance as a rookie. Brees will be able to get him insight nobody else can, and that could help the young passer along as he continues to develop in Sean Payton's system. |
Denver Broncos WR A.T. Perry (undisclosed) was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Sunday, July 20.
Footballguys view: Head coach Sean Payton told reporters during the Broncos minicamp practices that Perry would start camp on the PUP, so this is not a huge surprise. However, the fact that he is the only player to receive this designation is great news. Perry entered the league as a sixth-round pick out of Wake Forest with the Saints in 2023. After a year and a half in New Orleans, Perry joined Denver's practice squad. The 25-year-old receiver has appeared in 10 career games (with the Saints), hauling in 12 receptions for 246 yards and four touchdowns. |

Denver Broncos second-round draft choice RB RJ Harvey agreed to terms on a four-year contract with the Broncos Thursday, July 17, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Harvey was the team's second-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft, and he's there to be a big part of the offense. How large of a role will depend on his pass protection ability. With JK Dobbins on the roster, the Broncos will likely use both in an RBBC. Harvey could emerge as the primary back, but we'll need more information from camp and the preseason. Both are flex options for Fantasy GMs at this time. |
Updating an earlier report, Denver Broncos CB Jahdae Barron's rookie deal was for four years and worth $18,073,176. He received a signing bonus of $9,784,126.
Footballguys view: Barron was arguably the best corner in the 2025 NFL draft, and he's a versatile player who will compete to be the Broncos no.3 corner. A "star" at Texas (their version of 'rover' on defense), Barron is smart and can play in sub-packages at safety if need be. |
Denver Broncos first-round pick CB Jahdae Barron agreed to a four-year rookie deal Wednesday, July 16. Financial terms weren't disclosed, but all first-round picks receive a fifth-year option.
Link to storyDenver Broncos second round draft choice RB RJ Harvey has not signed his rookie contract as this point even though the Broncos rookies are scheduled to report for training camp Wednesday, July 16.
Footballguys view: Deals get done at deadlines, so we'll have to circle back here in the middle of next week. Harvey is expected to split time with JK Dobbins in the Broncos backfield. The rookie from UCF was a player the Broncos added in the second round, and HC Sean Payton is really excited about his potential. While Harvey is not Payton's new Alvin Kamara, he could at least perform similarly to the way Darren Sproles did with the Saints. That sort of role comes with flex appeal for Fantasy GMs. |
Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix said he has been talking a lot with TE Evan Engram this offseason and is excited to have him join the offense this season.
Footballguys view: We haven't even really seen the real Bo Nix, even though as a rookie he was outstanding down the stretch. Now, Nix gets more talent around him like a quality rushing attack, more receivers than just Courtland Sutton, and a real threat at tight end in Engram. While Engram may not produce like he used to, he's still an incredible upgrade who could catch around 69 passes for the Broncos in 2025. |

Denver Broncos DB Jahdae Barron is 'super smart' and 'asks the right questions,' according to S Brandon Jones.'(He's) super smart, I would say that is the first thing. Especially from a rookie. You always ask a lot of questions as a rookie, but he asks the right questions. (He is) very eager to learn, super athletic obviously. He's been a great addition. He's kind of like a Swiss army knife, he can play anywhere. It gives the defense a lot of freedom,' Jones said of Barron.

Denver Broncos WR Marvin Mims 'looks like the best candidate' to be the team's No. 2 receiver in 2025, according to Parker Gabriel of The Denver Post.
Footballguys view: Mims made an instant impact on special teams as a rookie, earning a Pro Bowl berth and second-team All-Pro selection as a returner in 2023. He did not have a large role on offense, but that changed during his second season. The 23-year-old speedster ended last season with 545 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns (a significant increase from his one offensive touchdown in 2023). He has emerged as an all-around weapon for Denver, and Mims continues to trend up going into Year 3. Mims is being drafted as WR61 in Round 13 this year. |
Denver Broncos WR Marvin Mims has been gaining confidence since he became more involved in the offense last season, according to offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi. Mims may receive more playing time on offense this upcoming season and will still be used as a returner.
Footballguys view: Mims came on at the end of the season and could be a breakout player this season. The Broncos wide receiver group is deep and varied, so Mims is the most valuable in a best ball league where inconsistency isn't as damaging to your weekly outcome. We'll be listening and watching to see if Mims is taking big steps forward in his third training camp as he competes with Troy Franklin, Devaughn Vele, and third round pick Pat Bryant for targets. |
Denver Broncos CB P.J. Locke (back) shared on YouTube that he is one of the first players to undergo spinal fusion surgery in his back. Locke shared a meeting with his surgeon, Dr. Chad Prusmack, on Feb. 10 after surgery. The degenerated discs in Locke's L4 and L5 vertebrae led to bone-on-bone, and Prusmack fused the spine with a 'cage' and screws. Five months later, Locke said he's pain free.

Denver Broncos WR Marvin Mims worked as one of the starting receivers during the offseason alongside WRs Courtland Sutton and Troy Franklin, per ESPN's Jeff Legwold, though what role he ends up in when the regular season starts 'remains to be seen.' Legwold adds the competition will be 'stiff' at receiver in camp with Mims, Franklin, Devaughn Vele, and rookie Pat Bryant all looking for a spot.
Footballguys view: Mims is not to be overlooked by Fantasy GMs based on what he did last year. He forced his way into the lineup because of his playmaking ability, and the Broncos began using Mims as a runner and receiver in the second half of the season. In addition to Pro Bowl returner ability (take note if your league scores special teams), Mims is a late-round 'what the heck' flex you can take a chance on with the upside to be more in 2025. |
Denver Broncos RB J.K. Dobbins will be needed to 'deliver a consistent presence in the backfield,' in the opinion of The Athletic's Nick Kosmider, who writes that Dobbins could be an 'every-down staple' for the offense.
Footballguys view: Dobbins posted nine touchdowns and more than 1,000 yards from scrimmage as he was the runner-up for Comeback Player of the Year honors with the Chargers in 2024. He ranked fourth in the NFL in percentage of rush attempts that resulted in a gain of at least 10 yards. Head coach Sean Payton said Dobbins' running balance and instincts stand out on film. There is competition in Denver. Rookie RJ Harvey will play a prominent role and the Broncos return four running backs who had carries last season: Audric Estime, Jaleel McLaughlin, Blake Watson, and Tyler Badie. |

Denver Broncos WR Troy Franklin was 'playing with a much greater awareness (this spring)' and showed off to offseason workouts 'a little thicker,' according to head coach Sean Payton. 'There's that (saying that) repetition is the mother of learning. You're seeing him play faster with a much greater awareness within each play. He's extremely explosive, and I think he's, I would say, five pounds heavier. A little thicker. He's had a good spring,' Payton told reporters last month.
Footballguys view: As USA Today pointed out, Marvin Mims made a significant leap on offense in his second year, and Payton believes Franklin could make a similar jump in 2025. "I think you're going to see those types of ascensions with players like Troy," Payton said. "There are a number of young players competing for not so much spots, but competing for touches. He's one of them." We'll see. Franklin is WR84 on the Footballguys projections, making him more of a late-round flier or waiver-wire watchlist candidate than a viable front-line player. |
Denver Broncos RB J.K. Dobbins' workload remains to be seen, according to head coach Sean Payton. 'Don't try to figure out the club right now,' Payton said. 'It's way too early.'
Footballguys view: This is a situation to monitor during training camp and the preseason. Dobbins will split time with rookie second-round pick RJ Harvey in the Broncos backfield. Who is the lead back? That's uncertain right now, but we could see Dobbins getting a majority of the work early in the season. As Harvey proves himself in pass protection, the electric rookie back could shoulder more of the load. This is a two-headed RBBC where value could vary as the season goes on, plus Dobbins has missed more games than he's played in his pro career. At this time, both backs are flex plays with upside in a Sean Payton offense as he looks for his new Mark Ingram/Alvin Kamara combination. |
J.K. Dobbins player page
Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix 21 touchdowns during the second half of the 2024 season compared to only eight touchdowns during the first eight games of the season.
Footballguys view: Four games into his rookie season, Nix had four interceptions and one touchdown (which he threw in Week 4). Then, Nix started to take hold of the Sean Payton offense. The two are a great fit for each other, and that's the secret in the NFL. Payton made sure to get more weapons around Nix in year two like TE Evan Engram, RB JK Dobbins, and rookie RB RJ Harvey and WR Pat Bryant. Nix had one of the best rookie seasons in NFL history after the slow start, and his future looks even brighter in 2025. He's a low-end QB1 with upside. |
Denver Broncos RB Audric Estime is expected to compete for the No. 3 role behind rookie RJ Harvey and veteran J.K. Dobbins, in the opinion of Broncos Wire's Jon Heath.
Footballguys view: Estime brings a different skill set to the table than Jaleel McLaughlin, likely the other back fighting for the RB3 role. Realistically, it's hard to imagine any having value behind Harvey and Dobbins. However, Estime and McLaughlin are both worth late-round draft picks, as an injury to a teammate could open the door for more opportunities. |
Denver Broncos RB RJ Harvey is 'doing well' in the receiving role, head coach Sean Payton told reporters Sunday, June 22. 'He's doing well. We haven't given him his Joker wings or any of that yet, but he's doing well,' Payton said.
Footballguys view: One of the few flaws on Harvey's profile was his ability as a pass-blocker. And to take the vaunted role as a pass-catching back for Sean Payton, he'll need to tighten that up. But Harvey has breakaway speed that no other backs in Denver possess. The allure of his athleticism in a pass-catching role makes him a worthy rookie to target early in drafts. |
Denver Broncos WR Marvin Mims will be used on kick and punt returns this upcoming season and is also expected to have a role in the offense.
Footballguys view: While Mims struggled to find his place on offense as a rookie in 2023, that started to change last year when he caught 39 passes for 503 yards and six touchdowns while rushing 13 times for 42 yards. With Mims playing at a high level on special teams, the Broncos will continue to use him on kickoffs and punt returns but expect him to play a greater role on offense as well. That doesn't make him a draft-worthy fantasy prospect, but he'll be a player to watch once the season starts. |
Denver Broncos RB Blake Watson (undisclosed) missed some time this offseason because of an undisclosed injury but is expected to be ready for the start of training camp.
