Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that two Lions beat writers slammed the Dolphins performance in the two teams joint practice Wednesday. A to Z's Mike Payton said "Either the Dolphins are really bad or the Lions are just a juggernaut." The Athletic's Nick Baumgardner said: "As lopsided a joint NFL practice as I've ever seen."
Footballguys view: The Dolphins had trouble on both sides of the ball in a bad sign for their 2025 outlook. They had one of the most efficient offenses in 2023 and one of the most inefficient last year. It doesn't sound like they are reversing the negative momentum going into 2025. |

Minnesota Vikings WR Justin Jefferson (hamstring) is making progress in his recovery but will not participate in the joint practice with the New England Patriots this week, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell. Jefferson will be reevaluated next week.
Footballguys view: At this point, we should hope for Jefferson to be cleared to practice in full leading up to Week 1 and expect to get no clarity on the true severity of his injury. He has transcended his quarterbacks and JJ McCarthy could pleasantly surprise, so Jefferson won't fall far despite this injury, if he slides at all from his usual spot in the top 3. |

Link to storyCleveland Browns QB Shedeur Sanders (oblique) suffered an oblique injury during practice Wednesday, Aug. 13.
Link to storyCleveland Browns QB Dillon Gabriel (hamstring) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Aug. 11, and said he is feeling better.
Footballguys view: Gabriel is working to earn a spot on the depth chart behind Joe Flacco. The rookie is smart and knows how to read a defense, but he's got limitations to his game (size, deep passes tend to sail, etc). |
Cleveland Browns QB Shedeur Sanders could start the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 16, against the Philadelphia Eagles if QB Dillon Gabriel (hamstring) remains sidelined, according to head coach Kevin Stefanski.
Footballguys view: Sanders now has an oblique injury that knocked him out of practice on Wednesday. The Browns have a banged up group of quarterbacks, and while Sanders has looked the best it's too early to tell how the room is going to shape up. We believe Joe Flacco begins the year as the starter, and then who knows how long that lasts. |
New Orleans Saints OG Trevor Penning (foot) has been diagnosed with turf toe, which is typically a four-to-six-week injury.
Link to storyBuffalo Bills RB James Cook signed a four-year, $48 million extension Wednesday, Aug. 13. The deal includes $30 million guaranteed.
Footballguys view: The deal is finally done, and Cook is back out at practice ready to participate. Cook is now tied with Josh Jacobs for the sixth-highest annual average salary at the position. Fantasy GMs can breathe a sigh of relief with this deal done. Now, Cook's current ADP (RB14) could move up. Look for him near the turn at the end of the first or early second round. |
Updating an earlier report, Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love (thumb) underwent successful surgery on his left thumb Tuesday, Aug. 12, with the procedure going 'perfect,' per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Tom Silverstein.
Footballguys view: The team is hopeful Love can return to practice next week, though he will not play again during the remaining preseason games. "More importantly, he'll be ready for Week 1, and that's the most important thing," said Packers general manager Brian Gutenkunst. The GM says he doesn't expect this injury to be a long-term issue. |

Seattle Seahawks WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling will have a significant role in the offseason, according to offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. The OC added Tuesday, Aug. 12 that Valdes-Scantling has had 'a really good camp'.
Footballguys view: Reporters on the scene believe Valdes=Scantling has been struggling mightily. Kubiak will have a better idea, but he also might just be using coach speak here to talk up his guy. Rookie WR Tory Horton has been having a good camp, and he might get more work than MVS this year. |

New York Giants RB Rushawn Baker (undisclosed) was released from the Reserve/Injured list on Tuesday, Aug. 12, after reaching an injury settlement.
Link to storyLos Angeles Chargers RB Omarion Hampton will rotate with another back in Week 1 against the Kansas City Chiefs, even if RB Najee Harris (eye) isn't ready to start the season, offensive coordinator Greg Roman indicated Tuesday, Aug. 12.
Footballguys view: The Chargers should run the heck out of the ball this year, and that's going to come with two backs getting the workload. Hampton has the makings of a star in this league, but he will be splitting time and getting a breather. Harris should be that guy to work in tandem with the rookie in the Chargers backfield. |
New Orleans Saints WR Chris Tyree (undisclosed) was released from the Reserve/Injured list on Tuesday, Aug. 12, with an injury settlement.
