Bills | With Prater ailing, Bills add PK Matthew Wright to practice squad Tue Jan 6, 04:56 PM
The Bills have signed K Matthew Wright to their practice squad.
Footballguys view: The team's regular PK, Matt Prater, is considered day-to-day because of his quadriceps injury, according to head coach Sean McDermott. McDermott said the team planned to try out kickers this week. Wright gets the nod. Wright is on his fourth team this season, having also kicked for the Titans, Commanders, and Texans. He's 5-for-5 on field goals and 4-for-4 on extra points this year.

Carolina Panthers DL Bobby Brown III (concussion) and CB Robert Rochell (concussion) were limited in practice on Tuesday, Jan. 6. LB Claudin Cherelus (calf, ankle), G Robert Hunt (biceps), DL Tershawn Wharton (hamstring), and G Chandler Zavala (calf) practiced in full on Tuesday.

Green Bay Packers QB Clayton Tune was waived on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Footballguys view: The Packers also signed quarterback Desmond Ridder to the active roster from the practice squad. Ridder will be the third quarterback for the playoffs, behind starter Jordan Love and backup Malik Willis.

Former Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski will interview for the New York Giants head coaching vacancy on Wednesday, Jan. 7.
Footballguys view: As SI.com noted, this isn't the first time Stefanski is on the Giants' radar. Back in 2018, when he was the Vikings' offensive coordinator, then-Giants head coach Pat Shurmur was interested in adding Stefanski to his staff, but the Vikings denied the Giants' request to speak with him. Stefanski instead landed in Cleveland, where he won NFL Coach of the Year honors in 2020 and 2023. Stefanski, who holds a 45-56 regular-season record and is 1-2 in the postseason, is widely regarded as the early favorite to land the Giants' job, given his work with quarterbacks and offenses in general.
San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh has been requested to interview with the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Footballguys view: Saleh returned to the 49ers after spending three-plus seasons as the head coach of the Jets. Saleh was 20-36 during his time with the AFC East club. In addition to Saleh, the Cardinals have requested interviews with Denver DC Vance Joseph and Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver.
Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver has been requested by the Arizona Cardinals to interview for their head coaching vacancy.
Footballguys view: The Cardinals are expected to interview Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph for their head coaching vacancy this week, and two more candidates from that side of the ball are also on their list of candidates. Albert Breer of SI.com reports that the Cardinals have requested permission to interview 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh in addition to Weaver, whose name has also come up as part of the Falcons' head coaching search. He has been on Mike McDaniel's staff for the last two seasons and has also worked for the Ravens, Texans, Browns, Bills, and Jets.

Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken has been requested to interview for the Cleveland Browns' head coaching vacancy.
Footballguys view: Monken, 59, has been with the Ravens for the last three seasons. But he was also the Browns' OC under former head coach Freddie Kitchens in 2019. Kitchens called plays for Cleveland that season. The Ravens have finished No. 6, No. 1, and No. 16 in yards and No. 4, No. 3, and No. 11 in points in the team's last three seasons under Monken.
Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo was requested by the New York Giants to interview for their head coach vacancy on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Footballguys view: Anarumo has been linked to the Giants' head coach opening since they fired Brian Daboll in November. At the time, the Colts were a hot team with a defense that was leading the charge toward a playoff berth. But the Colts missed the playoffs, and Anarumo is available. According to AtoZ Sports, a prime reason Anarumo was brought into the coaching search is his connection to New York. He's from Staten Island and attended Wagner College, where he began his coaching career in 1989. He also spent a year with the Giants in 2018 on Pat Shurmur's staff.
Green Bay Packers QB Malik Willis (shoulder, hamstring) is expected to be healthy enough to backup Jordan Love, according to head coach Matt LaFleur.
Footballguys view: Willis dealt with a right shoulder injury in the final weeks of the season and was inactive for their Week 18 loss to the Vikings. He offers considerable upside if something happens to Love. Remember, Willis will be a free agent after the season, and he likely showed enough working in relief of Love this season to draw heavy interest on the open market.
Chicago Bears CB Kyler Gordon (groin) and OT Braxton Jones (knee) had their practice windows opened up to return from injured reserve on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Link to storyDenver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph is expected to interview with the Las Vegas Raiders, Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants, and Tennessee Titans for their head coach openings this week.
Footballguys view: Joseph has previous head coaching experience -- he was 11-21 with the Broncos in 2017 and 2018 -- and prior experience with the Cardinals. Joseph ran Arizona's defense under Kliff Kingsbury from 2019-2022 and returned to Denver after Kingsbury was fired following the 2022 season. All interviews at this point will be held virtually. If a team wants a second, in-person interview with Joseph, they will have to wait until the Broncos are eliminated or until the break between the conference title games and the Super Bowl.
Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins agreed to a contract revision Tuesday, Jan. 6, on the final two years of his contract. As part of the restructure, there is now a guarantee in the amount of $67.9 million for the 2027 season that vests March 13. The restructure also included reducing his 2026 base salary from a non-guaranteed $35 million to just $2.1 million, a difference of $32.9 million. That amount equals the increase in his 2027 compensation that this amended deal includes, just split differently.
Footballguys view: While Cousins and the Falcons -- who are searching for a new general manager and head coach -- could agree to another amended deal to keep him with Atlanta, one logical possibility posited by salary cap experts is the team moving on from Cousins before March 13 via a post-June 1 release. He appeared in 10 games this season, starting the final seven. Cousins, who threw 10 touchdown passes and five interceptions in seven starts, said after the Week 18 win over the Saints that he would like to keep playing and kept the door open to return to Atlanta.

Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury mutually parted ways with the team Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Footballguys view: Kingsbury met with head coach Dan Quinn on Tuesday to discuss the future of the offense, and after their conversation, they mutually agreed to part ways. The move isn't a total surprise. As the Commanders spiraled in 2025, it became a real possibility that they could move on without him. According to The Athletic, a difference in philosophy between Kingsbury and general manager Adam Peters in the development of quarterback Jayden Daniels, who missed 10 games this season because of injuries, was an issue. Whatever the case, Washington will have a new playcaller for Daniels to adjust to this offseason.

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy will interview for the Tennessee Titans head coaching position Thursday, Jan. 8.
Footballguys view: The Titans have also scheduled interviews with Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, former Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski, and former Falcons head coach Raheem Morris. Nagy worked with Titans General Manager Mike Borgonzi when Borgonzi was in the Chiefs' organization, and he had a four-year run as the Bears' head coach in between stints as the coordinator in Kansas City. This week's interview with Nagy will be held virtually, and a second, in-person interview could take place later in the month.
Chicago Bears assistant general manager Ian Cunningham has been requested for an interview for the Atlanta Falcons' general manager vacancy.
Link to storyCarolina Panthers WR David Moore (elbow) was activated from the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Jan. 6. WR Hunter Renfrow was waived.
Footballguys view: Moore's 21-day window to practice was ending Tuesday, so he had to be activated today, or he'd have remained on IR. He's been out since an elbow injury in Week 4, but he's been a valuable late-season and postseason contributor for head coach Dave Canales on three teams now.

Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus was fired Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Footballguys view: The 55-year-old Eberflus held the role for just one year. But over those 17 games, the Cowboys defense gave up 511 points, the first time in 65 years of existence that the franchise had allowed 30 points per game over the course of a season. Under Eberflus, Dallas also gave up 377 yards per contest (3rd-worst in the league), permitted opponents to convert third downs at the highest clip in the NFL, and was ranked 29th out of 32 teams in red zone defense. The Cowboys will now have their fourth defensive coordinator in as many years.
Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray is not expected to return to the Cardinals next season, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, who said that he believes the team is 'planning to move on' from Murray, regardless of who is hired as the next head coach.
Footballguys view: This comes a day after GM Monti Ossenfort told reporters that Murray remains under contract and said that all options are on the table for what the team will do at the position in the future. But Schefter's belief adds to an already large body of speculation suggesting that Murray has played his last snap in Arizona. There are a lot of moving pieces here. Moving on from Murray would require the Cardinals to have a fallback plan that works for whoever the next coach will be. While there's contractual urgency to get this done, it's unlikely to be immediate.

Pittsburgh Steelers WR DK Metcalf was removed from the Reserve/Suspended by Commissioner list on Monday, Jan. 5. Metcalf served a two-game suspension for an altercation with a fan.
Footballguys view: Acquired in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks last March, Metcalf had a solid debut season with Pittsburgh, catching 59 passes for 850 yards and recording seven total touchdowns in 15 games. Luckily, the Steelers were able to pull off a Week 18 win over the Baltimore Ravens, earning a spot in the playoffs and opening the door for Metcalf's return next Monday, as the Texans travel to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers.

Jayden Daniels played all 17 games as a rookie in 2024, winning 12 regular-season games and leading the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game. He played only seven games in 2025, finishing only four of those, and the Commanders won only five games. He will spend the offseason working out and determining what can keep him healthy in 2026. "That's the focus for me in this offseason -- just rebuilding myself from the ground up," Daniels said Monday, via Miles Jordan of USA Today. "That's the most important thing -- to be available for my team."
Footballguys view: Daniels had knee, hamstring, and elbow injuries this past season. Daniels said he feels like he let down the Commanders in 2025. Marcus Mariota started eight games and Josh Johnson two in subbing for Daniels this season. "I think I can always grow and mature," Daniels said. "The best ability for myself is availability. If I am not out there, I am kind of hurting the team, and my number one job is to protect the team.

Indianapolis Colts impending free-agent QB Daniel Jones is a player head coach Shane Steichen hopes returns to the team next season, and Steichen said he believes Jones wants to re-sign with the team.
Footballguys view: The obvious potential complication here is the torn Achilles' Jones sustained on Dec. 7, which ended his season. But Jones on Monday -- less than a month out from the injury and ensuing surgery -- expressed optimism in his recovery timeline. Jones finished his season having completed 68 percent of his passes for 3,101 yards with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions as Jones and Steichen forged the sort of quarterback-playcaller mind-meld that teams across the NFL constantly seek but don't always find. We'll be watching this situation closely in coming weeks.

Cleveland Browns QB Shedeur Sanders made solid improvements this season but is still a work in progress, according to general manager Andrew Berry. Berry said he is not sure if the starting quarterback for next season is currently on the roster.
Footballguys view: Sanders completed 56.6 percent of his passes for 1,400 yards with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions in his eight appearances with seven starts. He put together his first fourth-quarter comeback and game-winning drive with Sunday's 20-18 victory over the Bengals. With a new coach coming, it remains to be seen how Sanders will be viewed as he competes with Dillon Gabriel, Deshaun Watson, and any newcomer who's brought into the mix.
Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson is expected to be on the 2026 roster at this point, but general manager Andrew Berry said the team will not need to make a final decision for a while.
Footballguys view: If Watson winds up being a part of the team in 2026, it will be interesting to see how Cleveland's new coach handles a potential competition between Watson, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, and any other quarterback the club acquires over the course of the offseason.

Cincinnati Bengals impending free-agent QB Joe Flacco said he is not considering retirement and hopes to play again next season.
Footballguys view: James Rapien of BengalsTalk.com reports that Flacco is open to returning to the Bengals, as long as the circumstances are right. He might want a chance to compete for a starting job with a team like the Dolphins, Cardinals, or Jets. Flacco went 1-5 for the Bengals, but he had 1,664 passing yards with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions. The Bengals being able to bring him back on a one-year deal to back up Joe Burrow would be the best-case scenario. Availability hasn't been Burrow's strength. Having Flacco ready to start a few weeks would be ideal for the Bengals.

Buffalo Bills PK Matt Prater (quadriceps) is considered day-to-day because of his quadriceps injury, according to head coach Sean McDermott. McDermott said the team plans to try out kickers this week.
Footballguys view: McDermott said that the team will be working out kickers in order to have a backup plan in the event Prater is not able to play. The Bills released Michael Badgley last week when Prater was deemed healthy enough to return. McDermott did not say whether he's under consideration for a return.

Link to storyFired as head coach of the Browns on Monday, Kevin Stefanski may not wait long to find his next job. Stefanski is expected to speak with the Giants, Falcons, and Titans about their head coaching vacancies, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Footballguys view: As PFT noted, reporters on the Giants beat have been naming Stefanski as a potential top candidate for New York for weeks. Now Stefanski is officially available and can speak with the Giants about their opening. A two-time AP coach of the year, Stefanski, 43, compiled a 45-56 record in six seasons with the Browns. The club went to the postseason twice, winning one playoff game in Stefanski's tenure. Before becoming Cleveland's head coach, Stefanski was with Minnesota from 2006-2019, serving in various assistant roles until he was promoted to offensive coordinator during the 2018 season.
Free-agent WR Hal Presley (Titans), WR Xavier Restrepo (Titans), RB Blake Watson and TE Joel Wilson (Titans) signed Reserve/Future contracts with the Tennessee Titans Monday, Jan. 5. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Link to storyCardinals owner Michael Bidwill confirmed that General Manager Monti Ossenfort will be leading the search for the team's next head coach during a Monday press conference, and Ossenfort weighed in on another major offseason decision later in the session. Quarterback Kyler Murray missed the final 12 games of the season with a foot injury, and there was plenty of speculation during the season that he had played his final game as a Cardinal. During Monday's press conference, Ossenfort noted that Murray remains under contract and said that all options are on the table for what the team will do at the position in the future.
Footballguys view: As Profootballtalk.com suggested, the identity of the next head coach will obviously have a bearing on what direction the Cardinals choose to go. Murray's contract guarantees him over $39 million in 2026, and keeping him on the roster through the fifth day of the new league year will add another $19.5 million in guarantees for 2027. Moving on from Murray would also require the Cardinals to find another starter (or stick with Jacoby Brissett, who replaced Murray), so choosing the next coach is only the start of a busy offseason for Ossenfort and the Cardinals.

Link to storySan Francisco 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall (knee) recently aggravated the posterior cruciate ligament injury in his knee and will be reevaluated later in the week, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Footballguys view: Pearsall's situation has remained tenuous since he returned from a right knee injury in Week 11. He reinjured his ankle and knee in Week 15 against Tennessee, missed the following week against Indianapolis, and then returned last week against Chicago. Saturday was Pearsall's eighth missed game. For the season, he had 36 receptions for 528 yards. He had four catches for 108 yards in the Week 1 meeting with Seattle. Kendrick Bourne and Demarcus Robinson move up in the rotation behind Jauan Jennings in Pearsall's absence. That will continue as needed.
