Atlanta Falcons LB Sean Weatherspoon is emerging as one of the true, vocal leaders on defense. His role as a leader will be especially important to MLB Akeem Dent, who is atop the depth chart at the position with LB Lofa Tatupu (pectoral) sidelined. '(Weatherspoon) has played a lot of football games, he's going to be able to help Akeem Dent in his maturation process because he's just a year or two removed from what Akeem's going to be going through this year,' head coach Mike Smith said.

Atlanta Falcons LB Akeem Dent almost certainly will be a two-down defender in the scheme being implemented by new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan. Dent has been thrust into a starting role, with 13-year LB Mike Peterson as his backup, following the injury to LB Lofa Tatupu (pectoral).

The Atlanta Falcons have released LB Lofa Tatupu.
Footballguys view: Tatupu had a shot to win the team's middle linebacker job, but a torn pec sidelined him for the season and might have ended his career. |

Atlanta Falcons LB Lofa Tatupu (pectoral) will miss the entire 2012 season with a torn pectoral muscle.
Footballguys view: Tatupu missed all of last season due to chronic knee injuries and was trying to make a comeback this year with the Falcons. He agreed to a two-year $5.75MM contract back in March, but only $600k was guaranteed. We see second-year LB Akeem Dent as the favorite to start at the Middle Linebacker position. |

The chances for LB Akeem Dent to start in Week 1 as the middle linebacker increased dramatically when LB Lofa Tatupu (pectoral) suffered an injury lifting weights. Tatupu will meet with a specialist, and it's uncertain how much time he'll miss just yet. However, he is likely to miss the start of training camp at the least.

Atlanta Falcons LB Lofa Tatupu (pectoral) is scheduled to meet with Dr. James Andrews Monday, July 23, to determine the extent of his pectoral injury.
Footballguys view: It's never a good sign when a player has to meet with Dr. Andrews. Tatupu is unlikely to participate in training camp, and could begin the season on the PUP list. |

Atlanta Falcons LB Lofa Tatupu (pectoral) suffered a pectoral injury while working out, according to head coach Mike Smith. 'Lofa sustained a pectoral injury while working out,' Smith said. 'At this point, we do not know the extent of the injury, but we expect to have more information early next week.' The Falcons open training camp Thursday, July 26.
Footballguys view: The extent of the injury is unknown at this time, but some feel it is considered serious. Tatupu was trying to comeback after missing all of last season due to knee injuries. He could begin the season on the PUP list if the pectoral muscle is torn. Akeem Dent is likely to be the starting Middle Linebacker for the Falcons when the regular season begins. |

Atlanta Falcons LB Akeem Dent said he has been watching film with LB Lofa Tatupu this offseason and that Tatupu has been helping understand things even though the two are expected to compete for the middle linebacker job during training camp. 'We're learning together, watching film, making corrections,' Dent said. 'He's helping me out a lot in terms of trying to understand everything. A guy like Lofa, that has been to the Pro Bowl and an All-Pro player, it's been great for me. I'm a competitor. I know he's a competitor also, but at the end of the day it's good for the Falcons to have two guys that will be ready to play at any point.'

Atlanta Falcons LB Lofa Tatupu said he did not play last season because he could not find a team to sign him and it had nothing to do with his previous injuries.
Footballguys view: Tatupu admits that at one point he stopped working out and was considering other life choices. The former All-Pro Linebacker is trying to make a comeback this year, but has a tough task ahead of him as he competes with 2011 third-round pick Akeem Dent. |

Footballguys view: 2011 third-round pick Akeem Dent would be the other main candidate to take over the spot. We look forward to seeing Tatupu gained any of his burst back after sitting out the 2011 season. |

Free-agent LB Lofa Tatupu (Seahawks) has been meeting with teams and the teams are showing more concern about his ability to stay healthy for a season than they are his playing ability at this point.
Footballguys view: Teams should be concerned with Tatupu because of the concussion and knee problems he had in his career. |

The Tennessee Titans hosted free-agent LB Lofa Tatupu (Seahawks) for a visit Tuesday, Feb. 14. He visited with the New Orleans Saints Monday, Feb. 13.
Footballguys view: The Titans had Colin McCarthy emerge as a quality young MLB last year after one-year signee Barrett Ruud was hurt, but veteran depth behind the second-year player will be a need. |

Free-agent LB Lofa Tatupu (Seahawks) (knee) sat out the 2011 season due to knee problems, but a source close to the situation says the player plans a comeback for 2012. 'It was just injury-related,' the source said. 'He wasn't 100 percent and he didn't feel he was ready to go.' Tatupu spent the season rehabbing his knee, working out and spending time with his family, which includes his infant son.

Free-agent LB Lofa Tatupu (Seahawks) (knee) is planning a comeback, and the Philadelphia Eagles seem like a logical fit for him in 2012. The Eagles use a 4-3 defensive scheme, and they could use an upgrade to its inexperience linebacker corps.

The New York Giants might look into signing LB Lofa Tatupu (Seahawks), as they search to bolster their middle linebacker position.
Footballguys view: Tatupu has been looking for work since he decided not to accept a pay cut from the Seahawks. Like Dhani Jones, he could be worth a pickup in deep IDP leagues if he gets signed. |

The Oakland Raiders are still talking with free-agent LB Lofa Tatupu (Seahawks).
Footballguys view: The move would be curious if Oakland follows through with it because they used a top 10 pick on an MLB last year and they are set at OLB right now. It is possible that a signing of Tatupu would signal more 3-4 front snaps for the Oakland defense, and they have the personnel to make that front work for the most part. |

The Seattle Seahawks released LB Lofa Tatupu because they did not believe he fit in what they wanted to do on defense moving forward. The Seahawks want to use more three-man fronts on defense and many believe Tatupu can only play middle linebacker in a 4-3 defensive alignment.
Footballguys view: Tatupu's checkered injury history and steady decline after his amazing rookie season could also have something to do with it. |

Oakland Raiders head coach Hue Jackson said Monday, Aug. 1, that LB Rolando McClain is the team's starting middle linebacker, hinting that free-agent LB Lofa Tatupu (Seahawks) would have to change positions if he signed with the team.
Footballguys view: Tatupu could maybe play outside opposite new multimillionaire Kamerion Wimbley? Either way, Tatupu's fantasy value is waning. |

The Washington Redskins are scheduled to meet with free-agent LB Lofa Tatupu (Seahawks) and CB Kelvin Hayden (Colts) this week.
Footballguys view: The Redskins have a gaping hole next to London Fletcher at ILB with Rocky McIntosh a free agent and the club showing little interest in re-signing him. Tatupu would make sense, but his durability is an issue. Dan Snyder is just the type of owner to overpay a player on the decline like Tatupu. |

The Oakland Raiders are scheduled to meet with free-agent LB Lofa Tatupu (Seahwks) Monday, Aug. 1.
Footballguys view: This has set off speculation that the Raiders may switch to a 3-4 front, with guys like Kamerion Wimbley and Quentin Groves playing OLB and Tatupu next to Rolando McClain inside. Tatupu is in a thin market with so many ILBs signed over the weekend. |

Updating a previous report, the Seattle Seahawks have released LB Lofa Tatupu.
Footballguys view: David Hawthorne becomes an instant IDP stud, top 10, if not top 5 LB. Tatupu is one of the better ILBs on the free agent market now, but a lot of teams that had need at the position just signed an option in the middle today. Tatupu might have lost a job by not outright rejecting restructuring earlier. |
