Chiefs | Kansas City seeking to trade Wanya Morris Tue Jun 9, 08:20 PM
The Kansas City and OT Wanya Morris have agreed to explore trade options, per a Tuesday, June 9 report.
Link to storyKansas City Chiefs S Marlen Sewell was reportedly waived by the Chiefs, according to a source on Tuesday, June 9.
Link to storyKansas City Chiefs RB Emari Demercado has consistently been the RB2 behind free-agent acquisition Kenneth Walker III in solo drills and also, 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills in OTAs, according to Charles Goldman of AtoZ Sports on Monday, June 8.
Footballguys view: Goldman reminded readers that Demercado has been written off a bit because of the addition of Emmett Johnson in the 2026 NFL Draft. However, the coaching staff still appears to be very high on him and his abilities. Things can obviously change throughout the course of an offseason, but Goldman believes that after OTAs it feels like Demercado is closer to RB2 in Kansas City than any other prospect.
Free-agent CB L'Jarius Sneed (Titans) agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs Monday, June 8, worth as much as $5 million.
Footballguys view: Sneed was a 2020 fourth-round pick by the Chiefs, and he helped them win a pair of Super Bowls in his four years in Kansas City. He was traded to the Titans before the 2024 season, but he only played 12 games over two years with the team due to injuries, and he was released in March. The Chiefs invested a 2026 first-round pick in CB Mansoor Delane, but still had a need at the position after parting ways with Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson.

Kansas City Chiefs first-round draft choice CB Mansoor Delane agreed to terms on a four-year contract with the Chiefs Monday, June 8, worth $41.9 million. The deal includes a fifth-year option.
Footballguys view: Delane joins the Chiefs after an offseason that saw them part ways with several cornerbacks, including Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson. That puts the LSU product on track for a significant role right out of the gate in Kansas City.
Kansas City Chiefs first-round draft choice DT Peter Woods agreed to terms on a four-year contract with the Chiefs Monday, June 8, worth $18 million. The deal includes a fifth-year option.
Footballguys view: Woods, 21, was selected with the No. 29 overall pick in the first round. It was the pick the Chiefs acquired from the Rams as part of the deal for cornerback Trent McDuffie. Having played his college ball at Clemson, Woods was a first-team All-ACC selection in 2025.
Kansas City Chiefs WR Jalen Royals has performed well in his additional reps with the first-team offense during OTAs, according to head coach Andy Reid. 'He looks strong out here and is running well. It's great for him and the quarterbacks to see what he is all about on repeated reps,' Reid said.
Footballguys view: The 2025 fourth round pick was having a good first training camp but knee issues slowed him down at the beginning of the season. He has a similar skillset to Rashee Rice and the team could see him as a future replacement with Rice's unreliable off-field profile. Royals shouldn't be on the waiver wire in dynasty leagues and could become a consideration in redraft leagues if Rice has any problems getting back in action after spending time in jail following knee surgery in May.
Kansas City Chiefs TE Jake Briningstool (undisclosed) did not participate in the voluntary workout Wednesday, June 3.
Link to storyKansas City Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy has performed well during offseason workouts and seems to be more comfortable entering his third season, according to head coach Andy Reid.
Footballguys view: Worthy can fly down the field with blazing speed, but it takes more than that to make plays at the wide receiver position in the pros. Receivers usually take three years to get going in the NFL, so Worthy is certainly a player who could post better-than-expected numbers in 2026. Wide receivers coach Chad O'Shea said he has been impressed with how Worthy has been catching the ball during workouts.
Free-agent CB L'Jarius Sneed (Titans) is meeting with the Kansas City Chiefs Thursday, June 4.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) took part in competitive 7-on-7 drills during his third consecutive day of practice Friday, May 29. However, he was held out of participating in full 11-on-11 team periods as a precautionary measure by head coach Andy Reid.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) told the media on Thursday, May 28, that he is working towards returning for the team's training camp.
Footballguys view: Despite being only six months removed from surgery to repair his torn ACL, Mahomes appears to be progressing rapidly in his recovery and was already back on the field throwing during OTAs this week -- something head coach Andy Reid addressed on Thursday. "He's busted his tail to put himself in this position," Reid said. The exact timeline for Mahomes' return remains undecided, though the goal is still for him to be ready by Week 1. With roughly three months remaining before the season begins, there is still plenty of time for him to ramp up further. Stay tuned.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy was seen wearing a non-contact jersey at the team's OTAs on Thursday, May 28. No injury was disclosed for the reason of wearing the jersey.
Footballguys view: According to the Kansas City star, Worthy underwent offseason shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. He finished with 42 receptions for 532 yards and one touchdown in 2025, his second season in the NFL. The Star's Blair Kerkhoff reports that Worthy still managed to flash on some highlight receptions from Patrick Mahomes, also in a non-contact jersey in his return from a torn ACL, during Thursday's 7-on-7 drills.
Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes participated in the team's OTA on Tuesday, May 26, according to a video posted by the Chiefs.
Footballguys view: It is unclear in what capacity Mahomes participated in OTAs, but just being on the field dropping back to pass is a positive sign. He was wearing a brace that covered his entire left leg. The Chiefs open their season on Sept. 14 against the Broncos on Monday Night Football, just a day before Mahomes will have reached the nine-month recovery timetable for his injury. The two-time MVP has made it abundantly clear he wants to play Week 1 when the Chiefs take on the defending AFC West champs. So far, Mahomes appears to be on track.

Updating previous reports, Kansas City Chiefs WR Rashee Rice could face a suspension of up to four games for violating the personal conduct policy. The policy has a provision that applies to violations of the law regarding 'substances of abuse,' which includes marijuana. It allows the commissioner to suspend the player for up to four games.
Footballguys view: As PFT's Mike Florio suggests, the NFL may decide that 30 days in jail is enough. Rice will miss the most important part of the offseason program. He'll miss the mandatory minicamp and likely be fined upwards of $100,000. He won't be able to rehab his recent knee surgery. Or the league may decide that Rice caught a break with last year's six-game suspension, given the behavior that caused it. For now, the league is saying nothing. In time, it will become clear whether the league does or doesn't plan to sideline Rice to start the 2026 season. Stay tuned.

Kansas City Chiefs second-round draft choice DE R Mason Thomas signed a four-year contract with the Chiefs Thursday, May 21. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Thomas is an edge rush demon who might be limited to that role because of his size a la Bruce Irvin. He might be the best pure edge rusher in the 2026 draft, and could also make an instant impact on a team that is in a Super Bowl window. Whether that will translate to IDP league value depends on Thomas's ability to stay on the field on early downs.
Kansas City Chiefs fourth-round draft choice CB Jadon Canady signed a four-year contract with the Chiefs Wednesday, May 20. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Link to storyOne week before being ordered to serve 30 days in jail, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice underwent a clean-up surgery on his right knee to remove loose debris that was causing inflammation and now is expected to sideline him two months, league sources told ESPN.
Footballguys view: Rice underwent the surgery last week in Dallas, sources said, but he did it before knowing that he would be sentenced after violating the terms of his probation for his role in a crash that left multiple people injured on a Dallas highway two years ago. Now Rice is in a Dallas County jail and will be unable to get the type of medical attention and rehab that could have expedited his return from his recent knee surgery. Rice still is expected to be ready for training camp later this summer, but he also is facing the uncertainty of having to recover while in jail. We'll continue to monitor.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Rashee Rice violated his parole by testing positive for marijuana on Tuesday, May 19. He will serve 30 days in jail and will miss the team's OTAs and mandatory mini-camp.
Footballguys view: If missed OTA and minicamp sessions are as bad as it gets, this could be forgotten in September. Rice missed the first six games of 2025 due to the suspension for his role in the six-car crash that led to his probation. He finished the year with 53 receptions, 571 yards, and five touchdowns, missing the final few games due to a concussion. The possibility of league discipline is the issue now. Earlier this year, Rice was accused of domestic assault. The NFL investigated and determined Rice would not be suspended for a second time. Could that change? Stay tuned.

Kansas City Chiefs CB Jadon Canady, a Day 3 selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, could contend for the nickel cornerback job in defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's defense. Canady is considered athletic and smart enough to challenge for a job as a rookie.
Link to storyKansas City Chiefs RB Kenneth Walker III said he has been spending time with QB Patrick Mahomes this offseason and believes he will be more involved in the passing game with the Chiefs.
Footballguys view: Walker has earned a reputation as a run-first back in his four NFL seasons, averaging fewer than 40 catches and 300 yards receiving per year over four seasons in Seattle. But Walker has been spending time with Patrick Mahomes this offseason trying to get ready for an expanded role as a pass-catcher -- and, over the past five years, three different KC RBs have had at least 40 receptions in a season. Two of those seasons came with OC Eric Bieniemy. The return of Bieniemy could mean more opportunities for Walker.
Over the weekend, Chiefs coach Andy Reid noted that quarterback Patrick Mahomes will likely be able to participate in OTAs in some capacity, despite tearing his ACL in December. Kansas City General Manager Brett Veach also spoke over the weekend, noting just how much progress Mahomes has made in his recovery. "He's way ahead of schedule," Veach said of Mahomes. "I think the biggest challenge we're going to have is protecting him against himself, because I'm sure when we get to St. Joseph, Missouri, for training camp, he's going to want to be full go."
Footballguys view: Veach was quick to add, "We're going to have to hold him back a little. And again, I don't want to put a timetable on it. But I think you guys know the kind of person and competitor Pat is, and I would say, we're in a really good place right now." Reid hinted that Mahomes could open camp on the physically unable to perform list. But as PFT suggests, with the way Veach described Mahomes' progress in his rehab, Mahomes is doing everything he can to be on the field as a full participant in late July.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Emmett Johnson signed a four-year deal with the team on Tuesday, May 16. No financial terms of the deal were disclosed.
Footballguys view: As Footballguy Dave Kluge noted in the 2026 Rookie Draft Guide, Johnson could be the Chiefs' primary pass catcher. Ken Walker III hasn't displayed a consistent ability to draw targets through his career, and Andy Reid likes to have designated roles for his running backs. There's a narrow path that needs to play a valuable role. But, Kluge added, "The floor for Johnson is low. He fell to Day 3 and doesn't have the best athletic profile. In a weak rookie class overall, he's worth a late-round dart throw in deep leagues, but not without downside."
Free-agent S Marlen Sewell and OL Khalil Benson were signed by the Kansas City Chiefs following their rookie camp. The Chiefs also waived DT Ethan Hurkett and DT Zacch Pickens.

Undrafted free-agent WR Xavier Loyd (Missouri) signed an undisclosed deal with the Kansas City Chiefs Monday, May 4. QB Jake Haener was released.

Former Fresno State QB EJ Warner, son of NFL Hall of Fame QB Kurt Warner, was at a tryout over the weekend with the Kansas City at rookie minicamp.
Link to storyUpdating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) is on track to participate in organized team activities (OTAs), even if it is in a limited capacity. 'He is in a good position to be able to do some things,' head coach Andy Reid said. 'If he can do some things, [he'll do it]. Phase 2 [of the offseason program], remember, there's no contact and there's no offense versus defense. It's Phase 3 that you get into that. ... He's in a position where he can do everything, I think.'
Footballguys view: According to ESPN.com's Nate Taylor, Mahomes has spent most days since his procedure inside the Chiefs' training facility as part of his rehab. In late March, Mahomes posted a four-second social media clip of him throwing the ball again inside a training gym. Since then, Mahomes has continued to increase his workout sessions. If he avoids landing on the physically unable to perform at the start of training camp, it would be a good sign for his chances of being in the lineup when the Chiefs take the field in Week 1 of the regular season.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) is making progress in his recovery but head coach Andy Reid said he is not sure if Mahomes will be able to participate when offseason workouts begin.
Footballguys view: The Chiefs are going to be wisely cautious as the best quarterback in the game returns from this knee injury. There is currently some uncertainty in this situation, but that's going to clear up as training camp gets here later in the summer. If he does get work in minicamp and OTAs, Mahomes should be quite limited even though Reid said, "You just have to evaluate what you want to do there. But he's in a position where he can do everything, I think."

Updating previous reports, undrafted free-agent WR Jeff Caldwell (Cincinnati), WR Jacob DeJesus (California), WR Omari Evans (University of Washington), TE John Michael Gyllenborg (Wyoming), RB Jaydn Ott (Oklahoma) and RB E.J. Smith (Texas A&M) officially signed with the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, May 1. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Link to storyKansas City Chiefs general manager said the team signed RB Kenneth Walker III in order to 'establish the run' early on in the season.
Link to storyKansas City Chiefs RB ShunDerrick Powell was waived Wednesday, April 29.
Link to storyChiefs vice president of player personnel Ryne Nutt says the team was 'shocked' they could select RB Emmett Johnson in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
Footballguys view: According to SBNation's Ron Kopp Jr., Johnson is projected to be the immediate backup to free-agent addition Ken Walker III, who will handle the lead role. But don't be surprised if Johnson earns his way onto the field on pass downs or in other situations. While there's a path to a role here, Footballguy Dave Kluge, in the 2026 Rookie Draft Guide 3.0, suggests "the floor for Johnson is low."
Buffalo RB Al-Jay Henderson has received an invite to the rookie minicamp of the Kansas City Chiefs as a tryout player.
Link to storyOklahoma RB Jaydn Ott, an undrafted free agent, is signing with the Kansas City Chiefs, a source said Saturday, April 25. DeMarco Murray, a former Sooners standout, and running backs coach from 2020-25, is the current Chiefs RB coach, so he gets his guy.
Footballguys view: Chiefs fifth round pick Emmett Johnson Jr. is a very good running back in the Kareem Hunt mold, but Ott looked like one of the best backs in this class during his first two college seasons, only to get hurt and fall off of the map at the end of the last two. That his running back coach is on the Chiefs staff and vouched for means that we should be monitoring the news out of Kansas City about their rookie backs very closely.
Undrafted free-agent WR Jacob DeJesus (California) agreed to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, April 25, according to a source.
Link to storyTexas A&M RB E.J. Smith signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent Saturday, April 25, according to a source.
Link to storyCincinnati WR Jeff Caldwell signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent Saturday, April 25, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Caldwell's size (6'5" 216), speed (4.31 40), and leaping (42" vert 11'2" broad) athletic testing numbers might make you think he is Calvin Johnson, but the soccer convert is more like Calvin Klein as a wide receiver at this point. He needs a year or two to develop, but Caldwell is worth stashing in dynasty leagues if your bench is deep enough or you have practice squads.
Wyoming TE John Michael Gyllenborg signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent Saturday, April 25, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Gyllenborg was maybe the most athletic tight end in this year's class and he looks the part in his small sample size as a receiver, but he's a project who needs at least one redshirt year on the practice squad to prepare for the transition from Wyoming to the NFL. We monitor anyone who has a chance to play with Patrick Mahomes in the future.
