Buccaneers | Bucky Irving and Kenneth Gainwell seen in a similar way Tue May 12, 01:15 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Zac Robinson told the media that RB Bucky Irving and RB Kenneth Gainwell, 'can kind of match each other in certain ways with what they can do in the pass game.'

Tampa Bay Buccaneers third-round pick WR Ted Hurst could fill the X-receiver spot, according to offensive coordinator Zac Robinson. Hurst can run, has great hands and is an instinctual player, according to Robinson.
Footballguys view: According to Tampa Bay Times staffer Rick Stroud, Hurst "owned" the Bucs' first rookie minicamp, drawing the most targets and making the most catches over two days of practice. Hurst has big shoes to fill if he's going to handle the vacated Mike Evans role. But he has the size (6-4, 210 pounds) and speed (4.42) to be a true X receiver like Evans, who can stretch a defense both vertically and horizontally. Still, keep expectations in check as Hurst starts his career behind Emeka Egbuka, Chris Godwin Jr., and Jalen McMillan at the top of the depth chart.
Washington Commanders first-round pick LB Sonny Styles impressed at rookie minicamp. According to beat writer JP Finlay, Styles looked fluid, quick and smart. In seven-on-seven passing drills, any time a pass went near the line of scrimmage or towards the middle of the field, it seemed like Styles was in perfect position to absolutely blast the receiver.
Footballguys view: As Footballguy Sigmund Bloom noted, Styles is going to be an every-down linebacker who might have untapped potential to rack up sacks as a blitzer. The best case for taking Styles is that a 35-year-old Bobby Wagner was a top 10 fantasy linebacker last year, and Styles at his peak can be better. Bloom advises checking your scoring and lineups. If three off-ball linebackers start (or four with an IDP flex) and it's a tackle-heavy (2 points or more per tackle, 1 point or more per assist) league, Styles could be worth as high as the No. 3 pick.
Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel outlined his plan to reshape the way Justin Herbert plays quarterback: refining Herbert's footwork, timing, and anticipation to unlock the "best football of his career." In McDaniel's first news conference, he said that he planned to make sure that the offense didn't rely too much on "Justin's ability to do above and beyond."
Footballguys view: McDaniel pointed to the success Herbert has had with 2.4 seconds to throw or on extended plays. According to ESPN research, Herbert threw six touchdowns to three interceptions last season on throws released within 2.4 seconds. Once plays extended into the intermediate timing window, between roughly 2.4 and 3.5 seconds, his efficiency dipped. But when plays stretched beyond structure, Herbert again became one of the league's most productive quarterbacks, throwing 10 touchdowns while being sacked an NFL-high 49 times. With a bolstered offensive line and McDaniel on board, optimism is high. Herbert is currently QB8 on the Footballguys Projections.

When trade rumors swirled about Texans wide receiver Nico Collins ahead of the draft, general manager Nick Caserio didn't hesitate to make it clear that the team has no interest in parting ways with the wideout. Caserio said anyone thinking that a trade could happen "can shove it" because the Texans won't be making a deal. That sounds like it was music to Collins' ears because he said this weekend that he does not have any interest in wearing a different uniform. "I love the Texans," Collins said. "I got drafted here . . . It's definitely a place I would like to retire."
Footballguys view: As PFT's Josh Alper notes, while Collins wants to stick around the Texans, the business side of things will always play a role in how a career plays out, and Collins has slipped down the list of best-paid wideouts since signing an extension in 2024. That deal could be revisited, but a failure to find common ground could lead to different thoughts about a shared future in Houston. For now, Collins, who finished as WR8 despite missing two games last season, heads into 2026 as WR9 on the Footballguys 2026 Draft Projections.

Jacoby Brissett has not been taking part in the team's offseason workouts as he looks for an adjustment to his current contract. Coach Mike LaFleur was asked about where things stand regarding conversations that would lead to Brissett joining the team. "Ongoing. Everything's good from a dialogue standpoint," LaFleur said. "Like we said, this is voluntary. So that's where we'll leave it."
Footballguys view: LaFleur was also asked if he felt "behind the 8-ball" because Brissett is missing time in a new offense. "He's played a lot of football," LaFleur said. "We're in communication; he knows what the expectation is." All signs point to a new deal getting done and Brissett, who was QB6 in 12 games as the starter last year, opening the season in that same role. But the Cardinals also went 1-11 in Brissett's starts. Meanwhile, Carson Beck and Gardner Minshew will be getting more work as long as Brissett is away from the team. We'll continue to monitor the situation.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Owen Wright and WR Noah Short were waived Monday, May 11.
Link to storyFree-agent WR Michael Woods II (Browns) agreed to terms with the Denver Broncos Monday, May 11, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Woods was a sixth-round pick by the Browns in 2022. He played 10 games as a rookie, but missed all of 2023 with a torn Achilles. He returned for five games in 2024 and finished his time in Cleveland with 12 catches for 110 yards. Woods spent time on the Packers' practice squad after being cut by the Browns last year. Courtland Sutton, Jaylen Waddle, Marvin Mims, Troy Franklin, Pat Bryant, and Lil'Jordan Humphrey are the other veteran wideouts in Denver.
Minnesota Vikings QB Kyler Murray and QB J.J. McCarthy will have an open competition for the starting quarterback job during offseason workouts and training camp, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Footballguys view: "From everything that I've understood, it is truly wide open," Pelissero said on The Rich Eisen Show. "They're keeping an open mind as a coaching staff." McCarthy struggled in his two seasons since the Vikings chose him 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. Some of his struggles have been self-inflicted (12 interceptions in 10 games), while others have been the result of injuries. Those struggles are why Murray, a two-time Pro Bowler with seven seasons of experience, has been widely viewed as the unanointed starter. Even if we consider Murray the favorite, it's a situation we'll have to monitor.

Pittsburgh Steelers PK Chris Boswell agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension with the Steelers Monday, May 11, worth $28 million.
Footballguys view: Boswell, 35, was scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent after the 2026 season. He was in the final year of a four-year, $20 million deal. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the annual average of his new deal -- $6.22 million -- ranks fourth among league kickers. Brandon Aubrey of the Dallas Cowboys, who signed a four-year, $28 million deal last month, has the highest annual average. Boswell ranks fifth in NFL history in field goal accuracy at 87.7 percent. He is the only kicker with more than 10 career playoff attempts to convert every one, going 19 for 19.

Free-agent OG Layden Robinson (Patriots) signed an undisclosed deal with the Atlanta Falcons Monday, May 11. Robinson had a tryout at rookie minicamp over the weekend.
Link to storyFree-agent RB Ameer Abdullah (Colts) signed an undisclosed deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars Monday, May 11. RB Ja'Quinden Jackson was waived.
Footballguys view: Abdullah, who turns 33 in June, spent last season with the Colts, mainly playing special teams. However, he did have 60 yards rushing with one touchdown, along with 16 catches for 99 yards. He spent the previous three seasons with the Raiders, posting 311 rushing yards with two TDs plus 40 catches for 261 yards with three touchdowns in 2024. Expect far more special teams work than offensive production if he makes this roster.

Free-agent OT Brandon Walton (Panthers) agreed to an undisclosed deal with the Atlanta Falcons Monday, May 11. Walton had a tryout during rookie minicamp over the weekend
Link to storyThe Chargers have agreed to terms with former Browns TE David Njoku, giving him a 1-year deal worth up to $8 million, Njoku's agent told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Footballguys view: Njoku was the 29th overall pick in the 2017 draft. He had played nine years in Cleveland. He made the Pro Bowl in 2023, with a career-high 81 catches for 882 yards and six touchdowns. As Profootballtalk.com suggests, in L.A., Njoku becomes another weapon in the new-look offense being implemented under coordinator Mike McDaniel. The Chargers currently have four other tight ends on the roster, headlined by Oronde Gadsden, who generated 664 receiving yards as a rookie in 2025.

Tennessee Titans QB Cam Ward is learning a second offense in his second NFL season, as offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is now working with the former No. 1 overall pick. Daboll feels Ward has made some early progress, and he has shown to be a quick study. 'He is a young professional,' Daboll said. 'He wants to be great. He is instinctive. When we are just watching the tape, he is able to communicate the things that he sees and why he did certain things when we watch the tape from last year. When we are installing the new system to him, concepts and things like that, he is able to pick things up very quickly.'
Footballguys view: Ward is learning his second offense in two seasons. Getting the system down in the spring will allow Ward to develop faster when the real work begins in training camp. The Titans' goal this offseason has been to buffer Ward as much as possible. The QB flashed big-time play ability down the stretch last year, with exciting splash plays, and showed the ability to lead comebacks. His development is why Daboll was hired. It's why they inked Wan'Dale Robinson and used the No. 4 overall pick on receiver Carnell Tate. Now it's on Ward to put it all to use.
Los Angeles Chargers WR Quentin Johnston has shown a lot of growth, even in the past week, according to new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel. 'You'd be hard pressed to find a guy that's grown more specifically in the last week than Q,' McDaniel said. 'I think he's a guy that has some traits in his game that are similar to some very powerful, explosive, productive receivers that I've had in the past, namely like Julio (Jones) and Andre (Johnson) and so we're pushing him.'
Footballguys view: Johnston has thrived for the Chargers in the last two seasons, totaling 106 receptions for 1,446 yards and 16 touchdowns across the 2024 and 2025 seasons. The Chargers showed their belief in Johnston when the franchise exercised his fifth-year option on April 28. The move will keep Johnston under contract with the Chargers for the next two seasons. Los Angeles will have Johnston, Ladd McConkey, Tre' Harris, KeAndre Lambert-Smith, and Derius Davis returning next season. The Chargers also drafted wide receiver Brenen Thompson in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Indianapolis Colts QBs Riley Leonard and Anthony Richardson are set to battle for the primary backup job to starter QB Daniel Jones, while QB Seth Henigan is also on the roster. Offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said it's 'still early' and 'too soon' to determine a frontrunner for the QB2 job.
Footballguys view: With Daniel Jones coming off a season-ending injury, the next man in line is important for the Colts. Leonard, a 2025 sixth-round pick, started Week 18 last year after the Colts were eliminated from postseason contention. Richardson's history is well documented. The No. 4 overall pick entered the NFL in 2023 with a unique skillset but little college experience. He's started just 15 games in three seasons -- 11 coming in 2024. With Jones still in rehab, Leonard and Richardson will get plenty of reps to prove worthy of the backup gig.

Denver Broncos RB Jonah Coleman might be in line for the No. 3 job behind RBs J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey. He was selected with the team's second pick, and he is tough, and Coleman can catch passes and pass protect, which should endear him to head coach Sean Payton.
Footballguys view: With Dobbins injured and unavailable down the stretch last year, Harvey was inefficient as the primary back. As a result, the Broncos entered the offseason looking to bolster the ground attack. That's precisely why they used their second pick on Coleman. Coleman is a tough, physical running back with three-down capabilities due to his ability to catch passes and pass protect. According to SI.com's Justin Melo, Sean Payton will immediately fall in love with his commitment and rugged approach.
Buffalo Bills WR Skyler Bell was selected 125th in the 2026 NFL Draft, but he could begin the season as the fourth option on the depth chart, with WR Keon Coleman falling out of favor.
Footballguys view: As SI.com suggested, the Bills let quarterback Josh Allen down last season when it came to providing him with passing-game weapons. In an attempt to course-correct, they traded for DJ Moore and drafted Bell. With Keon Coleman on the outs, Bell could be in line for opportunities to impact the offense. The former UConn weapon posted 104 receptions for the Huskies in 2025, fourth-most among eligible FBS wideouts.
