Steelers | McCarthy definitely wants Aaron Rodgers to return for 2026 season    Tue Jan 27, 03:17 PM

They spent more than a decade together in Green Bay. New Steelers coach Mike McCarthy wants that relationship to resume and to continue. During his introductory press conference, McCarthy was asked whether it's his "personal preference," in light of the "best-case scenario," whether he wants quarterback Aaron Rodgers to return for 2026. "I mean, definitely," McCarthy said. "But, you know, I think just like anything, knowing Aaron long enough, going through seasons . . . when guys are up at that stage of their career, they need to step away and decompress. I think that's very important."

Footballguys view: McCarthy was later asked if there was a timeline for both the team and Rodgers to make a decision. "Timelines, we haven't discussed that yet," McCarthy said. They'll need to discuss it fairly soon. Free agency starts in six weeks. If the Steelers will be looking for another veteran quarterback, they'll need to have a plan. As PFT suggests, the first question is whether Rodgers wants to return to a team that doesn't have Mike Tomlin in charge. Rodgers may choose to explore other options before making a decision, with retirement always a real possibility.

Steelers | Mike McCarthy 'excited' about Will Howard    Tue Jan 27, 02:49 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy said he is 'excited' about QB Will Howard.

Footballguys view: While McCarthy was quick to acknowledge he'd like Aaron Rodgers to return for the 2026 season, free agency starts in six weeks. If Rodgers isn't returning, they'll need to have a plan. At least part of that will be Howard. "I think he's someone that I thought he really came on at Ohio State," McCarthy told reporters. "I'm anxious to work with him, so it'd be great to have Aaron back, but Will and Mason [Rudolph], I'm really excited to get started with those guys." Stay tuned.

Jets | Team parting ways with OC Tanner Engstrand    Tue Jan 27, 02:01 PM

New York Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand and the team are parting ways on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Footballguys view: As Profootballtalk.com noted, reports in recent days indicated the Jets were working to hire former Colts and Panthers head coach Frank Reich to join the offensive staff, though not necessarily as offensive coordinator, as Engstrand occupied that role. The situation has now changed. Though Reich was set to join the Jets, New York will now have to be Rooney Rule-compliant if they want to hire Reich as the club's offensive coordinator. It stands to reason that will be the case, as Reich was reportedly set to call plays for New York with Engstrand's title remaining the same.
