Jets | Geno Smith on field Monday Mon Aug 17, 04:44 PM
New York Jets QB Geno Smith (ankle) participated in practice Monday, Aug. 17, but appeared to be favoring his ankle during drills.
Footballguys view: According to ESPN.com's Rich Cimini, Smith powered through the relatively light practice, though he did have one hiccup -- an overthrow that S Andre Cisco picked off in a two-minute drill. Coach Aaron Glenn acknowledged that Smith still is feeling the residual effects of the injury, adding, "I want to see exactly how he feels coming out of this practice to see how we're going to continue to move forward." We'll continue to watch for more.

Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers is making more strides in his return from the torn ACL that ended his 2025 season. Nabers took part in full-speed team drills for the first time at training camp on Monday.
Footballguys view: According to PFT's Josh Alper, Nabers wore a red non-contact jersey and had his reps managed in both 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 periods of the practice. Still, it was one more step toward being in the lineup without any restrictions when the Giants face the Cowboys in the first week of the regular season. Nabers didn't make any guarantees about playing in the opener, but obstacles to him doing so are getting harder to find, and it's starting to feel like a pretty safe bet that No. 1 will be on the field in Week 1.

Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles said Monday that wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, the Bucs' first-round draft pick in 2025, is "day-to-day, week-to-week" with a toe sprain suffered during joint practices at the New York Jets last week.
Footballguys view: Bowles added that he's "not sure at this time" if the situation will impact Egbuka's availability for Week 1. With Mike Evans now on the San Francisco 49ers, Egbuka, who is lining up primarily as a Z receiver, is expected to get a large number of targets in 2026. We'll continue to watch this one closely.
Las Vegas Raiders C Jackson Powers-Johnson (undisclosed) left practice early Monday, Aug. 17, after suffering an apparent injury.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers OT Tristan Wirfs (hamstring) participated in practice Monday, Aug. 17.
Footballguys view: Getting their All-Pro left tackle on the field is a huge positive. Wirfs has been sitting out since suffering a hamstring strain in the team's conditioning test at the beginning of camp. "We're starting to ramp him up a little bit, see how much he can go through this week, kind of go from there," Bowles said. Having Wirfs, one of the best players at his position in the league, will be important. Expect a cautious approach.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Jalen McMillan (knee) is considered day-to-day or week-to-week because of a knee injury, according to head coach Todd Bowles.
Footballguys view: Expectations were high for McMillan, who suffered a serious neck injury last preseason that limited him to just four games during the 2025 season. He returned to action in Week 14. Two games later, he recorded the first 100-yard game of his career. He finished the final two weeks of the season with 12 receptions for 178 yards. During his rookie season in 2024, he totaled 37 receptions for 461 yards and eight touchdowns in 13 games. We'll continue to follow up as developments warrant.

Los Angeles Rams OT Keagen Trost (hamstring) is expected to miss a few weeks because of a hamstring injury, according to head coach Sean McVay.
Link to storyUpdating a previous report, Minnesota Vikings LB Jamal Adams (quadriceps) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list because of a torn quadriceps, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell.
Footballguys view: Adams had received heavy first-team reps during practice in the Vikings' three-safety packages. He was playing with the second-team defense Saturday when the injury occurred. Injuries have plagued Adams for much of the second half of his career. He played only one game in 2022, nine in 2023, and five in 2024 before making it through all 17 games with the Raiders as a part-time player last season.

Miami Dolphins WR Chris Bell (knee) was activated from the Active/Non-Football Injury list Monday, Aug. 17.
Footballguys view: Bell, wearing a red non-contact jersey, practiced for the first time on Monday. He participated in stretching and individual drills, but he sat out of 11-on-11 work. Bell tore his ACL in December. His return to full health could potentially give Miami an exciting pair of young wide receivers. Fellow rookie Caleb Douglas has been one of the standout players at training camp and started the Dolphins' preseason opener against the Commanders. We'll continue to monitor Bell's progress.

Los Angeles Rams DE Myles Garrett (knee) is not participating in practice Monday, Aug. 17.
Footballguys view: Coach Sean McVay said Monday that Garrett may not participate in practice this week, but he should return next week. The Rams will continue to take a cautious approach with their biggest offseason prize to ensure he's as healthy as possible for a Week 1 matchup with the 49ers in Melbourne, Australia, on Thursday, Sept. 10.

Los Angeles Rams WR Puka Nacua (groin) is not participating in practice Monday, Aug. 17.
Footballguys view: Nacua is dealing with a core muscle injury suffered during last week's joint practice with the Cowboys. The Rams will host the Saints for a preseason matchup on Saturday afternoon. Nacua was not expected to play even without being injured, as Los Angeles has not traditionally played starters in the preseason under head coach Sean McVay, who told reporters that Nacua should return to practice next week. We'll continue to watch this one closely.

San Francisco 49ers RB Khalil Herbert was released Monday, Aug. 17.
Footballguys view: It's reasonable to believe Herbert's release means the 49ers are satisfied with their health and depth at running back, where the group is talented but dealing with multiple injuries. Christian McCaffrey, who's missed a week due to tightness, Jordan James (ribs), Kaelon Black (adductor), and Isaac Guerendo have all been missing time.

Tennessee Titans QB Mitchell Trubisky (biceps) is being evaluated for biceps injury, according to head coach Robert Saleh.
Footballguys view: Reporters at the workout said that Trubisky grabbed his right arm after throwing a pass. Trubisky is currently the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart behind Cam Ward. The veteran signed with the Titans as a free agent this offseason. Will Levis is the third quarterback on the roster and would be in line for more playing time if Trubisky is sidelined for a stretch.

Free-agent WR Beaux Collins (Giants) agreed to terms with the Atlanta Falcons Monday, Aug. 17, according to sources. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Collins, 23, signed with the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2025. He played nine games as a rookie last season, catching two passes for 25 yards. Collins saw action on 84 offensive snaps and 109 on special teams before going on injured reserve, where he finished the season.

Philadelphia Eagles WR DeVonta Smith (hamstring) participated in practice Monday, Aug. 17.
Footballguys view: Smith missed the last couple of weeks with his hamstring injury, so his return is obviously good news. The Eagles' pre-practice injury report said that Smith will be a limited participant. Smith's return means that the Eagles are now only waiting for Makai Lemon to fill out their receiver group. Lemon is also dealing with a hamstring injury and has been out since early August.

New York Jets CB Mory Bamba (knee) will be sidelined for a few weeks because of a knee injury, according to head coach Aaron Glenn.

New York Jets WR Garrett Wilson (illness) did not participate in practice Monday, Aug. 17, because of an illness.
Footballguys view: Jets coach Aaron Glenn said the issue was a stomach bug. As CBSSports.com suggested, assuming Wilson is able to move past the illness and regain strength within the next few days, his preparation for the start of the regular season shouldn't be dramatically affected. Wilson, who's being drafted as WR20 with a fourth-round price, suited up for the Jets' preseason opener Friday against the Buccaneers and displayed a strong early connection with new starting quarterback Geno Smith, recording two catches for 32 yards on three targets in limited snaps.
Free-agent QB Jake Haener (Chiefs) agreed to terms with the New York Giants Monday, Aug. 17, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Free-agent RB Najee Harris (Chargers) is meeting with the New York Giants Monday, Aug. 17.
Footballguys view: Harris, 28, suffered a torn Achilles tendon while playing for the Chargers under Jim Harbaugh in 2025. The former first-round pick was able to play just three games before his injury. As Profootballtalk.com reminded readers, John Harbaugh also knows what it's like to go against Harris well, with the running back playing the Ravens twice a year from 2021-2024 while with the Steelers. The Giants already have Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr., and Devin Singletary at the top of their current depth chart. We'll see how Harris fits if he signs.

Free-agent LB Von Miller (Commanders) signed a one-year contract with the Dallas Cowboys Monday, Aug. 17, worth $5.5 million, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The deal can be worth as much as $7.5 million with incentives.
Footballguys view: As previously noted, Miller will join a pass-rush rotation that features Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku, first-round pick Malachi Lawrence, and potentially Sam Williams, James Houston, and Marist Liufau. Even if he's no longer able to handle an every-down role, the Cowboys believe Miller can be a difference-maker in spot duty.

Kansas City Chiefs CB Mansoor Delane (shoulder) is participating in practice for the first time without a non-contact jersey Monday, Aug. 17.
Footballguys view: The Chiefs have high expectations for the first-round rookie, but Delane has been slowed during training camp by a lingering shoulder blade injury he suffered late in OTAs. He was inactive for the preseason opener this past weekend. But now, the No. 6 overall pick appears to be trending in the right direction.

New York Jets RB Breece Hall (groin) suffered a groin strain Monday, Aug. 17, according to head coach Aaron Glenn. Hall will be evaluated, but Glenn didn't think it was a major deal.
Footballguys view: Glenn added that Hall will undergo imaging tests to ensure the Jets have the right answers about his injury. "We will try to be precautionary with a lot of those," Allen said, "to make sure that we do the right things." Hall played in New York's first preseason game against Tampa Bay, registering four carries for 16 yards. One of the Jets' best offensive players, Hall rushed for 1,065 yards with four touchdowns and had 36 catches for 350 yards with one TD in 2205. A healthy Hall, going at RB14, could exceed expectations this year.

49ers running back Christian McCaffrey first missed practice on Monday, with his absence generally (and vaguely) attributed to "tightness." Nearly a week later, he's still not practicing. Via Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group, McCaffrey wasn't practicing again on Sunday.
Footballguys view: For now, the 49ers may simply be protecting McCaffrey from himself. In 2025, McCaffrey led the league with 413 regular-season touches in 17 games. At 30, McCaffrey is already pushing the age envelope for tailbacks. He has had 2,284 regular-season touches in nine NFL seasons. We'll continue to monitor this situation. As Profootballtalk.com suggested, at some point, it will be fair to wonder whether it's something more than proactive maintenance -- especially since a similar scenario played out in 2024, when Achilles issues ultimately cost McCaffrey 13 games.

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (Achilles), on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, feels positive about his on-field rehab. 'I'm hitting numbers I need to hit. I'm pretty close,' Kittle said.
Footballguys view: Kittle would miss at least the first four games if he isn't activated back to the active roster on Aug. 30. The veteran tight end tore his right Achilles in a Jan. 11 playoff game against the Eagles. He underwent surgery three days later. Kittle, who continues to target the season opener for his return, said the next two weeks will "let me know if I'm ready to play Week 1 or not." Kittle added that he will have to practice in pads before the season opener to play against the Rams.

Washington Commanders QB Marcus Mariota (knee) is expected to be ready for the regular-season opener.
Footballguys view: Mariota, in his third season with Washington, has been a valuable backup to Jayden Daniels. Mariota played in 11 games, including eight starts, last season, throwing for 1,695 yards, 10 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He replaced an injured Daniels in two games in 2024, leading victories in both games -- including a game-winning pass at Dallas in the regular-season finale with two seconds remaining. So having him back at full health to open the season will be important.

Houston Texans WR Jaylin Noel (hamstring, finger) will miss a few weeks after suffering a setback, according to wide receivers coach Ben McDaniels.
Footballguys view: Noel, sidelined by a minor finger issue, was activated from the NFI list and was working off to the side in wide receiver drills to get back on the field. But Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 reports that Noel is now dealing with a hamstring injury in addition to the finger injury. It's a tough break for the Texans' second-year wideout, who, while he's expected to see a big bump in opportunities in 2026, can't seem to get on the field in training camp. We'll follow up as developments warrant.
Jaylin Noel player page
Free-agent LB Von Miller (Commanders) is expected to sign with the Dallas Cowboys, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Miller enters his 15th season with more sacks (138.5) than any other active player. He recorded nine sacks last season for the Commanders -- his highest total since 2021, when he finished with 9.5 while splitting time with the Broncos and Rams. In Dallas, Miller will be asked to be part of a pass-rush rotation that features Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku, first-round pick Malachi Lawrence, and potentially Sam Williams, James Houston, and Marist Liufau. Miller might not be the every-down player he was with the Broncos, but the Cowboys believe he can be a difference-maker for new coordinator Christian Parker.

Minnesota Vikings LB Jamal Adams (knee) was diagnosed with a season-ending knee injury, according to sources.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that the Cardinals plan on giving Jeremiyah Love the week off after he suffered an ankle injury in the preseason opener. Fowler added that the team is "hopeful" he'll be ready for Week 1. Some have speculated that he suffered a high ankle sprain, but head coach Mike LaFleur refused to give more specific information about the injury.
Footballguys view: We weren't worried about Love's status for Week 1 until now. Adam Schefter has reported that the injury is a high ankle sprain. Love is still such a high upside play in the third round that it shouldn't discourage you from taking him, but Tyler Allgeier is becoming more interesting as a bench stash while we bide our time waiting for Love to return to the field.
Adam Hoge reports that Bears RB Kyle Monangai suffered "what appeared to be a right knee injury" when he was tackled from behind. The team wasn't wearing pads, and Grady Jarrett, who tackled Monangai, tried to hold him and apparently visibly felt bad about the injury. Monangai and a trainer tested the injury and walked off of the practice field together. Monangai was reportedly walking gingerly, but did not need the cart.
Footballguys view: The Bears backs behind D'Andre Swift include Roschon Johnson, Brittain Brown, Salvon Ahmed, and Coleman Bennett. If this is serious, they could sign someone like Najee Harris. Early reports are that his knee is structurally sound and he is believed to be "fine" per Adam Schefter, but the team will have an MRI done to confirm.
