Raiders | No leading candidate in QB competition    Wed Jul 24, 11:38 AM

Las Vegas Raiders QB Aidan O'Connell and QB Gardner Minshew will be competing for the starting quarterback job during training camp, and head coach Antonio Pierce said there is no frontrunner for the job, according to ESPN.com's Paul Gutierrez. Pierce said he is not in a hurry to name a starter at this point.

Footballguys view: Minshew is there as the seasoned veteran, and he can start if O'Connell fails to win the job. However, if the competition is close it makes more sense for the Raiders to roll with the young guy. O'Connell enters his second pro season after flashing a bit during his rookie season in 2023.

Raiders | No trade on the horizon for Davante Adams    Wed Jul 17, 12:38 AM

Las Vegas Raiders WR Davante Adams 'is expected to be with the Raiders as there has been absolutely no trade talk - period,' according to his agents on Tuesday, July 16.

Footballguys view: There was a buzz about a week ago that Aaron Rodgers still wants Adams to join him with the Jets. That's great and all, but the reality is that Adams is with the Raiders and set to catch passes from Aidan O'Connell (or Gardner Minshew) instead. If things change, we'll all know about it.

Raiders | Aaron Rodgers still courting Davante Adams    Fri Jul 12, 01:01 AM

Las Vegas Raiders WR Davante Adams said Tuesday, July 9, during the 'Up and Adams' show that New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers continues to push for Adams to join his former quarterback in New York. 'He's in the ear, that's for sure, he's in the ear,' he told host Kay Adams. 'But it's not as easy,' Adams added. 'Obviously, we can get together and talk about the old times and the potential of doing this and that, but like I said, I'm a Raider, and he knows that.'

Footballguys view: Rodgers is like the guy who still goes to high school parties when he's in college - he's stuck in the past. Everyone knows he would love to play with Adams again, but Jets fans would love if he could stay healthy and win some games. It's an interesting thought to be sure because Adams is so talented, but the reality is that Rodgers has plenty to prove this year - without Adams - and he needs to do what is expected.

Raiders | Michael Mayer packed on the pounds during offseason    Fri Jul 12, 01:01 AM

Las Vegas Raiders TE Michael Mayer reportedly is up to 265 pounds - 16 pounds more than he weighed at the 2023 NFL Combine - and the team believes he has made some 'significant strides' as a blocker, according to Tashan Reed of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: Mayer is going to be the "Y" tight end for the Raiders, and he doesn't need to come off the field because he can block and catch. Rookie first-round pick Brock Bowers is a fantastic receiving threat, but he's not the blocker that Mayer is. We'll have to see how the Raiders utilize these two tight ends, but Bowers should be the leading receiver between the two while Mayer could play more snaps. That's why Bowers is a borderline TE1 for Fantasy GMs, and Mayer is a TE3 this season.

Raiders | Alexander Mattison a fit in Vegas' offense    Fri Jul 12, 12:32 AM

Las Vegas Raiders RB Alexander Mattison has spent his entire career in offensive schemes that utilize a similar zone-blocking approach to the one used by offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, and he could become the starter if RB Zamir White isn't able to handle a larger workload, in the opinion of The Athletic's Tashan Reed.

Footballguys view: We could see White pushing for 1,000 yards rushing this year as the Raiders lead back. Mattison is a seasoned veteran with plenty of experience, but if White can handle the workload he won't see the field much. Fantasy GMs consider White a low-end RB2 or flex option, but there's value to be had if he plays up to his potential. If Mattison is playing more, then it means White has failed to do that.

Raiders | Michael Mayer could be the primary TE    Thu Jul 11, 01:35 AM

Las Vegas Raiders TE Michael Mayer could see more snaps this season than rookie first-round TE Brock Bowers, in the opinion of The Athletic's Tashan Reed, who notes that Mayer (6-foot-4, 265 pounds) is bigger than Bowers (6-foot-3, 243 pounds) and made considerable strides as a blocker during his rookie year, which is an area Bowers is not considered strong. Raiders tight ends coach Luke Steckel said earlier this offseason that 'tight ends are blockers first,' which may lead to more playing time for Mayer under run-first offensive coordinator Luke Getsy.

Footballguys view: Bowers is a receiver who lines up at tight end. Mayer is your classic 'Y' tight end who can catch and block. It's going to be interesting to see how these routes/targets/catches are split between the two. Right now, Fantasy GMs are selecting Bowers as a low-end TE1 or TE2 with upside.

Raiders | Three-way battle at CB spot in Vegas    Thu Jul 11, 01:20 AM

Las Vegas Raiders CBs Jakorian Bennett and Brandon Facyson are expected to compete for the starting cornerback job opposite CB Jack Jones with Bennett the favorite, per The Athletic's Tashan Reed, though rookie CB Decamerion Richardson is a dark horse to claim the job.

Raiders | Aidan O'Connell the favorite?    Wed Jul 10, 01:35 PM

Las Vegas Raiders QB Aidan O'Connell is the favorite to be the team's starter in 2024, in the opinion of WR Davante Adams. 'I want whoever is going to look the best when it's live bullets,' Adams said. 'I think right now if I had to say, I think Aidan has the job because obviously he was here before and that's the way that it was. He was running with the one's more and until Gardner [Minshew] comes in and takes the job away from him, I think it's Aidan's job right now.'

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. If both quarterbacks are even, the Raiders are likely to go with the young guy in O'Connell. Minshew is there to be the solid veteran backup who can step in to start if the second-year pro struggles. We don't know if O'Connell can be the future for the Raiders, but he's got the opportunity to prove himself in 2024.

Raiders | Zamir White Ready For Featured Role    Mon Jul 8, 03:16 PM

Asked if Zamir White is ready to "really step up" in the Raiders' run-first offense, The Athletic's Vic Tafur replied: "He did last season, and he is in great shape. But White will have to prove it to the staff again and to GM Tom Telesco. They brought in Alexander Mattison because of his fit to the new offense, and could add another running back if either gets off to a slow start in camp."

Footballguys view: Remember, former Raider Josh Jacobs led the league in rushing in 2022, accounting for nearly 80 percent of the team's carries. He was on pace for a similar percentage last season before sustaining a quad injury that cleared the way for White to show off his abilities. White responded by averaging 114.3 yards from scrimmage per game over the team's last four contests. White was RB9 during that stretch. But volume -- 24.3 opportunities per game -- was the most encouraging aspect of White's rise. Still on his rookie contract, there's no reason to expect White's workload to decrease. He currently sits at RB28 on the Footballguys 2024 Draft Rankings, which is just a little off his RB23 Average Draft Position on Underdog.

Raiders | Dylan Laube has 'great shot'    Sun Jun 30, 04:30 PM

Las Vegas Raiders RB Dylan Laube has a 'great shot' to make the roster out of training camp, his teammate and RB Alexander Mattison said on Saturday, June 29.

Footballguys view: Laube, one of the bigger standouts during the offseason program, will compete for a roster spot in training camp and may even challenge for the No. 3 role against veteran Ameer Abdullah while also having a role on special teams. The sixth-round pick displayed his ability to be an effective receiving back during his collegiate career, and he has experience returning kickoffs and punts. With a new kickoff rule being implemented this season, Laube's value increases even more.

Raiders | Tucker competing to be team's #3 wide receiver    Wed Jun 26, 10:45 AM

Paul Gutierrez of ESPN reports that Raiders WR Tre Tucker "looked like a different player" than his rookie year.

Footballguys view: Head coach Antonio Pierce lavished praise on the 2023 third round pick, saying "He had a hell of an offseason...Everything that we talked about working on, he took that to another level. And you could see the look in his eye of a confident player, of a guy that's just going to constantly get better." Tucker is going to help the Raiders offense with his deep speed more than he'll help fantasy teams, but the 23-year-old could develop into a field-stretching #2 eventually and should be rostered in dynasty leagues if bench size allows.

Raiders | Aidan O'Connell ahead of Gardner Minshew?    Sun Jun 23, 04:13 PM

Las Vegas Raiders QB Aidan O'Connell 'probably has the slight edge' in the quarterback competition with Gardner Minshew, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler said on Sunday, June 23.

Footballguys view: As The Sporting News' Mike Moraitis noted, many have pegged Minshew as the favorite thanks to his free-agent deal and overall advantage in experience. But head coach Antonio Pierce has made it clear since Minshew signed that O'Connell is first in line. "Whatever happens, and whatever we do, it has to go through O'Connell," Pierce said in May. SI.com beat writer Hondo Carpenter recently told us Pierce has said the same privately. Despite a strong finish to his rookie campaign, O'Connell still has much to prove. And at this point, all signs point to him getting every opportunity to do just that.

Raiders | Adams Impressed With Brock Bowers' Business-Like Approach    Tue Jun 18, 04:30 PM

Brock Bowers glides when he runs, his stride resembling that of a free-flowing wideout more than a stereotypical lumbering tight end. And when not hauling in passes in practice, he has caught the attention of three-time All-Pro receiver Davante Adams, who is so impressed with Bowers' no-nonsense attitude off the field he gave him a nickname. "That's 'BM,' man," Adams said. "That's the 'Business Man.'"

Footballguys view: Adams further explained: "[Bowers] doesn't care about nothing else other than just locking in on football. I tried to tell a joke to get him to laugh, talking to the rookies. Sitting there stone-faced, he didn't laugh. That's BM right there. I see what he's about." While we all might have hoped for a better landing spot (and a better QB situation, not battling Adams for targets), Footballguy Sigmund Bloom recently wrote, "Bowers is the type of talent you bet on to transcend his situation eventually, so his ranking is unchanged even though his destination wasn't a positive one."

Raiders | Aidan O'Connell works with starters Wednesday    Fri Jun 14, 11:56 AM

Las Vegas Raiders QB Aidan O'Connell received a majority of the snaps with the first-team offense during practice Wednesday, June 12, according to The Athletic's Tashan Reed.

Footballguys view: O'Connell and Gardner Minshew are in a battle to start for the Raiders. Both should get ample opportunity to prove they can start, but O'Connell should win if the competition is close. Minshew's two-year, $25 million deal was a big raise from the $3.5 million he got from the Colts last year, and indicates the Raiders see him as "bridge starter" quality. They wanted to bring in competition for O'Connell, who was not bad for a third-day pick rookie last year, but isn't the team's quarterback of the future - yet. However, if he can win the job and gel with the offensive weapons, the Raiders could open up a promising window of cap flexibility with a starting quarterback on a rookie contract. Unfortunately, according Tashan Reed from The Athletic, neither quarterback has looked good in OTA practices.

Raiders | Tre Tucker turning heads    Fri Jun 14, 11:56 AM

Las Vegas Raiders WR Tre Tucker has impressed the team with his maturity and performance this spring, according to wide receivers coach Edgar Bennett and head coach Antonio Pierce.'One guy that obviously stood out this offseason; Tre Tucker. Different dude. Looks different, acts different, runs different, catches the ball different. Don't look at the size. Don't mention that. Watch him play. He's the biggest guy out there. Had a hell of an offseason. Came back right after the offseason program and the Super Bowl, got in here and started working. Was here every day. Blazing, we know about the speed, but everything we talked about working on, he took that to another level. You can see the look in his eye of a confident player. Of a guy that wants to constantly get better,' Pierce said.

Footballguys view: Tucker is going to have trouble mattering in fantasy leagues with Davante Adams, Jakobi Meyers, and #13 overall pick Brock Bowers ahead of him in the target pecking order, but his deep speed can add a dimension that increases the value of the entire offense. He should be on your radar in deep dynasty leagues.

Raiders | Dylan Laube has a chance to play early    Fri Jun 7, 01:28 PM

Las Vegas Raiders RB Dylan Laube has the 'open-field ability (that) could earn him a role as the team's primary kick and punt returner,' according to Mike Grimala of the Las Vegas Sun.

Footballguys view: Laube is the type of runner that can gash a defense with discipline. He doesn't waste a lot of motion as a runner, and his footwork creates space for him on offense or special teams. We love him in dynasty formats but know that Laube will have to wait his turn behind Zamir White when it comes to touches in the Raiders offense this year. That means special teams will be the way he can get on the field as a rookie.

Raiders | Brock Bowers moving around    Fri May 31, 12:18 AM

Las Vegas Raiders TE Brock Bowers lined up at multiple spots during the voluntary workout Wednesday, May 29.

Footballguys view: That makes a ton of sense. Bowers was the best tight end in the 2024 NFL draft, but he's a slot receiver in addition to what he can do as a tight end. The Raiders should be moving him around the formation where his speed and smooth athleticism can make Bowers a matchup nightmare. He's a low-end TE1 for Fantasy GMs this year.

Raiders | Top two QBs working with starters    Wed May 29, 03:17 PM

Las Vegas Raiders QB Aidan O'Connell and QB Gardner Minshew have both received work with the first-team offense during organized team activities.

Footballguys view: Minshew has plenty of starting experience, but the Raiders are not handing him anything. O'Connell was an interesting mid-round pick last year, and he flashed at times as a rookie. The ceiling might be limited for both passers, but there are interesting weapons on the Raiders offense. We'll see how long this battle goes into training camp.

Raiders | Michael Mayer drops weight    Thu May 23, 01:47 PM

Las Vegas Raiders TE Michael Mayer has dropped 10 pounds this offseason in order to help him improve his speed, according to The Athletic's Tashan Reed.

Footballguys view: Mayer has been a bit of a forgotten man in fantasy circles even though the Raiders traded up to take him with the 35th pick last year since the Raiders took tight end Brock Bowers at #13 last month. He probably won't have a fantasy impact unless Bowers goes down, but Mayer does give Aidan O'Connell (or Gardner Minshew) and Zamir White a better chance if success if they can put potent two tight end sets together that threaten the defense with the run and the pass.

Vincent Bonsignore, from the Las Vegas Review-Journal, reports Las Vegas Raiders TE Michael Mayer has made a complete recovery from the toe injury that sidelined him for the final three games of 2023.

Footballguys view: Mayer is a complete tight end, and he flashed as a rookie in 2023. This year, Mayer's targets and snaps will get cut into by 2024 first-round pick Brock Bowers. We'll see how these snaps get divided in training camp, but we imagine Bowers will be the lead at the position - and he's got the skill to be a pass-catching weapon from day one. That means Mayer is best left on the waiver wire in most all fantasy leagues.

Las Vegas Raiders OT Thayer Munford Jr. has a chance to start at right tackle in 2024, with head coach Antonio Pierce saying on Friday, May 10, that the job is Munford's 'for the taking.'

Las Vegas Raiders OG Jackson Powers-Johnson saw time at left guard on Day 1 of rookie minicamp on Friday, May 10.

Footballguys view: Powers-Johnson should be a day one starter on the interior line for the Raiders. Like all rookies, there could be some bumps in the road of transition to the NFL, but the second round pick and widely regarded pro-ready player should improve the Raiders offense.

Raiders | Brock Bowers looking for big plays    Sat May 11, 09:54 AM

Las Vegas Raiders TE Brock Bowers said one of his strengths is making plays after the catch. 'One of the things I do best is the yards after catch and being able to get vertical after I get the ball,' Bowers said.

Footballguys view: The Raiders reportedly used Bowers all over the formation in his rookie minicamp debut. His athleticism was also apparent according to beat writers. This is relevant because Bowers didn't test at the combine, casting a little bit of doubt about his measureables. Expect Bowers to answer those questions quickly as a big part of the offense in his rookie year. The quarterback situation and competition for targets isn't ideal for Bowers fantasy value, but he's still worth taking in the top 10 tight ends in redraft leagues and top five of rookie drafts in dynasty leagues.

Raiders | Aidan O'Connell to receive first snaps    Sat May 11, 09:54 AM

Las Vegas Raiders QB Aidan O'Connell will initially work with the first-team offense when offseason workouts begin, according to head coach Antonio Pierce.

Footballguys view: This shouldn't be a surprise, as O'Connell was actually pretty good for a fourth round rookie last year and that's with a midseason coaching change. If O'Connell is good enough to beat out Gardner Minshew, he should be better for Davante Adams and the rest of the Raiders offense fantasy value than Minshew. He should be rostered in superflex dynasty leagues.

This is a competition for Fantasy GMs to monitor in training camp. Either one has QB2 potential from a fantasy perspective in 2024.
