Texans | Jimmie Ward in trouble with the law Fri Jun 13, 02:56 PM
Houston Texans DB Jimmie Ward is facing a felony assault family violence charge following an incident at his home on Thursday, June 12.
Footballguys view: As we've seen in recent years, the NFL prefers to wait to suspend players for off-field incidents until after the legal system has concluded its process, which can take years. Ward opened last season as a starter for the Texans, but missed almost half of the season and the playoffs. The team traded for Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and has Calen Bullock and Jalen Pitre youthfully ascending at safety, so Ward is not essential if he does have to sit out at some point in 2025 because of this. |

Houston Texans WR Jayden Higgins has been impressive in minicamp and is 'pushing for a starting role,' according to ESPN's DJ Bien-Aime, who adds that the rookie 'could clinch that spot by the second week of training camp.'
Footballguys view: Nico Collins is the WR1 for the Texans, and veteran Christian Kirk is there to be the no.2 receiver for now. Set to hit free agency in 2026, Kirk is not a long-term option for the Texans. That means Higgins, with his impressive size/speed combination, could get more involved as the season goes on. |
Free-agent RB JaMycal Hasty (Patriots) recently worked out for the Houston Texans, according to a source.

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans RB Joe Mixon (undisclosed) is no longer wearing a walking boot but is now wearing an ankle brace, according to sources. He seems to have a good chance to be ready for training camp.
Footballguys view: A prudent approach in June shouldn't set off alarm bells. In Mixon's case, the injury is of much less concern than Nick Chubb signing with the team last week. Mixon was a revelation for the Texans in 2024, but Chubb's arrival indicates the team is at least open to the idea of getting other runners involved. As USA Today notes, the problem last year was they sorely lacked the personnel to do so. At the very least, Chubb is an upgrade to Mixon's understudies from last season, and depth matters. We'll be watching this backfield closely in training camp. |

Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud (shoulder) is throwing at minicamp Tuesday, June 10.
Footballguys view: Stroud was limited in recent OTA sessions due to a tight pectoral muscle, an issue that was characterized as "relatively minor" last week. Stoud throwing during today's session suggests that's the case. Stroud is going as QB16 in Round 10 in early best ball drafts. While his Footballguys QB20 projection isn't as optimistic, that price might be appealing to those taking a shot on a QB2 who delivered QB1 numbers just two years ago. |

RB Nick Chubb has now passed his physical and signed with Houston, sources say. The former Browns Pro Bowler agreed to terms over the weekend and is getting a 1-year, $2.5M deal that can be worth up to $5M.
Footballguys view: As previously noted, Chubb will join a Texans backfield that features Joe Mixon, Dameon Pierce, rookie Woody Marks, and Dare Ogunbowale. This development will almost certainly drive Mixon's RB15 Average Draft Position down, and Chubb's RB61 spot might rise some. Mixon remains a solid RB2 until further notice, while Chubb becomes a more interesting flier now that we know his destination. |

Free-agent RB Nick Chubb (Browns) reportedly passed his physical with the Houston Texans on Monday, June 9, which was reportedly the only potential obstacle keeping him from signing with the team.
Footballguys view: Chubb, a second-round pick in the 2018 draft, spent his first seven seasons with the Browns. He served as a true workhorse for Cleveland over five seasons, rushing for over 1,000 yards in all but his rookie season (when he finished with 996) and scoring eight or more total touchdowns each of his first five seasons. But his last two years were marred by season-ending injuries. Now, it appears Chubb will get a fresh start in a Texans backfield that features Joe Mixon, Dameon Pierce, rookie Woody Marks, and Dare Ogunbowale. |
Nick Chubb player page
Sources tell NFL Network's Ian Rapoport that Browns free-agent RB Nick Chubb, one of the most decorated players available, is expected to sign with the Texans on Monday if all goes well with his physical.
Footballguys view: The Texans have Joe Mixon, Dameon Pierce, Woody Marks, and Dare Ogunbowale at the top of their depth chart at the position. Both Mixon and Pierce missed time with injuries last season. Chubb, 29, has played only 10 games the past two seasons. A horrific knee injury in Week 2 of the 2023 season kept him out until Week 7 of the 2024 season. Chubb played eight games last season before breaking his foot. We'll follow up when an official move is made, but this will put a damper on Mixon's Footballguys RB15 projection. |

Houston Texans RB Joe Mixon (undisclosed) did not participate in the offseason workout Tuesday, June 3, but is expected to be ready for training camp, according to a source. Mixon has been wearing a walking boot this offseason, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Mixon has been an observer for most of the team's OTAs, but again, there isn't any concern about his availability for training camp. Mixon finished 2023, his first season with the Texans, as RB10. He is being drafted as RB16 with the 51st pick overall in early best balls. |

Houston Texans TE Dalton Schultz (undisclosed) participated on the offseason workout Tuesday, June 3, after missing time last week.
Footballguys view: Schultz was reportedly moving well and caught a touchdown pass during Tuesday's session. Before last year, Schultz was widely regarded as a strength for Houston, essentially serving as the fourth option in the aerial attack. However, a disappointing 2024 shoved Schultz off the fantasy radar. He's being drafted as TE27 this offseason. |

Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud (shoulder) has taken limited reps during the team's offseason practices, but head coach DeMeco Ryans noted on Tuesday, June 3, that Stroud is just experiencing 'general soreness' in his shoulder and the team is taking 'extra precaution' with him.
Footballguys view: Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, a well-connected Houston beat writer, recently confirmed the issue was a tight pectoral muscle that is considered "relatively minor." Meanwhile, we'll remind you that few quarterbacks fell further from meeting expectations than Stroud, who was drafted as QB6 last summer before finishing the regular season as QB18. This year, Stroud is going as QB16 in Round 10 in early best ball drafts. That's a bit off his QB20 Footballguys Projection, but it's a reasonable price for bargain hunters willing to bet minimal draft capital on a QB2 who delivered QB1 numbers just two years ago. |

Houston Texans LB Christian Harris (undisclosed) should be ready to participate when training camp begins, according to defensive coordinator Matt Burke.
Link to storyHouston Texans QB C.J. Stroud (pectoral) has not been throwing recently because of a tight pectoral muscle, but the injury is believed to be minor, according to sources.
Footballguys view: This is not a concern in early June, but let's put a pin in this story and come back to it if the problem persists in training camp. Texans OC Nick Caley said he had "no concerns whatsoever" about Stroud not throwing at voluntary workouts this week. With the utmost trust from Caley and his teammates in 2025, Stroud is perhaps set for a breakout season. |

Houston Texans WR Christian Kirk 'has been everything we could ask for (so far this offseason),' according to head coach DeMeco Ryans. Teammate Nico Collins referred to Kirk as a 'slot magician.''You talk about a guy who is dedicated to getting better. He has honed in on his craft and he's leading our young guys. He's a hard worker, he shows up every day with the right attitude working hard and showing guys how it's done,' Ryans said.
Footballguys view: The last time Kirk played a full season (2022), he finished with over 1,100 yards receiving and eight touchdowns. Injuries shortened his last two seasons with the Jaguars, and now Kirk is impressing with the Texans. We're not projecting him over 1,000 with this new team, but if Kirk plays a full season as a 'slot magician' we could see him catching around 60 passes for around 800 yards and 4-5 touchdowns. That's worth a consideration as a deep flex option for Fantasy GMs out there. |

Houston Texans RB Joe Mixon (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Wednesday, May 28. He was recently seen wearing a walking boot because of a minor injury, according to a source.
Footballguys view: KPRC2's Aaron Wilson, in making the initial report, downplayed the severity and suggested Mixon would be ready for training camp. Despite missing three games with an ankle injury, Mixon's 1,016 rushing yards last season marked his fourth time crossing the threshold. He also ran for 11 touchdowns, the second-most in his career, and his 4.1 yards per carry were a step up from the season prior. Mixon added another 309 yards on 36 receptions and finished as RB10. He is being drafted as RB16 with the 51st pick overall in early best balls. |

Houston Texans OT Aireontae Ersery is being viewed exclusively by the team as an offensive tackle option for now, even though he may not necessarily win a starting job, according to head coach DeMeco Ryans.

Link to storyJonathan M. Alexander, from the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans rookie WRs Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel will have opportunities "to carve out roles early on behind Nico Collins and Christian Kirk."
Footballguys view: We love the upside of both Higgins and Noel in dynasty formats, but there could be some more fantasy value mined this year with these college (and now pro) teammates. Higgins has the upside to be an outside threat, and his ball-tracking ability makes him a potential favorite deep target for QB CJ Stroud. Noel is likely directly behind Kirk, and he's kind of the slot-receiver-of-the-future. Kirk is not going to just be swept out of the way by this rookie duo, and the veteran has value as a potential PPR flex play in the Texans' offense. |

Houston Texans fourth-round draft choice RB Woody Marks signed a four-year contract with the Texans Saturday, May 10, worth $6 million, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Marks ran 198 times for 1,133 yards and nine touchdowns after transferring from Mississippi State to USC last year. He also caught 47 passes for 321 yards with the Trojans. Joe Mixon, Dare Ogunbowale, Dameon Pierce, J.J. Taylor, and Jawhar Jordan will join Marks in the backfield mix for the Texans. |
Houston Texans OG Nick Broeker was waived Friday, May 9.
Link to storyHouston Texans third-round draft choice WR Jaylin Noel and seventh-round draft choice TE Luke Lachey signed four-year contracts with the Texans Friday, May 9. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Noel is a hyper quick receiver who can get open in tight spaces. In addition to what he can do as a slot receiver, Noel should contribute on special teams as a returner. Lachey had a knee injury a few years ago at Iowa, and he would've been a higher draft pick if not for that injury. There's some TJ Hockenson to his game, but he's clearly got to stay healthy and prove himself as a late-round pick. |

Houston Texans WR Tank Dell (knee) 'will more than likely miss the 2025 season' while recovering from a knee injury, according to Jonathan Alexander of the Houston Chronicle.
Footballguys view: This is no real surprise given the nature of his knee injury and the timing of his ACL surgery, which took place just two months ago. The timetable for ACL injuries is typically six to 12 months. Dell also dislocated his knee, tore other ligaments, and damaged his meniscus. The Texans signed Christian Kirk as a free agent this offseason and added Iowa State's Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel with the 34th and 79th pick overall, respectively, in the NFL Draft. The Texans currently have 12 receivers on their 90-man roster: Nico Collins, Kirk, Higgins, Noel, Dell, Justin Watson, Xavier Hutchinson, John Metchie III, Jared Wayne, Braxton Berrios, Johnny Johnson III, and Xavier Johnson. But by September, that number should be whittled down to six. Collins is signed through 2026, and Higgins and Noel, who are projected to be contributors sooner rather than later, will play on four-year rookie deals. |

Free-agent RB Nyheim Hines (Browns) worked out for the Houston Texans on Thursday, May 1.
Footballguys view: Hines hasn't played football since the 2022 season when he split time with the Colts and the Bills. He missed all of 2023 due to an accident involving a jet ski, and he couldn't get right last year with the Browns. He was declared out for the remainder of the 2024 season in late October. If healthy, the veteran back can help out in passing situations. The Texans may just be updating their emergency list here. |

Link to storyHouston Texans RB Woody Marks could have a chance to earn the No. 2 running back role at some point during the 2025 season, in the opinion of TexansWire's Cole Thompson.
Footballguys view: As Thompson noted, it's the Joe Mixon show for another year, but Marks might have a bigger role than most Day 3 picks. He's a receiving threat that shines when asked to win in the flats on third down. That aligns with the newcomer's Fantasy Outlook in the Footballguys Rookie Draft Guide Version 3.0. Marks could earn an immediate role with sneaky value as a pass-catcher, especially with Damien Pierce, J.J. Taylor, and Dare Ogunbowale all becoming free agents after the season. |
