Browns | Jerome Ford first RB on field    Sat May 31, 03:25 PM

Cleveland Browns RB Jerome Ford was the first running back on the field during drills Wednesday, May 28.

Footballguys view: Ford is the veteran of the group, but rookie second-round pick Quinshon Judkins should emerge as the lead back for the Browns this year. In early May, Ford reworked his contract and likely has a spot locked up on the 53-man roster. Judkins has plenty of power and speed to his game, but Ford provides a nice change-of-pace option. We'll see how the room shapes up in training camp.

Dolphins | Jaelan Phillips limited Wednesday    Sat May 31, 02:12 PM

Updating a previous report, Miami Dolphins LB Jaelan Phillips (knee) did not participate in team drills during practice Wednesday, May 28.

Footballguys view: Phillips is a talented, but oft-injured player so the team should exercise caution during offseason workouts. A knee injury in the first month of the season ended his 2024 campaign, and he suffered an Achilles' injury late in the 2023 season. The former first-round pick has not played a full season since 2022, and this year is the final year of his rookie contract.

Dolphins | Cam Smith injured Wednesday    Sat May 31, 02:06 PM

Miami Dolphins CB Cam Smith (leg) suffered an apparent leg injury during practice Wednesday, May 28.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Smith has played 21 games in two pro seasons (with zero starts). He's been banged up quite a bit so far in his young pro career, but he's an athletic (and sometimes grabby) corner who doesn't back down from a challenge. The physical talent has always been there with Smith, but he needs to get healthy and stay healthy to further prove himself as a pro player (and possible starter).

Browns | Cleveland rookie QBs locked into backup roles?    Sat May 31, 01:42 PM

Updating previous reports, Cleveland Brown rookie QBs Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel are battling for the reserve pecking order spots, according to The Athletic's Zac Jackson, who added there's 'almost no scenario' in which either would win the starting job in the offseason. As previous reported, QB Joe Flacco is expected to open the season as the starter.

Footballguys view: The Browns quarterback situation is a mess right now...and likely for the whole 2025 season. Joe Flacco is there as the likely starter Week 1, but the former elite veteran is not the player he used to be and has a limited ceiling. Kenny Pickett, a former first-round pick, wants to prove himself now on his third team in three years. Gabriel is small and lacks tools as a passer, and Sanders has the tools but is a late-round pick who won't have many opportunities early on in this competition. Sanders may be the best quarterback on the roster, but there's a chance he doesn't make the 53-man roster...unless the Browns carry four quarterbacks...and -oh yeah- Deshaun Watson.

Giants | Zach Pascal looking strong    Sat May 31, 01:42 PM

New York Giants WR Zach Pascal 'had a strong practice' Friday, May 30, catching a pair of touchdowns from QB Russell Wilson, according to John Schmeelk of Giants.com.

Footballguys view: Pascal has the physical talent to stand out, especially in offseason practices, and he's clearly developing chemistry with Wilson (who is likely the Giants starting QB to open the season). He had back-to-back seasons with 600-plus yards receiving in 2019 and 2020 with the Colts, but has less than 600 yards receiving over the last four seasons combined as he's bounced around to teams like the Eagles and the Cardinals. Pascal is veteran depth for the Giants, and he's likely competing for the no.5 spot on the depth chart.

Texans | C.J. Stroud dealing with injury    Sat May 31, 01:42 PM

Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud (pectoral) has not been throwing recently because of a tight pectoral muscle, but the injury is believed to be minor, according to sources.

Footballguys view: This is not a concern in early June, but let's put a pin in this story and come back to it if the problem persists in training camp. Texans OC Nick Caley said he had "no concerns whatsoever" about Stroud not throwing at voluntary workouts this week. With the utmost trust from Caley and his teammates in 2025, Stroud is perhaps set for a breakout season.

Rams | Jarquez Hunter under contract    Sat May 31, 01:42 PM

Los Angeles Rams fourth-round draft choice RB Jarquez Hunter signed a four-year contract with the Rams Friday, May 30. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Watching draft coverage behind the scenes with the Rams, it was clear that HC Sean McVay LOVES Hunter. It could be something...and it could be nothing. Hunter has to show off his skill in training camp and the preseason to earn the backup job behind Kyren Williams in 2025 (Blake Corum is his main competition for that spot). However, he's got a similar skill set to Williams and could be seen as an eventual starter.

Ravens | Bobby Vega receives promotion    Sat May 31, 09:52 AM

The Baltimore Ravens promoted national scout Bobby Vega to senior personnel executive Friday, May 30.

Footballguys view: Ravens GM Eric DeCosta announced eight promotions and one new hire within the football operations department Friday, including several in scouting. The Ravens are among the best of the best in terms of front office talent. With a proven eye for talent, Vega is on track to one day be a general manager in this league.

Vikings | MIN promotes two to assistant GM roles    Sat May 31, 09:35 AM

The Minnesota Vikings promoted Ryan Grigson and Demitrius Washington to assistant general manager roles Friday, May 30, according to multiple sources.

Footballguys view: Grigson was getting some interest as a potential GM candidate for the Jets earlier this year. He was previously a GM for the Colts (2012-2016), where he oversaw three 11-win seasons in his five-year tenure. If things continue to go well in Minnesota, some franchise may want Grigson to run their team.

Packers | Mark Murphy to retire    Sat May 31, 09:16 AM

Green Bay Packers team president/CEO Mark Murphy will officially retire July 25, the day of the Packers' annual shareholders' meeting at Lambeau Field, since he will have reached the organization's mandatory retirement age of 70 by then. Team leadership will then transfer to chief operating officer Ed Policy, who was chosen as Murphy's replacement in June 2024.

Footballguys view: The mandatory retirement age of 70 for Murphy is on his birthday of July 13th. He has served as CEO and president of the Packers since Jan. 28, 2008. In that time, the Packers have consistently been one of the best teams in the NFL. They are a well-run organization, and that starts at the top with guys like Murphy. "I look forward to Ed taking over leadership of the Packers. He's been a tremendous asset to the organization and I'm confident he will be an excellent steward in the role," Murphy said in a press release.

NFL | Von Miller plans on playing in 2025    Fri May 30, 03:35 PM

Free-agent DE Von Miller (Bills) told 9News' Mike Klis that he is 'definitely' playing in 2025.

Footballguys view: Miller is not the same player he used to be, but some team might want him later in the year to provide veteran pass-rushing help. Even though some Broncos fans want him to return, Miller himself even admitted recently that there's no room for a player like him in Denver anymore. Miller will have to continue playing the waiting game.

Lions | Detroit continues to talk up Jameson Williams    Fri May 30, 01:41 PM

Detroit Lions WR Jameson Williams has 'gotten so much stronger' this offseason, according to head coach Dan Campbell. Per Campbell, the 'sky's the limit for him' and they 'expect him to have a huge season.'

Footballguys view: Williams finally played up to his potential last year, posting career-highs in receptions (58), receiving yards (1,001), and receiving touchdowns (7). New OC John Morton is predicting a breakout season, but Fantasy GMs still see Williams as an inconsistent WR3/flex option with upside.

Giants | Jaxson Dart inks his rookie deal    Fri May 30, 01:23 PM

New York Giants first-round draft choice Jaxson Dart (Ole Miss) signed his four-year rookie contract worth $17 million on Friday, May 30.

Footballguys view: The Giants moved back into the first round to select Dart. The rookie is seen as the quarterback of the future, but he might not see the field in 2025. The Giants have Russell Wilson in line to be their starter in Week 1. If/when things fall apart with Wilson, the team could turn the reins over to Dart. He's got a strong arm and the athleticism to keep plays alive with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield.

Steelers | Trey Palmer on Pittsburgh's radar    Fri May 30, 01:05 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Trey Palmer is reportedly a player that the Pittsburgh Steelers are interested in trading for, according to Zachary Smith of Steelers Now.

Footballguys view: The Steelers are interested in adding talent to the roster at the wide receiver position, especially after trading away George Pickens to the Cowboys. Earlier reports indicated the Steelers did check in on the availability of Chris Olave (Saints) as well. Palmer has speed to his game and would bring that to the field for the Steelers if added.

Falcons | Teams calling about Kyle Pitts    Fri May 30, 11:54 AM

Atlanta Falcons TE Kyle Pitts has been the subject of trade calls the team has received, according to sources. The team would prefer to keep him, and it would take at least a Day 2 pick to spark Atlanta's interest.

Footballguys view: Let's keep an eye on this situation although nothing seems imminent. Pitts has not played up to his potential since his rookie season. Injuries and inconsistencies have plagued his game, but the physical freakish attributes are still there. Pitts is in the final year of his rookie contract, so any team trading for him would have to get him a new deal now or after this season.

49ers | Jordan Watkins making an impact    Fri May 30, 11:54 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR Jordan Watkins looked 'fast and fluid' and was one of the few rookies to have a prominent role during OTAs Thursday, May 29, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: Watkins has plenty of speed and moves in the open field, so it's no surprising he's turning heads at OTAs. We'll see what he can do as training camp gets here. Watkins is down the depth chart (fifth or sixth) but has added value as a return man option as well.

49ers | Jauan Jennings not missing a beat    Fri May 30, 11:54 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR Jauan Jennings was the favorite target of QB Brock Purdy during OTAs Thursday, May 29, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: Let's keep an eye on this as the offseason rolls on. The 49ers are dealing with banged up wide receivers missing time in Brandon Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall. Depending on when Pearsall is ready, Jennings could be in line to be the team's no.1 receiver to begin the season. We like him as a WR3/flex option from a fantasy perspective.

49ers | Brandon Aiyuk not on the field    Fri May 30, 11:54 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk (knee) did not participate in drills during OTAs Thursday, May 29.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL and MCL last season and likely won't even be ready at the start of the season as he continues to rehab. Reports earlier this year indicated Aiyuk could be ready around the middle of the regular season.

49ers | Christian McCaffrey looking sharp    Fri May 30, 11:54 AM

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (Achilles, knee) 'looked electric' during OTAs Thursday, May 29, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that McCaffrey is as "healthy as can be" and that the team must "protect him from himself." Everyone knows McCaffrey is an elite playmaker when healthy, but it's been the staying healthy part that has been a problem in recent years. McCaffrey has injury risk, but is seen as a low-end RB1 for Fantasy GMs in 2025. Isaac Guerendo could get more work to keep McCaffrey fresh as the year goes on.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce rejuvenated    Fri May 30, 11:14 AM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce looks like he feels better than he did at the start of last season, according to QB Patrick Mahomes. 'He's in here,' Mahomes said. 'He's working. I know his body feels good. I think he feels better than even last year before going into last season. I think he's motivated to go out there and have an even better year than he had this last.''If it's the last ride, you would never know,' Mahomes said. 'The way he's talking about football. The way he's talking about working and trying to be even better this year than he was last year. He doesn't seem like a guy like it's his last ride, like he's tired of the job.'

Footballguys view: Kelce didn't look like himself in 2024, and we wonder how much he has left in the tank. Even as an older player, Kelce still has plenty of fantasy value. With the quality of the Chiefs offense and the volume of targets he should still be in line for, Kelce could catch around 80-85 passes and finish as a top-10 fantasy tight end.

Vikings | Kwesi Adofo-Mensah extended    Fri May 30, 11:00 AM

Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah to a multiyear extension Friday, May 30. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Earlier this year, the Vikings locked up HC Kevin O'Connell with a five-year contract. O'Connell and Adofo-Mensah came to the Vikings together back in 2022, and they're keeping this duo for the foreseeable future. Adofo-Mensah's drafts leave something to be desired, but he's worked hard to find free agent gems for the team over the last few years. Ryan Grigson and Demitrius Washington were given the new titles of assistant general manager.

Texans | Christian Kirk drawing rave reviews    Fri May 30, 12:48 AM

Houston Texans WR Christian Kirk 'has been everything we could ask for (so far this offseason),' according to head coach DeMeco Ryans. Teammate Nico Collins referred to Kirk as a 'slot magician.''You talk about a guy who is dedicated to getting better. He has honed in on his craft and he's leading our young guys. He's a hard worker, he shows up every day with the right attitude working hard and showing guys how it's done,' Ryans said.

Footballguys view: The last time Kirk played a full season (2022), he finished with over 1,100 yards receiving and eight touchdowns. Injuries shortened his last two seasons with the Jaguars, and now Kirk is impressing with the Texans. We're not projecting him over 1,000 with this new team, but if Kirk plays a full season as a 'slot magician' we could see him catching around 60 passes for around 800 yards and 4-5 touchdowns. That's worth a consideration as a deep flex option for Fantasy GMs out there.

Bengals | Cincinnati impressed with Jordan Moore    Fri May 30, 12:16 AM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Jordan Moore - an undrafted free-agent out of Duke - will be a player to keep an eye on in the preseason, according to Dan Hoard of Bengals.com.'He's an A+ young man, fits our culture, and wants to be great. He's coachable, and I'm excited to have him as one of our guys,' wide receivers coach Troy Walters said recently

Footballguys view: Moore was extremely productive in college at Duke. For his Blue Devils career, Moore played in 49 games and had 35 starts, catching 177 passes for 2,352 yards and 21 touchdowns. He's an explosive player off the line of scrimmage, and Moore can change direction quickly without losing much speed. He's buried on the depth chart with the Bengals, so with impressive performances in training camp and the preseason Moore is angling for a developmental spot on the practice squad.
