Jets | Carl Lawson on track for opener Mon Jun 27, 10:11 PM
New York Jets DE Carl Lawson (Achilles) is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season, according to ESPN.

Fourth-round draft choice DE Micheal Clemons (Texas A&M) signed a four-year contract worth $4.4 million - including a $896,000 signing bonus - with the New York Jets on Thursday, June 23.
Link to storyFourth-round draft choice DE Micheal Clemons (Texas A&M) signed a four-year contract with the New York Jets on Thursday, June 23. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.
Link to storyConnor Hughes, from The Athletic, reports New York Jets rookie RB Breece Hall is the 'Batman' to Michael Carter's 'Robin' in the offense.
Footballguys view: They'll use both but Hall is the lead back per this report. That makes sense as Hall is built to take punishment while Carter is a smaller back who can be used effectively in space. A second-round pick out of Iowa State in the 2022 NFL draft, Hall has good size and grinds down defenders as the game goes on. Hall has a current ADP of RB37 (8.10) in 12-team PPR leagues...but expect that to rise during training camp and the preseason. |

New York Jets WR Garrett Wilson is 'projected as an immediate contributor' in the offense, in the opinion of ESPN's Rich Cimini. 'Wilson has a ways to go in terms of mastering the route tree, but there's no doubt about his physical traits. The one that jumps out is his body control, the ability to adjust to off-target throws. He projects as an immediate contributor in the wide receiver rotation.'
Footballguys view: Wilson was arguably the best wide receiver in the 2022 NFL draft. He's got great ability after the catch, and Wilson has elite-level body control. Wilson has hands, good concentration and knows how to work the sideline or back of the end zone. Many in the scouting community compared him to Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb. There is no doubt Wilson can play, but there is plenty of concern about his QB Zach Wilson. |
New York Jets DE Carl Lawson (Achilles) said he is 'good to go' and feels ready to return to full practices whenever he is cleared by trainers. 'I'll be ready to go anytime my name is called,' Lawson said during June minicamp.

New York Jets WR Jeff Smith worked with the first-team offense and was the 'unquestioned star' of minicamp, according to Connor Hughes of The Athletic.
Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Boston College in 2019, Smith has been working his way up the ranks with the Jets during that time. He had only eight catches for 113 yards in eight games last season, but clearly he's turning heads at mandatory minicamp. Smith is working for a spot on the 53-man roster, but he's buried on the depth chart behind Garrett Wilson, Corey Davis, and Elijah Moore. Keep an eye on Smith in super deep dynasty formats. |

New York Jets OT Mekhi Becton (knee) says his knee is good to go and he expects to be on the field for training camp in late July, he said on Wednesday, June 15. Becton, who is not practicing at mandatory minicamp, also noted he's open to playing left or right tackle.
Link to storyNew York Jets CB D.J. Reed (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Tuesday, June 14, because of an unknown reason. CB Sauce Gardner worked with the first-team defense in his place.

Updating a previous report, New York Jets OT Mekhi Becton (undisclosed) is not participating in practice this week because he is still recovering from some injuries, according to offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur.
Link to storyUpdating a previous report, New York Jets OT Mekhi Becton joined the team at mandatory minicamp Tuesday, June 14. Becton missed organized team activities due to the birth of his child.

New York Jets QB Zach Wilson struggled with accuracy in the practice session Wednesday, June 1. His first four passes were off the mark before he made three throws over the middle. He looked poised and confident in the pocket on the throws that didn't include pressure.
Footballguys view: Lack of poise when playing under duress was the top concern for Wilson during his college career at BYU. The Jets have put more weapons around Wilson this season, and he simply needs to play better. It's super early - we're not even to mandatory minicamp - but Wilson is nearly in a make-or-break season. Yes, it's only his second season in the NFL but the Jets have already tried to upgrade the position but have fallen short (they were rumored to be interested in Russell Wilson). The young passer needs to play better this year or else the team will do more to replace him. |

New York Jets WR Garrett Wilson had his work habits praised by offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur on Wednesday, June 1. 'He is so locked in,' LaFleur said.
Footballguys view: Ever since he showed up on campus at Ohio State, Wilson carried himself as a professional so this report is no surprise. Wilson reminds many in the scouting community of CeeDee Lamb because of his speed and ability to make tough catches near the sidelines or back of the end zone. |
New York Jets WR Denzel Mims received praise from head coach Robert Saleh on Wednesday, June 1. 'He's in fantastic shape,' Saleh noted. 'He's a lot further along today than he was a year ago.'
Footballguys view: Mims hasn't done much with the Jets over the last two years, but this offseason there have been plenty of praise about his ability. A second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft, Mims had three catches in three starts last year for the Jets - and he finished his sophomore season with only eight catches for 133 yards. Mims doesn't play special teams which hinders his ability of making the 53-man roster this year as the no.5 (at best) wide receiver on the depth chart. |

Free-agent LB Kwon Alexander (Saints) still has interest from the New York Jets.

New York Jets WR Rodney Adams (undisclosed) went unclaimed on waivers and reverted to the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list Tuesday, May 24.
Link to storyRodney Adams player page
New York Jets WR Lawrence Cager is moving to tight end and has been doing drills at the position in organized team activities.
Footballguys view: Cager was undrafted out of the University of Georgia in 2020. He's a big-bodied possession receiver who is not afraid to go over the middle and can work all three levels of the defense. A move to tight end is an interesting one given his ball skills, size and wingspan. Therefore, in crazy deep dynasty formats we'll keep an eye on Cager's development. |

New York Jets QB Zach Wilson told reporters Tuesday, May 24, that he gained 13 pounds this offseason and currently weighs 221 pounds. He added that he wants to play at around 218 pounds.
Footballguys view: Wilson has to be more durable in order to be the franchise quarterback the Jets envisioned when they selected him no.2 overall in the 2021 NFL draft. It was about a week ago Jets coach Robert Saleh said Wilson "looks beefy -- in a good way." Wilson has put on good weight, and now it's time for that to translate to the field. As a rookie in 2021, Wilson was able to get through 13 games - finishing 3-10 as a starter. A PCL injury caused him to miss time, and the Jets offense showed more life when he wasn't on the field. That's got to change this season or else the Jets will be looking elsewhere for a quarterback in 2023. |

Free-agent WR DJ Montgomery (Jets) signed an undisclosed contract with the New York Jets on Monday, May 23. The Jets also waived WR Rodney Adams.

Third-round draft choice TE Jeremy Ruckert (Ohio State) signed a four-year contract worth a reported $5 million - including a signing bonus worth 'about' $849,000 - with the New York Jets on Monday, May 23, according to SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.
Footballguys view: Ruckert is known as a highly competitive player who reminds some in the scouting community of Adam Trautman. He's a strong/physical player who is not afraid to mix it up after the catch or as a blocker. Ruckert might be one of those players who is a better pro than he was in college. From a fantasy perspective, we're not trusting many from the Jets passing attack. However, we will watch Ruckert in dynasty formats and see how his chemistry builds with QB Zach Wilson. |
Updating a previous report, New York Jets first-round pick WR Garrett Wilson signed a four-year contract worth $20.554 million on Wednesday, May 18. The deal includes a fifth-year team option and a $12.128 million signing bonus.
Footballguys view: Wilson can flat out fly, and that's what the Jets are going to ask him to do. He's there to get open deep, but he can take short passes and turn them into long gains. Wilson reminds some in the scouting community of CeeDee Lamb because of his speed, body control and concentration. The Jets have put more weapons around QB Zach Wilson, and Garrett Wilson could be a favorite. |
New York Jets WR Garrett Wilson agreed to terms on a fully guaranteed four-year, $20.55 million rookie contract on Wednesday, May 18, per source. The deal will carry a fifth-year team option.
Footballguys view: Wilson will definitely get on the field in three wide sets, but he'll have to overcome one of Corey Davis and Elijah Moore to be a true starter in the Jets offense. He's probably more of a wait and see prospect in redraft leagues with Zach Wilson still learning the ropes at quarterback entering his second year. |
New York Jets first-round draft choice DE Jermaine Johnson signed a four-year contract with the Jets Monday, May 16. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal includes a fifth-year option.

Rich Cimini, from ESPN.com, reports New York Jets QB Zach Wilson is looking 'beefy...in a good way' according to head coach Robert Saleh.
Footballguys view: Wilson is entering his second season with the expectations that he can be the franchise quarterback the team wanted when they selected him no.2 overall in the 2021 NFL draft. The team has put more playmakers around him on offense, so it will now be on Wilson to stay healthy and start producing at a high level. |

New York Jets WR Elijah Moore ranked sixth in the NFL with 459 receiving yards and tied for eighth with 34 receptions from Week 8 to Week 13 last season.
Footballguys view: Anyone who watched Moore in college, or last year with the Jets, knows he can move the chains with big plays. We're excited to see what second-year QB Zach Wilson can do as he continues to develop as a pro. Moore has plenty of flex appeal for Fantasy GMs as a primary weapon in the Jets passing attack. |

Free-agent DT Larry Ogunjobi (Bengals) spent the last two days visiting with the New York Jets, according to a source.

New York Jets DE Carl Lawson (Achilles) will be able to participate in individual workouts this offseason but will be held out of the team drills, according to head coach Robert Saleh.

Free-agent WR Calvin Jackson (Washington State) signed an undisclosed contract with the New York Jets on Monday, May 9.
Link to storyUndrafted free-agent WR Calvin Jackson Jr. (Washington State) and free-agent OT Derrick Kelly (Giants) to undisclosed contracts. TE Brandon Dillon and WR DJ Montgomery were waived.
Footballguys view: Calvin Jackson didn't do much with the Cougars until 2021. First, he was able to stay healthy - appearing in as many games last year as he had the previous three seasons in Pullman. Second, Jackson was moved from the outside to the slot and that fit his game. Jackson recorded 66 receptions for 978 yards and seven touchdowns in 2021. We'll monitor him in crazy deep dynasty formats. |

New York Jets OG Alijah Vera-Tucker had a 15-game streak of not allowing a sack as a rookie in 2021.
Link to storyFree-agent OG Greg Van Roten (Jets) could re-sign with the New York Jets if he is not able to find a starting job with another team, according to head coach Robert Saleh.
Link to storyNew York Jets QB Zach Wilson drew praise from head coach Robert Saleh on Saturday, May 7. Saleh says Wilson 'looks good' and 'beefy' after adding more to his frame, while also noting it hasn't impacted his throwing. In addition, Saleh praised Wilson for his 'really good command' of the offense. 'There's little things that he's doing where you're seeing a little more security. And he's not a rookie, so he's being a little more vocal. So, he looks good. He's getting more comfortable.'
Footballguys view: Zach Wilson enters a critical Year 2 to build upon his sporadic flashes in 2021. The Jets, unlike the Bears with Justin Fields, have spent significant capital surrounding Wilson with skill position weapons, including Garrett Wilson (Round 1) and Jeremy Ruckert (Round 3) in this year's draft. |
Zach Wilson player page
New York Jets CB Sauce Gardner signed his rookie deal, the team announced Saturday, May 7. The four-year deal is worth $33.45 million with a $21.5 million signing bonus, and there is a team fifth-year option, per the Collective Bargaining Agreement protocols.
Link to storyNew York Jets TE Jeremy Ruckert (foot) has been dealing with an unspecified foot injury and will be reevaluated next week, head coach Robert Saleh revealed on Saturday, May 7. Saleh says the Jets are 'hoping' the rookie will be able to get some work in this spring.
Footballguys view: Rookie tight ends are notably slow-progressing historically and Jeremy Ruckert begins his ramp-up to Week 1 not on the healthy track. Expect veterans C.J. Uzomah and Tyler Conklin to be firmly ahead of the Ohio State rookie. The upside of the tight ends will hinge on the progression of second-year quarterback Zach Wilson. |
New York Jets DB Zane Lewis (undisclosed) was waived with a failed physical designation Friday, May 6. The Jets also waived RB Austin Walter and OG Isaiah Williams.
Link to storyAustin Walter player page
New York Jets OG Greg Van Roten was released on Friday, May 6.
Footballguys view: The team saves 3.5 million with the move. Free agent signing Laken Tomlinson will replace Van Roten in the starting lineup, while the underrated Nate Herbig, just claimed from Philadelphia, will be the top backup at guard. Van Roten should catch on somewhere and maybe even have a chance to start. |
Free-agent OL Nate Herbig (Eagles) was claimed off waivers by the New York Jets on Thursday, May 5.
Link to storyNew York Jets TE Jeremy Ruckert (foot) was not able to work out for teams before the 2022 NFL Draft because of a foot injury, but general manager Joe Douglas said Ruckert is not expected to miss much time.
Footballguys view: Ruckert is a big-bodied tight end who works well as a blocker and can rip away passes as a receiver. A former soccer goalie from his youth, Ruckert adjusts to passes with ease and has great flexibility when doing so. As a rookie, Ruckert will work to establish himself in the pecking order with C.J. Uzomah and Tyler Conklin. |
Connor Hughes, from The Athletic, believes the New York Jets will use rookie Breece Hall and second-year RB Michael Carter as a 1-2 punch this season.
Footballguys view: Carter is too good to ride the bench now that the team selected arguably the best running back in the 2022 NFL draft. Hall brings power to the field, and he's built to handle a large workload. However, Carter is an explosive player who can make defenders look silly in space. Hall is the 1.01 in rookie drafts, and Fantasy GMs are looking forward to him posting RB2 numbers in 2022. Carter has flex appeal in PPR formats. |

Undrafted free-agent QB Liam Welch (Samford) was invited to the New York Jets' rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, per a source.
Link to storyUndrafted free agents LB DQ Thomas (Middle Tennessee State), DT CJ Brewer (Coastal Carolina), WR Irvin Charles (Penn State), DT Savion Williams (Florida A&M), CB Allen George (Vanderbilt), WR Keshunn Abram (Kent State), RB DeAndre Torrey (North Texas) and S Tony X. Adams (Illinois) agreed to terms with the New York Jets Sunday, April 30.
Link to storyUndrafted free-agent RB Zonovan Knight (North Carolina State) agreed to terms with the New York Jets Saturday, April 30, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Link to storyOhio State TE Jeremy Ruckert was selected by the New York Jets with the 101st overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Footballguys view: Ruckert is a big-bodied tight end who does a good job of plucking passes out of the air. His college production won't blow you away (only two games with more than 50 yards receiving in four years) but the tools are there for him to be a better pro if healthy. Ruckert suffered plantar fasciitis at the Senior Bowl and needs to get that cleared up before he can show off his skills for the Jets. |
Iowa State RB Breece Hall was selected by the New York Jets with the 36th overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Footballguys view: Hall was arguably the best running back in this draft class. He's a big back who wins with power and relentlessness. Hall can be the bellcow back the Jets have been looking for with Michael Carter working as a receiving/change-of-pace back. |
San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel has been a trade target for the New York Jets, and the Jets offered the 10th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and a fifth-round pick in exchange for Samuel and a second-round pick before the draft, according to The Athletic's Matt Barrows.

Updating an ongoing story, the New York Jets made a trade offer for San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel on Thursday, April 28, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. San Francisco declined the No. 10 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and an unspecified pick swap.
