Falcons | Michael Penix Jr. working his way back Wed Jan 28, 01:12 PM
Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr. (knee) is working out and eyeing a return to full workout by April.
Footballguys view: New Falcons HC Kevin Stefanski shared his excitement for Penix at his introductory press conference. The Falcons agreed to a modified contract with Kirk Cousins earlier this month, and that could make him a tradable asset if Penix is considered the unquestioned starter.
Houston Texans assistant general manager James Liipfert is scheduled to fly to Atlanta for a second interview with the Falcons' general manager position. Sources indicated the meeting will be later in the week.
Link to storyNew head coach Kevin Stefanski and the Falcons hired Tommy Rees as offensive coordinator. Rees, a former Notre Dame quarterback, was in that position with the Browns last season. On Tuesday, Stefanski said Rees, 33, would be the one calling plays. Stefanski started last season calling plays before relinquishing the job to Rees last November.
Footballguys view: "That's a setup that I'm very, very comfortable with," Stefanski said. "I think he's had unbelievable experiences in his young career [and] is somebody that I trust." Rees joined Stefanski with Cleveland in 2024 as a pass game specialist and tight ends coach. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2025. For what it's worth, Falcons president of football Matt Ryan and Stefanski both said that they envision the team as one that runs the football and can stop the run. Expect Rees and the offense to lean on All-Pro running back Bijan Robinson.
Atlanta Falcons TE Kyle Pitts could be a candidate for the franchise tag, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, who quotes an AFC executive that says the projected $15.9 million tag number is 'reasonable,' and that retaining Pitts 'seems like a good move at this stage.'
Footballguys view: The 2025 campaign was set up as a make-or-break season for Pitts. Turns out, his fifth season was his best as a pro, with 88 catches for 928 yards and 5 touchdowns. His TE2 finish overall was the kind of outcome fantasy investors have been hoping for since his 1,000-yard rookie season. While the team's QB situation is still to be determined, new head coach Kevin Stefanski leaned heavily on the tight end position. We'll all be interested to see how Pitts might fit into that scheme.

Miami Dolphins wide receivers coach Robert Prince has been hired by the Atlanta Falcons as their wide receivers coach. The Falcons have also hired Cleveland Browns senior consultant Bob Quinn as a senior advisor to the head coach.
Footballguys view: Prince has been a WRs coach in some capacity for the Jaguars, Seahawks, Lions, Texans, Cowboys, and -- most recently -- the Dolphins. While with the Cowboys, Prince coached wideout CeeDee Lamb to three consecutive Pro Bowl selections. He also coached Pro Football Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate, and Kenny Golladay during his time in Detroit. Prince interviewed for the Giants' OC job last week, but Monday's news suggests he's not in the running for that position. Quinn, meanwhile, was a senior personnel and coaching executive with the Browns for the last five seasons.
Miami Dolphins special teams coordinator Craig Aukerman has been hired by the Atlanta Falcons as their new special teams coordinator.
Footballguys view: Aukerman, who served as the special teams coordinator for the Miami Dolphins last season, will take over for Marquice Williams in Atlanta. The Falcons' special teams units had their share of issues last season, but they figured things out late in the year. Nonetheless, head coach Kevin Stefanski has decided to make a move. The team has now hired all three coordinator spots.
Atlanta Falcons LB Kaden Elliss' 30 pass-rush wins in 2025 were twice as many as any other off-ball linebacker.

Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees was named Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Thursday, Jan. 22.
Link to storyFree-agent TE Joshua Simon (Falcons) signed a Reserve/Future contract with the Atlanta Falcons Wednesday, Jan. 21. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Link to storyArizona Cardinals passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach Drew Terrell interviewed for the Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator position.
Link to storyTennessee Titans offensive line coach Bill Callahan was hired in the same capacity by the Atlanta Falcons Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Footballguys view: Callahan comes to the Falcons with a coaching resume that spans four decades through the college and professional ranks. Callahan joined the league in 1995 as offensive line coach for the Eagles. From there, he spent time with the then-Oakland Raiders and worked his way up from offensive line coach to offensive coordinator to head coach by 2002. When newly-hired Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski created his Cleveland Browns staff in 2020, Callahan joined as offensive line coach. He quickly became a vital cog and someone Stefanski leaned on. Now, he'll reprise that role in Atlanta.
Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich received a three-year extension Monday, Jan. 19. Financial terms weren't disclosed.
Footballguys view: Although the Falcons finished an uninspiring 19th in points allowed and 15th in yards surrendered, the defense is chock full of talent, with a good mix of young up-and-comers and veterans. There were certainly growing pains and inconsistencies in Ulbrich's first season as DC, but the defense was one of the league's best against the pass for much of the first half of the season, and it put on a few prime-time showcases during Monday night wins over the Bills and Rams.

Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will be retained on the staff of new head coach Kevin Stefanski, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reports.
Footballguys view: Rapoport also reported that Tommy Rees, who was Stefanski's offensive coordinator with the Browns in 2025, is likely to serve in the same role in Atlanta. Bill Callahan, Cleveland's offensive line coach from 2020-2023, is also expected to return to working on Stefanski's staff. But the retention of Ulbrich is most pivotal. Owner Arthur Blank said that he would recommend Ulbrich to whoever eventually became the team's next head coach. However, he didn't want to "dictate" any coordinator choices. Nonetheless, Stefanski was on board, which maintains some consistency at the very top for a promising unit.

Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees will not have a second interview for the team's head-coaching vacancy, as he is expected to join the staff of Atlanta Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski, formerly of the Browns.
Footballguys view: Rees served as Cleveland's offensive coordinator in 2025, working closely with Stefanski for two seasons. Before joining the Browns staff in 2024, Rees was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Alabama in 2023, and held the same role at Notre Dame from 2020-2023. Stefanski is an experienced play-caller, and most assume he will continue to call plays in Atlanta.
Updating a previous report, new Atlanta Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski is signing a five-year deal, according to sources.
Link to storyFormer Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski is finalizing a deal to become the next head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Stefanski was the second best name on the market with Mike Tomlin likely sitting this hiring cycle out, so after John Harbaugh signed with the Giants, the Falcons got to work. Stefanski elevated Cleveland before the Deshaun Watson trade, and he should be able to work with Michael Penix Jr. once the 2024 first round pick is healthy. This is a good development for the Falcons offense.
Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley interviewed for the head coaching vacancy of the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday, Jan. 15.
Link to storyAtlanta Falcons S Xavier Watts led all rookies with five interceptions in 2025, and his 96 total tackles ranked fourth among the rookie class.
Link to storyThe Atlanta Falcons will interview former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce for their head coaching vacancy.
Footballguys view: Fired a year ago after one season as the Raiders head coach, Pierce has previously worked with Falcons President Matt Ryan at CBS. Pierce is known as a player's coach, and his previous relationship with Ryan could help land him the job. He seems to be a long-shot for any open spot after his one season with the hapless Raiders ended with a 4-13 record.

Free agent head coach Mike McDaniel has completed an interview with the Atlanta Falcons of the team's head coaching vacancy on Monday, Jan. 12.
Footballguys view: McDaniel was an offensive assistant with the Falcons from 2015-16, which included being a part of the staff during the team's Super Bowl run. Newly announced president of football -- Matt Ryan -- was the franchise's quarterback at the time and named league MVP for the 2016 season. In addition to interviewing with the Lions for their offensive coordinator opening, McDaniel is scheduled to meet with the Ravens as a head coaching candidate.
Atlanta Falcons TE Kyle Pitts won't get "top tight end money" from the Falcons in free agency, in the opinion of ESPN's Dan Graziano.
Footballguys view: Graziano further notes that WR Drake London is eligible for an extension, and Pitts hasn't been consistently healthy or consistently great since his rookie year. That said, Pitts finished with 88 receptions for 928 yards and five touchdowns. It was Pitts' best season since that inaugural campaign in 2021. We'll be watching this one closely.

The Atlanta Falcons officially hired former QB Matt Ryan to be the team's president of football Saturday, Jan. 10.
Footballguys view: He will now lead the search for the organization's vacant head coach and general manager positions. Ryan was an analyst for CBS, but now he's in control of getting the Falcons back on track.

Atlanta Falcons LB James Pearce Jr. led all rookies with 10.5 sacks in 2025, and he became one of four rookies in NFL history to record a sack in six straight games.
Link to storyAtlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins agreed to a contract revision Tuesday, Jan. 6, on the final two years of his contract. As part of the restructure, there is now a guarantee in the amount of $67.9 million for the 2027 season that vests March 13. The restructure also included reducing his 2026 base salary from a non-guaranteed $35 million to just $2.1 million, a difference of $32.9 million. That amount equals the increase in his 2027 compensation that this amended deal includes, just split differently.
Footballguys view: While Cousins and the Falcons -- who are searching for a new general manager and head coach -- could agree to another amended deal to keep him with Atlanta, one logical possibility posited by salary cap experts is the team moving on from Cousins before March 13 via a post-June 1 release. He appeared in 10 games this season, starting the final seven. Cousins, who threw 10 touchdown passes and five interceptions in seven starts, said after the Week 18 win over the Saints that he would like to keep playing and kept the door open to return to Atlanta.

Chicago Bears assistant general manager Ian Cunningham has been requested for an interview for the Atlanta Falcons' general manager vacancy.
Link to storyFree-agent WR Chris Blair (Falcons) and RB Carlos Washington Jr. (Falcons) signed Reserve/Future contracts with the Atlanta Falcons Monday, Jan. 5. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Link to storyRetired and former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan - now working as an analyst for CBS Sports - is being strongly considered for a high-profile, front-office role with the team, according to multiple sources. The role being discussed is reportedly similar to the special assistant to the owner and CEO position that Chris Spielman currently holds with the Detroit Lions.
Link to storyMatt Ryan player page
Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot were fired on Sunday, Jan. 4.
Footballguys view: According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, former Falcons QB Matt Ryan is being strongly considered for a high-profile front-office role, similar to what Detroit has with Chris Spielman. As for next steps, NFL.com suggests the pieces are certainly there to attract a good candidate -- running back Bijan Robinson and wide receiver Drake London chief among them. But questions remain throughout much of the roster and at the all-important quarterback position, with Michael Penix Jr. recovering from an ACL injury. We'll continue to watch for more on this in coming weeks.

Atlanta Falcons TE Kyle Pitts caught six passes for 58 yards against the New Orleans Saints in Week 18. He was targeted nine times during the game.
Footballguys view: Pitts showed potential free agent suitors more in the second half of this season than he did in the two previous years he spent with the Falcons. It will be fascinating to see who targets Pitts in free agency and how much they are willing to pay him.
Kyle Pitts Sr. player page
Atlanta Falcons WR Drake London caught four passes for 78 yards and one touchdown against the New Orleans Saints in Week 18. He was targeted eight times during the game.
Footballguys view: London had a big high point catch downfield, reminding us of his ability to take over games. We are still waiting for him to put together a full WR1 fantasy season, but we saw London at his peak before suffering a nagging knee injury. He should go in the first round of many 2026 fantasy drafts despite the Week 1 uncertainty at quarterback for the Falcons.
Atlanta Falcons RB Tyler Allgeier rushed for 16 yards on seven carries against the New Orleans Saints in Week 18. He also caught one pass for three yards during the game.
Footballguys view: Allgeier will be part of a stacked free agent running back class led by Breece Hall and Kenneth Walker III. That could keep his price reasonable enough to end up returning to the Falcons. If not, Bijan Robinson should be cleared for liftoff to new levels of fantasy production next season.
Atlanta Falcons RB Bijan Robinson rushed for 33 yards on 15 carries against the New Orleans Saints in Week 18. He also caught three passes for 10 yards during the game.
Footballguys view: Robinson was a Week 18 dud, but that won't stop people from taking him as the #1 overall pick in 2026 fantasy drafts. It will be rare to see him fall past the #2 pick in the event that the team with the #1 pick prefers Ja'Marr Chase. If Tyler Allgeier leaves in free agency, Robinson may become the consensus #1 fantasy pick.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins went 18-for-32 for 180 yards, one touchdown and one interception against the New Orleans Saints in Week 18.
Footballguys view: Cousins rattled off four straight wins to end the season to finish tied with the Panthers and the Bucs in the standings. They lost the three-team tiebreaker because they were swept by the Panthers. Michael Penix is uncertain for Week 1 next season. The Falcons have already guaranteed a $10 roster bonus for Cousins, but his $35 million salary is a lot for a player who didn't seem to be in their future plans a month ago.

Atlanta Falcons WR Darnell Mooney (knee) is expected to play in Week 18's game versus the New Orleans Saints, according to head coach Raheem Morris.
Footballguys view: Multiple injuries have left Mooney pretty much ineffective in 2025. With Kyle Pitts and Drake London set to play against the Saints, there's a chance Mooney doesn't do much (which is as per usual in recent weeks).

Atlanta Falcons WR Drake London (knee) is expected to play in Week 18's game versus the New Orleans Saints, according to head coach Raheem Morris.
Footballguys view: London is clearly not himself, but he's giving it a go in the season finale. Against the Saints, we think London could post high-end WR2 numbers for Fantasy GMs still playing in Week 18.
