NFL | Sam Roush carving out role Sat Jan 31, 11:37 AM
Stanford TE Sam Roush is the 'best pure drive blocker' at the position in the 2026 NFL Draft, according to Lance Zierlein of NFL.com.
Footballguys view: Roush is a traditional "Y" tight end who can be counted on as a blocker and as a receiver. He's a mid-round pick with high football intelligence and the ability to contribute right away because of his blocking ability. While Roush is a good route-runner, he may get typecast into being primarily a blocker at the pro level. If that happens, it would clearly limit his fantasy value.
Houston TE Tanner Koziol was 'the stud tight end' for the National Team during Senior Bowl practices, according to Justin Melo of The Draft Network.
Footballguys view: Koziol certainly is a stud who can use his size and receiving ability to be a threat all over the field - and especially in the red zone. At 6-feet, 7-inches Koziol dominates 'above the rim' on the football field. He set a school record with 94 catches in 2024 at Ball State. Then, in 2025 with Houston, he led the team in catches (74) proving himself against tougher competition. With a standout performance at the Senior Bowl, Koziol could rise up draft boards. We believe he'll be a mid-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft.
Louisville WR Caullin Lacy was an 'electric route runner' during Senior Bowl practices, according to Alan Saunders of Steelers Now.
Footballguys view: Lacy knows how to cut a rug and get open against off coverage. His size and skill set projects him as a slot receiver at the pro level. Lacy's run-after-the-catch ability means he can take short passes and turn them into long gains. He also can contribute as a dangerous return man in the NFL. Lacy will need to learn the full route tree and prove himself against press coverage to play up to his full potential. He's seen as a Day 3 pick with upside.
Cincinnati WR Cyrus Allen 'wreaked havoc' on the defensive backs during Senior Bowl practices and made several contested catches, according to Alan Saunders of Steelers Now.
Footballguys view: Scouts know that Allen can 'churn and burn' on the football field. He's got blazing speed and is a big-play threat anytime he runs a route. Allen has a nose for the end zone as evidenced by his Big-12 leading 13 receiving touchdowns in 2025. He's got to become a more natural hands-catcher (too many body catches on film for our liking) and clean up his concentration drops. Allen is projected a Day 3 pick with upside.
LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier's consistency stood out during Senior Bowl practices, according to Alan Saunders of Steelers Now.
Footballguys view: It's a great week of work at the Senior Bowl for a quarterback who was once thought of as a first-round lock. Now, after an injury-plagued and inconsistent 2025 season we should see Nussmeier as a mid-round pick. Nussmeier is known as a smart quarterback who tends to go a bit too much into 'gunslinger' mode when under duress. With his performance at the Senior Bowl, Nussmeier might move into the late second or early third round.
Baylor QB Sawyer Robertson 'stood out for his inconsistency' during Senior Bowl practices, according to Alan Saunders of Steelers Now, and Saunders estimates that 20% of Robertson's attempts resulted in 'uncatchable passes.'

Denver Broncos defensive passing game coordinator and assistant head coach Jim Leonhard is expected to be hired by the Buffalo Bills as their new defensive coordinator, according to multiple sources.
Footballguys view: Leonhard is a fast-riser in coaching circles. He's only coached in the NFL for two seasons with the Broncos, but the former 10-year NFL safety is seen as a bright mind and future head coach. The Broncos' defense, ran by Vance Joseph, taught Leonhard a lot, and now he'll take those lessons to Buffalo. New Bills HC Joe Brady will run the offense, and now Leonhard is entrusted with a defense that needs improvement.

Minnesota Vikings executive vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski will lead all of the team's operations through the 2026 NFL Draft, as a result of former general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah having been relieved of his duties. Link to storyLas Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham was officially hired by the Pittsburgh Steelers Friday, Jan. 30, as their new defensive coordinator.
Link to storyAdam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Baltimore Ravens are going to hire Chicago offensive coordinator Declan Doyle as their offensive coordinator.
Footballguys view: The Bears did not have to allow Baltimore to interview Doyle since the job would technically be a lateral move, but Doyle will get to call plays in Baltimore, which was not on his plate in Chicago under Ben Johnson. Doyle was a Sean Payton protege in New Orleans and Denver, most recently as a tight end coach, before joining Johnson's staff as the offensive coordinator last year. It's hard to predict exactly how the Ravens offense under Doyle will differ from what we saw under new Cleveland head coach Todd Monken, but it could also include more play action passing and different foundational running game concepts after Ravens run game coordinator Travis Switzer left to join Monken in Cleveland. This will be Doyle's first playcalling gig, but he has gotten to learn under Payton and Johnson, so he has some good role models. Doyle was a big part of Caleb Williams progress in Chicago, and we should assume that played a big role in Baltimore hiring him to work with Lamar Jackson.
New Orleans Saints assistant offensive line coach Jahri Evans is being hired by the Pittsburgh Steelers as their assistant offensive line coach, according to a source.
Link to storyTom Pelissero of NFL.com reports that the league has informed the teams that the 2026 salary cap will be between $301.2 and $305.7 million, up from $279.2 million in 2025.
Footballguys view: While this isn't quite as big of a jump as the 2024 and 2025 increases in terms of percentage, it is still significant. The ever-rising cap is rewarding teams like Philadelphia that have used void years to spread cap hits out well into the future because one dollar of today's salary cap is more valuable than one dollar of cap room in the future. Free agent salaries at the top of the market should continue to set records, although this development will also make it easier for teams to keep top talent in house instead of letting them walk.
Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza said he will be attending the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine but did not say if he will participate in any drills.

Link to storyNew England Patriots QB Drake Maye (illness, shoulder) did not participate in practice Friday, Jan. 30, but head coach Mike Vrabel said Maye would have been on the field if he did not have the illness.
Link to storyArizona Cardinals special teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers is being hired by the Buffalo Bills as their special teams coordinator, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Rodgers has been the special teams coordinator for the Cardinals since 2018, and he has also had the title of assistant head coach in Arizona since 2020 under two different head coaches. Rodgers also served in that capacity for the Panthers, Broncos, and Bears before that. Chris Tabor previously held the position for the Bills, but left to join new Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley's staff after Sean McDermott was fired. New Bills head coach Joe Brady is wasting no time putting together an experienced coaching staff.
Washington Commanders passing game coordinator Brian Johnson interviewed with the Denver Broncos for their offensive coordinator vacancy on Friday, Jan. 30.
Footballguys view: This is a bit perplexing as recent developments seemed to pave the way for quarterback coach Davis Webb to be promoted to offensive coordinator after he was in consideration for the Bills head coach job among other spots. Johnson has been the pass game coordinator for the Commanders, but was passed over for the offensive coordinator job after the team chose assistant quarterback coach David Blough over him to replace Kliff Kingsbury. Johnson hasn't officially left the Commanders staff, but this is a sign that he will whether or not he gets the job with Denver.

Carolina Panthers WR Jalen Coker will enter training camp as the team's WR2 on the depth chart, according to head coach Dave Canales.
Footballguys view: Coker finished the season with a massive 9-134-1 line in the last second loss to the Rams. He should benefit from Tetairoa McMillan often drawing the best outside corner from the opposing defense. Coker has won on downfield routes consistently and should have the trust of Bryce Young as a big play target. His value is trending up considerably in dynasty leagues.
Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was fired Friday, Jan. 30.
Footballguys view: This wasn't a shock, as Adofo-Mensah's drafts have been full of busts and among the least productive in the league, and his in draft trades have been dubious, but the timing was. EVP of Football Operations Rob Brzezinski will run the team's draft, but head coach Kevin O'Connell will be heavily involved in picking the new general manager and making decisions about how the team will use their draft picks. Adofo-Mensah was a bit of surprise when he was hired back in 2022, after working in analytics for the 49ers for his entire football career except for one year under Andrew Berry in Cleveland learning football operations.
Baltimore Ravens run game coordinator Travis Switzer was hired by the Cleveland Browns as offensive coordinator Friday, Jan. 30.
Footballguys view: Switzer isn't a well-known name, but he has worked under new Cleveland head coach Todd Monken for the last three years and has spent his entire coaching career in Baltimore. The Ravens had him work with wide receivers for two years and tight ends for two years before making him the run game coordinator, so he has more experience with the passing game than his resume suggests. There's word today also that the Ravens hired Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle to perform the same job for them, with the additional duty of playcalling that he did not have under Ben Johnson in Chicago.
Denver Broncos senior offensive assistant Pete Carmichael was named offensive coordinator by the Buffalo Bills Friday, Jan. 30.
Footballguys view: Carmichael is a long time Sean Payton assistant, serving on his staff for the last 20 years, save for the year Payton took off in between leaving the Saints and taking over the Broncos. New Bills head coach Joe Brady's first NFL coaching job came as an offensive assistant under Carmichael in New Orleans during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, so there's some familiarity between the two. Carmichael won't call plays, and didn't under Payton either. The Bills should add more snaps under center to set up play action passes with Carmichael's help. The Broncos have let go or lost two of their senior offensive coaches, which signals that quarterback coach Davis Webb is on track to be their next offensive coordinator.
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard was hired by the Philadelphia Eagles as pass-game coordinator Friday, Jan. 30.

Link to storyChicago Bears assistant general manager Ian Cunningham has been hired as the general manager of the Atlanta Falcons, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Cunningham has been up for a GM job for at least the last few years. He's climbed the ladder through the scouting community, starting with the Ravens back in 2008. A former offensive lineman, Cunningham is known as a hard worker, and he's got an eye for talent (see what he's done with the Eagles and the Bears). The Falcons have work to do, but Cunningham could get them the players to get them on track in a year or two.

Link to storyLas Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham has agreed to a deal to become the defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to a league source.
Footballguys view: Graham had been with the Raiders since 2022 and through three different head coaches (Josh McDaniels, Antonio Pierce, Pete Carroll). New Steelers HC Mike McCarthy hired Graham to be the Packers' linebacker coach back in 2018, so the two have a previous working relationship. The Steelers are known for their defense, and Graham is tasked with helping bring them back to being championship contenders.
