Texans | Nico Collins poised for second-year breakout?    Mon Jun 27, 02:21 PM

Houston Texans WR Nico Collins has a 'good grasp of this offense' and 'his talent is off the charts,' according to quarterback Davis Mills, who added the second-year receiver is a player that Houston needs to 'find ways to get the ball.'

Footballguys view: Collins certainly had flashes during his rookie campaign, catching 33 passes for 446 yards and one touchdown. This year, any sort of 'breakout' could include him pushing for 50 or so catches with around 650 yards and a few touchdowns. That's not incredible fantasy value, but Collins is a player we do appreciate in deep dynasty formats where we can continue watching his career grow. He's got a good connection with Mills, and that should help him continue to be an important part of the Texans offense.

Texans | Houston to feed John Metchie?    Thu Jun 23, 10:00 PM

Houston Texans WR John Metchie (knee) 'can create his own yards once he gets the ball in his hands,' according to offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton.

Footballguys view: Metchie is coming back from the knee injury he suffered in the SEC Championship last year. He's a refined route runner who has the skill set of a quality no.2 receiver when healthy. We'll see how the rookie mixes in with Brandin Cooks as the Texans no.1 receiver.

Texans | Dameon Pierce has good shot to lead backfield    Tue Jun 21, 02:42 PM

Houston Texans RB Dameon Pierce should have 'plenty of opportunities to take the lead back spot by the end of the season,' according to ESPN.com's Sarah Barshop.

Footballguys view: Many reports indicate the team could lean on Marlon Mack to begin the regular season. However, those same reports indicate that Pierce has been impressive this offseason and the rookie could take over as the season goes on. Keep this in mind when you're drafting and want a late-round flier on Pierce. RB55 (12.10) is his current ADP in 12-team PPR formats.

Texans | To Lean on RB Mack Early On?    Mon Jun 20, 03:47 PM

Aaron Reiss, from The Athletic, reports the Houston Texans could lean on RB Marlon Mack early in the season.

Footballguys view: Mack is the seasoned veteran in the Texans backfield, but rookie Dameon Pierce is going to push for playing time. Pierce could be one of those players who is a better pro than he was a collegian - and he flashed during his time at Florida (and at the Senior Bowl). Fantasy GMs are drafting Mack (RB53) and Pierce (RB55) around the same time (12th round) as they wait to see how this situation shakes out.

Texans | Davis Mills 'a lot further along'    Sat Jun 18, 01:19 PM

Houston Texans QB Davis Mills is 'a lot further along' from where he was a year ago, general manager Nick Caserio said on Thursday, June 16. 'Overall I would say from where he was, call it a year ago, to where he is now, he's certainly a lot further along,' Caserio said. 'So, I think the preseason and the training camp will be another opportunity, not only for him, but the whole team to see if we can kind of build on some of the things that we've done here over the last however many weeks it's been.'

Footballguys view: Mills was in for 13 games as a rookie, and he passed for 2,664 yards with 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Looking closer at his rookie stats, Mills had four games of 300-plus yards passing and five games where he had multiple touchdowns. The Texans are building around him, and he's the unquestioned starter this season. If he makes another step forward in his career, Mills could continue as the starter in 2023.

Houston Texans WR Daesean Hamilton (knee) is scheduled to undergo surgery Wednesday, June 8, on the knee he injured during practice Tuesday, June 7, according to sources.

Footballguys view: He hasn't played since 2020, and injuries have hampered him throughout his pro career. He did not suffer a torn anterior cruciate ligament and is expected to return at some point this year.

Texans | Justin Britt leaves practice    Tue Jun 7, 05:04 PM

Texans | DaeSean Hamilton carted off with injury    Tue Jun 7, 11:14 AM

Houston Texans WR DaeSean Hamilton (knee) went down with an apparent right knee injury Tuesday, June 7, at minicamp. Trainers examined his knee on the field, and he had to get helped to the cart to leave practice.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick (Penn State) in the 2018 NFL draft, Hamilton couldn't stay healthy and never did much during his time with the Broncos. The Texans signed him a couple of months ago after Hamilton missed all of the 2021 season and now he's hurt again. This could be it for the veteran receiver.

Texans | John Metchie ahead of schedule    Fri Jun 3, 10:57 PM

Houston Texans WR John Metchie (knee) is ahead of schedule in his recovery from knee surgery.

Footballguys view: That's good news for the rookie receiver. Metchie injured his knee in the SEC Championship Game last year and has been recovering since then. He is a fantastic route runner and the type of technician you normally don't see from a college receiver. He has already earned praise from WR Brandin Cooks, and Metchie should work as the no.2 receiver for the Texans when healthy. The expectation is that he'll be out there practicing during training camp.

Texans | Fabian Moreau to Texans    Tue May 31, 08:41 AM

Free-agent CB Fabian Moreau (Falcons) agreed to an undisclosed deal with the Houston Texans Tuesday, May 31.

Footballguys view: Moreau started 16 games for the Falcons last year, but they didn't think enough of him to bring him back, choosing to sign Casey Hayward in free agency instead. The Texans are going with #3 overall pick Derek Stingley Jr. and free agent Steven Nelson starting outside and Desmond King and Tavierre Thomas vying for subpackage playing time, so Moreau will probably be injury depth if he makes the team.

Texans | HOU believes in Davis Mills    Sat May 28, 12:41 PM

Houston Texans QB Davis Mills has the faith of his head coach, Lovie Smith. 'It's been documented on what I think of Davis. I think he's going to be an excellent quarterback in the NFL for a lot of years,' Smith said. 'Every day we've opened up the building, [Mills has] been in here. He's our quarterback. When you're the leader, you've got to be visible,'

Footballguys view: The Texans have built around Mills instead of looking for his replacement this offseason. He'll get the 2022 season to prove himself as a starter, or else the Texans will be in the market for a quarterback next offseason.

Texans | Derek Stingley Jr. limited at OTAs    Thu May 26, 09:25 PM

Houston Texans CB Derek Stingley Jr. (foot) has been limited to individual drills during OTAs.

Footballguys view: Stingley was the crown jewel of this rebuilding draft for the Texans. He is expected to be their instant #1 corner. Stingley had one of the best true freshman seasons in college football history in 2019, but struggled with injuries in 2020 and 2021, including a lis franc injury last year. He was healthy enough to run a 4.37 40 at his pro day earlier this spring, but the team is being extremely cautious with their franchise defensive player.

Texans | John Metchie praised by Brandin Cooks    Tue May 24, 10:13 PM

Houston Texans WR John Metchie is getting high praise from fellow WR Brandin Cooks. 'That kid's special,' Cooks said. 'You can just tell it. You know when you talk with someone, you just get that feel about a guy; the way that he goes about his business.'

Footballguys view: Metchie is a seasoned route runner, something you don't see from many rookie receivers when they come into the NFL. Cooks has bounced around the league and played with some of the best in the game. Praise from a guy like him, a talented receiver in his own right, means something. Metchie suffered an ACL injury in the SEC Championship Game last year, but most reports indicate he'll be ready before the start of the regular season.

Texans | Derek Stingley Jr. not quite ready to go    Mon May 23, 02:35 PM

Houston Texans CB Derek Stingley Jr. 'has some work to do in terms of being ready to go for training camp,' according to general manager Nick Caserio.'Really, he played three or four games there with a (Lisfranc injury last in college) and he wasn't really healthy. So, (it) kind of speaks to his competitiveness and his toughness. And then he was able to get out there in the spring and show that he's at least making some progress. I'd say he's got some work to do in terms of being ready to go for camp,' Caserio told Sports Radio 610 on Monday, May 23.

Texans | Dameon Pierce could have big role in 2022    Sun May 15, 06:11 PM

Houston Texans RB Dameon Pierce could take over as the team's every-down back in 2022, Mark Lane of Texans Wire speculates.

Footballguys view: Pierce doesn't have much ahead of him on the Texans depth chart. Marlon Mack and Rex Burkhead are experienced, but neither one could hold off Pierce if the rookie plays up to his potential. He was in a backfield rotation at Florida, so Pierce has low miles on the tires. Pierce is capable of handling a large workload, and he can play on special teams while he waits for his opportunity in the pros. Let's see what he can do in the preseason and training camp.

Texans | Kenyon Green agrees to rookie deal    Sun May 15, 02:10 PM

Texans | John Metchie agrees to terms    Sat May 14, 04:06 PM

Houston Texans second-round draft choice WR John Metchie agreed to terms on a four-year contract with the Texans Friday, May 13, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Metchie has a ton of talent as a route runner, and can be moved around the formation to attack a defense. He's coming back from the ACL injury he suffered in the SEC Championship Game, so the Texans should ease him back into action during training camp. When healthy, Metchie has the skill to be a 'what the heck' flex as a rookie in 2022.

Texans | John Metchie's timeline uncertain    Fri May 13, 04:33 PM

Houston Texans second-round draft choice John Metchie (Alabama) is expected to return from his torn anterior cruciate ligament at some point during the 2022 season, but head coach Lovie Smith admitted Friday, May 13, that the team is still 'in the process' of finding out where he is in his recovery.

Footballguys view: Metchie was injured in the SEC Championship Game and has been recovering since then. He knows how to get open and find soft spots in a zone, so Metchie could be a nice no.2 receiver in the NFL when healthy. Smith noted the Texans expect to have a better idea about Metchie's recovery in a couple of weeks.

Texans | Derek Stingley Jr. signs rookie pact    Fri May 13, 10:17 AM

Texans | Teagan Quitoriano under contract    Thu May 12, 05:31 PM

Houston Texans fifth-round draft choice TE Teagan Quitoriano agreed to terms on a four-year contract with the Texans Thursday, May 12, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Texans might have something here with Quitoriano. He didn't do much in college at Oregon State, so his stats won't blow you away. However, he was underutilized as a pass-catcher in college and could surprise some in the NFL. Quitoriano is a "Y" tight end who set Oregon basketball records in high school. Keep an eye on him but only in super deep dynasty formats.

Texans | Houston, Thomas Booker reach agreement    Thu May 12, 05:29 PM

Texans | Dameon Pierce agrees to terms    Thu May 12, 05:15 PM

Houston Texans fourth-round draft choice RB Dameon Pierce agreed to terms on a four-year contract with the Texans Thursday, May 12, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: All Fantasy GMs need to be monitoring Pierce in training camp and the preseason. He's a talented runner, and a competitive player on all three downs. Pierce looked good at the Senior Bowl earlier this year, and he's got the skill to be a starting back in the NFL. There's not much in front of him on the Texans depth chart (Marlon Mack, Rex Burkhead), so Pierce could end up with a larger-than-some-expect role in 2022.
