Lions | Detroit works out several kickers Fri Jul 26, 07:12 PM
Free-agent PK Matt Ammendola (Texans), PK Lucas Havrisik (Browns), PK Matthew McCrane (Eagles) and PK Andre Szmyt (Bears) recently worked out for the Detroit Lions.

Detroit Lions PK Michael Badgley (undisclosed) suffered a severe injury preparing for practice Thursday, July 25, and will miss the entire season.
Footballguys view: It looks like UFL star Jake Bates, who did his kicking at Ford Field, will be the kicker for the Lions. With the quality of the Lions offense and most of their games coming indoors this year, Bates is a viable choice once Justin Tucker is off of the board. |

Jacksonville Jaguars PK Cam Little and PK Riley Patterson have received equal reps during spring activities, according to head coach Doug Pederson. 'It'll be interesting in camp to see where it plays out,' Pederson said.

Cleveland Browns PK Dustin Hopkins agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension with the Browns Monday, July 15, worth $15.9 million, according to sources.
Footballguys view: After deciding to part ways with Cade York, the Browns traded a seventh-round pick to the Chargers for Hopkins last August. Hopkins was 33-of-36 on field goals and 24-of-26 on extra points to help the Browns make it to the playoffs. He missed their postseason loss to Houston due to a hamstring injury he suffered in a December game against the Texans. York, a 2022 fourth-round pick, re-signed with the Browns in March, but the Hopkins extension would seem to end any thoughts of a competition. |

Free-agent PK James Turner (Lions) was claimed off waivers by the Green Bay Packers on Thursday, June 20.
Footballguys view: The Packers have now brought in two kickers to compete with Anders Carlson. Greg Joseph, who has 4+ seasons as a starter, is Carlson's top rival in the battle, but Turner was impressing with the Lions before he was released to pick up UFL standout kicker Jake Bates. Turner was the kicker for the Michigan national championship team last season, but went undrafted in April. |
Green Bay Packers PK Jack Podlesny was released Wednesday, June 19.
Link to storyDetroit Lions PK James Turner was waived on Tuesday, June 18.
Link to storyUpdating a previous report, Detroit Lions PK Jake Bates signed a two-year contract worth $1.98 million - including a $100,000 signing bonus - on Tuesday, June 18.
Link to storyFree-agent PK Jake Bates (Texans) is expected to sign with the Detroit Lions, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Bates might even get the same locker he had for the UFL Michigan Panthers, who played in Ford Field this spring. Bates will be in a kicker battle with Michael Badgley, and the winner will have fantasy value because they'll kick indoors for all but three games this year, cleaning up after one of the NFL's best offenses. |
Updating a previous report, free-agent PK Jake Bates (UFL) will sign a two-year deal with the Detroit Lions this week, according to agent Marty Magid.
Link to storyFree-agent PK Jake Bates (Texans) is receiving interest from the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions and Baltimore Ravens, according to a source. All three teams are looking to meet with Bates.
Footballguys view: Bates was a standout UFL kicker with makes from 58, 62, and 64 yards among his 17 conversions out of 22 attempts. He was kicking in Ford Field, so it makes sense that the Lions would be looking at him. The Packers could see him as an alternative to Anders Carlson, who missed six field goal attempts and five extra point attempts last year. The Ravens won't be replacing Justin Tucker, but Tucker won't see much work in camp or the preseason, and Bates could build his resume for another team to add him when they find they don't have a true winner in their kicker battle. |
Free-agent PK Lucas Havrisik (Browns) is participating in the Washington Commanders minicamp this week on a tryout basis.
Footballguys view: Havrisik was adequate at best making 15-of-20 field goal attempts for the Rams last year in nine games, but the Commanders want to bring in competition for Ramiz Ahmed after signing him last week. Ahmed is the only kicker on the roster following Brandon McManus release in the wake of sexual assault allegations. |
Free-agent PK Matthew McCrane (Eagles) worked out for the Washington Commanders Tuesday, June 11, according to NFL Network's Bridget Condon.
Link to storyFree-agent PKs Jake Bates (UFL) and Andre Szmyt (UFL) were among a group of free-agent kickers who tried out for the Washington Commanders on Tuesday, June 11.
Link to storyWashington Commanders PK Ramiz Ahmed was signed to a one-year deal with a base salary of $795,000.
Link to storyFree-agent PK Ramiz Ahmed (UFL) signed an undisclosed contract with the Washington Commanders on Tuesday, June 4.
Footballguys view: The Commanders needed a kicker after cutting Brandon McManus on Sunday. Ahmed spent part of the 2024 spring season with the Birmingham Stallions after Chris Blewitt was injured. Ahmed went 10-for-13, including 4-for-7 from beyond 40 yards. He holds the record for the longest field goal in USFL history with a 61-yarder after playing for both the Pittsburgh Maulers and New Jersey Generals. He has never attempted an NFL field goal or PAT but did handle kickoffs in one game for the Packers. |
Cleveland Browns PK Lucas Havrisik was waived on Tuesday, June 4.
Footballguys view: Cleveland still has Dustin Hopkins and Cade York on the roster at kicker. Havrisik appeared in nine games for the Rams in 2023, connecting on 15-of-20 field goals and 19-of-22 extra points. He has spent time on the practice squads of the Colts (2022) and the Browns (2023). |
Washington Commanders PK Brandon McManus was released on Sunday, June 2. The move comes in the wake of sexual assault allegations against the kicker.
Footballguys view: Washington had signed McManus to a one-year, $3.6 million deal this offseason, opting not to re-sign Joey Slye, who joined the Patriots. The Commanders will be in the market for a new kicker. |

Los Angeles Rams third-round draft choice RB Blake Corum, sixth-round draft choice DT Tyler X. Davis, sixth-round draft choice PK Joshua Karty, sixth-round draft choice C Beaux Limmer, sixth-round draft choice WR Jordan Whittington and seventh-round draft choice OT KT Leveston signed four-year contracts with the Rams Monday, May 13. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Coming off a productive career at Michigan, Corum is expected to complement Kyren Williams in Los Angeles. The question is whether the newcomer will become a limiting factor for Williams, who is RB8 on the Footballguys 2024 Draft Rankings. Williams finished last year as fantasy's RB7, but volume was the key to his success. At this point, Corum's possible impact is something to watch as the Rams enter training camp and the exhibition season. |
Minnesota Vikings sixth-round draft choice PK Will Reichard (Alabama), seventh-round draft choice OL Michael Jurgens (Wake Forest) and seventh-round draft choice DL Levi Drake Rodriguez (Texas A&M - Commerce) signed four-year contracts on Friday, May 10. Financial terms of the deals were not immediately disclosed.
Footballguys view: Reichard is the all-time leading scoring in college football history, and he was the first kicker drafted in April. He only has to beat out 2023 all-XFL kicker John Parker Romo to start for the Vikings this season. |
