Still, asked on Tuesday whether he's preparing Justin Fields to start the Week 5 Sunday night home game against the Cowboys, Tomlin said, "Yes, I am." |

Steelers | Russell Wilson has dim outlook this week Tue Sep 10, 12:49 PM
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson (calf) is slated to be limited in practice Wednesday, Sept. 11, and the team is preparing as if QB Justin Fields will start in Week 2.
Footballguys view: Wilson, who aggravated his calf injury last week and was designated as the emergency quarterback for the Steelers' opener against the Atlanta Falcons, "feels better today than over the weekend," Tomlin said Tuesday. The coach said the team would monitor Wilson's level and quality of participation in practice and then analyze whether he can protect himself and be productive. Then they'll "ponder his inclusion," Tomlin said. We expect Fields to get this start, but we'll follow up as needed. |

Steelers | Russell Wilson not expected to play Sat Sep 7, 06:37 PM
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson's (calf) chances of playing are 'very slim,' per sources on Saturday, Sept. 7.
Footballguys view: Wilson made the trip to Atlanta with teammates, and, according to Dulac, the quarterback still hopes to play against the Falcons. He'll continue to get treatment tonight and tomorrow morning. And while it doesn't look good, Wilson hasn't been ruled out yet. Justin Fields is standing by. |

Steelers | Russell Wilson making the trip Sat Sep 7, 02:15 PM
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson (calf) is making the trip to Atlanta with the team but remains questionable, per source on Saturday, Sept. 7.
Footballguys view: We'll see what Wilson looks like in pregame warmups. Not many Fantasy GMs will be relying on him anyway, but if Justin Fields is starting it will impact the production of the offense. Fields is a better rusher than Wilson, so if he's out there then it could take some rushing opportunities away from Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren. |

Steelers | Pittsburgh's Week 1 injury report Fri Sep 6, 03:51 PM
Pittsburgh Steelers OG Isaac Seumalo (pectoral) and DT Logan Lee (calf) did not practice all week and have been ruled out for Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons. WR Roman Wilson (ankle) was limited in practice all week but has also been ruled out. QB Russell Wilson (calf) was limited in practice for a second straight day on Friday, Sept. 6, and is listed as questionable. CB Cory Trice Jr. (groin), RB Jaylen Warren (hamstring), OT Troy Fautanu (knee) and TE Darnell Washington (knee) practiced in full on Friday and no longer appear on the injury report.
Footballguys view: Wilson is probably not 100%, and won't be very mobile if he does play. That sounds like a recipe for an aggravation of the injury, like what happened to Joe Burrow last year. We expect Justin Fields to start, and he's a viable superflex on his running ability alone. |

Steelers | Russell Wilson named the starter Wed Aug 28, 01:56 PM
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson will be the team's starter to begin the season, head coach Mike Tomlin announced on Wednesday, Aug. 28.
Footballguys view: Justin Fields didn't play well enough to beat out Wilson for the top spot. Wilson is not the same player he used to be, but he's a better starting option to begin the regular season. |
Russell Wilson player page
Steelers | Justin Fields still has a shot Tue Aug 20, 11:36 AM
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Justin Fields still has a chance to win the starting quarterback job, which is more open than ever, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. QB Russell Wilson was once a heavy favorite to win the job, but he has not done so yet.
Footballguys view: As big a deal as Fields winning the starting job would be for the Steelers, it might be an even bigger deal for fantasy investors, who can currently land Fields as QB25. Remember, he finished as QB7 and QB10 in the last two years as Chicago's starter. Player Profiler noted that Fields has ten Top-5 weekly finishes in 28 games played, much of that coming from his 1,800 rushing yards and 12 rushing TDs in that two-season run as the Bears starter. That's the kind of "Konami Code" player fantasy managers crave. But also, for a Pittsburgh offense that still has issues up front, the more mobile Fields might be a better answer than Wilson. We'll be watching this one closely. |

Steelers | Russell Wilson on track to play Thu Aug 15, 06:50 PM

Steelers | Russell Wilson could play next week Sat Aug 10, 09:14 AM
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson (calf) is expected to be available for the team's second preseason game against the Buffalo Bills Saturday, Aug. 17.
Footballguys view: Wilson needs to play in the second preseason game or the Steelers could just go with Justin Fields as their starter. Steelers HC Mike Tomlin has said this is 'very much a competition' between the two. In the preseason opener against the Texans, Fields completed 5-of-6 passes for 67 yards and rushed three times for two yards. |

Steelers | Justin Fields to start preseason opener Wed Aug 7, 10:38 AM
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Justin Fields will start the preseason opener while QB Russell Wilson (calf) will not play. Head coach Mike Tomin said that Wilson remains the QB1, but there is a competition taking place at quarterback.
Footballguys view: "Pole position" always implied that Wilson would begin in the lead, but might not be ahead at the end. Most reports about Fields have been positive and have him closing the gap. The Steelers surely see what Fields legs can provide, and he has been building chemistry with the receivers. Because he was already a solid QB1 in a bad Bears offense, Fields should be going ahead of Wilson in drafts, the only question is how high. |

Steelers | Russell Wilson inching closer Mon Aug 5, 12:45 AM
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson (calf) could be cleared to return to full practice this week, per sources on Sunday, Aug. 4.
Footballguys view: The Steelers have taken a cautious approach with Wilson's recovery. As a result, Justin Fields has gotten extra reps with the starters. It's easy to assume Wilson has the starting job all sewed up, but after visiting Steelers camp and talking to people there, ESPN.com's Dan Graziano is not so sure. Graziano noted the Steelers aren't financially committed to either player in a significant way, and the coaching staff has no prior attachment or preconceived notions about either. In that way, this is a unique quarterback competition that could still go either way. We'll be watching for more as Wilson gets back into the fray. |

Steelers | Russell Wilson update Mon Jul 29, 12:27 AM
Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson (calf) is expected to take part in some team periods for the first time next week, head coach Mike Tomlin said on Sunday, July 28.
Footballguys view: Wilson has been doing individual drills throughout the first four days of training camp. The Steelers have a day off on Monday and will have their first padded practice on Tuesday. During Wilson's absence, Justin Fields has been taking the first-team reps. Fields and Wilson are battling for the starting job, and while Fields didn't overtake Wilson in a few days, he did show he is a very capable quarterback. |
