Broncos | Limited role for RJ Harvey? Fri Jun 13, 09:58 PM
Denver Broncos RB RJ Harvey could have a 'situational role' in the offense this season, according to Jeff Legwold of ESPN.com.
Link to storyFree-agent RB Cam Akers (Vikings) agreed to terms with the New Orleans Saints Friday, June 13, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Akers participated in the team's minicamp this week on a tryout basis. He joins Alvin Kamara, Kendre Miller, Devin Neal, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the running backs room. Akers, 25, spent last season with the Texans and Vikings. Between the two teams, he rushed for 444 yards and two touchdowns on 104 carries and added 14 catches for 68 yards and three touchdowns. Akers is unlikely to cut into Kamara's workload, but he could move into the rotation behind the starter. We'll watch for more when camp opens. |

New York Jets RB Breece Hall could be the 'No. 2 option' in the passing game, in the opinion of Zack Rosenblatt.
Footballguys view: Hall has fallen from the top five of 2024 drafts to the third round of 2025 drafts, largely because of the suggestion by head coach Aaron Glenn that there will be a three-headed backfield with Hall, Braelon Allen, and Isaiah Davis. He also said today that he was playing through a "pretty serious" knee injury last year, but one that did not require surgery. So it's possible we still haven't seen him return all the way to form after a 2022 ACL tear. If Hall can separate from the younger backs and become the clear lead back again, he could be one of the best picks of the draft, but if he doesn't, he might not even be startable. While this is an optimistic report, it might not be difficult to be the second option in the Jets passing game this year with lackluster options at wide receiver behind Garrett Wilson. |
Buffalo Bills RB James Cook said he hopes to receive a contract extension and wants to remain with the team for a long time. General manager Brandon Beane said he has talked with Cook several times this week and expects Cook to report for training camp.
Footballguys view: Cook showed up for OTAs, so we don't have to worry about a holdout here. His low RB1 value was based in part on a high touchdown rate, but he is being drafted as an RB2 and the Bills offense is still likely to be one of the highest scoring units in the league. Cook is a safe pick at his current ADP. |
Green Bay Packers RB MarShawn Lloyd played only one game last season due to multiple injuries but told reporters on Thursday, June 12, that he has been 100% for 'some time now.'
Footballguys view: Lloyd's health and performance in camp and the preseason will be a big part of sorting out who we need to target as the player who would benefit the most in fantasy leagues if Josh Jacobs misses times. Lloyd is the most talented, and the Packers liked him enough to take him in the third round last year. Emanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks both went undrafted when they entered the league, but they performed well for the team down the stretch last year and complement each other well, with Brooks playing on passing downs. The Packers might be forced to keep four backs, and if they don't expect whomever they release to be claimed on waivers before Week 1. |
New York Jets RB Breece Hall revealed to reporters during mandatory minicamp that he played through a 'pretty serious' knee injury during the 2024 season. He added that he feels fine now and did not need to undergo surgery to correct it.
Link to storyLas Vegas Raiders RB Ashton Jeanty won't be the only running back the team relies on, according to head coach Pete Carroll. 'I love having multiple guys play,' Carroll said. 'I'm not relying on one guy, you know.' Asked how the carries would be divvied up, Carroll said the RBs would make the decision with their play.
Link to storyArizona Cardinals RB Trey Benson told the team's website that he added seven pounds of muscle since last season. He also noted that he explosiveness metrics have improved noticeably.
Footballguys view: Benson is a powerful player who wins at the point of contact and keeps his feet moving to pick up more yards. The Cardinals have James Conner as their lead back, but HC Jonathan Gannon said if Benson takes the jump from year 1 to year 2 "I think we have two starting backs." |
Los Angeles Chargers RB Omarion Hampton was called the 'total package' by offensive coordinator Greg Roman. 'You don't see a lot of guys find a hole like he's doing right now,' Roman said.
Footballguys view: Hampton is a player who can play on all three downs. He's a powerful runner with a smooth stride, and Hampton can wear down a defense as the game goes on. In addition to what he can do as a runner, Hampton is a good receiver out of the backfield. We'll see how it unfolds this year with Hampton splitting time with Najee Harris. |
San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (Achilles, knee) participated in every phase of voluntary OTAs and the mandatory minicamp, and he even took reps during team drills, which was rare among the team's established stars, per ESPN's Nick Wagoner.
Footballguys view: Good news for the 49ers here. Everyone knows McCaffrey is a stud who can be the best back in the league when healthy. It's that staying healthy part that is unknown. McCaffrey says he feels 'great' after being dogged by injuries in 2024. |

Free-agent RB JaMycal Hasty (Patriots) recently worked out for the Houston Texans, according to a source.
Link to storyJaMycal Hasty player page
Updating a previous report, Houston Texans RB Joe Mixon (undisclosed) is no longer wearing a walking boot but is now wearing an ankle brace, according to sources. He seems to have a good chance to be ready for training camp.
Footballguys view: A prudent approach in June shouldn't set off alarm bells. In Mixon's case, the injury is of much less concern than Nick Chubb signing with the team last week. Mixon was a revelation for the Texans in 2024, but Chubb's arrival indicates the team is at least open to the idea of getting other runners involved. As USA Today notes, the problem last year was they sorely lacked the personnel to do so. At the very least, Chubb is an upgrade to Mixon's understudies from last season, and depth matters. We'll be watching this backfield closely in training camp. |
Joe Mixon player page
Buffalo Bills RB Ty Johnson (undisclosed) was present for practice Tuesday, June 10, but did not participate in any drills.
Footballguys view: As SI.com recently reminded readers, the Bills used Johnson as a scheme player in some matchups last season, leading to some big plays and touchdowns. He beat the Lions with five catches for 114 yards in Week 5 while also surprising in two other matchups (46 combined yards with a touchdown and three catches and 70 combined yards with a score and two catches). But in his other 17 games, Johnson had 283 yards with two touchdowns and 12 catches. That inconsistent week-to-week output limits his fantasy relevance. |

Seattle Seahawks RB Kenneth Walker III (ankle) has been limited at practice due to an ankle injury, head coach Mike MacDonald told reporters Tuesday, June 10.
Footballguys view: As SBNation's Mookie Alexander reminded readers, Walker's injury-riddled 2024 season ended on IR after suffering an ankle injury against the Vikings. He also dealt with calf and oblique injuries that resulted in missed time earlier in the year. With just 11 games played, Walker had a career-low 573 rushing yards and no carries longer than 28 yards. Given that context, Walker missing time isn't ideal. Also, it's June. We'll revisit this issue when the Seahawks open training camp. In the meantime, Zach Charbonnet, Kenny McIntosh, rookie Damien Martinez, and 2024 UDFA George Holani will get more turns in minicamp. |
Buffalo Bills RB James Cook is attending minicamp Tuesday, June 10, but it's unclear if he'll participate as he seeks a new contract.
Footballguys view: Cook did not attend the team's voluntary portion of the offseason program. But the fact that he's in attendance for minicamp could be a positive sign of negotiations, even if Cook doesn't do much on the field. A second-round pick in 2022, Cook is entering the final year of his rookie contract. He has rushed for 1,000 yards in each of the last two seasons and led the league with 16 rushing TDs in 2024. Cook's RB14 Average Draft Position and the associated late-third-round price aren't far off his RB11 finish last season. |
Free-agent RB Cam Akers (Vikings) will be participating in the New Orleans Saints mandatory minicamp this week on a tryout basis, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The Saints have Kendre Miller, Devin Neal, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire behind Alvin Kamara at the position. Akers, 25, spent last season with the Texans and Vikings. Between the two teams, he rushed for 444 yards and two touchdowns on 104 carries and added 14 catches for 68 yards and three touchdowns. The Rams made Akers a second-round pick in 2020, and he played in Los Angeles until the team traded him to the Vikings during the 2023 season. He signed with the Texans last offseason, and Houston traded him to Minnesota on Oct. 15. |

Tennessee Titans RB Kalel Mullings (undisclosed) was been limited during voluntary workouts but may be moving closer to full participation, in the opinion of TitansWire's Mike Mihalko.
Link to storyFree-agent RB Nick Chubb (Browns) reportedly passed his physical with the Houston Texans on Monday, June 9, which was reportedly the only potential obstacle keeping him from signing with the team.
Footballguys view: Chubb, a second-round pick in the 2018 draft, spent his first seven seasons with the Browns. He served as a true workhorse for Cleveland over five seasons, rushing for over 1,000 yards in all but his rookie season (when he finished with 996) and scoring eight or more total touchdowns each of his first five seasons. But his last two years were marred by season-ending injuries. Now, it appears Chubb will get a fresh start in a Texans backfield that features Joe Mixon, Dameon Pierce, rookie Woody Marks, and Dare Ogunbowale. |

Miami Dolphins RB Jaylen Wright told reporters on Monday, June 9, that he added six pounds to his frame and 'lost a lot of body fat' while gaining 'a lot of muscle' this offseason after dedicating himself to getting in and staying in shape.'Just working hard in the offseason, working on my body. I probably added about six pounds. I lost a lot of body fat. I gained a lot of muscle. That's why it might look like I'm a little bigger, but yeah, just offseason, working hard, focusing on my body, getting prepared for the season,' Wright said.
Link to storyFree-agent RB Nick Chubb (Browns) is receiving interest from the Houston Texans, and Chubb is believed to be interested in joining the team, according to ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler.

Buffalo Bills RB James Cook is at a stalemate with the team in terms of a new contract, and it's unclear whether he will be present at mandatory minicamp, according to sources Saturday, June 7.
Footballguys view: Next week, we'll all be checking the attendance in Buffalo to see if Cook shows up for mandatory work. Cook can be fined over $100,000 if he does not report for mandatory minicamp. Deals get done at deadlines, and we feel something does get done before the start of the regular season. Right now, things may seem dire but it can all be smoothed over with a new contract that is mutually beneficial. Cook said a few months ago that he wants $15 million per year, but he's on the books to make $5.7 million in 2024. Stay tuned. |
New York Giants RB Devin Singletary likely will be the leading candidate for the No. 2 running back job, but RB Cam Skattebo has a chance to earn the role if he performs well during training camp and the preseason, in the opinion of SNY's Alex Smith.
Footballguys view: Singletary has the veteran experience behind Tyrone Tracy, but Skattebo is a different type of runner. The rookie from Arizona State is bulky and can live between the tackles as a power back. In addition to what he can do as a runner, Skattebo has good hands and can be relied on in pass protection. A third-down role and short-yardage role might be what Skattebo earns in training camp and the preseason. The size of that role will determine the impact it has on Tracy's fantasy value. |
Free-agent RB J.K. Dobbins (Chargers) had a positive meeting with the Denver Broncos, but the two sides are not close to a contract at this point, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Dobbins gets interest from the Broncos, and they could circle back come training camp. Right now, Dobbins has few suitors but that could change with an injury. The Broncos like him at a certain price for the time being, and they didn't feel the urgency to make something happen before next week's mandatory minicamp. Right now, rookie RJ Harvey should be the lead for the Broncos with someone like Audric Estime or Jaleel McLaughlin (or Tyler Badie) as the top reserve back. Sean Payton wants to use a two-back system, and right now we don't know who that second player is. |
J.K. Dobbins player page
New York Jets RB Isaiah Davis averaged 5.8 yards per carry during the 2024 season on 30 carries and recorded eight runs of at least 10 yards during the season.
Footballguys view: Davis is a player we've stashed in deep dynasty leagues. The Jets no.3 back behind Breece Hall and Braelon Allen, Davis is a grinder who is tough to bring down when he builds a head of steam. While not a big-play threat, Davis can consistently be someone who picks up positive yardage in a reserve role. We'd be curious (and excited) to see what he could do if ever tasked with a larger responsibility. Thus, Davis remains a deep dynasty darling. |
Former Jacksonville Jaguars RB Keilan Robinson was claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Eagles Friday, June 6, according to a source.
Link to storyDenver Broncos RB Blake Watson (undisclosed) was present for the offseason workout Thursday, June 5, but did not participate in any drills.
Link to storyChicago Bears TE Joel Wilson and RB Kyle Monangai were identified by head coach Ben Johnson as two of the players who have stood out on offense this spring.
Footballguys view: Let's put a pin in this news item and circle back when the Bears are in training camp and the preseason. During OTAs, Fantasy GMs should be listening for 'drum beats' of information. This one is loud and clear coming from Johnson. Manangai is the no.3 back behind D'Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson. Wilson is the competing for a roster spot in the tight end room behind Cole Kmet and Colston Loveland. |
Detroit Lions WR Jameson Williams, RB Jahmyr Gibbs and TE Sam LaPorta are a few of the players who have stood out the most to head coach Dan Campbell this spring.
Footballguys view: These are players we should expect to stand out at OTAs. Williams is coming off a career year in 2024, and he could post even better numbers this year. Gibbs is a stud running back who stars as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. LaPorta is a playmaker tight end who could finish in the top-5 at his position. We love the update from coach Campbell, but everyone pretty much knows these guys will be stand out players in 2025. |

Los Angeles Rams RB Blake Corum (forearm) has been participating in drills during the first week of OTAs.
Link to storyMinnesota Vikings RB Jordan Mason (ankle) participated in drills during OTAs Wednesday, June 4.
Footballguys view: Vikings HC Kevin O'Connell said Mason will complement starting RB Aaron Jones as a "1b" in the backfield. Mason has talent, but his 2024 season with the 49ers was cut short because of this ankle problem. It's a good sign Mason is out there in OTAs, and we're excited about his upside as an RB3/flex option in 2025. |
Dallas Cowboys RB Javonte Williams will likely be 'strictly in a rotational role' this season, in the opinion of ESPN's Bill Barnwell, who adds that there's a 'slim-but-plausible chance' that Williams doesn't even make the 53-man roster out of camp. Williams signed a one-year, $3 million deal with Dallas, but only $1 million of that is guaranteed.
Footballguys view: Williams has not looked the same since a major knee injury in his second year (2022) with the Broncos. Now with the Cowboys, Williams is the lead back but in a room with Miles Sanders and Jaydon Blue. In an RBBC that could be a three-headed unit, Williams is looking more like an RB4/deep flex option for a fantasy perspective in 2025. |
Javonte Williams player page
Chicago Bears RB D'Andre Swift has been working with running backs coach Eric Bieniemy to avoid negative runs that result from him trying to do to much.
Footballguys view: Swift has a tendency to dance behind the line of scrimmage, and that's not what the team needs. Bieniemy is a seasoned running back coach, so Swift should be listening intently to what he's being coached to do. Swift is coming off a career-low 3.8 yards per carry in 2024. We could see him approaching the 1,000-yard mark this year with around 35 catches as the Bears lead back. That makes Swift an RB2 with upside for Fantasy GMs out there. |
D'Andre Swift player page
Los Angeles Chargers RB Najee Harris has ranked second to last in cumulative rushing EPA (Expected Points Added) since he entered the NFL in 2021, per ESPN's Bill Barnwell, who writes that Harris could be more productive in his new role as LA presents a better situation than the one he had during his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Footballguys view: The Chargers have both Harris and rookie first-round pick Omarion Hampton to soften up defenses in 2025. Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh said he plans to deploy Harris and Hampton as a "1-2 punch." A four-time 1,000-yard rusher, Harris is a power back who can live between the tackles. His numbers could be more efficient this year with his new team because he's splitting time in the backfield with Hampton. |
Najee Harris player page
Houston Texans RB Joe Mixon (undisclosed) did not participate in the offseason workout Tuesday, June 3, but is expected to be ready for training camp, according to a source. Mixon has been wearing a walking boot this offseason, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Mixon has been an observer for most of the team's OTAs, but again, there isn't any concern about his availability for training camp. Mixon finished 2023, his first season with the Texans, as RB10. He is being drafted as RB16 with the 51st pick overall in early best balls. |
Joe Mixon player page
Free-agent RB J.K. Dobbins (Chargers) is scheduled have dinner with the Denver Broncos coaches Wednesday, June 4, and will visit the team's facility Thursday, June 5, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The Broncos have five RBs on the roster: Jaleel McLaughlin, Audric Estime, Tyler Badie, Blake Watson, and rookie RJ Harvey, who is expected to be the starter. Dobbins had a career-high 905 rushing yards in 13 games in his only season as a Charger. Los Angeles applied the rarely-used unrestricted free agent tender to Dobbins in April, extending the window for his departure to count toward the compensatory pick formula for both the Chargers and his new team. As Profootballtalk.com notes, Dobbins has played well when healthy, but injuries have kept him from fully realizing his potential. |
J.K. Dobbins player page
New England Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson said he is very comfortable with the offensive playbook because offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was with the Patriots when he was a rookie.
Footballguys view: Stevenson rushed for 606 yards with five touchdowns during that rookie campaign. He averaged 4.6 yards per carry. Stevenson might still have his spot atop the team's running back depth chart, but New England drafted TreVeyon Henderson in the second round of April's NFL Draft. More action for Henderson would mean less for Stevenson, who rushed for 801 yards and a career-high seven touchdowns for the Patriots over 15 games in 2024. Fantasy investors are drafting that way. Henderson is RB28 on the Footballguys Projections. Stevenson is RB37. |
Rhamondre Stevenson player page
Buffalo Bills RB James Cook was not present for the offseason workout Tuesday, June 3.
Footballguys view: Cook has made his desire for a new contract clear, but the Bills don't appear to have budged, even after his second straight 1,000-yard season, in which he averaged nearly five yards per carry and rushed for a league-high 16 touchdowns. So, Cook is staying away from voluntary OTAs. His absence will continue to draw attention, but at this point, there's no reason to believe Cook won't be on the field for the regular season. |
Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jaylen Warren said he is ready to take on a large role in the offense but does not expected his role to significantly increase since RBs Kaleb Johnson and Kenneth Gainwell are on the roster.
Footballguys view: Warren still projects as the lead running back, but sharing with Johnson and Gainwell is baked into Warren's RB27 Footballguys Projection. But even at that, Johnson's RB33 spot and lower average draft position makes him appealing. Both are reasonably priced depth options at the position. |
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Keilan Robinson was released Wednesday, June 4, according to a source.

Minnesota Vikings RB Jordan Mason finished third in the NFL behind only Baltimore Ravens RB Derrick Henry and Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley in a Next Gen Stats metric designed to 'assess the degree to which running backs generate more yards than expected,' per The Athletic's Alec Lewis.
Footballguys view: The Vikings traded for Mason, who ran for 100 yards on 20 carries against them in Minnesota last season, in March. They made the deal a week after signing Aaron Jones to a lucrative, two-year $20 million extension with $13 million guaranteed. While it's safe to assume the Vikings still see Jones as their lead back after a strong 2024 season, fantasy drafters in early best balls don't see much of a gap between the two. Jones is being drafted as RB28 in Round 7; Mason is going as RB32 in Round 9. |
Baltimore Ravens RB Keaton Mitchell said his knee is feeling as good as it did before he suffered his torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Footballguys view: Mitchell, who averaged 8.4 yards per carry on 47 runs in his rookie year, has been impressive in early workouts. With Derrick Henry leading the way and Justice Hill coming off a career year, there aren't too many more offensive snaps for other running backs in Baltimore. But Mitchell has proven he doesn't need too many snaps to make a significant impact with his big-play ability. He could have an immediate impact in the return game, as he averaged 31.2 yards on his five returns last season. |
Keaton Mitchell player page
New York Jets RB Braelon Allen could have a 'pretty significant' role in the offense this season, according to SI.com's Albert Breer.
Footballguys view: Breece Hall heads into training camp as the clear-cut RB1. But after a breakout 2023 season, Hall's numbers started to decline in 2024, and head coach Aaron Glenn made it clear that Allen and Isaiah Davis will be factors this year. Glenn and OC Tanner Engstrand come from a Detroit team that found plenty of opportunities for two running backs to succeed (Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery). The team is also transitioning to quarterback Justin Fields under center, which adds another threat to the running game that will take defensive attention away from Allen. |
Tennessee Titans RB Micah Bernard was released on Monday, June 2.
Link to storyJacksonville Jaguars RB Travis Etienne 'has done everything we have asked him to do and more,' according to head coach Liam Coen on Monday, June 2.
Footballguys view: Etienne missed his rookie season with a Lisfranc injury but had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons before rushing 150 times for 558 yards and two touchdowns last season. The Jaguars also have Tank Bigsby back along with fourth-rounder Bhayshul Tuten and seventh-rounder LeQuint Allen. Etienne, projected to finish as RB35, is our top fantasy prospect in this backfield. |
Travis Etienne Jr. player page
Free-agent RB Tyrion Davis-Price (Eagles) signed a two-year deal with the Tennessee Titans Monday, June 2. Financial terms weren't disclosed.
Footballguys view: While this signing seems inconsequential on the surface, it comes shortly after head coach Brian Callahan talked about using more of an "even split" with Tony Pollard, Tyjae Spears, and a third back in 2025. Veteran Julius Chestnut and rookie Kalel Mullings, a sixth-round pick in last month's NFL Draft, are also on the roster. Davis-Price, a 2022 third-round pick by the 49ers, will join the competition to be that third back. |
Kansas City Chiefs RB Isiah Pacheco said he added muscle this offseason and is back up to 216 pounds.
Footballguys view: Pacheco started last season with 15 carries in Week 1 and 19 carries in Week 2 before suffering a broken leg. Upon his return, he never eclipsed 14 rushing attempts, and he amassed just 175 yards with no scores over his final five regular-season games. Pacheco's explosiveness and efficiency were stunted, and the Chiefs noticed. The team didn't hand off to him more than five times in any of its three playoff games. If a bulked-up Pacheco can regain past momentum, his current RB29 ADP will be a great value. |
Washington Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr. has been very focused during offseason workouts, according to offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.
Footballguys view: It is a contract year for Robinson, taken in the third round by Washington in the 2022 draft, and Commanders GM Adam Peters drafted a running back (Jacory Croskey-Merritt) to compete for a roster spot. Kingsbury might also want to offer some runs to rookie Jaylin Lane or Deebo Samuel, both primarily receivers, but they've proven they can run the ball. The questions surrounding Robinson's fade last year and how much of it was injury will no doubt have Kingsbury looking very closely at his running backs room in 2025. He loves the acquisition of Samuel and the diversity he can bring to the offense. |

Cleveland Browns RB Jerome Ford was the first running back on the field during drills Wednesday, May 28.
Footballguys view: Ford is the veteran of the group, but rookie second-round pick Quinshon Judkins should emerge as the lead back for the Browns this year. In early May, Ford reworked his contract and likely has a spot locked up on the 53-man roster. Judkins has plenty of power and speed to his game, but Ford provides a nice change-of-pace option. We'll see how the room shapes up in training camp. |
