Raiders | Kenyan Drake still hasn't been cleared    Sat Jun 25, 07:21 PM

Las Vegas Raiders RB Kenyan Drake (ankle) has not been cleared for mandatory minicamp, according to The Athletic's Vic Tafur.

Footballguys view: Broken ankles can be tricky. With this development in mind, Drake probably had a serious ankle surgery to still be waiting for clearance to play six months later. This is no big deal as long as he doesn't start camp on the PUP list, but if he does, the team has Ameer Abdullah as potential passing down back, and Josh Jacobs can also be a three-down back - but he wasn't able to practice in OTAs earlier this month.

Raiders | RB Drake Still Recovering    Sat Jun 25, 03:27 PM

Vic Tafur, from The Athletic, reports Las Vegas Raiders RB Kenyan Drake (ankle) was not cleared for mandatory minicamp in June.

Footballguys view: The Raiders are likely to move to a RBBC this year, perhaps featuring three running backs, when Drake is healthy. Josh Jacobs is the lead back, likely in his last year with the Raiders. Drake is there to work in space as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. Rookie Zamir White is impressing in offseason camp and could earn a larger role as the season goes on. White will push Drake for time and perhaps get a head start as Drake may not be ready for the start of training camp.

Raiders | WR Robinson Pushed Down Pecking Order?    Thu Jun 23, 03:51 PM

Tashan Reed, from The Athletic, reports Las Vegas Raiders WR Demarcus Robinson could be as low as fifth on the Raiders' wide receiver depth chart.

Footballguys view: Robinson was brought in on a one-year deal this offseason, but he's not a lock for the 53-man roster. In addition to adding Robinson in free agency, the Raiders also signed Mack Hollins and Keelan Cole. We'll see those three compete for the no.3 spot behind Davante Adams and Hunter Renfrow. The Raiders no.3 receiver is further down the pecking order in the passing game, but watch this competition unfold in training camp in case injuries strike on the depth chart.

Raiders | Las Vegas to use RBBC?    Sun Jun 19, 07:08 PM

The Las Vegas Raiders might go with a running-back-by-committee approach in 2022, The Athletic's Vic Tafur speculates. 'Sounds to me like you have to use [Zamir White] this season,' Tafur wrote. '[Josh] Jacobs and [Kenyan] Drake will likely both be gone next year after playing out their contracts, and there is probably a decent chance [general manager Dave] Ziegler and [head coach Josh] McDaniels already think White is better than them. A committee approach seems to make sense, keeping everybody fresh and ideally available.'

Footballguys view: This report has been out there before as reporters look at how the Raiders could be using their backfield talent. In fact, the Raiders would've used RBBC last year before Drake was injured. Now, the rookie White will work his way into the mix and perhaps take over the backfield next season when Jacobs and Drake are gone. The Raiders have an explosive offense, but the backfield could prove to be a headache for Fantasy GMs this season.

Raiders | Denzelle Good has been sidelined    Wed Jun 15, 06:43 PM

Raiders | Jacobs missing minicamp practices    Sun Jun 12, 11:02 AM

Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that while RB Josh Jacobs has missed Raiders minicamp programs, he has been participating in the offseason program. That "sends up a signal that something is up physically" according to Bonsignore, but also "there is no sense that it is anything serious". Bonsignore adds that his condition might not be known until training camp.

Footballguys view: Jacobs has had a lot of nicks and bumps and usage over the first three years of his tenure with the Raiders, so it wouldn't shocking to find out he had some sort of offseason procedure. If he is recovering from something that would be better than learning that the team hoped offseason rest would resolve an issue that ended up keeping him out of minicamp. We'll be watching this closely as Kenyan Drake is also coming back from a broken ankle. Fourth-round pick Zamir White could emerge as the hammer in this backfield if Jacobs can't stay on the field, and he should be on your waiver wire watch list - or more if Jacobs is limited in camp. The Raiders declined Jacobs fifth year option this offseason, so they may know more than we do about Jacobs viability - at least at 8 million for 2023, which is the proposition they turned down.

Raiders | Waller extension imminent?    Sun Jun 12, 10:48 AM

According to Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, "the sense is" TE Darren Waller is going to be a long time Raider and that an extension is "immiment", but it could happen next year since Waller has two years left on his deal. Bonsignore thinks that could benefit Waller because he should outperform last season's numbers in an injury-marred year.

Footballguys view: Waller has extra motivation this year. He turns 30 in September and his next contract will likely be his last big one. Adams gives the team a threat on the outside so that Waller won't be the primary focus of opposing defenses, although he should overtake Waller as the top target in the offense. Any drop in volume should be made up by a leap in efficiency, making Waller a solid pick at ADP with the ability to outperform it.

Raiders | Davante Adams talks Packers trade    Sat Jun 11, 03:20 PM

Las Vegas Raiders WR Davante Adams said part of the reason he wanted to be traded from the Green Bay Packers had to do with QB Aaron Rodgers potentially retiring in the next year or two. 'I got aspirations of doing really, really big things and being remembered, and it just wasn't really a point in my career that I was willing to sacrifice Aaron [Rodgers] not being there after a year or two,' Adams said.

Footballguys view: Adams said Derek's Carr's "talent and ability" are "similar" to Rodgers. He's going to go off for the Raiders this year as the top receiver in a high-powered offense. Fantasy GMs are taking him as a top receiver as per usual, and Adams is a lock to be a first-round pick in every draft.

Raiders | Darren Waller extension 'a priority'    Sat Jun 11, 12:59 PM

Las Vegas Raiders TE Darren Waller's contract extension is 'expected to be a priority' now that WR Hunter Renfrow has been locked up with a new contract, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported on Friday, June 10.

Footballguys view: There is no doubt that Waller is a priority for the Raiders. He's arguably the best tight end in the game today, and Waller can create mismatches every time he's on the field. With WR Davante Adams getting a lot of attention - and Renfrow doing work as well - Waller should be able to continue posting top-tier TE1 numbers for Fantasy GMs in 2022.

Raiders | Hunter Renfrow signs extension    Fri Jun 10, 08:31 AM

Las Vegas Raiders WR Hunter Renfrow agreed to a two-year, $32 million extension with $21 million guaranteed Friday, June 10.

Footballguys view: Renfrow's salary level of 16 million a year was reserved for top #1 receivers just a few years ago. The Raiders helped set this crazy 2022 wide receiver market with the Davante Adams contract and now they are setting a new benchmark for top slot receivers. Renfrow should be considered a solid WR3/Flex in PPR leagues.

Raiders | Darren Waller envisions big role    Tue Jun 7, 11:51 PM

Las Vegas Raiders TE Darren Waller expects to do 'a lot of things' in the new offense under head coach Josh McDaniels. 'I'm excited. It's asking me to do a lot of things,' said Waller. 'We watch a lot of tape of Rob Gronkowski running wild from old New England clips, so it's exciting to see the different ways that I'll be used.'

Footballguys view: Waller and WR Davante Adams should go hog wild in the McDaniels offense this year. Fantasy GMs are drooling thinking about how high powered the Raiders passing game could be (don't forget about Hunter Renfrow too!). Waller is a no-brainer TE1 for Fantasy GMs and could finish 2022 as the best fantasy tight end in the league.

Raiders | Josh Jacobs still sitting with injury    Sat Jun 4, 02:44 PM

Las Vegas Raiders RB Josh Jacobs (undisclosed) sat for a second straight week during organized team activities due to an undisclosed injury.

Footballguys view: It's the offseason, so there doesn't need to be any injury designation. When healthy, Jacobs will be the lead back in a RBBC with Kenyan Drake. We like him in the mid-RB2 range in your fantasy drafts, although some will take him off the board as a low-end RB1.

Raiders | TE Waller Not Worried About His Contract    Sun May 29, 01:13 PM

Charean Williams, from Pro Football Talk, reports Las Vegas Raiders TE Darren Waller is not worried about his contract as he practices with his teammates at voluntary OTAs. "My agent is working on that," Waller said on the Ross Tucker Podcast. "I understand it, but I know if I focus on it too much, it could take away from my job and learning a new system and just continuing to try to elevate and take care of my body in the right way. I try to focus on those things and let my agent handle that. When decisions need to be made, decisions need to be made."

Footballguys view: Waller has gone from a WR in college at Georgia Tech to a developmental TE with the Ravens to one of the best in the league at his position with the Raiders. He has clearly outplayed the contract he signed in 2019, and Waller has two years remaining on his deal with zero guaranteed money. The Raiders should do what they can to take care of the playmaker, and Fantasy GMs know he's a top-tier TE1 in what should be a high-powered Raiders passing attack.

Raiders | No Colin Kaepernick signing yet    Fri May 27, 05:30 PM

Free-agent QB Colin Kaepernick (49ers) is not close to a contract agreement with the Las Vegas Raiders at this time, according to source.

Footballguys view: There's the reality of the situation. The Raiders can show interest, they can work him out - and all reports indicate Kaepernick looked good - but when it comes to signing him that's another story. The Raiders should really consider Kaepernick as a backup to Derek Carr. First, they have Jarrett Stidham and Nick Mullens behind Carr at this time. Second, the Raiders want to be in a championship window and could use the insurance in a veteran quarterback if Carr has to miss time.

Raiders | Josh Jacobs sits out practice    Thu May 26, 10:23 PM

Las Vegas Raiders RB Josh Jacobs (undisclosed) did not participate in individual or team drills during practice Thursday, May 26.

Footballguys view: Usually missing practices in the spring is no big deal, but we have to monitor these situations for signs of something more worrisome than the team lets on. In the meantime, fourth round pick Zamir White will get more opportunity to show what he can do with Kenyan Drake recovering from ankle surgery after suffering a season-ending injury in December.

Raiders | Workout with QB Kaepernick 'Considered a Positive'     Thu May 26, 03:41 PM

Jeremy Fowler, from ESPN.com, reports free agent QB Colin Kaepernick's workout with the Las Vegas Raiders "was largely considered a positive."

Footballguys view: Fowler also notes that Kaepernick impressed with arm strength and overall conditioning. Kaepernick hasn't played since 2016, but he's worked out for NFL teams as recently as the Michigan spring game back in April. We'll see if the Raiders actually have interest and sign Kaepernick to compete for a backup job behind Derek Carr. The Raiders only have Jarrett Stidham and Nick Mullens as reserve quarterbacks at this time.

Raiders | Colin Kaepernick workout update    Wed May 25, 05:34 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent QB Colin Kaepernick (49ers) is scheduled to work out for the Las Vegas Raiders Wednesday, May 25, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Jarrett Stidham and Nick Mullens are not great backup options behind starter Derek Carr. Kaepernick has been out of the league since 2016 and will turn 35-years old later this year. He had an exhibition at Michigan's spring game at the beginning of April where teams were permitted to watch him workout. Now, the Raiders want to take a longer look.

Raiders | Josh Jacobs a steady producer    Thu May 12, 09:45 PM

Las Vegas Raiders RB Josh Jacobs has topped 1,200 yards from scrimmage and has scored at least seven touchdowns in all three years of his career.

Footballguys view: Jacobs is likely in his final year with the Raiders. He should lead the way for them on the ground once again, but Kenyan Drake will get work in the backfield as well. Behind Jacobs and Drake is rookie RB Zamir White, and he could get a few carries here and there as the team prepares to perhaps make him the featured running back of the future.

Footballguys view: The writing was on the wall when the Patriots selected QB Bailey Zappe in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft. Stidham now follows Josh McDaniels to Las Vegas. He'll compete with Nick Mullens to be the primary backup to Derek Carr this season.

Footballguys view: Cole has flashed speed and big-play ability during his pro career. He's certainly a downfield target who averages a healthy 14.4 yards per catch in five pro seasons. Cole will compete with Bryan Edwards for the no.3 spot behind Davante Adams and Hunter Renfrow on the depth chart.

Any misstep, by injury or otherwise, for Drake can push the Raiders towards Spiller. The Raiders have no financial commitment to Drake beyond 2022.
