Houston Texans RB Joe Mixon (foot) will be evaluated after he sits out the first four games of the season, but general manager Nick Caserio indicated there is no guarantee that Mixon will be ready to play at that point.
Footballguys view: There's no telling if Mixon will be ready to go after four weeks. Fantasy GMs have taken Mixon off draft boards for good reason. Nick Chubb begins the year as the starter with Dameon Pierce working as the primary backup. Chubb has a current ADP of RB46, which is a level he should be able to outplay so long as he's healthy. We see Chubb as a deep flex play while he fills in for Mixon. |

RB Joe Mixon (foot) was placed on the non-football injury list at the start of training camp, and the team announced that he will be placed on the reserve version of the list at the cut to 53 players on Tuesday. The move will make Mixon unable to play in the first four games of the season.
Footballguys view: The Texans open the season with games against the Rams, Buccaneers, Jaguars, and Titans. Mixon injured his foot while he was away from the team ahead of camp, and there's been little discussion of when he might be able to play. Nick Chubb is in line to be the starting running back in Week 1, and a return to form early in the season could make it difficult for Mixon to get his job back if he's cleared to return. |

Houston Texans RB Joe Mixon (ankle, foot) has had a 'long and complicated' rehab, according to a source. There's no structural damage, but he plateaued during his rehab and sought some electromagnetic treatment. Beat writer Aaron Wilson believes Mixon needs more time.
Footballguys view: Mixon remains on the Non-Football Injury List, and his chances of being ready for Week 1 are all but nonexistent. With Mixon out, the Texans have Nick Chubb, Dameon Pierce, Dare Ogunbowale, and Woody Marks on the depth chart. While he got off to a slow start in camp, Chubb displayed burst and his trademark ability to break tackles in the team's second exhibition game against the Panthers. Considering he's all but certain to open the season as Houston's starter, Chubb's 12th-round price tag doesn't seem all that high. |

Link to storyHouston Texans WR Jayden Higgins is competing for one of the starting receiver jobs but will see plenty of playing time this season even if he is not in the starting lineup, in the opinion of ESPN.com's DJ Bien-Amie.
Footballguys view: Higgins is going to rotate with Xavier Hutchinson to open the season, but if he plays up to his draft slot, he should become the starter in time. The bigger concern with his fantasy value is the Texans lacking a credible running game and overhauled offensive line. He's only a late round bench stash for now. |

Houston Texans WR Xavier Hutchinson has improved his receiving skills, and his role continues to increase with the team. He's a do-it-all type of player, and he has become one of QB C.J. Stroud's go-to targets on short and intermediate passes.

Houston Texans RB Nick Chubb looks like he regained some of his speed now that he's two years removed from a significant knee injury, in the opinion of beat writer Jonathan Alexander. He was breaking tackles and finding holes, which he has done his whole career.

Houston Texans RB Joe Mixon (ankle, foot) could land on the Physically Unable to Perform list and miss the first four games of the season, in the opinion of beat writer Jonathan Alexander.
Footballguys view: He hasn't been seen out at practice, nor has he worked off to the side, which would indicate he's not two to three weeks away from returning from the foot or ankle injury he suffered in the offseason. Nick Chubb will be the lead back for the Texans until Mixon is healthy which may last a month into the regular season. |

Houston Texans WR Jayden Higgins caught one pass for 14 yards during the preseason game against the Carolina Panthers Saturday, Aug. 16. He was targeted three times during the game.
Footballguys view: It looks like Higgins is the backup to Nico Collins at the X receiver position as opposed to the starting Z, as he was listed on the unofficial team depth chart. Higgins has been going off of the board as a priority bench upside stash, but this isn't a good sign for his early season value. Xavier Hutchinson was the starting Z in the second preseason game, with Christian Kirk in the slot in three wide receiver sets. |
Houston Texans RB Nick Chubb rushed for 25 yards on five carries during the preseason game against the Carolina Panthers Saturday, Aug. 16. He also caught one pass for four yards during the game.
Footballguys view: Chubb looked much better than the reports from training camp that portrayed him as over the hill. Dameon Pierce returned to practice this week and split carries with Chubb, but didn't suit up for this one. Joe Mixon (foot) continues to be a complete question mark for Week 1 and beyond. It looks like Chubb is the back to target in the late rounds, with rookie fourth round pick Woody Marks also having a good game and asserting his bid to have a role, perhaps even when Mixon is healthy enough to play. |

Houston Texans RB Joe Mixon (foot) is 'not considered a lock' to be ready for Week 1, leagues sources told Aaron Wilson of KPRC.com.
Footballguys view: Everyone needs to keep an eye on this situation. Mixon has been out of action this offseason and into training camp due to this foot injury. The Texans will wisely be cautious with the veteran back as he recovers. Nick Chubb is there, but he is unlikely to be the same player he used to be at his age (and with the injuries he's dealt with). Texans OC Nick Caley praised Dameon Pierce recently, and he could have a larger role if/when Mixon misses time. |

Houston Texans WR Johnny Johnson III (undisclosed) was waived from the Reserve/Injured list Friday, Aug. 15, after the two sides reached an injury settlement.
Link to storyThe Texans have not updated the media about Joe Mixon's foot injury during the first three weeks of training camp. The lack of news has created a vacuum filled by speculation.
Footballguys view: Our injury expert Adam Hutchison writes: "Joe Mixon's foot injury has lingered without significant updates for over two weeks, and the silence is deafening. The original update per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport indicated only that Mixon would be reevaluated closer to the start of the season. The lack of clarity on the injury's specifics has fueled speculation about the severity and potential impact on his availability. Looking at historical data for NFL running backs, non-specific foot injuries typically result in a return within 0-3 weeks. However, if the injury is a midfoot sprain (a more serious condition with a longer recovery period) the timeline extends to 4-10 weeks. Based on the Texans' cautious messaging, the latter seems more likely, meaning Mixon is at risk of missing the first half of the season. Currently, Mixon holds an RB27 ranking (72nd overall) according to Footballguys Average Draft Position data. Given the uncertainty and potential for a lengthy recovery, that price tag appears steep. Drafting Mixon at his current ADP presents considerable risk, especially if he's unavailable for multiple early-season games. It would appear more prudent to target him as a depth option as a RB4/RB5. For comparison, players being selected in that range include Quinshon Judkins or Najee Harris (picks 116-128). Unless further positive news emerges, Mixon's situation warrants caution, allowing another manager to take on the associated uncertainty and roster risk." |
Houston Texans WR Christian Kirk has been the most consistent receiver other than WR Nico Collins during training camp, in the opinion of TexansWire's Cole Thompson.
Footballguys view: Kirk could have extra value in PPR leagues as a reliable short and intermediate range target with the Texans offensive line still under construction and maybe not ready to give CJ Stroud consistent time to throw downfield. He is underrated in PPR leagues and should be a target especially if you neglect wide receiver early in your draft and are valuing high floor over high ceiling on your wide receiver bench. |

Houston Texans RB Dameon Pierce (quadricep) is available for Saturday's preseason game against the Carolina Panthers after a lengthy battle with a strained quadricep. 'The expectation is just to be the best version of himself. He's a physical, violent runner on contact. I've had an appreciation for him since he came out of college,' offensive coordinator Nick Caley told Click2Houston.com.
Footballguys view: This is good news after Pierce's practice participation was up and down this week. It doesn't sound like he had a setback. Most observers say Nick Chubb doesn't have anything left, so Pierce could get a shot if Joe Mixon's ominous ankle/foot issue affects him into the regular season. Pierce struggled in Bobby Slowik's zone running game the last two years, but could be better if Caley has more gap/power runs that are better suited to his strengths as a runner. |
Houston Texans RB Dameon Pierce (quadriceps) did not participate in practice Thursday, Aug. 14.
Footballguys view: Pierce was splitting first team reps with Nick Chubb and certainly could be improved in a running game that has more gap and less zone than former offensive coordinator Billy Slowik's, but this isn't a great sign after he spent weeks on the PUP list to open camp due to a quad injury. |

Houston Texans TE Irv Smith (hand) is not participating in practice Tuesday, Aug. 12.
Footballguys view: With Brevin Jordan on season-ending IR, Smith will have a chance to win the backup job behind Dalton Schultz. Cade Stover and rookie Luke Lachey are also vying for that role. However, a deep wide receiver room makes it very unlikely that the backup tight end will see meaningful opportunities in the Houston passing game. |
